pas130 and k&a&c'smom, thank you for the concern. We called last night and the payment went through! To add to the magic we booked our tickets for MVMCP. We have been glowing ever since. :goodvibes

Diamond_Girls, are you booking an outer building? The top floor rooms of the outer buildings have dormer rooms. Their balconies are slightly smaller and slightly enclosed. We had a dormer in Boca Chica. I can tell you that if you sit you don't see much. Most other rooms, on the second and third floors in particular, have balconies that afford decent views. I'm sure there are posters here who could give you much better details on specific rooms etc.

followthatmouse - Wonderful news, I'm so glad everything is ironed out before you get there. High five on the MVMCP tickets, exciting.

We are booking a standard room and saw a note that not all rooms have full balconies? How can I tell what location to request to insure I get one? I apologize in advance because I'm sure it's already referenced in this thread but I have not been able to find anything. Thanks!

Welcome!:goodvibes Don't worry about asking questions, that's why we're here.:thumbsup2

I'm not sure why they would say not all rooms have full balconies - nearly every room in the resort has one! Why worry new guests? As followthatmouse mentioned, some of the rooms on the upper floors have an enclosed balcony - but they are still a full balcony! I have some photos that will help you envision the difference.

In this photo, you can see the 4th and 5th floors of Boca Chica have rooms with their own little roof. These rooms are called dormer rooms, and you have to stand to see out of the balcony.

This is a close up of the more open balconies, on the marina side of SL.

And here is a photo from inside a dormer room, you can see what the dormer balcony looks like - it isn't just a standing balcony, like at BC, but has room for a table and chairs.

HTH!:sunny:

We arrived yestyerday:cool1:

We are in a dormer room in SL and love i! Everything is as wonderful as we had hoped. I can see how the construction would be a little off putting for those that have been before but it isn't that noticeable and I am glad we didn't change our minds based on it. I think I have found my new favorite though…up until now I was a diehard BWI CL fan. :thumbsup2

The lounge offering are outstanding. We have stayed at WL, AKL and BWI and nothing comes close.

Thanks for all of the info that was provided here :goodvibes. It helped tremendously with all the planning.

Off to MK todayfor a bit:banana:

Glad you made it safely and are happy with SL! We were in a dormer room there last month and loved it.

Good point about the construction. You really can't see if from most of the resort (except the big crane!) and if you aren't judging the resort of past stays it really isn't that bad.

Have fun in the MK and enjoy those scones this afternoon. :wizard:

Thanks, pas, we can't wait!! Your trip is right around the corner.:)

CoachBagFanatic - thanks for the PBH info, very helpful! We have a garden view booked, but are LoewsFirst members, so maybe we'll end up with an upgrade.:thumbsup2 We love HRH, and RPR was great, too, so I'm hoping we love PBH even more.

LOL about the shower stall, reminds me of DD when she was in the college dorm - her biggest complaint was she couldn't shave her legs.

I have not started packing, you have hit on my dirty little secret - I'm a last minute packer!:rotfl: I try to start early, but usually have favorite items that need to be washed and packed the day before. If I start too soon, I forget what's in the suitcase and have to take it all out to be sure I have what I need. It's a problem, I know.

To keep this (somewhat) on topic - have you noticed how much shallower the US hotel pools are compared to WDW? I did not remember it at HRH, but noticed on US threads that they are rarely over 4 ft. deep - some are 3-1/2! I love the 6 ft. section in the GF courtyard pool, we often hang out there until we are pruney.:goodvibes
The PBH beach pool is a wader almost 1/2 way from zero entry...great for kiddos. I think the villa pool is deeper sooner...I couldn't tear my babes from the beach pool :rotfl: Hence our May trip has become a HRH CL trip...don't ask...I get my WDW trip in sept at RPC  I am a same day packer...don't be ashamed...we last minute packers are extremely efficient :goodvibes You will have a wonderful trip!

BCV23 - I do try so hard to remember there are many of you who have been longing for a GFV! I am happy for those of you who love the GF and will now have more opportunities to stay there.

