The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Made my 11 miles yesterday. After listening to the Mickey Miles podcast and hearing Jeff Galloway suggest that if you're unhappy with your time/pace, to reduce your run/walk intervals, I tried it and came in 1:13 FASTER/mile than my 9.5 mile run two weeks prior.

I still feel like I'm super slow and part of me feels bad for walking what amounts to 1/3 of the course.

But, in the end, I suppose it matters that I cross the finish line (or in this case, my driveway) strong and feel like I can manage the parks after. Yesterday was a little rough on my feet but after a mediocre night's sleep and staying in my shoes all day, I feel good.

Glad I accomplished it. At mile 10.5, I got a little misty-eyed knowing that I was gonna make it!

That's wonderful! I probably need to reduce my run intervals. I'm at 2/1 right now I was SO exhausted after Saturday's 7.5.

I have a half the last Saturday in Sept prior to Wine and Dine,so that's why I am up to 7. :)
You seem to be on target for W&D!

Yes! But I feel far behind though. DH and I ran 7.5 but I'm running a half on Sept 14th so I should be in the double digits soon.

Hi everyone! I can't remember whether I introduced myself. I'm excited to be running my next runDisney race with my DH. We started training back at the end of June since I have the Diva DC half in Sept. we are staying at SSR and my mom, sister and DD will come to cheer us on.

Hey everyone! Have a training question for the more experienced runners... I'm doing the Wine & Dine half as my first race. Unfortunately, 2 weeks into training (last week), I fractured/twisted my ankle enough to keep me from running for a week or so. My last "long run" was the 3 mile at 16 sec run/44 sec walk. Here's my question....

Anyone see an issue with picking back up this weekend with the 5 mile run and just slowing my pace to maybe 10/50? Thanks for any advice you have to offer!

I'd give 4 miles a try instead. If you feel great, push it another mile. If you are beat then, as andrea9873 said, you have plenty of time to make up the distance.

I need some advice from fellow DISers who travel to WDW....
Scenario: We (DBF & !) are flying down on a Friday morning and home on Sunday afternoon for the Wine & Dine ½ Marathon and Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5K. We are not planning any other park time than what is included with our race entries (the after party). We are renting a car to eat off site and to shop at the outlets.
Question:
Should we pay the premium and stay on-site, because its a Disney trip and it should be Disney across the board?
Should we save a little money and stay off-site, since we won't be using Magical Express, Extra Magic Hours, have no need for a dining plan, etc.?
Rent DVC points?
Other opinions?

If I could spend the money to stay on site and it won't kill the budget, I would choose it EVERY SINGLE TIME! My opinion is if you are not doing parks, then its a great time to stay on property because you can enjoy the resorts and all they have to offer, which sometimes you just don't get to do when you are park touring. Either way... you're at Disney and it will be great!

Hi all! Hope everyone had a great weekend! Saturday I ran two 5ks... The first one at 7am, the second at 7pm. The second one was a fundraiser and more of a fun run, the first was chip timed and I ran it in 37:40. Not spectacular ( my PR before baby two years ago was 33), but I was happy with it. I'm still having problems figuring out a good run/walk interval. I did 4/1:30, but I felt so good that I ran through my first two walk intervals, then I lost some steam... Had I done things the right way and stuck with my intervals I would have finished sooo much stronger. I need to stop fighting the intervals!! :). Anyway, I did 6.5 total miles Saturday ( the second 5k was 3.4 miles, lol--- ) and it felt great... Looking forward to my 30 mini run tomorrow night. This is the last week of my ' comfort zone' in my half training... Next week is 7 mile run week and I've only run 2 10 k distances before-- 7 miles will be a PR... Scary!!!

Love all the updates!! Happy Monday to everyone :woohoo:

I had every excuse not to run today, but I ended up working it out and got in my planned 2.5 miles. I overslept and didn't have time to run before work, then went to change for a run at lunch to find out that I left my running shoes at home. So after picking up the kids from daycare, I took them in the double stroller (not a jogging stroller) and did a slow 2.5 miles. My almost 4 year old doesn't understand the run/walk intervals, so she kept asking why we were walking and why we were going so slow. LOL, not very motivating! :rotfl:

:lmao:Too funny! My run on SUnday night I took my 2 kids each going on one loop around my neighborhood, they go on their 4 wheeler. My son (he is 5) kept hearing my whistle and kept asking what that was. I told him it tells me when to run and when to walk. I got a pretty strange look. :rotfl2:

You win Monday's tenacity award! I would have rationalized the two failed attempts to run as the running gods against me and gone out for ice cream ;). Very impressed that you took the kids. In a double stroller. That wasn't even a jogger! Go you :yay:! I don't even like to run with my Bob as my kids used to provide the same "motivation" as yours, asking why we weren't running faster ;). Anyway, congrats!

I did 3.5 miles this morning. Training called for 3 but I got a later start than I wanted and then had to run all the way back to the house vs. enjoying a nice half mile cool down walk. Anyway, I felt slow. I'm excited to get back to physical therapy this week to keep my back functioning :)

What's the whistle? Is it part of a Galloway app? I always wondered how you'd do the run/walk intervals. That's pretty cool. When I was getting back into running I used an app called Get Running and this British woman would keep interrupting my music to tell me what to do.

Thanks :) Truth be told, it was more to stick it to my husband. He had a tough time pushing them during our run a couple weekends ago and I wanted to prove to him that it wasn't that hard.

I use an app that is called "The Interval Timer". There are two settings..."Exercise" and "Rest". You simply set each one for whatever you want (I do 4:00 exercise and 2:00 rest) and then set how many times you want it to repeat. It will show you the total time it will take to complete all of the sets. It tones and vibrates when you start the exercise and then dings and vibrates when it is time to rest. It will lower the volume of your music when it tones/rings so you won't have a problem missing a signal. It's very simple (and free) and since I run with my music, Nike+ and the interval timer running, I don't want something too complex that is going to further drain my battery.

The app I use on my phone it the HITT Interval Training. It was a free download on my phone. :thumbsup2 Love it! Can't run without it. It has a countdown in the few seconds before a change and I can either have a whistle or something else (forgot since I only use the whistle). No British women though :rotfl2:

I had to laugh at your comment also about ice cream. I wanted to go so bad for ice cream on Sunday night. DQ has a smores blizzard that is amazing. Didn't get to go on Saturday because my son did not finish his dinner. :rolleyes1 So figured we would go on Sunday, but forgot about my run. At least I was happy I got it in and lost calories instead of adding them :lmao:

Fruitcakes24 - that is funny about pushing the stroller and your husband. You go girl!:woohoo:

I am with you on the draining of the battery. I run with the same three things you do. My battery lasted long enough for me to finish my 1/2 marathon, but thinking about getting a watch for the marathon in January. Don't want my phone dying at mile 17 :scared1:

i use the pro version of the endomondo app, it probably has the best GPS tracking of any app i used it was pretty much dead on with the road markings along where i run. it also has an interval function of course this one says "high interval" low interval"

Hope your ankle feels better.

jpeka65844 mentioned the Mickey Miles podcast, so I downloaded some episodes. There was an episode that Jeff Galloway answered running questions (mid-July) and he specifically addressed injuries. One strategy he suggested after your doctor releases you medically, is to do the shorter run/walk intervals- that sounds like what you are planning. One thing that I heard Jeff say several times is that the walking provides a certain amount of conditioning that is comparable to running the same distance. I'd always wondered about this, but I don't have a source other than that podcast. Has anyone else heard this?
