The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I got up at 4am and did 4.5 miles at a 12:47 pace using 4/2 intervals. I wasn't really winded, but it still felt hard. I think it was due to an empty stomach and the fact that it was 4:30 in the morning. I have to work today and it feels so good to get the run out of the way. Now, I can look forward to going home after work and just chilling out:)

Honestly, I think all WDW races are flat. Sure there are a couple of inclines/overpasses, but if you run any hills at all you will be fine. And if you don't, they are so short, just walk up and then start running again at the top. :goodvibes

Agreed. ::yes:: The only "hill" I even have to train on down here is either a bridge over the FL Turnpike or bridges over the Intracoastal in Fort Lauderdale. :boat: So even though my hill training is severely lacking, I found absolutely no issues with tackling the few inclines of the W&D. :woohoo: I had more trouble with some of the steep banking of the roads than I did with any of the overpasses or elevation changes at WDW.

The banked roads were the WORST! I have no idea how I'm going to get thru them this year. Last year I ended up w a very painful right foot injury after it. Hopefully it was from something else that I didn't realize bc I have no idea how to avoid the banked roads going into animal kingdom and down the exit ramp before DHS! Maybe walk backwards??? But I'm sure I'd cause a huge pile up accident!

:rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2: It's okay, I'd be right there with you! :dance3: I think I may just try and stay on either the top or botton edge of the road, even if it adds a few more steps. Thankfully, there aren't too many of them, but boy, can they be a major P-I-T-A! :scared: Especially the DHS one! :scared1:

I'm not really good about varying my pace. I pretty much feel like I have one running speed and one walking speed so my pace seems to be set more by my walk breaks than my pace.

So how much faster do you run your shorter runs then the long run? How much slower than your half marathon pace do you run your long runs? Do you really find that you can run the race faster than the miles you practice during the long runs?

I find myself averaging about 15-30 seconds slower per mile on my long runs. But, I hope to improve as I get used to adding miles in the next few weeks.

I found a map of Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5K today. It says the elevation change is 52 feet and it looks like all the elevation climb is in the first mile or so.

I don't think that is accurate. The first mile is in the parking lot for AK 5Ks.

On my map my run app is said the elevation began at 104 and had a max at 190 ft. On the graph it is easy to see the overpasses! But I thought the hill up to the entrance of HS where the army man yelled "take the hill soldiers" was short but a bit rough.

That hill is a killer. Steep as all get out for WDW races, but it is short and quick to get over. If it seems to be a bit daunting, move to the side and slow your pace. Better to walk or jog slower to the top than to injure yourself with a third of the race to go.

I would suggest taking the outside of the curve. Mathematically, it is a slightly longer distance (the inside circle of a donut is smaller than the outside circle--yes I love food and if shows); however, the outside of the curve will be flatter.

I stay to the top (outside) for all the banks. They are hard on my itbands and I agree I find them more troublesome than the inclines. Even if it takes a little longer to stay to the top or if I have to slow down, I find my body is much happier. :)

Thanks for the tips! Meet ya at the top around the 1 hour mark. Yeah, RIGHT! :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

Tuesday running check in? Second training run this morning. I thought I was really moving fast on the first half mile but, alas, RunKeeper said otherwise :). But, it's done and now I don't feel as bad about baking brownies with DD later ;). My training plan has me running 3 miles Thursday and then doing a 5-miler on Saturday. Since my longest distance since coming back from our extended vacation has been 3.75 miles, I'm already dreading going for 5.

Sorry if you've already mentioned this but what plan are you following?

No running for me today (yet). It is so nice out, but I ran 4.5 yesterday and my toe still hurts. The second toenail on both feet grows UP, towards the top of my shoe. It doesn't get jammed up in the END of my shoe, it gets crammed up against the TOP of the shoe:headache:. I have no idea how to prevent this:confused3. It's only my second toes (which are not longer than my big toes) which is odd. All of the other toenails grow out...the second toes grow UP. A while back, I'd gone 7 miles and my toes hurt so bad afterwards. The toenails turned black and blue the next day and took about 6 weeks to finally fall off. Now, the second toes on both feet are all black and blue (and really thick:crazy2:??) so I am taking today off and hoping to try and run tomorrow morning before work. I've heard (from the salon that does my pedicures and the folks at the running store) that this is not an uncommon problem, but nobody had any suggestions for me. How about you guys...anyone have this problem? What do you do?

I went for a 3 mile walk last night. I was testing out a new app and was trying to set a max pace of 16 min/mile. Instead I set it at 16sec/mile. So every 5 mintues it wouuld update me with my average pace and let me know I was 15 minutes and 40seconds slower than my target. LOL. I don't think I can go 224mph to keep a 16sec/mile pace up.