LOL, I doubt the GFV will lead to more opportunities to stay at the GF for us. We have too many other favorites. However, now we'll be able to enjoy the GF in the comfort of a villa. Can't wait for that.

I was wondering if anyone knew what the estimated finish date was for the GF construction? Or if you could point me to where I can read about it? We are planning a few nights prior to our cruise next June 2013 and as much as I want to book RPC, I'm concerned about what the view might be at that time. The overall construction isn't a big concern for us and would not deter us from booking at the Grand, but my favorite room view is of the beach pool with the Poly in the distance, and depending on what the view might be at that time would have an impact on whether or not I book there. So any input would be greatly appreciated. TIA :flower3:.

The DVC website lists "late 1013" as an estimate for the opening. I would guess that by next June, the outside part of construction would be finished. Just a guess but when BLT was built, the whole tower was up for some time as they finished the inside.

As for seeing the Polynesian from RPC, Bethclayton's photos may help you there. I don't remember exactly where her room was located (other than facing the construction) but from that room, it appeared to me that the GCH and longhouses West of it would be blocked but Hawaii, Tahiti and the two Eastern beaches will be visible.

Here's a more recent view of the construction from mousesteps that I saw posted on the DVC forums:

RPC and a cruise......:cloud9: Have fun!

Beth and Sarah, really enjoyed your reviews. I agree with everyone else. It's good to read the good and not so good. Thanks for sharing with us.:surfweb:

It’s taken me a little while, but I want to post my thoughts/reviews of our stay at the GF from April 16 – 21.:goodvibes

As you may recall from my initial posts on this thread, we were originally booked to stay at the BC for this trip but changed to the GF at exactly four weeks out when we learned that a significant portion of SAB was going to be closed during our stay:scared1:. (NB, from what I understand the work on SAB ended up being finished before we got there so everyone staying at the BC can thank me for that – because that’s exactly the kind of luck we have. :rotfl2::rotfl::lmao: But we still have no regrets at all about the switch).

We arrived at the GF around 11 a.m. via DME and were greeted by a CM with a clipboard. This happened when we stayed there last time because we were in Sugarloaf, but since we were booked with a standard gardenview room this time, I had a momentary flicker of excitement thinking we’d been upgraded :hyper: but instead she just escorted us to the next available CM at the check-in counter, Peter from the U.K. Oh well, no upgrade but it was still a nice, friendly way to arrive.:thumbsup2 Peter was “earning his ears” and was very friendly and thorough. I asked if he could see which building we were assigned to and he said Sago Cay. I had suspected that we might end up here because I’d noted, “away from construction” on our reservation, but I wasn’t thrilled about this because I was unsure of what the garden views would be like. I asked if there was any chance we could get a room in Boca Chica instead. Peter immediately got on the phone with the room assignor and got it settled. He even asked if we preferred a ground or high floor. I said anything above the ground floor was fine and we ended up with a fifth floor dormer room. Last time we stayed at the GF we asked to be switched out of the dormer room we were assigned too (oh gosh, I’m sounding a bit like a diva here, I promise I’m not:laughing:) but this time I decided to roll with it. I was thrilled that our room was ready, even with my requested change.

Once we were checked in we headed over to our room. We couldn’t quite figure how to get to the main door of Boca Chica, not wanting to cut through the pool deck with our luggage, so we went allll the way around to the left (towards Narcoosseee’s) and went in. After a couple of trips in and out of the building we figured out the shortcuts:thumbsup2. Our room was a couple of doors down from the elevator, which was very handy. I found the dormer room to be quite charming and was glad we didn’t switch. It was nice to try something different and I didn’t end up missing the couch like I thought I would. We moved the bench from the end of the bed over between the chair and the TV stand and that allowed us a place to store our miscellany, which is basically all we use the couch for anyway.

