My frustration runneth over.
I had two AMAZING short runs last week, each a little less than 2.5 miles, both without even a tiny twinge of ITBS pain. So I went into my planned 3-miler Sat. with high expectations... only to have them dashed at less than 2 miles when pain nailed my knee yet again.
What the heck was different that time?! I can only pinpoint two semi-logical differences:
1. A much slower pace with a lot more walking, since I did Sat's run with my DS: 1:00/1:00 walk/run intervals. I strongly suspect the transition from run to walk is what's causing knee friction and the more often that friction occurs, the earlier pain will hit. I mostly ran my short runs with few walks and had no pain.
2. Sat follows a rest day. I'm not sure total rest is working for ITBS. I'm way stiff come Sat. morning and it takes a while to warm up.
So I'm going to tweak things and see what happens. This week I'm moving my runs to T, Th and Sat. Sun. will be a rest day following my long run Sat. M will be strength training, W pilates or ballet and F a walk + 20 mins of gentle yoga. I'm also tempted to make my short runs mostly walking for a while to make sure the inflammation in my knee goes away. Maybe 5:00walk/1:00run intervals?
I'm open to thoughts here - I'm starting to panic about falling behind in training!![]()
Princess v...I'll have a drink here at the wine and food festival and hope it makes you feel better !
Have you thought about not running for your training days...I can walk a 14 min mile so if it's an off day/twinges I just walk. So far it's been okay for me as my 5k on sat gave me a 12:32 min mile...improving me over my last race. How does the knee feel after weights, Pilates etc ?
