Is anyone on the Dream right now? How did a girl fall overboard?

I just watched a video of - walk around of deck 4. Someone on Reddit- which isn't reliable- said she fell through one of the port holes there. I watched the video and those do seem to be a bit less protected than the railings. Still would have probably needed to have been lifted up by the adult- but I could see that happening. I am sure Disney legal is all over it...
Port holes?

They are going in and out of the tunnel. But the railings are just as high and there is plexiglass. If you WANT to jump off the ship, you certainly can. But seriously, you can’t FALL off the ship. Unless you are doing something stupid.

These ones on the fantasy don't have plexi glass. I agree with you that something sketchy still going on- but I would consider these a little less safe.

There are some comments on the Reddit thread from people who are saying they’re on the ship and heard from crew that the man is not the girl’s father but is a professional diver.

Also one comment saying the person heard from a waiter that the girl had been climbing on some sort of ladder and fell off. (No idea where one would have been or why her parents/guardians wouldn’t have put a stop to it, if so.)

Either way, I imagine we won’t know for sure until/unless Disney or the girl’s family make some sort of official statement. But I do agree that the Disney rescuers are to be commended, and I’m glad it was a good outcome for the man and the girl.
That makes more sense bc crew were holding daughter- not the man who dove in- if I dove in after my child- no way I wouldn't be holding her close!!!

I said this above, but, to repeat...

My guess is the crew was essentially acting as CPS in this case. Security would have been checking the videos as the rescue operation was going down. If they saw definitively that the father put her on the rail, that is endangerment and their duty besides rescuing them would be to protect the child. They don't know the intentions of the father. It would be very similar if a child went into the ER with a questionable injury where CPS would be called to investigate. The parents would be separated from the child. Since there is only one rescue boat, they couldn't put him in another, so this was the next best thing.

I'm more shocked they neither one of them is in a neck brace and that they're not laying down. I'd think there'd be the possibility of a spinal injury and not stabilizing that would risk further injury.

As a teen, I’ve jumped from a 10 m platform. I went feet first and if you didn’t know what you’re doing that impact could really hurt you. I recall the first time I did it. I felt like my hair was being ripped off my head. And another thought that’s been giving me chills all day is that once you hit the water you were underwater for a seemingly never-ending amount of time. That was something you had to mentally prepare for, but you were in a pool and you knew you would come back up.

We usually sit by the Oh no and Oh yeah slides at Volcano Bay mostly just to watch how many people say they can swim but can't. Those are only a 4ft or 6ft drop and we usually see at least 2 people being rescued every hour.

It's so crazy that he was able to find her and tread water for 20 minutes holding her and while in clothes that had to be adding weight.

Reddit is a cesspool of hatred many times ( like many social media places ) and I try to avoid it.

Anyways, IF the story about putting a child on the guard rail is true, yes it was incredibly stupid, but let's not act like the father isn't devastated about it and knows how dumb it was, and how it will scar him and her for life. A mistake was big, while a big one, doesn't make someone a horrible person who needs " charges brought against them " like everyone on that reddit page is screaming. A father jumping off a ship to safe his daughter's life shows the type of father he is.

Again though, we truly don't know the full story, and I am curious if Disney will even release that information.

It's called Reckless Endangerment. "conduct that creates a substantial risk of serious physical injury or death to another person, even if the person engaging in the conduct didn't intend to cause harm."

So even if he didn't mean for her to fall off, putting her on the railing did create substantial risk of serious physical injury or death to another person.

Definitely a chargeable offense.

A couple of things. The ships do have a camera system that informs the bridge if someone goes over, since the quick response. In addition, many of the life rings have an EPIRB attached to them which is a GPS locating device that activates when it hits water. That could also be how they found them quickly. Lastly, this ship was likely in international waters and I doubt US laws govern the conduct of the father if he put her on top of the railing.

Very interesting about the GPS on life rings! It makes sense though!

Disney also had no way to identify the relationship before saving them. They were also probably concerned about core body temps and keeping them safe on the rescue boat.

There is video of the rescue out there now. You can see the man putting his arm across and on the girl to comfort her for most of the boat ride back to the ship. They may have asked him to sit on that side to balance things, or he was so exhausted and in shock he just let the crew take care of her, but he is clearly comforting her. I think the news reports that it was her farther are accurate.

Edit: See my correction below.