The view from our balcony was stunning – we were right over the courtyard pool and had a nice view of Sugarloaf and the main building as well. We freshened up, took some pictures and got ready to head off to Epcot. As we went to store our documents and valuables in the safe, we noticed that the lock bar was popped out and we weren’t able to reset the safe with a code. We called maintenance and they told us we had to be in the room for the repair and it could be an hour or two. Now here’s where I have a beef with Disney resorts in general, I just hate that when you call down for something you’re really talking to a call center, not someone on site. I had DH hand me the phone and asked to speak to a manager, as I didn’t think it was right that we’d have to sit in our room for an hour or two waiting for what was probably a simple repair. The CM was, quite frankly, pretty rude to me and said she’d have someone call me back (which never happened):furious:. At this point I told DH to take a walk down to the lobby and talk to someone there. Within a few minutes he texted me that they were sending someone right up and within like a minute there was a knock on the door. The very nice CM from maintenance did a quick reset and we were good to go! All this happened before DH could even get back to the room. He was so impressed that he stopped in the lobby on the way out and relayed his thanks to the General Manager.

With that settled we decided to walk to the TTC via the Poly. This was our first view of the construction going on. To be honest, I was sad to see the state of our beloved GF to Poly path:(. It’s obvious they put a lot of landscaping effort around the construction walls but it just isn’t the same and I fear it never will be. We did the GF to Poly walk a couple of times for the Monorail. I never did time it to see if it’s faster/longer/the same as taking the Monorail to the TTC and waiting for the switch, but we like walking and it feels like we’re making progress because we’re always moving. I don’t find the transportation from GF to Epcot to be ideal (I feel like there should be a faster way), it’s one of my negatives about the resort.

When we came back to the room the first night, DD was delighted to find that her bed had been turned down and her beloved chocolates were awaiting!:cloud9: I didn’t realize that they offered automatic turndown service in the standard rooms so that was a treat. I was less than delighted to realize that the movies on the beach had been moved to the courtyard smack below our window:headache:. At this point I was thanking goodness that we were on the highest floor possible because I could hear the noise in our room and I imagine it was worse on the ground floor. I was a bit tense at this point but it turned out to be the only night it was an issue because the other nights of the trip we didn’t come back to the room until the movie was over anyway.

After being up since 3 a.m. I practically fell into bed and fell sound asleep until an awful noise woke me up at 4 a.m. It must’ve been really loud because I had earplugs in and I heard it through them (I routinely sleep with earplugs in hotels to drown out the little, unfamiliar noises). Turns out it was the mini fridge vibrating like crazy and making really loud noises. DH reached behind the dresser and unplugged it, then set off to get some ice for the juice we had in there (probably could’ve just left it but in my delirious state I insisted the poor guy find ice). We didn’t plan to use the fridge much so we ended up leaving it unplugged for the rest of the trip. I did notice some other noises coming from that same wall and I’m not sure if it was our neighbor’s fridge or some sort of piping back there (sometimes it sounded like water). It was not enough to keep me awake so I eventually was able to let it fade into the background::yes::.

I wish we’d had a chance to take advantage of more dining options at the GF, but since this was a last minute change our dining plans had already been set in stone for months and I was hesitant to change things around. I did switch our YSH dinner to Citricos and I’m so glad I did. Citricos was fantastic – the food and service was top-notch and I’d say the atmosphere is among my favorite of the signatures. The only other GF eatery we went to was Gasparilla’s. The food was pretty good although I’m half and half on the seating area. I found it a little too chilly due to the high speed ceiling fans above and with the arcade games right nearby, it’s not all that relaxing. The outdoor seating area is lovely though.

We didn’t do a ton of pool time on this trip due to schedules and weather. We spent a couple of late afternoons at the courtyard pool, which is just beautiful and relaxing (once the games end by about 5:30 – not a fan of the loud games). The feature pool was not looking all that enticing to us with all the walls around so we didn’t end up over there except one evening to take pictures.

The lobby is just a wonderful place to sit and relax, take in the music and to people watch. I love the variety of shops there too.

