I'm quite scared now ...
And when we are at WDW parks ? What do you suggest ?

Hi, Laura ( & Marco )
While your in your car you will be fine. If driving be sure to turn on your headlights and slow down. Just don't get out of your car if it is lightning unless you are under a covered area...if you are at a rest stop just wait before you get out, most storms will move through fast. (10-15 minutes) Please don't be scared just be informed, knowledge is your best defense. Disney is great about giving guest reports and will close all outdoor attractions if a storm is moving into the area. Once we where next to board the old Skyway to Tomorrowland and the CM stoped us from getting on...said that there was a storm cell moving into the area...at first where mad...because the people just ahead of us got on...then I said lets head back to the Resort...we boarded the monorail just as the storm hit...(staying at the Poly) so just pay attention to the CM's.

Following is a little information that will help:

Water, metal and high objects attract lightning. When an electrical storm starts, try to enter a building or your automobile as quickly as possible. Get in your car, not near it. You are safe in your car. Standing near a car increases your risk of being struck by lightening because you are standing near metal.
Avoid being the tallest object, so do not stand in the middle of a field or under a single tree that is the tallest object in your area. Standing under a tree that is shorter than other trees nearby is far safer. Standing makes you the tallest object, so, If you cannot get to shelter, go to a low spot and crouch down.

Don't stay near water. Just being near a lake, ocean or swimming pool increases your chances of being struck by lightning. Water sports such as swimming, fishing and boating increase your risk. Take the lifeguard's warnings seriously, get out of the water and go to the nearest shelter.

How to stay safe when lightning is around: use the 30-30 Rule!
The best defense is to plan ahead and avoid exposure to lightning when a thunderstorm occurs. Know where safe shelter is located and leave enough time to reach safe shelter before your danger level is high. Don't be an isolated tall object, and don't be connected to anything that may be an isolated tall object.

NSSL's scientists and collaborators did a study to find out how close is too close. They found that 80% of the next lightning strikes in a storm are within 2 to 3 miles of each other in Florida, but as far as 6 miles from each other in Oklahoma. Use the 'flash-to-bang' method to find the distance to lightning. Safe shelter must be reached by the time a flash is within 30 seconds flash-to-bang. In most cases, then, when you can hear thunder you are no longer safe.

But there is often blue sky in some direction while lightning is occurring nearby, and it may not be raining, so pay much more attention to the lightning than the rain. A particularly difficult situation is the first flash from a storm--watch for a storm that is growing quickly, such as when a storm is becoming very dark at its base or is growing very tall. An equally dangerous situation is when a storm appears to be finished, and only light rain and/or occasional thunder are heard, but the cloud overhead continues to be fairly dark. The most common situation for a lightning death or injury in Florida was found NOT to be in the heaviest rain area with lots of flashes, but after or before the time when rain and lightning was the most intense. So, the weak storm without too many flashes, at the edge of a larger storm, or early or late in the life of a storm is most dangerous.

The best shelter is a substantial building that has plumbing and wiring--in other words, one that is used or lived in by people for a major portion of the day. A very unsafe building for lightning has only a roof and some supports, but no wiring or pipes extending into the ground. A vehicle with a metal roof provides good shelter, and is much better than being in the open or in an ungrounded building, but is not as good as being in a building that is grounded by wires and pipes.

Welcome back MAGICinMYHEART ~ great info on lightning safety. I have always hated the lightning here in Florida. It scares me. I don't remember any lightning storms in New York like these daily rain storms in Florida. Seems like the lightning is right there next to me.

Sad without my counter. :(

Five more days til WL!!

Thanks for the lightening awareness training! DS is scheduled for two water-type excursions, so it's good to know that Disney knows the difference between "just rain" and "dangerous storm."

We check in to WL in 5 days, too. I want to see it on my counter, but I will be patient...

I've begun packing (do not laugh--I can hear you snickering out there...) and I wonder a silly thing

Should I ask for my coffee pot when I check in, or wait and call housekeeping later? I'm a major coffee snob so I'm packing my own. Same question when requesting turn-down service. Do I ask when I check in, or wait?

And I thought I was all questioned out.

While I'm sure either would be able to assist with your request housekeeping will be the ones to bring you the coffee pot, and do the turn-down service so I always wait until we are in the room to call for my request.

I actually start packing early when I remember something I can just add it to the suitcase. Cloths go in last just before we leave so less time to get wrinkled.

I have a restaurant question that I am posting here because I value the opinions of the Wilderness Lodgers.

We will be arriving at the Lodge by car this December. I expect to pull in between 9 AM and noon on a Sunday. I'd like to make our first night evening meal something special. I was wondering if we should dine at:

1. WCC
2. AP
3. take the monorail to 'Ohanas
4. or try another option

Our children will be 11 and 13 when we visit WDW and WL.
I heard the food at AP was very good. If it was just my wife and me I would do AP but I think our kids might enjoy the food and antics at WCC. Still, I wonder if the monorail ride over to 'Ohanas might be a nice way to kick off our trip.

Since we will be driving from Michigan, I wonder if we should stay around the Lodge and relax, swim and explore the resort. Just wondering which restaurant will get us moving in the right direction for a great Disney vacation. We will be doing Hoop Dee Doo the following evening and will begin visiting the parks two days after our arrival. I value your opinions and suggestions. Thanks for any and all help!

Mick-

If you figure the family will be exhausted from the drive, then I'd suggest WCC the first night (as part of a day of exploring "close to home". The anticipation of all that awaits outside the Lodge in the following days would be fun too.

Speaking of lightening at Disney. I remember when I was a teenager and we were at Disney World during the summer. We were wondering around Adventureland and a storm came up out of nowhere. We went for cover under the awning of the Sunshine Tree Terrace. Well, about five minutes into the storm, lightening struck about 20 feet from where we were standing. Actually made a crack in the ground where it struck. Right before the strike, all of us felt our hair stand on end. My dad showed us his arm and the hair was standing straight up. I felt the back of my neck tingle.

So, please listen to Becky, and take caution. Don’t be afraid but understand that it is definitely a threat.

Also, regarding watersports, while at the WL, I have seen the pool close down in a matter of seconds when a storm was approaching. They rope off the area and the CM’s keep watch so no one goes near the water while it is storming. I give them credit for doing this. It is a hard job to get all those kids out of the pool when technically it is still “sunny” out and no one realizes what is happening. They do their job well.

Ronald Duck,

WOW now that's a great satellite view, I can even see why the Lobby rooms are clasified as woods view on the North side...the drive is not all parking lot down to the North Wing just the rooms located between the lobby and the first wing.

Thanks.

After that long drive, I would stay put at the Lodge and enjoy both the pool and WCC! Then when Wishes is scheduled to begin, grab the next MK boat...and watch it from the boat!

Mick- I'm in agreement. There is something so special about hanging around the lodge and having lunch or dinner at WCC that first afternoon. It just gets you ready for the next day of fun! And there is so much to see at the lodge, and in December with the decorations!!!!!! You are going to be spellbound just like we were! :wizard:

Hey, does anybody know where the countdowns and signatures disappeared to?

......to Ronald, Cindy and tin-girl regarding our first day/night plans at WL. I think a day to relax and enjoy the Lodge will benefit everyone. The WCC will be our first "Disney" food experience. So that should "kick it up a notch" and get us started in the right direction on our WL and Disney vacation. Thanks again!

Mick- That's okay! Anybody who is planning his meals in Disney for December is okay in my book! I'm driving my family absolutely  trying to make dinner plans. And there are 2 families going, so it's even tougher trying to please everybody!

I can't wait and can't sleep, I'll be on the road to Disney this time tomorrow night!

Hi we have decided to stay at Wilderness Lodge the first week of Dec. Have thought about going with concierge but according to Disney's web page that is not an option. So does that mean that concierge is all booked up for our dates, or does it mean that it is no longer offered.

Thanks for the reply, and this is an awesome thread!
I could not decide and commit to WL until I read the first 30+pages in this thread. Thank you soo much.

If I request a king bed, where would my room most likely be?? For those of you who have stayed in both a king and queen/queen room with only 2 adults, which did you prefer??

Thanks for any suggestions!!
