The MOST important question about what's taught in school.....Square Dancing!

I remember being in middle school in the early 90's in Orlando and having to learn Square Dancing!

I also remember no one liked it. Funny enough, I was also watching the amazing TV show "The Wonder Years" which also mentioned Square Dancing being taught in their school and Kevin Arnold's reaction to it was hilarious....something about it being important if they ever got stuck in the Ozarks.

Is this still taught in schools?

Elementary school in the mid-70's in rural northern Alberta. It was a module of our P.E. curriculum for a number of years. My DS had a dance module during his elementary years also, which would have been in the mid-2000's but I don't remember if it was square dancing. I kind of doubt it.

I grew up in Orlando too (went to middle school in the early/mid-2000’s) but did not ever learn square dancing that I recall. In middle school I didn’t do any dancing, but I never took PE. In 5th grade we were taught some line dances like the Cha Cha Slide, but not square dancing.

Not sure if my kids did. Maybe in elementary school.

By high school, marching band and soccer counted for the required pe credit for my kids.

I'm a Texan and we learned it in elementary school back in the day. I think it's fun and in general wish people did more partner & group dancing in this day and age.

We did it in junior high in the early 80's and I loved it, I think it's fun! I would totally do it now too but no way would my DH.

I just asked my kids who graduated in 2014 & 2016 and they never learned square dancing in gym :-(

northern california-square dancing in elementary school early 70's.

my kids, eastern washington w/in the last 9 years-i think the only dance was in high school p.e. and that was using 'dance dance revolution' on the wii.

We had it after school, strictly voluntary, in 5th and 6th grades back in the late 1960’s. I always thought it was just a passion of one of the teachers, but am not sure about that, maybe it was a school program. She was a teacher in my elementary school, and that was the only place it was offered so kids from the other elementary schools had to come to our gym. There were always a lot of kids, so I guess it was something enjoyed by many. Of course we didn’t have anywhere near the amount of options kids have today in sports and other activities at those ages.

Elementary school in the 70s we had square dancing in gym. There was also some sort of citywide gym show and square dances were included.

Elementary and Jr. High so late 70s, early 80s in NV. I also remember having to learn The Hustle. DH remembers square dancing as well. Don’t think it’s something my kids had to do. I’m sure I would have heard about it if they had.

We had square dancing in elementary school every year in the early 70's. My gym teacher was even on a local TV show as a square dance caller.

My kids (ages 17, 15, 12) all know the dance moves to Cotton Eyed Joe thanks to elementary school gym class in our district. Not square dancing, but an equally useful life skill.

My oldest learned square dancing in middle school PE - that was about 5 years ago. Thankfully I never had to do that as a student, nor do I teach it now in elementary.
