The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I use my Garmin Forerunner 10 too...AND the Nike+ app. I will start the Nike app right away and do my 1/4 mile walk. Then I keep it running and start my Garmin when I start my "run". That way, I know my overall distance and pace but I also know how well I do when I start my intervals.

Sent from my iPhone using DISBoards

This is a great idea :) I usually use the "walk" feature on the nike app on my nano for my warmup walk and leave it running when I start the Run portion... it stops calculating until I'm done. I always want to know what my "Overall" time is, but can't have it both ways LOL.

Looks like my kids and I are going to sign-up for the Jingle Jungle 5K. We have ZERO previous experience but I can already do a brisk walk 5K at a 17:40 mile pace. That is at altitude (Colorado Springs is over 1 mile high) and with rolling hills, and no training, so I figure at sea level, flat, and training, a 16:00 mile should be a breeze. It should serve as a great weight loss and exercise motivation. Looking at a previous course map it looks like at one point the course takes a hard right and go straight back thru the safari (and return). Is that correct?

Finished the Biggest Loser 10k this morning in DC. OMG was it hot. Didn't help that there was zero shade. I ended up at 1:14. Not as quick as I was hoping but considering the heat (90) I'm satisfied. The course itself was disappointing. It was all in the parking lot of RFK stadium just zig zagging around. Pretty boring. Also it crisscross end in several areas which pretty chaotic. It was the inaugural year so hoping if they do it again they improve the course and start earlier. It didn't start until 9am which didn't help with the heat. I got to see several past people from the show which was pretty cool. Go Biingo!

I dragged myself out of bed at 4:45 and hit the road at 5:10. I made it out the door 10 minutes faster than yesterday...win #1 for the day:cool1:. I did 2.02 miles in 23:06 which is an 11:26 pace with no intervals:goodvibes. That pace includes the first 1/4 mile that I walked so I am happy with it. I just wish I could get myself up earlier so that I could actually run a decent distance. This 25-minute, 2 mile stuff doesn't feel like it is doing anything to prepare me for 3 hours/13 miles. At best, it is serving as a "placeholder" between the times when I can actually get out and go 5-6 miles.

It is so hard to find the time when I have energy and the energy when I have the time:confused3. I work 12-hour day shifts and DH works 12-hour day shifts as well. We are mostly opposite days with only one day a week that we are both off. The kids are terrified of staying home alone while one of us goes out and runs (the kids are 10 and 7) so I can either do a long run on the ONE day a week that we are off (and I have to coordinate it with him because HE is training for the race too), or I have to wait until he gets home at 6pm. There's no way I will run before he goes to work...he leaves at 5am:lmao:! He prefers to run "at night". He will usually wait until I get home which isn't until 8pm most nights. Unfortunately, he is still recovering from his nasty bike accident and has only built back up to 3 miles:worried:. He's getting back into running very slowly. He injured his shoulder, but he also had some pectoral muscle involvement which is affecting his breathing when he runs. He's working on it, though, and making decent progress.

I'm off to work 12 now...have a great day everyone and get out there and pound some pavement:wave2:.

That's an awesome post... what I noticed about your attitude is that you aren't complaining at all: you are looking at all of the obstacles in your way and you are FINDING ways to do what you need to do in spite of the obstacles! Thank you for sharing-it's inspirational to me (kids 8 and 10, both of us working all the time, etc.):yay::thumbsup2

Does anyone use an iPod nano with Nike + for training? I currently use my iPhone with the Nike + running app and was wondering how the two compare. I'm guessing the biggest difference is GPS with the phone and not with the nano. I'm just worried that once I start doing longer runs my phone battery will drain too quickly. I'd love to hear first hand reviews of anyone who uses the nano and nike + combination.

Hi there! I have an iPod Nano and an iPhone. Personally, I like the nano better but that might be just because it's what I started with and got used to first. I honestly don't care about the whole GPS thing... I know where I am LOL, and don't need Nike to be posting my whereabouts. I have my own method of keeping track of which runs take place in which places.

What I like about the nano: it's small. It clips on my t-shirt and is easy to get at. It's not stuck in a stupid armband on my side LOL. The other thing I like is that it has both "walk" and "run" features, which the Nike app on my phone does not seem to be capable of. Now if I could just get the Nike man's voice to be a bit more interesting LOL! :)

What the phone app does that the nano doesn't: as I said, it does the GPS thing and maps out where you ran. It also gives you an elevation report so that you can compare that to your pace.

There may be other things here that I missed, but that's my two cents! Have fun :)

Oh gosh that must have been awful!!! With the heat and too bad the course was not more interesting. Wasn't it kewl to see past contestants? :goodvibes I felt like a little kid when I saw Jackie, Dan and Tara. Didn't talk to them, but I was way excited to get their pictures.

Well I did a 4.25 this weekend, but it took over an hour. I did it with my friend who does not run. Most of it was walking, some slow running in the beginning. But we were lapping everyone on the couch, so I am glad I got the miles in and glad I got to spend the time with her alone also. We each have two kids and trying to get in a word edgewise with 2 7 year olds and 2 5 year olds is almost impossible. :lmao:

GREAT JOB to everyone who got out and got their runs in this weekend! :thumbsup2

My faves from the past contestants were Sione and Felippe (no idea if I'm spelling their names right). They even did their Polynesian dance! Lol! Dan looked amazing! I didn't even recognize him at first.

This will be my 2nd Wine & Dine - so I got started with the Galloway training program on Tuesday. Skipped Thursday and went for it on Saturday. I ran the entire three miles! It's been a big barrier for me and I was completely thrilled!

Kept to approx 12min/mile pace and really pushed it for the last 1/4. Finished in 38 minutes. Slower than my fastest 5k, but a big hurdle to overcome.

Way to stick with training through the heat, everyone! :yay:

I took the weekend off because I had sort of a mini-running crisis. After a somewhat disastrous half marathon in May I signed up for a late September marathon on a whim (I think I felt like I needed to "redeem myself") and haven't been excited about it at all. It's been really hard to get myself motivated to train and the long runs have been miserable, so on Saturday it dawned on me that no one is making me do this race, and training for it is starting to make me really not enjoy running...so for that reason and a few others I'm dropping down to the half. I feel relieved and sort of like a quitter at the same time. :guilty: Mostly relieved though. I think the lesson for me is that I just need to stick to full marathons at Disney. :thumbsup2 So after making that decision I started the process to switch my registration and took the weekend off...and I'll be running this half about 6 weeks before Wine & Dine.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Question for those of you using your Nanos - did you do something to calibrate them? I only ask because the one time I used my Nano on a run I also wore my Garmin to compare and my Nano was WAY off. It added 0.15 miles to every mile I ran! So when my Garmin said Mile 1 the Nano said 1.15, Mile 2 was 2.30, etc. It might just be mine being buggy. Speaking of the Garmin (I have a FR 210)...I had a panicky moment on Saturday when I went to plug it in to charge and the screen went blank. And I couldn't get it to turn on! Eventually I found a solution on the Garmin.com forums and it seems to be okay now. What a relief!

You are not allowed to feel like a quitter! You are still running 13.1 miles! I do understand feeling let down with yourself for not following through with a full marathon, but I can't imagine trying to complete your training when you are facing a mental block like that and no longer enjoying yourself. How crummy it would be to slog through months more of training without having any fun. You did the right thing. You are still going to conquer a long distance run. And this frees you up to have some fun with training again and maybe set some sort of time goal.

I have training runs on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week. Hoping to do three miles for each or 3/3.5/3 keeping up ten minute miles or a little less. Then 4 miles on Saturday, which I don't feel up for already :p. I guess I'm calling this week one of Higdon training.

Yours don't let you talk either? I thought it would get better when mine got to that age and they wouldn't want to talk to me anymore ;). Oh well! Good job getting your workout in.

Amazing!!! Good for you on getting passed that barrier. What an excellent feeling that must have given you. Hope it carries you through training this week.

Yuck! This race sounds like a nightmare. How boring and miserable. Makes your accomplishment in finishing even more impressive. I absolutely can't do more than a 5k without a fun course. I have very little interest in doing a half outside of Disney because of that.

Thank you so much for this! I know it's the right decision but I've been a little down on myself this morning.

That's true what you said about trying to set a time goal...I had a time goal for my half in May and that race was about the worst I've ever run, so maybe I need to start looking at this upcoming half as my redemption race rather than the one that was supposed to be a full marathon. :thumbsup2

I use Higdon plans for the most part and really like them. :thumbsup2 Good luck with it!!

Random musing...I wonder when the official course maps will be posted? I found last year's program and the course descriptions sound the same, which makes me wonder why the maps aren't there yet. I think they were up by this time last year. :scratchin :hyper:

ETA: Of course now that I look again on runDisney.com none of the race weekends have course maps posted...hmm.

Another week of training is in the books. I am officially training for the WDW Marathon but I'll also be running the Dumbo Double Dare solo and the Wine & Dine with my wife. This will be her first Half Marathon and she is really getting excited. We braved the heat and got in 10 miles yesterday. It was a tough one but she made it to the end. I’m really happy for her!

Hope everyone else is enjoying their training runs!

Ariel, I totally second what capeseal said. You are not allowed to feel like a quitter. I signed up to do the marathon in January because of you. I have reread your marathon post once already since signing up on Thursday. You are not a quitter!!! If you are not going to enjoy the training for the race, there is no sense in doing it. This is supposed to be fun. As soon as it is not fun anymore, chance what you are doing so it is fun again. Which is what you did by changing to the half. You are still running a half marathon! Have fun in your training and the race will be even better! You have got this! :thumbsup2

Much to the surprise of my doctor, the rapid strep test was negative. She was shocked because she said my throat looks terrible. She sent it out for a culture but started me on the antibiotic anyways.

I felt like crap yesterday between the sore throat, fever and headache so no running for me. I'm feeling better today, but of course I have to work all weekend plus Monday.

Hopefully, I will be back running again on Tuesday. Until then, I will just keep planning my Disney trips. I am getting really excited about going back to my AKV home after a three year absence.

Fel better chica! But don't overdo it and set yourself back. :goodvibes

I had a great 4 mile run last night. 36:55 minutes for 4 miles. Man was it hot out there though.

How bad is it to get a generic coral placement? How late will you start compared to the gun? I'm hoping to finish in 2-1/2 hours. I looked yesterday and I'd need a 10k time before 9-1-13 or I can bring it to the expo to have it changed? There is only 1 10k+ around Houston before 9-1-13. If I can do a race after that there are a few 10milers I might be interested in running in September or October but I'm not sure I would pay for the race if I can't use the time for coral placement or if it really doesn't make a huge difference for a runner planning on 2:30 half.

I had a nice long reply for you before my DIS blew up on me :crazy2:, but I'm pretty sure it will make a difference. I started in Corral G last year and had to wait a few miles before I could really start making my way through the crowd. The most congested part started on the way into AK, so if you can beat the crowds there, I think you're in better shape for the remainder, until you get to the walkway between DHS and Epcot. That little sidewalk along the water is a nightmare! :scared1:

So I had to share my running experience tonight - it was so bizarre! I'm out doing my Thursday night run ( I had to skip it last night ) when as I enter the woods I come across 6 or 7 skater dudes. I of course per judge them as hoodlums. As I get closer to them, the one with the bob marley shirt starts coming towards me and says something. Can't he see I have my headphones on - the universal sign for " don't talk to me " and why is he approaching me anyhow? I'm and old lady (45) and a slow runner. He says " working hard?" I said " yes?" He says " you running hard?" I said " not really, I'm very slow ". He said " come on!" And runs with me, at a much faster pace and for longer than my intervals ...I kept up, my pride wouldnt let me quit. He said " great job!" And turned to go back with his friends. I said, thanks for the encouragement and gave him a high five, that last part was probably lame but I really appreciated him running with me.
I had a really great run the rest of the way home with a great big smile :) Keep up the great work everyone especially you old and slow ladies.
Melinda

You never know where inspiration will come from! :cheer2:

Oh peachy.... I had this same conversation w myself. Except it was 8am when I had it.... No clue how u run in the pre-dawn hours!

Me either! :scared:

I just finished 9.5. Miles 6-7 were not pretty but after my fuel break, I finished strong. Can't believe I've come this far!!

I use Runkeeper on my iPhone. That way my time stats and music are all in one place.

Yippee!!! :dance3: pixiedust: :cool1:

I use the Garmin Forerunner 210 and MapMyRun app. I love that app! They also have a MapMyRide app for riding on cross-training days. Both are free (there are pay "MVP" versions) and they communicate with each other. The GPS on the app is more accurate than my watch but I keep my intervals and HR monitor on my watch.

Ran my first 5k EVER this morning! I told myself I was going to be happy with anything under 40 minutes...finished at 37:01 and felt strong so I was really happy. Happy Saturday everyone!!

You got this! :hyper:  :yay:

Somehow, I have ended up signed up to run the Princess half, as well. A friend and I were just sort of musing about it and, the next thing I knew, our husbands said to do it. It will be a girls' weekend with a couple of running friends and will be my first time away from the kids overnight. I am excited and nervous.

Sounds like it will be a blast! pixiedust:

I have an iPod Nano 4th gen. which I use with the Nike+ and I love it! It only freaked out on me once (a 6:53 mile??? HUH??!!??) Other than that, I don't remember having any serious issues with it. I calibrated it on a dog walk path across the street from my house which is supposedly 1.15 miles a lap. It seems to be pretty close as when I've taken it on my 13.1's, it alwasy seems to be within about 100 yards. And since I found they make little pouch thingies that you can tie to your shoelaces, I don't feel like the only shoes I have to get are Nikes. :p

Thanks Diana! I'm starting to feel better about it.

You're right that it's supposed to be fun...I think that's what makes it more bearable to train for the WDW Full. Somehow running a full in Ohio just doesn't seem like it'll be as much fun...:p

When I get down about my running, or life tries to get in the way of training I head up the tube and end up watching videos like this to remind me why I trudge on through those mental barriers to participate in this amazing human experience.

That video TOTALLY made my cry! :) beautiful, thanks for sharing! I can't wait to cross that finish line, First Half Marathon.
