Thanks for the great reviews Jungle Cruiser and Nicole786. I'm getting so excited and I have my rose colored glasses on! Strawberry soup! :cloud9:

Quick question. Am I remembering correctly that somebody posted that the construction team is not working on Sat/Sun? If so, I'm thinking maybe I should flip flop my CR and GF stays so that I am there when they aren't working. Also, I'm realizing that of all 4 resorts, I am looking forward to GF most. Saving the best for last would be a good thing! :cool1:

Better go check to see if availability is there to make the switch if I decide to pull the trigger.

Thanks GF lovers! :goodvibes

Welcome back Jungle Cruiser!!! I could see our room in your picture of Boca Chica!!

I too missed the beautiful walk to the Poly. While I'm glad the path is still open and they did a nice job with what they had to work with, it's just not the same:sad1:. I will admit, the first night I could hear the movies in our room and I was a tad nervous but after that we never ended up being home much before 10 anyway so it was okay.

Back from 10 glorious nights at the GF and have begun to catch up on life. I thought I would give a short trip report about our time at the GF.

Now, for what I hate to admit. The construction has changed the GF. The obvious is the view and the area at the waterfall pool. In addition, the wonderful walk from the GF to the Polynesian just isn't pretty anymore and we really missed the beach. That is to be expected, but there is something less tangible that both my DD and I felt. It was a less peaceful environment, something that has always appealed to us about the GF. The kids activities at the courtyard pool changes the feel there, as well as the movies at night. Everything seems a bit more closed in, and although not noisy, there is a heightened noise level. The feel of the resort is smaller and more crowded. It makes sense, the construction has essentially taken our a whole area of the resort. I am sure the DVC will be a beautiful building when it is done, however the view over to the Polynesian will never be the same and I think the resort will always feel more crowded. This probably won't bother new guests to the resort, however it is sad for us who have been faithful visitors to the resort over the years.

Jungle Cruiser, I am glad you posted it first. I was debating what to say. I know I already made a negative post because of them taking the $1500 out of my bank account erroneously (and then the way the situation was handled after the fact) and hesitated posting anything else negative, because I know this thread is our collective happy place. But I agree. my brief "review":

Our stay was phenomenal. I can truly say it was our best vacation, EVER, and my husband and parents agreed wholeheartedly. We were thrilled to be at the GF RPC and hope so much to be back again in a year or two. The lounge offerings were great and you can't beat the whole ambience. It is like nowhere else. We were so relaxed there and just enjoyed our trip so much.

With that said, I would be embarrassed to recommend the resort to anyone going for the first time, in its current state. The construction is ridiculous. The view from our room got progressively worse as our week went on as the structure was built higher and higher. There was constant loud noise during the day from the site and no peace to be had on our balcony (it was ok with the door closed but then again my kids are always loud so maybe they were masking it :lmao: ). The noise at the waterfall pool during the day was literally unbearable. They were jackhammering RIGHT next to the seating area. It was deafening. When the jack hammer would stop for a moment, you heard the constant shrill beeps of sometimes two or three vehicles backing up. I honestly cannot think of a worse pool situation. It was fine in the evenings but by day, horrible. The courtyard pool was pretty obnoxious with the kids' games in the afternoons and it was pretty crowded each time we went, to the extent that we had a fairly hard time finding chaises. And really, there is just no beach to be had. The sliver that is still there is just nothing once you are standing on it.

Dare I make one more comment? The RPC staff (3rd floor desk staff) were not only not great, they weren't even good. They were amazing before. We were so impressed two years ago. This time, it was none of the same people, and these people are totally not up to par. One guy, Jordan, was SO incredibly rude. A woman whose name I did not catch was also rude when I asked her if she could cancel a reservation for us because my parents were so sick they could not leave the room. Another woman told my husband she had no idea where the laundry was and was not going to even look into it initially. When he asked if she could find out, she came back and gave him the completely wrong floor. The other two people I dealt with were not overtly rude but never so much as smiled even once. And for no reason... each time I approached them with simple questions and I was so chipper and pleasant. It's not like I came to them to complain or anything (although I certainly could have! They held my $1500 hostage for an entire business week! But I never once complained to them about it!). This was just such a change from 2 years ago. :sad2:

I know these are some real negatives, but as I said, honestly, we did not let it ruin anything for us and we do plan to return. But as I said, I would be embarrassed to recommend it to any first timer in its present state.

Here are two more construction pics:

Both were taken from my balcony towards the end of my stay.

Bethclayton - thanks for the construction pics. Now I have. Bit better idea where things are happening.

