The Most Expensive Free Trip Ever - TR Link is Up! Pg. 164

Finally settled on our trip for this year. We will be going from the Wednesday after Christmas until the Monday after New Years. Tried for a couple value studios at Jambo, but they were all booked up, so we ended up with two standard studios in Kidani! Now I just have to count the days so I can start the countdown!!!:confused3

Now THAT is the best pinewood derby car EVER.

Clever title you have there.....I imagine sushi is fast food since it doesn't need to be cooked.

That's awesome! It'd be great to go over New Year's. Keep us posted.

Marlene thanks you Cherie. You know I pride myself on my chapter titles.

Thanks Marvin. It's really an exercise to get kids and dads to work together and spend time together and come away with something they can all be proud of. Everyone wins, but it doesn't always feel that way at trophy-time.

Yeah, that is the point I tried to make with my boys. I wanted them to have the experience of building their own car and competing with it. Unfortunately, there are too many Dad's who think it is a parent competition instead of an opportunity to spend time and teach/work with their sons. At that age, though, it is hard to teach a life lesson to the boys when they aren't standing there getting rewarded for their effort.

Thinking about a PTR to help me pass the time, but after this new standard you have set, the bar may be set too high.:sad2: Not sure I could lure away any of the glennbo groupies long enough to have any readership. :worship:

Exactly. Used to make me so angry when I saw some of the cars.

Yippee. Now that our trip is scheduled:banana:, I got to count the number of days until we leave. OMG, it is 296 days we have to wait to head "home" again to Kidani!:scared1: I think I'm gonna have to join a support group to help me get through........:sad2:

That is what use to happen when our church had those races.

Oh gimme a break! You should start one. Don't make us chant!

Exactly. Used to make me so angry when I saw some of the cars.

It's tough to know where to draw the line sometimes. Obviously I was involved in building them. I don't let them use the power tools except for sanders and the dremel...I want them to get to adulthood with all of their fingers attached. A few years ago I bought an adapter-thingee that you put onto the spray paint cans so they can just pull a trigger to spray it. Holding the can and pressing the button with their index finger is too hard for their small hands. But anyway, I had a rule where they were at least present for everything if not actually doing it. Design is all them. If anything, I try to tone them down at that point because they come up with some really difficult ideas.

I think you just described the people who cruise the PTR forum. ;)

You "ninja posted" while I was replying to those others.

It can be tough. James is convinced that other people are using oil on their axles (illegal -- only dry lubricants like graphite are allowed) for speed. I don't know.

I just realized that today we hit double-digits in our countdown to the "most expense free trip ever"!

Who's with me?

smiley.gif

darn it you hit double digits that must mean i have sailed past my double digits.

:headache:

the speed tricks they use is hollow out the inside of the car on the front end and load it with ball bearings or something heavy, but that would be cheating and cheating is wrong in church competition it is really wrong.:)

Yup. You must have.

I didn't see anything in the rules about that, so it wouldn't be cheating!

Wait, are you talking about placement or just plain old overloading the weight? They do have to be 5 oz. or less. That is in the rules!

Hey Glenn! Late congrats on the double digits :cool1:

It's so hard when one kid wins an award and the other doesn't. I bet it probably meant more to James, too. I love Marlene's sushi car idea. We did a pinewood derby (although being for girl scouts, they called it a "powderpuff derby") a couple years ago. Scott had a lot of fun building the car with Jenna - but both of us were amazed at the complexity of some of the cars at the competition. It was obvious that the parents had done most or all of the work for some of them. I'm not sure what lesson those kids would take away from it - but I'm sure its not what the Girl Scout organization has intended.

im talking about if you would hallow out the bottom of the car in the front and the back, and hav about 70% of the car weight in the front and the otehr 30% in the back you should get more speed on the hill and carry it through on the straight away.

just have to make sure it is not too heavy i the front do drag it down after the hill.

Thanks Rebecca. I like the "powderpuff derby" name.

You caught that, did ya'........:rolleyes1

Yep.

Okay, weight distribution. All I know is, it sounds to me like Parker better clear some shelf space for some trophies.

Wow! Every time I blink this PTR grows another 6 pages or more :goodvibes Great job glennbo123! I promise I'll check your PTR more often :)

Congratulations on the double digits! :yay: Almost there!

I loved your last update. Those cars are awesome, Marlene's is so original and Jame's ultra cool. Too bad he didn't get a trophy, but hey! There's always next year... besides the funniest part must be building the car, isn't it?

P.S.
And yes I'll never forget the keyboard protectors.
