Just registered for my first Disney race :cool1:

Now I just have to reserve the hotel. I'm thinking of staying in one of the value resorts. I just checked the rates and it's giving me an average of $310-354 for a two night stay. Is there a code/discount that I can enter to get that price lowered?

hmmmmm.....you're giving me an idea that maybe I should just make my skirt instead of buy one, since I already have the compression shorts.

Has anyone here done this before and is there a good site for ideas or patterns? Also, what is the best type of fabric to use?

I just typed out a nice reply and it vanished, so I'll try this again.:) I recently made a skirt for a July 3 race. I bought a sparkle skirt for Expedition Everest, but wanted a patriotic skirt, so for half the price of one, I was able to make two skirts - one for me and another for a friend.

I don't really sew, and it wasn't that difficult. I did find a video online by doing a search that was a little helpful and I used the purchased skirt I had for reference. You just need an elastic waist band (found in any craft store)and I used whatever sparkly material I was able to find. I used an inch and a half wide waist band this last time, but I think next time, I would just go with an inch.

Fit the elastic to where you want it to sit on you, and pin it. Then sew a square around the seam to really hold it in place. I used red, white and blue fabric for my skirt and the blue was the fabric sewed to the waistband. You want that piece of fabric to be almost twice the size of the elastic when it's stretched out. I pinned the fabric to the center front and back first and then on side (so it was spaced out evenly) and then pinned it really well to the elastic. This part is easier if you have a sewing machine, but you need to stretch the elastic out as you sew the fabric to it. This was a pain on the first skirt I did and I had to undo the seams a few times to get it right. I was ending up with a lot of extra fabric. The second one was easier. But when it's done, you end up with a nice gather at the waist and it fit my (big) hips, without having to do any fancy patterns or panels or whatever it is you have to do. After it was sewed to the waistband, I sewed the red and white fabrics to the blue (to make the bottom half of the skirt -- they were almost like strips but not really). I didn't worry about the seam because that creates a ruffle like the one I bought has. Even if I was doing the same color, I would sew it in two parts to get that ruffle at the hip/thigh. I didn't worry about hemming the bottom and just cut the fabric to the length I wanted the skirt.

I hope that makes some sense. I'm sure anyone who sews could see the mistakes in my skirt, but I got a lot of compliments on it during the race. I plan on making my outfit for the Princess too.

If I knew how to include a picture, I would, but I don't know how to do that.

Happybaker, thanks for the info on how to make a skirt. I am a beginning sewer, so I have also considered trying to make my own. If you find the link to the video, I'd love to see it. I am a visual person, so you tube is very helpful!

I did a no sew skirt last year and probably will do a Tiana purple and green one this year. A bunch of girlfriends got together and did a tu tu making party. In order to get the full length that I want I think I uses 3yrds of each color as well as I cut about 100 6 inch strips. I wanted mine short and poofy. Last year my colors were black and red. It was fun to make. I will make mine over the course of a week this year rather than 1 day. Just my random rambling Lol!! So much to plan as we stay off site because of the size of my family and we tend to travel with in laws as they help while doing parks and just sitting for us.
So I just have to scroll and scroll through houses until 1 meets my needs. Last year must have was access to jacuzzi!

Yay! Flights are booked. We won't be getting in until 2pm on Friday and we'll be flying out at 745am on Monday. Wish we could spend time at the parks on Monday but our sitter situation is that we have to be home as early as possible on Monday.

I can relate. Since I'm coming without my husband and daughter, my plan is to fly home Sunday night. :worried:

Julie and I just kind of blindside the husbands on the length of stay issue. Our first year we did Friday afternoon to Monday morning. Last year, b/c Julie got a great discount with her annual pass, we included Thursday night and still left Monday morning. This year, no AP but, somehow, we are still planning on Thursday - Monday but flying (we drove last year and got in late) so perhaps we can get in earlier on Thursday and enjoy at least DTD or check out some of the swanky hotels. I figure that if we keep this up, we can just keep sneaking half days in there until we are there for pretty much the whole week! :thumbsup2

Here's the link to the video I watched. She says you can make it in 15 minutes for 5 bucks....yeah, not so much! At least not for me. I think my fabric was about $5/yard and I had the three colors. I got a yard of each just to be safe. And it took me a few days to do the first one because I didn't want to stress myself out working on it and give it bad jujus :rotfl: The second one I did I was able to do in a couple of hours from start to finish.

How do you make a tutu? Although, I want a Belle outfit (not sure if I want bookish Belle or Princess Belle) and she really doesn't wear a tutu.

When my gf and I did Tinker Bell earlier this year, we flew in Friday and flew home Monday. We'll do the same for 2013. But so far, I'm planning to go alone to FL so I will make it a quick turnaround...at least that's the plan. Plans have a way of changing though! :hyper:

I would say for your FIRST 5k, you want to find one in the fall...
BUT... don't use the heat as an excuse not to train outside, even if you have a treadmill.
Hi there, another Floridian here! ITA with amykay - we don't even have many races scheduled around here until late fall because it's just too hot for racing. I do almost all of my training outdoors, though, adjusting pace and intensity for the heat, and I'm certain it'll pay off big when the weather finally cools off! :thumbsup2 Also, rain is my new BFF; barring lightning, I'll take a run in the rain over sunshine any day.

I am not doing the big race, but I am signed up for the 5K that weekend....
I did the Princess 5K this year and had a blast - you'll love it!

Okay, I'm all caught up - great reading! I have no flights to reserve, can't think about booking a room until AP rates are released, and don't plan on doing a costume, but I'm really enjoying hearing about everyone else's planning; it makes it all feel real. :)

For those Galloway-ers doing the TOT 10-Miler and the Princess, what do you plan to do as far as training? I'm waiting to see how I feel then, but I'm really enjoying my long runs of 5 miles or more on the weekends, so I'm not sure I'll want to drop back down at the beginning of the Princess plan...

This is the video I used to make my DD's brithday tutu. Of course fabric would have to be adjusted to fit adults.

Welcome to all the new princess:

My back was bothering me today so I did the NuStep at the gym. I logged over 4 miles in a little over 53 minutes! Now, I just need to do that standing up and 3.5 times more. :)

I'm reading Marathons for Mortals. They have a 14 week training program for walking an half. I think that is what I'm going to follow. Any other training programs that you ladies suggest that I look into?

I am using Galloway and am really liking it since I can customize it for me

I've got you all beat - I will be 61 next month!! I'm still excited from this morning's run - 7-1/2 weeks out of chemo, and I ran 4.23 miles at an average pace of a bit over 13mm! This was using a run walk ratio of 30 seconds walk to 60, 90, or 120 seconds running. Be strong, wonderful ladies - you can do this!!!

You are amazing and inspirational! That is wonderful

I booked our flight on Southwest Airlines today out of San Francisco. I thought the airfare cost was pretty good and we were able to use our points on two of the return tickets. I'm SO glad that it's taken care of.

Question of the night: What time do you go to bed before the race and how in the world did you fall asleep early? I was just thinking and if I need to get up at 2:30 to get ready, if I go to bed at 10 and fall right asleep that is only 4.5 hours. How did you do it?

I read somewhere it only matters how much sleep you get two nights before. So make sure Friday night you get a good nights sleep and then the 4.5 on sat night will be ok to get you through.

Oh nooo ! I will be flying out of Philadelphia at 7:40 on Saturday morning! That means I'll be up by 4 am to get to the airport :( I guess I'll have to go to bed extra extra early and sleep on the plane...
Good tip though, thanks!

Like I said this may sound crazy and it may NOT be for everyone, but the day before the PHM 2012 my friend and I did the Keys to the Kingdom tour - it was a long leisurely walk through the park for a few hours with lunch in the middle. Afterwards we grabbed some pasta for dinner and were tucked into bed by 8pm.! We were tired enough to fall asleep quickly and were ready to get up for the race with no problem... This year I will be with my DD14 and I am not sure what to do - but I think we definitely need to do something to tire us out so we can get to bed as early as possible. With the Keys tour we HAD to be there before opening so we had a full day in when we left in the early afternoon.

Love that tour. :)

I never get a good nights sleep before a race. I am always waking up every hour or so. Much too excited to sleep. I also have bad dreams about missing the race.

Maybe I'll do that tour the day before the race. I always say I'm going to take one of the tours "someday," but still have yet to take one.

I know exactly where I'm going to have my celebratory dinner though; Be Our Guest restaurant. :goodvibes

That would be my problem as well, both the excitement, and being worried about oversleeping.
