The "Newest" Moms Hangout...

We did Elliott's newborn pictures at Target (he was 6 days old).

General rule of thumb for babies for pictures is 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year, 18 months, 2 years, and once a year after that (I worked at Sears in the portrait studio for 12 years).

With little babies, please don't go in expecting too much! I had a lady one time that was very disappointed in the pictures I took of her little one, because the baby didn't smile....the baby was 2 WEEKS OLD!! As far as clothing, keep it simple. Something bright and patterned will totally overpower a little one. Also, know your baby's limits. We would often have people come in with 4 or 5 outfit changes for a baby. If your baby can handle it, then go for it. But, if you know they hate getting changed, don't do it! Also, outfit changes take time. The longer a session lasts, the crabbier a baby will tend to get.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I was wondering when would be the best time to switch from a wide nipple to a regular nipple on the bottles?

I never switched... Mine have used gerber nuk bottles from the get go. They wouldnt even take a regular little nipple when I tried.

I need some advice. When DS drinks from his bottle about half an ounce of it ends up running down his chin soaking his bib. Is this normal? (first baby) I was wondering if there is something I can do about it. I am using Medela slow vent nipples and making sure that it is venting properly into the bottle so it isn't going to fast or to slow. Should I try a different kind of nipple? If so what do you recommend. Planing on getting more bottles as we only have a few right now. He is currently drinking 3 oz per feeding.

Totally normal. Not much you can do except go slow and not force anything (which I know you're not doing).
We use Dr. Brown's since they cut down on the air that is ingested, which helps with gas, but babies are going to dribble a bit no matter what in the beginning. :thumbsup2

.... I also absolutely HATE the checkout lady at that office. If I didn't love the pedi so much, I'd switch just because of this lady. They didn't have Lucas' soy formula (all the samples sit on a table by the back door, with a sign that says "1 per family, please." so I grabbed Nutramigen for Maggie. I've gotten it before, right after Lucas was first born because the pedi said that'd be the next step if the soy didn't fix things. So I grabbed it as a "just in case" and no one said anything to me then so I figured it was no big deal.
Well today she had an issue with it. :confused3 She goes "Is that what he uses?" I said no, I grabbed it for a friend and she gave me a lecture about how if my friend wasn't a patient there I was breaking the rules and she'd "let it go this time".. but if it WERE Lucas' formula she'd of given all of it to me because she "had extra" :confused3:confused3:confused3
Uh, hello? I didn't break the rules! It says 1 per family! And these samples are given to you guys for FREE! And if you have extra WHY DO YOU CARE?
She then goes "That stuff is about $30 a can you know" ... HENCE WHY I AM GETTING SOME FOR MY FRIEND!:confused:

I just don't see the big deal.
And I hate that getting a lecture from a cranky old lady makes me feel like I am 5 years old again.
I've never liked her.. DH rarely goes with me and he dislikes her as much as I do. She gave me a ton of crap that my insurance card was wrong because it didn't list co-pays on it and said "Lab Card".. uh, aren't all insurance cards different? Sorry that mine offends you. :headache:

BOO for her!! I *might* have just said it was for me. . . I don't usually lie, but she's so annoying! UGH! SOrry you have to deal with that, thankfully your Ped and NP make up for it!

I've been quiet, not because my nights have gotten any better. They're still pretty darn awful. No, I just have been reluctant to type out the news.

Weather was gorgeous this past weekend. But the only time I got out was when DH & I took the dog to the vet, who gave us the worst possible news. Looks like cancer. Very aggressive cancer. Plus with his age "treatment" options are limited. Basically pain management. It looks like bone cancer, which is very painful. So we do pain meds, and keep him as comfortable as we can for as long as we can. Very soon we will have to say good bye. My poor dog.

He's an ex-racing greyhound. You can see a pic and his lineage here: http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?z=c9J__C&d=ensign+blue&sex=&color=&birthyear=&birthland=
:grouphug: So sorry!