Are the games at the courtyard pool new? I don't remember them happening when we were last there. Our last trip was the poly which had them and I detested it.

The games are at the courtyard pool now. They are over by the baby pool. They start at 1 PM and end sometime around 4:30.

I heart the mouse, I was the one that mentioned the construction crews do not work on the weekends. We were there 2 straight weekends and no one worked either of them. Additionally the do lower the big crane at night and it is not up on weekends.

Bethclayton, I am sorry to hear about the RPC CL staff. I have to say we had no issues with the CMs in SL. Some are friendlier than others, but everyone was helpful. As for your review, there is nothing wrong with giving your observations. I felt bad expressing my concerns but there is no way around the fact that the construction has affected the resort. People can take or leave our observations and make a decision if it matters to them or not.

Hi everyone :) I am looking forward to my first stay at the GF this summer. Initially we were just going to go with the standard garden view in an outer building, but now we are considering the Sugar Loaf Club Level rooms. My first question is about the food offerings, which is one of the major perks to us of CL. Are the afternoon tea offerings usually limited to just scones, tarts, and banana bread? If we did not stay CL we would probably venture over to the Garden View for their afternoon tea, where we've been before. Also, what kind of alcoholic beverages are offered? Is it just wine and beer? Are there mixed drinks/cocktails offered?

Thanks all :wave2:

EDIT: Just read the recent posts about the construction. I'd hate to have my first stay marred by construction! What areas does it affect? I read somewhere that the tennis courts will be demolished, and part of the beach in addition to part of the monorail are affected. Is the beach completely closed, or only a part of it? Any idea when it will be over? If I am to make the investment to treat my mother and myself to the GF, I wouldn't want our experience marred by construction... I'd rather wait until it was over to book it!

I have not stayed in SL, but in RPC, and I believe the offerings are the same (someone please correct me if I am wrong). Afternoon tea also included crudités, dips (ranch, spinach & artichoke, and tzatziki), bread, and breadsticks. There are no mixed drinks or cocktails, but they do serve an assortment of cordials during dessert from 8-10.

Almost the entire beach is closed. There is a small section still open. The monorail was fully operational during our stay last week. I think if you stayed in SL and did not plan to walk to the Poly or to use the beach pool, you would not really experience the construction, other than the extra people at the courtyard pool (and the games and movies held there). But, I do not think the construction will be over anytime soon. it is really just beginning. I am assuming it will be at least a year but I really have no idea.

They have had the games before but they were at the beach pool instead of the courtyard pool. We stayed at the Poly last year and yes, it is the same games (scavenger hunt, hula hoop contest, limbo, etc... fairly loud and accompanied by music... although I found the Poly's games and music to be at a louder volume than the GF's).

Thanks for the info Jungle Cruiser! :goodvibes

My rose colored glasses aren't so rosy today. I can't switch out my CR/GF reservations and still get the rooms I want.

I want to try the GF so badly, but I am very afraid my family will revolt on me if I skip our beloved Poly and then we run into noise/construction issues and a less then stellar RPC staff. :sad2:

DD is almost 1 1/2 so we have a very small window of time before we are forced into needing 2 rooms and I really wanted to get a feel for a lot of resorts before then. It's probably futile to hope that the construction will be completed in a time frame that will work for us :confused3

Anybody care to convince me it will be ok? My arm doesn't need twisting too much to just stick with the current plan. For once, I am happy with my reservations and do not want to change (RCers I know you are probably shocked to hear this :rotfl2:)

CoachBagFanatic - Very exciting, I am glad you were able to make the switch!:banana:

BCV23 - I do try so hard to remember there are many of you who have been longing for a GFV! I am happy for those of you who love the GF and will now have more opportunities to stay there.

I hope you are right, and when the construction is over the resort goes back to its usual calm and relaxing vibe.

bethclayton - Never worry about posting your true thoughts of your stays at the GF! We all need to hear the good and the bad.:thumbsup2

I'm very sorry to hear the RPC staff weren't their more usual friendly selves. I wonder what has made them so difficult? The laundry question has me stumped - why wouldn't they know it is on the 2nd floor, and if someone was new, why wouldn't he want to find out?!

Anyway, I'm glad your trip wasn't ruined from either the staff or the construction. It costs far too much for that to happen.

stefani_ - Welcome!:goodvibes Glad you've joined us!

Unfortunately, this coming year is going to be a very busy one at the GF, with the construction of the villas. Just no way around it, sorry to say. You may want to put off your visit until after the GFV is built, if you are worried about the noise and/or inconvenience.

