~*~*~The Oct 2014 waiting patiently (or not so) for a discount thread ~*~*~

 Hi Everyone! Joining in to see if there are any discounts yet for Oct 11-19th. Sure would love FD to come out!!:goodvibes

Nothing yet. Fall deals usually release in late July/early August. That week is always excluded from FD, but you might be able to get a room discount. Good luck! :goodvibes

Hi,

A question about October. We selected the week of Oct 19th - 25th as it showed as a 'lower crowd' week (not the lowest but we didn't want to compromise on bad weather). We even avoided the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend as it shows a bit more crowded. We plan on taking our kids out of school for the week as they are young enough.

But now I'm hearing of some American school break? What is that? And when? We were hoping the bulk of kids would be off and it would just be other families like ourselves who take their kids out for the vacation.

We are planning on the same time as you, also taking our kids out of school... we do have a school break that week, the teachers have a convention... ours is a Christian school, so I am not sure if all schools are out at that time or not. I think if the crowd numbers say they are low for that week, I would imagine it isn't a big time to go to Disney, even with the break.

Many schools have Fall Breaks in October. There is a discussion about them here...

The breaks are spread out over the whole month, so there really isn't any way to plan around them. We are going the same week, and have gone that week for many years. The crowds have steadily increased every year, but the weather (although unpredictable), moderate crowds and MNSSHP more than make it worth the money. You'll be fine. :goodvibes

I believe the break you're referring to is Columbus Day, which is October 13 this year. It is an American federal holiday and some schools give that Monday off. I wouldn't know of another break in October.

From the week you picked seems like you'd be fine avoiding those crowds. I picked a later week in October too to avoid the holiday crowds.

Many schools get a full week off in October, and several get two weeks. It's called Fall Break. Some include Columbus Day, but many don't. It depends on when school starts for the year.

Thank you both. I was worried the crowd levels would be way up. We didn't select that week because of MNSSHP, but do plan on attending since it is going on and have heard great things (although it works out best for the Friday night for us, which I know is the worst night)

Wow. News to me. Is this a new thing? I've never heard of a "Fall Break." Lol lucky kids.

Edit: I found a thread in Theme Park Strategies Board with a compiled list of Fall Break dates. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3251080

I am guessing that these schools who have 1-2 weeks off at that time are year round schools. I have never heard of breaks like that in non-year round schools... but anything is possible! Either way, I think the crowds wouldn't be as bad as other times of the year... like spring break or Christmas.

Nope, not year round. We start Aug 21 and get out June 5.

Thanks. It's just ironic as we could have pushed our trip to Nov had we known. Are these new breaks that have been introduced this year? If they are existing, the 'Crowd Calendars' shows the week of Oct 19th as green...just two bars longer than the absolute best weeks (and where green can go up to 4 bars).

Interesting.... we don't have any breaks here that are more than 2 days outside of Christmas and Spring Break.... we start in September though, we don't have school before Labor Day.

We are not in a year round school and we have a fall break. It's not a new thing for our school system - our son is in high school and he's had a fall break since pre-school. We'll be there the same week as you :wave2: We've gone the past two years during that week - the first year it was blissfully quiet but last year was quite crowded. Most of the people we met last year were there on vacation from England and Australia - they said it was their break as well....HTH :)

We have enjoyed fall break since my kids have been in school and my oldest is now 21. We have enjoyed fall break in disney for years now.

I may be wrong but don't a bunch of Canadians visit during the first weeks of Oct? I think Oct. 13th is also Thanksgiving for them.

Yeah, Mon Oct 13th if Thanksgiving weekend in Canada. We shifted our holiday to the following week for that reason, but guess it doesn't make a difference, since other places are off...and for more than one day.

Hey October peeps, I have an opinion question if anyone will obliged my request.

We are planning on going 10/29 - 11/3, I am wondering if we should switch out and just go 11/1 - 11/8 and try to catch both the MNNSHP and MVMCP. My concerns are as follows: 11/1 is the start of "jersey" week, additionally F&W Marathon is that weekend. How many more people will this bring in and is it worth the crowds?

Thanks!

There is a solid chance that there will be no Nov. MNSSHP this year. Halloween falls on a Friday, and they will not do a party on Saturday, so it would have to be on Nov. 2nd. With MVMCP likely starting on Nov. 7, they may not have enough time to complete the transition. Couple that with the rumor that they are starting MNSHHP over Labor Day weekend, I feel like a Nov. date is likely not going to be an option. We should know when they release the Nov. hours in mid-April.

Well I did it!

I just booked our flights for October...
I was trying to hold off, but I kept watching and out direct MORNING flight is officially sold out. So I thought i better book the direct afternoon flight before that happens too, or the price sky rockets!

Official dates.. Oct 14-22!!

I guess I should actually book that "Disney" portion now.. LOL

We usually go labor day week to Disney and have for the last 6 years and have gotten free dining. I want to go when it is cooler and some of the holiday stuff going on plus with the extension of the Food and Wine festival (which we love) we have decided to go Oct 31 to Nov 9th. Taking our kids out for 4 days as they have Monday and Tuesday off for election day and a student holiday. I am SO hoping for free dining!!!!!!