Tonight according to the schedule is a 30 minute run. I'm sure I will go 45 min minimum. We'll see. I may only do 3 miles tonight and that would be closer to 30 minutes if I do 3 miles my goal is to do it in 10:30min/mile.

You mean the finish @ 1:25:03?:duck::duck::duck:

DP is doing this with me and I am certain we will be closer to 2:45....

Sorry, just having a dreamy runDisney moment there...:cloud9: :lmao: :lmao:

Trust me, I'll be right there with you guys in the 2 hour+ group. :dance3:

Just put the tunes up loud, walk when you need to, take a route with alot of turns (seems to work for me :hyper:), and before you know, those 5 will be over.

It took a very patient CM (Lisa), a supervisor and almost 45 minutes, but I was able to get 4-day park hoppers for DH and I using my 9 $50 gift cards from Target and a little leftover from our 2012 trip:lmao:. The cost was $453.70 for both tickets and they are mailing them to my house at no charge:thumbsup2. She asked if I wanted them mailed or if I wanted them at the Will Call window. I initially told her that I would just pick them up because I don't really want to pay for postage when there is not a huge benefit to getting them ahead of time, and I will still need to go to guest services to get our TIW card. She told me that just recently, they started offering to mail the tickets at no additional charge so I took her up on the offer. Now, that is one less thing I will have to worry about.

By next week, I will be doing the double-digit dance! I really need to get kicking on some longer distances. I've only gone more than 5.5 miles 3 times! I've done 6, 7 and 8 and only the 8 miles was within the past 6 weeks. The 6 and 7 miles were last summer. I can't wait until school starts because I will have several hours in the morning that will allow me to go out and run with no time limits. Right now, I have the choice of getting up at 3:30am (if I want to run 6-7 miles) or trying to do it after work. Since I never know if I will be out at 7pm (could be 8pm or later!), and I don't know what the weather will be like, I tend to get up and go in the morning, but 3:30am is way too early. Getting up at 4, I can usually get out on the road by 4:30 which only gives me 1 hour to run. If I can get in 5 miles, I am really cruising. I didn't run tonight so I am going to try and get up at 4 tomorrow and run the same route I ran yesterday. I did the 4/2 intervals and paced at 12:47 which is slower than I would like. I want to stay right around 12:00 for my runs that are 5 miles or less. My overall goal is to complete the 1/2 marathon at a 13:30 pace or better. So far, all of my distances have been kept under 13 minutes so I am still OK. It will be interesting to see what I can do when I finally get the chance to go out and do 10 milespopcorn::.

Thanks for the encouragement! Will be adding some fun new music to the running mix just to amp me up on Saturday.

Wow! congrats on heading into double digit runs! Do you have a 10-miler on your schedule next week? You are way ahead of me in training, if so. You are sure to hit your pace time for the 1/2 marathon at that rate and maybe you'll even blow that original goal away since you are already training well under your pace time.

Oh my goodness, that is so funny that the app had you going 15minutes and 40seconds off of your pace time. Good luck on your 3-miler tonight. I'm right there with you around that pace. May I ask, what is your goal time in the half? I am definitely looking to be under 2:30 but maybe 2:15...

Sorry if you've already mentioned this but what plan are you following?

I'm using Hal Higdon's novice 2 plan, primarily, but I am also incorporating the RunKeeper sub 2:15 half marathon plan some weeks in order to figure out what pace to keep on my longer runs. I was going to use the 2:30 plan but it had me going a bit too slow on my long runs.

So I did my 30 minute maintenance run tonight. I decided to focus on something other than distance, intervals, speed, fueling, etc..... Instead on something very important - the After party! So after a particular hot and tiring run ......I had a beer. I think it went well. I'll need to experiment some more to make sure I'm fully prepared to finish the party in an upright position! next time maybe a post run wine or a margarita? Then gradually I'll try to add snacks ( from 28 countries ).
Stay hydrated my friends!

:rotfl2: Just the post I needed to get through the rest of my evening. So glad you were able to focus on an often-neglected part of our training. I'm totally going to eat crepes after my run on Saturday. Thanks for the inspiration.

You should also stop along your run to take photos with random people (characters), just to see how it affects your finish time!

I've done the ToT 10-miler and the EE 5k and was so looking forward to the after parties but didn't participate in either. I took a change of clothes to ToT which was a joke b/c I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to lift my legs high enough to change my pants. I REALLY REALLY want to enjoy the W&D 1/2 after party.

I love the idea of taking photos with random people!!! I think we need to call Galloway and have him incorporate party training, potty stops and photo ops! I hope you make the after party walkdmc- if you do, you can buy me my first beer :)
