Love your tag! I take it you worked at WDW for a time? Can you let us in on any "dirty little secrets"? You must be privy to some great gossip!
I don't know about gosssip or secrets, but I did enjoy opening WL. It's been 10 yrs. and doesn't feel like it. I worked at the WL for a year - a CM in WCC. Back then it was magic. I remember all of the activities prior to the opening of the hotel. In WCC, we all were allowed to pick our name tags (character names) and then began to develop the characters ourselves. It was sort of a new concept then. We spent DAYS working up skit ideas for dinner. It was not long until the stick horses were brought in. There was a time when we were allowed cap guns. Then we were only allowed water guns. Word got around that if you had a bigger squirt gun, diinner would be more fun. However, a busboy slipped and hurt himself (& a lot of dishes) and water guns were no more. I started the waving of the napkins above one's head.
Empowerment was a BIG hotel philosophy. We were told to solve our own guest service problems the way we saw fit. I also remember we printed party's (gang's) last name on the menu. I learned a lot about computers and printers that way.
I saw many famous people in WCC - most memorable - Sidney Poitier. He was the most wonderful, considerate guest/celeb I'd ever encountered. He did not use his status to get a table for his beautiful daughters. I wanted so badly to say, "Look who's come to dinner!" but we were forbidden to acknowledge famous guests. When the guy from CHEERS - George Wendt? came in for a private dinner, we were briefed and threatened NOT to yell NORM. Vannah White came in for dessert and she was so nice!
At the start, you didn't dare call a housekeeper anything except a LODGEKEEPER.
The changing rooms are near the smokehouse side of the hotel and your costume would arrive on a hanging conveyerbelt by swiping your ID - new at the time. There was also a cafeteria down there for CMS and quite good!
I have other memories and stories. Things have probably changed since the 1st yr., but WL is truly a magnificant hotel. I'd be happy to try to answer questions if possible.
