pas130, bowbat and pixarmom-- I'm glad that you found the review helpful. I try not to "sugar coat" my reviews, but do hope that the main takeaway is that we had a great stay. I wish we could repeat it all over again. :)
pas130- your DH is right, but I agree with you that it is definitely worth seeing at least once! We felt that MVMCP and the resort decorations made the entire trip worthwhile.
bowbat- I definitely believe you that one can get used to it quickly! Come late January, I want to be away from the cold entirely! I do love my snow in December, though..

pixarmom- Your memory serves you correctly! As crazy as it sounds to me to say now, I joined the DIS when I was 11. I developed a passion for WDW when I was in elementary school and, by 6th grade, had developed an even stronger passion for WDW hotel planning... random, I know! My mom came across this site while helping me research for our trip to the CR in 2001 and suggested that I join since I loved planning so much. Given that my dad and siblings are not that crazy about WDW and my mom only had a "normal" passion for it at the time, I suppose I was a bit of an anomaly. My mom's love for WDW has almost grown to my level now, but I am still the only family member (or person I know, for that matter) on the DIS.

Interestingly, I never posted on any of the teenage or community/for fun forums when I first joined. I only knew about the trip planning forums and exclusively posted advice/questions there since I did not care about much else. I found that some DISers would not realistically take the hotel advice of an 11-yr old, though, so often just posted as if I was my mom since it required less explanation and I did not enjoy being patronized. I was always pretty mature, though, and did not have trouble writing convincingly as an "adult." As time went on, I gradually shifted to writing from my perspective and was able to help out DISers with questions pertaining to kids that were my age. Nearly eleven years later, I am an adult myself. Time flies. Looking back, it was sort of weird that I felt the need to portray myself as someone older, but I suppose that is just how I saw myself when it came to planning. I researched and knew a LOT even at age 11 and wanted to be taken seriously.

Given that you already know your children's planned screenames and are on the DIS yourself, I do not think it would be too difficult to supervise how and what they are posting. I know that my knowledge about WDW would not be nearly what it is today without my having joined the DIS at such a young age, so I fully support allowing them to join for that reason. That being said, I joined the DIS for the trip planning aspect-- not the "for fun" forums that can be a waste of time and distract kids from more important real-life activities. Here again, though, you can monitor that. Depending on their true intentions, I say let them join. Better that you know their screenames than that they go behind your back and create accounts that you are unaware of!

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions about being a teenager on the DIS! I hope this (sort of long-winded) explanation helped.

Mariamouse - Thank You for the review of your recent stay. It confirmed what I always thought about staying at GF for a visit during the Christmas Season. I showed DH what you said, as I have hopes of a stay in Nov/Dec of 2012 or 2013.

eah7 - I think Citricos will be more to your liking, we've always had good dinners there. Narcoossee's menu can be hit or miss - mostly hit, but I never order surf and turf, or just surf, any more. I've had rubbery lobster and tasteless filet once too often.:headache:

Good luck with your dining plans! I rarely get mine set until about a month before we leave, but then, I don't look for the hard to get restaurants.

pas130 - Oh, no! I'm sorry you won't be heading to RPC next year, but I do understand. DD and I are thinking about a May trip, but the discount isn't great at the GF. We will probably end up at BC, too, which is OK - we love being there in the warm weather!

WDWKOOK - thanks for the link!:thumbsup2

pixarmom - I agree, pas makes great choices.:goodvibes

mariamouse - welcome back!:yay: Thanks for the review, I'm glad to hear you had a great trip overall, but sorry to hear about the room. Did you speak with the manager while you were there? I think I would have at least asked that the balcony be swept, no reason you should have to avoid it - how can you enjoy your lagoon view without a balcony?!

We must be in the small minority who love the palm trees and sun during December, lol. My DH and I were just discussing how we'd love to live where we had to mow grass at Christmas.:rotfl:

I am glad that the review was helpful to you! Hopefully your DH agrees to a holiday trip. You'll have a great time. :santa:

Thanks, k&a&c'smom! We did not bother speaking with the manager since it was such a short stay and we did not have much time every day to use the balcony anyway. Had it been a longer stay and a more expansive view, we probably would have asked for it to be swept. My mom and sister did not seem phased by it as much as I was, so I just went with the flow and let it be.

And I do not blame you for enjoying the sun in December! I am sure that I am the one who is actually in the minority. ;)

Possibly a weekend trip next year for DH and I....he LOVED going to WDW just he and I :goodvibes just cruising the resorts would be perfect....maybe no bump from RPC next time...

It would be lovely :lovestruc

It's all good. And we can try something new. The decor is nice and light at BC. And since we are at WDW for a week, we have plenty of time to enjoy SAB :cloud9:

I have been reading but not posting the past couple of weeks. A lot going on here, but things are settling down. Mercifully my health has been good, and since I am on a break from chemo I have been busy with normal life!:flower3:

Two weeks from now we will be landing in Orlando! The first 4 nights are CL at the Polynesian and the last 6 nights CL at the BC. It's a trip with my daughters, the first part of the trip is with one daughter who has to leave to go back to work and the second with my other daughter before she returns to graduate school.

I absolutely LOVE the GF, but that being said I do like to occasionally stay at other resorts. Every spring for the past 10 years my younger daughter and I have spent a week at the GF. That's our special time there and evokes such wonderful memories. My husband and I go in the fall for a couple of weeks and if we can get a good AP discount we stay at the GF then also. He loves the WL, so we have stayed there several times. I get to go so often I let him have some say in where we stay during our fall trip. ;) However, I have to say I don't ever want to get to the point (like some friends we have) that the GF is the only place I will stay. I am excited to see the fireworks from the CL lobby at the Polynesian and I stayed at the BC once years ago and really enjoyed it. We will still walk to grounds of the GF, are eating at Narcoossees and will enjoy the lobby at the GF. I love the GFC, that's where breakfast New Year's Day will be  So, I may not be staying there, but I can enjoy a lot of what the GF has to offer. I also plan to sneak into Sugar Loaf to see Robert who works at the Concierge desk. We have become friends over the years during our stays there. He is trying to get me to go on Tower of Terror (he worked on the opening crew years ago), it will never happen! :scared1: It's fun to have a banter with a cast member you see trip after trip.

pas130, I am fairly confident that at some point in 2012 you will be at the RPC. AND it will probably happen when you least expect it! Some pixie dust and Disney Magic will come your way :wizard:. One year you should get to WDW for Christmas and see the decorations. As much as I love the Gingerbread House at the GF, I think the Chocolate Carousel at the BC is spectacular also. I am excited the decorations will still be up when we go in a couple of weeks.

k&a&c'smom, how exciting that you and your daughter may be going to the BC this May! Trips with a daughter are so special

Time to go bake some cookies :santa:

I know I will get there, and it's all good. Trying a new resort is awesome. My DH wants Poly and I am a little guilty for picking somewhere else....I just can't give up LV BC for Poly GV :confused3 But you know how I change ;)

That said, I am SO GLAD to hear you are well. I think of you often my friend, and pray you are healthy.

2 WEEKS :goodvibes:cool1::cool1::cool1:

You MUST report back on Poly AND BC...never mind. You will have a great trip, ONLY tell me about BC so I don't switch again

Jungle Cruiser, I'll join Robert in encouraging you to try ToT! I thought I'd never step foot on ToT - I don't like enclosed spaces and I dislike regular elevators. But our boys encouraged me years ago, and now it's my favorite ride. :) Happy to hear about Robert in SL - we've really enjoyed getting to know some of the CL CMs at BC and BWI, so I appreciate hearing about similar experiences at GF.

mariamouse, thank you so much for sharing your experience - very helpful! How funny - our boys are exactly as you described yourself as a pre-teen - exclusively interested in the planning boards! We investigated the teen board recently and they immediately said it's not for them - they want to talk resorts, restaurants and park strategy. As a mom of young Disney planners, I can say that it can be challenging to accomodate all the different (and very strong) Disney opinions, but it's very fun to discuss!

pas130, I'll be following along to see if you get to GF in 2012 - bet you will!

k&a&c'smom, fun to hear about your developing plans for May! Still time for a May GF discount to appear, but your BC alternative sounds great, too!

We leave for the Grand in a couple hours. I'm so bummed we weren't able to get RPC (or even SL for that matter!)...My Mom is already there, and confirmed we have a connecting room with her-she is in Sago Cay-which looks like a nice location! I'm so excited!

Thanks Mariamouse for the great review! :thumbsup2
I'm happy you enjoyed MVMCP, I did have my doubts about spending the extra money for the tickets. Did you enjoy the cookies, hot chocolate and parade??
We are leaving for the GF in 2 days! I just started packing, did you wear shorts most of the time?
Thanks again!

My Mom and my brother and his family are there now-they said it's definitely shorts weather! :cool1:

Too funny! Given that they are so interested in planning (which is pretty rare for kids that age), I definitely think they would learn a lot from the DIS! :thumbsup2

We are huge Christmas fanatics, so MVMCP was perfect for us! I doubt you will regret the decision to purchase the tickets. The cookies were only so-so (pretty much just your typical sugar cookie) and the hot chocolate was basically the same as Swiss Miss, so nothing to rave about there. The parade, castle projection show and fireworks, however, were incredible! We felt that the marching soldiers in the parade alone were worth the price of admission. I also loved the Christmas music that they had playing throughout the park-- lots of classics (Ray Coniff, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, etc) versus a lot of the annoying teeny bop re-makes. You will have so much fun! :santa:

In regard to weather, I wore light pants/leggings, a short sleeve shirt, and sandals every day with a sweater for layering at night when it was cooler. You would definitely be fine wearing shorts in the middle of the day, but would probably get cold once the sun goes down. Since I did not want to have to bother changing, I found it was easier to just go with light pants. If you really want to wear shorts, though, you can get away with it!

I am so jealous that you are just getting ready to leave... have a blast! :woohoo:

Here's hoping for a BB! And a sitter, for a possible couples trip again (ours is graduating college) :goodvibes

Jungle Cruiser - I'm so very glad to hear your health is good, and it is normal life issues keeping you busy.

Thanks about the mother/daughter trip, we do it regularly, too. Great, isn't it?!

Two weeks to go, I'll bet you can't wait!:yay:

mariamouse - lol, you could be right, there are a lot of snowbirds!

I understand about the short stay, and not wanting to rock the boat. I'm as guilty as the next at not taking my own advice, though we have recently asked to move on a few trips. Our trip in August, we received a room in BPK that apparently should have been taken out of service - the a/c had issues. We didn't want to make a fuss, until our first morning, when I woke up with red, swollen eyes! They gladly moved us to Sago Cay.:thumbsup2

BTW, I giggled over your "sort of longwinded" comment about your teen DIS post to pixarmom earlier. I can relate.;)

tobin04 - I hope your travels were easy and uneventful, and you are enjoying the Grand! Sago Cay is a quiet location, I hope you have a magical time.

TIME2DISNEY - One more day, so exciting!:dance3:

pixarmom - I'm keeping my fingers crossed, we had a reservation for January but had to cancel due to DD's work schedule. Darn those jobs, anyway, horning in on our WDW obsession.

I'm so excited I just had to post this.:yay: In September we had booked a trip to the Poly in April. I just got off the phone with WDW Travel. I was able to get the latest 20% discount offer and as a result, we have changed from the Poly to the GF, in a theme park view room, no less. I never, ever, thought we would be able to afford that. This will be our first time at GF as well. How will I ever make it through the next 119 days??

Been awhile. It is beautiful in KC today with highs of upper 50's and pure sunshine. Made me think of the GF.

:welcome: How exciting, your first trip to the Grand! I know you will love the resort, and the TPV. Stick with us here in the FAQ, we'll try to help you through the next few months.:thumbsup2

KCmike - thanks for the photo! I am enjoying the warm weather here, too.:goodvibes

Wonderful picture KCMike. Not only is the scenery beautiful you managed to get the picture with essentially not people in it! It looks like it was taken at the end of the afternoon, does that seem right? In less than 2 weeks I will be on that walkway :cutie:

Glad to hear the weather is balmy in the middle of the country, hopefully it will make it's way east. It is only 23 degrees here now, and isn't going to get much warmer today