As bethclayton posted, the afternoon tea in club level has various tea items, but it is not a full tea service like you would get at the Garden View Lounge. No little tea sandwiches or pastries. It is very good, though, and one plus - you can serve yourself as much Devonshire cream as you like! They always have scones, but usually vary the other items each day - we've seen trifle, tea cookies, and the quick breads you've mentioned.

Oh, and during the evening appetizer offerings, there is not only wine and beer but champagne!:goodvibes

i_heart_the_mouse - I wouldn't want to convince you to stay at the GF if it would upset your family when they encounter construction issues. I would point out the monorail shut downs will affect all monorail resorts - so even the Poly will have some effect.

If it were me, I would have to think long and hard about booking at the GF in its current state. On the other hand, if you are in RPC you will likely enjoy it, and have less impact from all the outside construction (except at the pool, no way around that!).

Good luck with your decision, it's a tough one.

Hello GF fans (including so many familiar "faces!")

I'm stopping by again as I start to focus on our multi-split stay (which includes GF) in February 2013. I was sidetracked by our YC/POFQ trip earlier this month, and may be sidetracked again if I use our APs for an extra visit this summer.

I started to wonder about February 2013 - it will be our first GF stay and I'm not sure about introducing the family to the GF during the construction. I was thinking it might be better to wait until GF is in tip-top shape! Sarah, I really appreciate your detailed report - that's really helpful in managing expectations. I'll be following along to see how the construction progresses, but a GF stay is definitely on our "to-do" list!

I am so sorry about the noise and rude staff :headache: I am at the point with the construction, for our May trip I am not even drawn to the MK area....thank you for the honest review...it is useful. Glad your vacation was wonderful nonetheless :cloud9:

Nicole, thanks for the explanation. Sounds delightful.

I hope the GFV doesn't change the GF as much as many of you fear. Personally we can't wait. :cool1: :cool1: The worries remind me a bit of our concern as frequent Polynesian guests when construction started on the GF. It did change the monorail, launches and the view of Seven Seas Lagoon forever but we've ended up loving the GF, too.
Being I have a humungous family (WDW wise-7 of us) I can't wait either :woohoo:
Ok I am super duper excited and I know we swore up and down that we wouldn't stay at the GF until the construction was done but we just couldn't stay away. Just switched our first 2 nights from CR TPV CL to GF RPC and then we head to BLT for the next 7. We are coming home again. :woohoo::dance3::dancer::dance3::woohoo:

We have already told ourselves that the construction is not going to bother us and we just can't wait to be home. OMG I feel like the next two months is going to take forever.
:yay: I have to say I'm a little surprised....if you go knowing what to expect, it should be great!!!!! Nice to see you back home here
Your take on the construction and overall feel of the resort is exactly what has worried me, too. I keep hoping it will go back to being the serene resort we love after the new building is finished, but I fear not. The only consolation is there are not many GFV rooms - I think it is 143 keys? Not positive about that, but at any rate, those guests will have to use the two pools, which means they will be more crowded.

pas130 & sjs314 - I'll keep my fingers crossed for that fall/winter discount.:goodvibes
HRH really wants the castle (RPC) but possibly SL would be better for summer. I hope it will go back to serenity...... Such a shame..:sad2:

Hopefully I can upload some pics later today!
:dance3: I love pics :yay:

I'm happy to hear over all your stay was nice and thank you for the pictures of the construction. I will be staying at the Grand in a couple months and I'm concerned about the state of things.

I have stayed in the royal palm club several times previously and always experienced amazing service from the concierge cast members. Jordan is actually a favorite of ours. I would describe him as chipper and pleasant in addition to always helpful. Ive usually seen him in the Sugar Loaf building, though. Knowing how good a cast member he is I cringe to see his name dragged around on a public forum.

Im curious if your spoke to management about the cast members? Maybe several of them were not royal palm club staff and were filling in? The concierge managers are also wonderful and care about their guests.

That is terrible about your money being held "hostage" for a week. I don't understand how that happened. Bad mistake. Could it be that there was just a delay in the refund due to it being a debit vs credit card account? Mine always takes 5 to 7 days to refund. So instead of being held "hostage" it was a case of mistaken identity and then it was set free ;) to wind up back in your account.

I hope to find familiar faces at the desks in a few months but even so I guess I've been lucky and always had stellar service. That's what keeps us coming back. :)

Happy trails, all

Jungle Cruiser, I am glad you posted it first. I was debating what to say. But I agree. my brief "review" ...

Because I know, from experience, that the Dis can be rather daunting when you're discussing something other than pixie dust, I just wanted to add my thanks for "bethclayton's" review. While I'm certainly not looking, or hoping for, negative, I think sharing the good AND the bad, and not just sugarcoating everything, is helpful to others to both temper expectations and make decisions.

I, too, wasn't wowed by the RPC staff (and had a similar billing issue as "bethclayton") during my September trip. Don't get me wrong: Everyone was unfailingly polite and my trip was neither ruined, nor did I ever get angry with anyone, or find anyone to single out for being surly or difficult--because no one ever was. (For myself, I'm more the kind to apologize, over and over, even for other people's mistakes, though I am persistent in trying to get things fixed in a "so, sorry to bother you again, I feel like a jerk even bringing it up again but such-and-such still didn't happen, could it be an oversight?" kind of way.) I just didn't find them super helpful. If I wanted to talk about pin trading or ask about their grandkids, I got genuine and happy conversations. If I needed them to do something which I thought should be well within their job definition (reservation cancellation, check out a movie, Disney Florist order, pickup event tickets, etc.), I always got the distinct impression I was putting them out, or being difficult, no matter how simple my request. And I was frequently given outright incorrect, or misleading information ... Not that I think it was ever done intentionally, just surprised it happened at all, especially at the "flagship" resort at the (supposed) highest level of service. (And my experience in 2010 at the Polynesian club level was even worse, in terms of getting inaccurate info.)

In the end, I found the service level absolutely acceptable, but definitely not outstanding, by any means. I ended up feeling like "bethclayton," actually. That I might actually return for the atmosphere, proximity, the sheer "Disney-ness", etc., since I know what to expect, but that I'd have a hard time recommending it to a friend, given what I experienced, and the price tag attached.

Champagne is the magic word! I really think I want to give it a try. I'm not worried at all about the monorail issues since we usually only use it resort hop midday. This time our whole trip is resort hopping so we probably will stay at our home resort for the most part of each stay. My family really is easy going but I want to plan the best for them. I think I'm projecting  I'm sticking with RPC (for now ;))

Seriously consider Sugarloaf  It's is lovely, no construction view.....and you can get your GF stay...hey it's 2 nights..give it a shot (before you need the 2rooms like me)

popcorn:: Hello my friend, I have RPC booked for next summer...but I am gonna wait, watch, etc....:goodvibes

I may consider switching to SL but I think if I'm gonna try it, I'm going all in! :woohoo: Honestly we aren't balcony people anyway so if I get a bad view it won't be the end of the world. I'm most worried about losing the beach pool to the noise factor. But who knows, maybe availability will open up and I can change the CR/GF dates.

Anyway, thanks for listening all. I know I'm a mess! All of the advice is super helpful!

Hello back!! I'm so glad pas responded to this, as I completely forgot. So sorry!

I don't blame you for thinking you may want to postpone a first GF stay, the old girl really isn't in top form right now!;) I would probably do as you suggest, and watch to see how things develop before making the final choice. We will look forward to you joining in when you can.:goodvibes

vanillagirl - Welcome!:cheer2: Glad you've joined us. Very exciting about your upcoming visit!

Nicole786 - thanks for the photos, what a pretty view!:cloud9:

i_heart_the_mouse - :rotfl: That was easy!;)

So excited for you. Both of best worlds and especially in that order. :cool1:

Thanks so much BCV23. We are definitely excited and can't wait.

CoachBagFanatic - Very exciting, I am glad you were able to make the switch!:banana:

Yes, very exciting. Oh we are happy that we were able to make the switch as well. Can't wait.

:yay: I have to say I'm a little surprised....if you go knowing what to expect, it should be great!!!!! Nice to see you back home here

You know pas, I was quite surprised myself when DH and I started talking about the GF and seeing our 2008 photos on his computer that we both said, let's switch from CR to GF. Hey it's only for two nights and we at least we get our GF fix until the construction is done.:cloud9: Hey I say bring on the construction. We won't let it impact our stay one bit. 60 days until RPC.:woohoo::yay:

DH and I have booked 6 nts in July for our 17 yr anniversary. We booked the "deluxe king" category in the main bldg, RPC.

We've done this once before and we got a turret room that had a view of the pools and even the MK in the far background. Our favorite part of the stay was being able to crack our door open and hear the live music in the lobby.

Now I have been reading this thread and am worried about construction. I know our category also includes rooms on the 2nd floor. If we get one of these, will we be affected by construction noise? Can you hear the lobby music from those 2nd floor rooms?

Does anyone have any input and advice on how the construction affects the deluxe King RPC rooms?

Thanks!

Thanks!

I just booked a deluxe king theme park view at the floridian also. These rooms are right above Gasparilla grill. Anyone have any noise issues from being right above it? Have fun Tigger. Please post lots of pics.:yay:
