Cast of characters--DH and me (both 25). DH's first trip, my 3rd.
Dates of trip--Dec. 31-Jan. 7, 2001
I didn't have any formal plans for Friday and Saturday except a DIS meet at Tony's on Saturday. We decided just to take in what we had missed.
This whole time the MK had been the most crowded, and we still had things we needed to do there. So on Friday morning, we headed back there. We were able to do some of the older rides, like TTA and CoP. I was afraid that DH wouldn't like those, but they ended up being his favorites. That's when I knew that I had converted him. We'll definitely be taking many more trips in the future.
We took a break from the MK on Friday and had lunch at Kona Cafe. We split an order of sticky wings and hamburger. The wings were really good. We also caught a bus out to the WL because I had never seen it before. We saw a bird dive in the water and come out swallowing a big fish while we were waiting for the boat at WL. After that, he sat out on the dock to dry himself off and actually let people pet him. That was neat.
In the evening we headed back to Downtown Disney. I had a few purchases I wanted to make, and we wanted to catch the first show at the Comedy Warehouse. I was really glad we did that. Neither DH nor I are nightclub kind of people, but the Adventurer's Club and Comedy Warehouse were highlights of our trip.
Our initial plan for Saturday was to check out of PO and get some cheap motel in Orlando since our tickets didn't expire until midnight that night. (Remember it was DH's first trip. I was trying to do it as cheaply as possible since he didn't understand what all the fuss was about before we left.) However, after a few days at PO, DH declared that he didn't want to leave Disney property if he didn't have to. That's my kind of man.
We called the front desk to try to extend our stay, but the Marathon was on Sunday, and the runners had taken all of the cheapest rooms on property. I then called CRO. I told her I wanted a room for 2 adults for one night. What did she do? She tried to get me a 2 bedroom treehouse! I told her that wasn't going to happen, so after a few very expensive concierge suites, she finally admits there is a king bed room in the garden wing at the Contemporary. That's what I'm talking about. We booked that.
So on Saturday, we slept in until about 9:00 and moved our stuff out of the room. Since we had our own car and we were able to park close to our room at PO, we decided just to move our own stuff. We had breakfast at Dixie Landings on our way out (the first breakfast of the trip) and then checked in at the Contemporary. Our room wasn't ready, so we took the key and walked to the MK.
We caught a few more rides at the MK, including 2 trips on the TTA. DH just couldn't get enough of it. I also caught him singing the theme from the CoP! We went to Tom Sawyer's Island since I had never gone there, but I didn't like it much. The caves made me claustophobic. I never imagined that Disney would make something that dark and cramped with no exit signs!
At 3:00 it was time for the DIS meet at Tony's. Janet (a.k.a. Mikamouse) had arranged it, and a bunch of people had signed up, but in the end, it was Janet and her family, Quentin Disney, and DH and I. Mika's family was so nice! DH and I were afraid at first that it would be wierd since there were 7 of them and only the 3 "outsiders", but they were so friendly we really enjoyed ourselves. We enjoyed meeting Quentin, too. It was his and Mika's daughter's birthday, so Mika ordered a huge, delicious birthday cake.
By the time we were done there, DH and I were wiped out. DH has a desk job and doesn't do much walking, so this week had completely worn him out. I think he was also going into withdrawl from being away from his computer.
My knee felt a little better, but I was always glad to sit down, so we went back to the Contemporary to vegetate. Our room was in the South wing on the first floor. It was a wonderful room, and we could walk out from our patio to the car, so we just brought stuff in as we needed it. We took turns playing on the lap top and checking our email, had lunch at the Food 'N Fun center, and turned in early for the long trip home the next morning.
All in all, it was a great trip. It would have been nice if it were 10 or 20 degrees warmer, but we were fine. At least we had known it would be cold and packed warmly. I wish I hadn't hurt my knee, but I'm not sure DH would have been able to keep up with me if I hadn't. Before we came home we were planning our next trip. DH has brothers and a sister who are 7, 6, and 4, so we're taking them and their mom in our pop-up to FW this Novemeber. It was fun with just us, but it will be even more exciting with kids.