. I read in American Baby that the average family spends $119/week on groceries. I don't even spend that a MONTH! Of course, I coupon too... but even if I didn't I don't think I would spend that much.
WOW - $119 a month would be AMAZING!!

DS is feeling much better.

Glad to hear you DS is doing better! :goodvibes

YAY!!!! Lucas has been making all the appropriate noises to string "dada dada" together (yeah I know it's just him making noises, not saying the actual word yet) for awhile now but late last night he finally did the noises to say "mama" !!

I'm a dork, but I'm excited by it. :) Not to wait until he actually knows what he is babbling about means something...
AWWWW!! We keep talking to Isabel and repeat "papa, papa" and "mama" trying to get her to say it! She's still little though. YEAY for Lucas (and you mama).
I was wondering when you think it would be ok to wear perfume around the baby. I have been staying away from perfumed soaps, fabric softeners, etc.
I started wearing my perfume again at around 4 months old, and still only wear it to go out. No one told me not to wear it, I just figured since I am BFing I didn't want to bother her and I wanted to smell like me for her :)

On the other hand, we still wash her clothes separately in Dreft. She broke out with infant acne at about one month old, and the Dr. said she may be sensitive so just keep using either Dreft, Ivory or the Free and Clear stuff. I have sensitive skin and my mom had to use Ivory for my stuff until I was well into my school aged years.

Hey, it gives me something to go off!
How strange that milk is the most expensive here (save Hawaii, but I think they win on EVERYTHING!) :rotfl:
I have some cottage cheese in the fridge I might try to give him in a few days. Want to wait to see how the cheese went down.
Nope - it is more expensive here. We are thrilled to only pay 3.59 a gallon at Publix :) Anything under $4 a gallon is good around here. It was actually cheaper for us when we lived in DC (well we got it at Costco in MD, but still).

When would you recommend that we get professional pictures taken of the baby? Thinking of trying out the one in the Babies R Us cause they should be able to do a good job as they photograph alot of babies.

Also do you have any tips for his first photo session.
Any positions that you loved your baby in?
Any thing you didn't think of before you had the pictures taken you can tell me about?

Thanks! :goodvibes

We got Isabel's first pics done at 2 weeks old (at Wal-Mart, never again) - since then We've been going to Sears (the women there are AMAZING!!). Anyhow, we've been doing monthly pictures because I joined the club they have back in December for $10, and I get a free 8x10 and no session fee - so I've been spending about $10 a month (getting the free 8x10 and the cheap package they always send me coupons for). I figure that at 6 months and a year old I'll do a bigger package like I did at Christmas time.

My babies still dribble.. Heck, I wish my 8yo would get all his food in his mouth!:lmao: Its totally normal, no need to worry about it!:thumbsup2

Yesterday Alex became a steam roller! :rotfl: He started rolling from back to belly. And then again and again and again! This morning he was on the floor as I was packing up for work and he ended up on the other side of the living room. We're in trouble! :teeth:

Isabel was only having 2 ounces at that age from bottles and is now up to 3.5 ounces. I follow the chart on kellymom. Maybe the dribble is somewhat because of that?? Maybe it is too much, not sure, you know your baby. . . just throwing out an idea!

Isn't that hilarious? :thumbsup2
Lily did that when she first started rolling, but has done it very few times since. She's just trying to figure out how to crawl now. :thumbsup2

Jake went in for his 6month well visit yesterday. He has had a fever for a week and a half, but his ears look good and his CBC came back good (good listen in the chest, too)-- so they think its from the teeth (fever of 100 or so).

Normally he has no issues with shots. We've never had issues. I decided to go ahead and give Jake the two flu shots yesterday too, so he had a total of 4 shots. 3 in one leg, one in another, and the rotovirus drink. His area just below his belly button (between both legs where they gave the shot) is swollen and he was up ALL NIGHT (also had a fever). I gave tylenol and it didnt help. Does anyone else have issues with shots, or ever had this happen?

His bottom to teeth are both completely through the gum now- so doc said he COULD be cutting another tooth (hes already cut 2 in a week and a half)... but i think its the shots.

ANy advice?

Oh no Maggie, I'm sorry.

Did they clear Motrin? maybe that would help? I know it is better for swelling.

Anyone want to join me on the school uniform thread? I'm having fun!

Lucas got swollen nodules after the H1N1 shot. It went away after a few days.
Do you mean the whole area is swollen or just the injection site? I'd call.

ArielRae, this is my favorite picture of Lucas when he was tiny. I can't remember how old he was, though. :( I'm pretty sure it was before 8 weeks, though.

My hands are cupping his head, DH is holding his back. (And man, the pedi was right!! Looking at this picture lucas definitely got MY skin tone.)

I get Lucas' pictures taken way too often. Sears puts those cards for cheap photo packages in all the American Baby/Parents magazines and keeps mailing them to me, too. Plus, I've got that Super Saver thing that gives me a free 8x10 anytime I want... so we go often.

His 1 year pictures we're going to an actual professional lady, though. Studio and all of that.

He didn't seem to have any issues with the cheese... no blood, no screaming, he's not refusing to eat (which is what he did with the cow's milk formula) so I'm hopeful that he really has outgrown it!!! I'm planning on trying cottage cheese tomorrow.
I've been trying not to get into his face and breathe on him while I'm so sick. He's really only gotten foods he can feed himself lately- cheerios, banana in the mesh thingie, toast, green beans, etc. so it'll be interesting to see his reaction to cottage cheese after having not been fed by me in so long.

How dare you post something that goes against the tenor of a thread?

I especially thought that it was funny when they demanded that you offer proof. I guess that it saved them from firing up google.

Hm. I read through it, but I'm so not diving into the middle of that! :rotfl:
I sorta feel the opposite way, though I'm not really 100% either way. My thoughts/feelings towards uniforms are based off of attenting a school full of people with money.

Even without labels, you can still tell who has money. You can tell who has nicer brands, who has enough to make it through the week, and who has to wear the same shirt 3 times a week and who has to wear their older siblings' hand me downs.

back to babies:)

The only nipple switch we have ever done is from level 1 and 2 Dr. Brown nipples to level 3 and 4. She only gets 2 (used to be 3) bottles a day at daycare anyway. At home she nurses (like right now-anyone see a pattern to my computer time:rotfl:)

Patsy- They give the shots really high up on the thigh, and its swollen in the middle. I can't tell if the injection sites are swollen bc i can't get passed the swollen fatty spot in the middle. Just the skin. He never reacted to the other shots so im thinking its either the Seasonal Flu or H1N1.

Sarah- they did clear Motrin :O) I am trying not to use it unless necessary but today was one of the times I needed to. Tylenol just isn't doing anything for him.

My biggest issue was that I don't fit into those dang brand name clothes that all my classmates wore. Abercrombie, Aeropostale, Hollister, etc. my girls were too big. :lmao: I was falling out of a DD by 7th grade. :rolleyes1 (sorry if that is TMI, but we have shared much more than that before!)
I did wear American Eagle jeans but that was the only name brand. Those things are comfy! I wish I could still fit in them. :lovestruc
I lived in T-shirts and jeans which was definitely not the norm where I went to school.
I loved band T-shirts, though, Sarah... so I could see that those definitely displayed my personality through the types of music I enjoyed.

Same place Lucas gets his. The only time I noticed a nodule was after he got the flu shots, too. I don't know why I just assumed it was the H1N1 but Lucas got both at the same time so it could have been either.
It did go away in a few days, though. I was all freaked out! DH told me to chill. A nurse did tell me, though, that if the site seems to bother them to wipe a Tucks (or other witch hazel soaked pad) on the area and it should alleviate some of their pain.

I SOOO love that picture! We go to sears every month, so you aren't the only one.

Here's the version we did (Isabel was 2 weeks old, exactly):

My hand's and DH's hands :)

Let us know how cottage cheese goes, glad to hear he is handling dairy well!