I covered a little bit about transportation above, but other than my Epcot complaints, I found the transportation ran pretty well. I loved the quick boat ride from MK – usually we took the Monorail to MK and the boat coming home. Bus service was better than I remember although I will admit we took cabs a couple of times – one morning when running late for DHS and coming back from Epcot in a downpour (we were back by France so we scooted out the back and got a cab from the BC). But all in all, the waits for the buses were not long at all.

I found the CMs at the GF to be very friendly and helpful::yes::. I’ll share one vignette as an example – one day when we were coming back to our room DD realized that she’d lost the backing off of one of the pins attached to her camera case strap. She started to get a little upset and we were looking all over the path trying to find it. One of the CMs on a golf cart saw us and stopped the cart to get out and looked too. Of course the backing was lost who knows how long ago so we couldn’t find it. The CM said if we went to any shop he was sure they’d give us a replacement backing. (We ended up buying the brass “locking” backs the next day.) On our last day we were coming back to our room and the same driver saw us – he stopped and asked if we’d been able to get DD a new back. How nice is that? I was shocked that he remembered and it was a really nice touch.

To be honest, the last time we stayed at the GF we had a string of really poor CM interactions. It really left us with a not-so-great impression of the resort and I wasn’t sure if we’d stay there again. I’m so very glad we gave GF another shot because our experience was really night and day from last time!

I think that about covers it – if you have any questions let me know and thank you to everyone on this thread for answering all my last minute questions and just generally being a great group to talk to!:goodvibes

Littlestinkerbelle, thank you so much for your review and thoughts on your stay. It sounds like many of us have similar thoughts about the construction, it can be avoided at the GF, but the vibe and noise level around the courtyard pool has changed, not for the better. We too missed the walk to the Polynesian. We rarely go back into the parks at night now that our "kids" are in their 20s. After dinner I love to relax in the GF lobby and when the music ends walk to the Polynesian, watch WISHES and then walk back. It's just not the same right now.

Yes, the nightly turndown service at the GF, in any room is wonderful. Funny how having your bed turned down, chocolates on the pillow and fresh towels make you feel so luxurious!

I loved your story about the CM and the pin backing. Sometime's it's just a little thing act of kindness, his remembering your daughter that makes a day special :wizard:

BVC23, good point about the construction. Hopefully by next year at this time, the buildings will be done and the work will all be inside. That should be so much less intrusive! I will just be sooo excited when the walls come down and we have a beach again...as well as a nice walk to the Polynesian! We are counting on you to stay at the new villas though when they are complete...we need a review!!! :surfweb:

k&a&c'smom, I hope I didn't miss your departure. Have a safe and wonderful trip! Enjoy spending time with your daughter :cloud9:

RPC and a cruise......:cloud9: Have fun!

Thank you :flower3:. It would be nice if the outside construction was done by June next year. The view of the Poly won't be what it used to be, but hopefully some of the resort will be visible. I will look up BethClayton's pics....thanks for that suggestion :goodvibes.

Thanks about the cruise......I am really looking forward to it as it will be our first Disney cruise :boat:. And of course one has to plan a stay at a Disney resort since we'll be right there ;)....and what better way to start off the vacation than at the GF :cloud9:.

It’s taken me a little while, but I want to post my thoughts/reviews of our stay at the GF from April 16 – 21.:goodvibes

Thanks for your review :). I'm glad you decided to give the GF another try and glad this stay was better than in the past :goodvibes. I agree about Gasparilla's.......those arcade games are too much, IMO :sad2:. Not only is it very loud in there, but those games take up alot of space that could be used for seating. Glad you had a great trip :wizard:.

I will just be sooo excited when the walls come down and we have a beach again...as well as a nice walk to the Polynesian!

Me too ::yes::.

I suspect k&a&c'smom is down in FL by now, I hope she is having a wonderful time!

A photo of where I would rather be :goodvibes, than getting ready to go outside and weed the flower beds.

LOVE the photo!

Thanks for the good wishes, I've been so busy this weekend, I haven't had time to get on the DIS. DD returned from school after midnight Friday night, and we got up early and headed out shopping for swimsuits, getting hair cuts, etc.:goodvibes

Today, we've been unpacking her belongings and trying to find a place to store everything until August.

We leave on Wednesday morning, so I'll be around a couple more days - and I'm taking my laptop along, if I have time to post.;)

I'm so surprised you've switched to US/IOA for May - or, is it already changed.:lmao: I didn't check your ticker.

Thanks about the packing, good to know I'm not alone.:p I have two days, haven't even gotten the suitcases out yet.;)

LOL, I doubt the GFV will lead to more opportunities to stay at the GF for us. We have too many other favorites. However, now we'll be able to enjoy the GF in the comfort of a villa. Can't wait for that.

:thumbsup2

Thanks for the info from the DVC boards, and link to mousesteps. I think your guess on the timeline for construction is quite likely, at least we all hope so.:)

ukintheus - Glad you arrived safe and sound, and are enjoying the Grand.:goodvibes I hope you are having a magical stay.pixiedust:

Little Stinkerbelle - thanks for your review, I'm glad you enjoyed the resort overall and do not regret your choice. LOL about guaranteeing the other BC guests that SAB would be open during your visit! We have that kind of luck, too.

I'm so glad your interaction with the CMs was so much better than your last stay, and I, too, enjoyed the story about the pin backing. Truly great service, and what you expect from WDW and the Grand.:cloud9:

k&a&c'smom, I add my good wishes for a wonderful trip for your sweet daughter and you. Have a blast!

Jungle Cruiser, can't wait to post a review of GFV. :cool1: I hope and would guess that the beach area will open up long before the building is complete. Looking at the video from mousesteps, it appears to be separate construction, doesn't it?

I also hope when construction is finished that the walk to the Polynesian is as special as ever. It will be different, of course, but I am betting on the Imagineers to make it as lovely.

I love your evening tradition. Now that our children are grown, we rarely go back to the parks in the evening but I've never done your particular custom. we have loved the walk back to the Polynesian after dinner at the GF.

Pas, I meant to congratulate you on GF TPV but it sounds as if you have already switched? :rotfl::rotfl: Happy planning!

jungle cruiserThe photo made me smile.Ahhhhhh...thank you :goodvibes

The switch is for this trip,, still at GF for Sept :cheer2: I will also be checking out those DVC GF villas :thumbsup2

It’s taken me a little while, but I want to post my thoughts/reviews of our stay at the GF from April 16 – 21.

Thank you fryour honest and thorough review. Sorry the CY pool area isn't quite as peaceful. Glad you had great CMs this stay :flower3:

Me, too! When our children were young, it sometimes ended up being last minute just because there was not an extra minute in the day but now that I have time on my hands, just can't wait!

I am normally just a lurker on this thread, but found it so helpful while we were planning our trip, I wanted to post a review of our stay at the GF last week. :)

We went to WDW for our 20-year vow renewal and used DVC points to stay in an RPC room for 3 nights for the first part of our trip. There were 4 of us -- myself, dh, our 19yo ds and his girlfriend (her first trip -- she loved it!). It was our 2nd stay at the GF, but our first in the main building.

We were met by Inder who escorted us up to the 3rd floor and checked us in right in the room. The room was right off the lobby and at any other time (other than during construction), would've been my dream room. The view was of the pool and beach and of course THE CONSTRUCTION. We knew beforehand that we could end up with that view, so we weren't upset, it just really detracted from our enjoyment of the balcony obviously.

The other negative aspect of being placed near the construction was the constant jackhammering that went on ALL DAY LONG. But what can you do? And as it happens, my brother is a site supervisor for the company that is building the GF DVC, so it was all completely expected, as he's been keeping us filled in.

Otherwise, we very much enjoyed our stay. The room was immaculate and spacious, the beds were comfy, and the CMs were lovely. We loved staying in the main building for the convenience of it, and for the atmosphere. Even my ds kept telling me how much he loved the GF, especially being able to step into the lobby and listen to the band! Which is really funny to me because this is a kid who has multiple piercings and tattoos and loves techno and death metal, and he was raving over the band! :rotfl:

The grounds were as beautiful as ever, and we took lots of photos there after our vow renewal. Our photographer definitely made use of all of the pretty spots inside and outside the main building. :)

There was one thing that did bum me out though ... our first afternoon the family went up for food in the lounge and my husband asked if it had been prepared by folks wearing latex gloves, as I am allergic and have to be careful. The chefs happened to be nearby, so they came over and Chef Sean-Paul (I *think* that was his name!) who was very kind, told me that I needed to stay away from ALL food in the lounge, as it was all prepared with latex gloves. He did offer to have food specially prepared for me, but I told him no thank you, as 1) I hate to bother anyone to do up anything special, and 2) the idea of having to call down and have something special made up sort of detracts from the whole concept of grabbing something quick in the lounge.

The other thing he told us was that latex was the standard at every restaurant at the GF and all over property. I questioned this, because over the years, it was my understanding that they'd transitioned to vinyl as a standard. He told me that I was wrong, and that I'd need to be very careful. This was pretty devastating to me, as WDW has always been a safe place for me, and now every meal was going to be a problem. HOWEVER, we quickly learned that he was wrong. Everywhere we went, we were told repeatedly that vinyl was the standard, and the chefs were happy to show us the vinyl glove boxes. This was even at Gasparilla Grill. Needless to say, it was a huge relief and I experienced no problems at any restaurants. It was sort of annoying that the chef had caused us unneeded concern, but again, I was just so happy that he was wrong!

So all that being said, we loved the GF and would happily stay there again, hopefully in one of the DVC villas. :goodvibes

I'm starting to get a little worried about the construction. We will be staying at GF for the first time at the end of October. We wanted a monorail resort, because our boys will be 5 and almost 3 at the time of our visit and the atmosphere of GF appealed to us the most. We plan on spending a great deal of time at MK but also wanted to be able to take my younger son back to the resort for a nap. There's a part of me that thinks I'm kidding myself that my son will even nap in a hotel room, so the other positives about GF should be the deciding factor not the possibility of noise. Any thoughts? There's really no resort with a guarantee of quiet mid-day with other activities going on, right?

I think I'm just freaked overall of flying and sharing a room with my kids for the first time. I would love to hear from some other folks with little ones.

Thanks so much!

The majority of the rooms in the resort are away from the construction and the construction noise. We were there a few weeks ago for an expended stay and NEVER heard any construction noise in SL. If you look at a map, the buildings near the marina shouldn't hear anything, including noise from the pool. I don't know what kind of room you booked, but good options for a GV room are Sago Cay and Conch Key. Big Pine Key is the least preferable since it is nearer to the construction and will have some afternoon noise from the kids's games at the Courtyard Pool. You shouldn't have a problem with a request.

pixie921, thank you for the review. The best reviews are the honest ones, since it helps other's consider what may be important to them. That latex gloves being used in food preparation is not an issue for us, but for something else it may be important!

BVC23, I agree that the walk to the Polynesian will improve once the outside construction is done, the landscaping is in and the WALLS COME DOWN! :scared: I remember when they built the Wedding Chapel and that changed things. However it isn't an issue at all any more. We can get used to almost anything :upsidedow Our other favorite night time stroll is around the Boardwalk when we stay at the BC. It is so relaxing after a nice dinner. Amazing how much trips change when your children are grown up.

k&a&c'smom, have a great trip! Glad to know we didn't miss your departure. I am a member of the LMPC, however I now only have to pack for me, no little ones. It makes it a lot easier!!!:)

We will try to answer questions in k&a&c'smom's absence. No letting this thread fall to page 2! You are going to have to help me out pas and BVC23...chemo tomorrow so I may be out of the loop for a couple of days :headache:

In the event of Jeanette and BCV23 being unable to serve in the capacity as substitute k&a&c'smom and Jungle Cruiser, I shall heretofore try my darndedest to not this this beloved thread fall to depths only seen before by the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Nautilus...

Hurry back soon, JC:grouphug:
