how's this....

Well.. isn't this the popular party place these days??!! Sorry, I"m late to the party- but the Belle Battalion wishes you a tardy but hearty :dance3:!

Only 99 more days of waiting! How cool is that??!!

Yes, a country our size has no business being one time zone; it's taken a stupid cue from it's even larger neighbor. Go figure... :confused3 Daylight savings- nope, don't do that either.

Although, I have to say, makes for phone calling my son at night easier. No guessing on if it's too late or not.

Glenn, congrats on hitting double digits!:banana::banana::banana::banana:

I hit double digits too :thumbsup2 ........only I hit it so hard, it turned into triple digits! :sad2::sad1::sad2::sad1::sad2:

I feel your pain. Only 90 days to go until I hit double digits. May as well be a thousand years... :sad2::sad1:

Winkers, you outdid yourself! :lmao:

Glenn, I was totally hoping for a trek emoticon! Doing the happy dance for u anyway.

Thanks! You still made it in on day 99 by over half an hour. :)

One time zone huh? That's interesting.

Don't hit so hard! You're going to enjoy it, going around the holidays though.

Thanks dude.

Here's an update on the pinewood derby held today for the Christian Service Brigade and Pioneer Girls at our church. As I mentioned in a previous post, James and Marlene each made cars for the races, but Lauren decided not to this year although she does go to Pioneer Girls.

Anyway, we'd been working on the cars for a few weeks and turn-in was this past Wednesday. I took some pictures of the cars before we turned them in because they can sometimes get a little banged-up during the races.

James wanted to make his look something like a Lambourghini. We actually had to glue some additional wood to the top before cutting it out and we made some fender pieces to go over the back wheels. Originally, the block of wood as we received it was completely cut out at the back wheels, similar to how the front wheels are in the picture below.

James' car.

Now Marlene, on the other hand, always has to do something "unique". Last year she made a Nutter Butter cookie and won Best of Show. The year before that she made the hippie van from "Cars". And the year before that she made a dog bone.

This year she couldn't decide for quite a while, then she had an idea ....sushi! At first, I was like, "what?!" But then I thought, "oooo, that has possibilities."

Well, here's how Marlene's sushi turned out.

IMG_2236.jpg

IMG_2237.jpg

It's the original block of wood, cut flat across to be a serving plate. Then, a dowel rod cut to be the pieces of sushi. These were all her ideas. I may have had the idea to add some wasabi (wood putty), and she chimed in with ginger (some wood from the dowel and some shavings). We also made the chopsticks from some cherry left over from other projects. And finally, the tops of the sushi are wood putty for the fish and veggies (avocado or cucumber) and minute rice painted white for the rice. I did the cutting and she did all of the sanding and staining and painting.

Here's the competition.

IMG_2238.jpg

And the track.

IMG_2239.jpg

It's all computer-timed and they make a cool setup where there's a camera on the finish line and projected above.

IMG_2240.jpg

Oh, I made the flagpole stand in the picture above, on the stage. It's pretty slick, it separates into two pieces for easy storage!

Now I have to say, they outdid themselves this year technology-wise. We have a new fellowship hall this year, adjacent to the room in the picture above, which is our sanctuary/gym/everything-room.

Here's the fellowship hall. Notice the image projected on the wall.

IMG_2243.jpg

It's another shot of the finish line using Skype and the current status of the race heats. :faint: People can sit in here and have coffee and muffins and keep track of the races! Suh-weet!

IMG_2241.jpg

The trophy table. Hmmmm. Any in our future?

IMG_2249.jpg

I won't bore you with too many racing pictures, but....

Here's one of James, winning a heat.

IMG_2253.jpg

And the flying sushi.

IMG_2258.jpg

And another of James' car winning by the narrowest of margins. Phelps-like.

IMG_2259.jpg

Here's a photo of some of the competition I liked. The cat one on the left was great -- it has its arms around a mouse. The sled next to it was really, really nice -- one of my favorites. Also, the ice cream sundae was a big hit.

Races done, time for awards.

James was in the Boys bracket, lots of competition. He had a fast car, but didn't win.

Marlene was in the Youth bracket, based on her age, and won for fastest car. We were very surprised because we've never won for speed. I don't know the tricks that some of these people do to get their cars so fast.

IMG_2260.jpg

Then, they gave awards for Best of Show, which is for car design. Marlene won a trophy for that too.

IMG_2261.jpg

Yeah, she's been having a good week. First she won a basket full of gift-cards at her school's fund-raiser on Thursday night, and then she cleaned-up at the pinewood derby today.

Here she is with a friend of hers.

IMG_2265.jpg

James was a little disappointed, :sad1: and didn't want me to take a picture of him with his car. It's a tough life-lesson -- his car was about as fast as Marlene's, but in a tougher group.

The sushi car is awesome! Very creative. :thumbsup2 Who knew a sushi car would be the fastest? Wow. Poor James. :( We did Scouts for a couple of years and Pinewood Derby twice, but never won.

My little brother did the pineword derby growing up. I remember taping quarters to his to make it heavy enough...oh good times!

Love the sushi idea, so creative! And James' car looks very sleek.

that is the BEST PWD car I have ever seen! I love that Marlene came up with it all on her own.

It's fun to see the girls take on it.

PWD is hard on those little ego's...Eric had a rough year this year (it's called no teflon on the wheels) but it sure LOOKED good!

Oh yes, Pinewood Derby with Cub Scouts. You try really hard to prepare them for being good sports if they don't win, and we always made the boys do at least MOST of the work on their cars (although many parents don't) and take pride that it was truly THEIR car, but they still always believe they will win, and never take it very well when they don't.

Tell James we are all very proud of him for working hard and giving it his best.:thumbsup2 :cheer2: :car:

That was a really awesome post!! See? Who says you're in the PTR Doldrums?!

Sushimobile was INCREDIBLE!! And I think James' car was super cool too. Tough break for him, poor kid. But like you say, a great life lesson. As much as we'd like to, we'd love to win them all.

Fun stuff PWD!!

Okay, your title for this post was so clever! :thumbsup2

I love the sushi mobile-thumbs up for that as well. :thumbsup2 Great...now I'm hungry for sushi! :rotfl:

It is amazing to see how few posts it needs in this thread to go from daylight savings time to tummy tucks!! :goodvibes

And just to clarify things: I meant to add this similey ;) into my post about time zones, of course there is sense in longitudinally endowed countries to have different time zones. :goodvibes

Congratulations on the fast sushi! Both cars look really great!! :thumbsup2 What a fun project.

This post is so fitting as I just watched a South Park episode with these kind of races in it. Have you seen that one where Stan's dad modifies his car with this warp speed drive orb to make his car go super fast? :lmao:

Marlene's car is awesome! Really creative. Poor James. His car was still super cool though :cool2:

Thank you. My older daughter was surprised it was fast, not being very aerodynamic. But speed in pinewood derby is more about weight (being as close to the allowable limit without goin over) and friction (or lack thereof). It's difficult to get a really fast car.

Yep. Actually we drilled holes in the sushi to hold coins if we needed extra weight. It turned out it was pretty close, so there was only 1 penny glued inside of each one of those sushi. Now you know. ;)

And I forgot to add - very clever title for this installment. :thumbsup2

Thanks! As you know, titles can be tough for me.

Thank you, and Marlene thanks you. The girls definitely have a different take on this project. The boys mostly go after race cars, trucks, and tanks. I think we owe this idea of going after something unique to a friend of Lauren's who made a "sneaker" car a few years ago. It looked just like a sneaker, with shoelaces and everything. She's actually the older sister of the girl who made the sled car that I pointed out in the post. I didn't know yesterday who made that sled car. Now it makes sense. Anyway, after that sneaker car, my girls have always tried to do something unusual too.

Thanks Marvin. It's really an exercise to get kids and dads to work together and spend time together and come away with something they can all be proud of. Everyone wins, but it doesn't always feel that way at trophy-time.

Fun stuff PWD!!

Thanks Liesa. It is important to learn that you won't always win.

Okay, your title for this post was so clever! :thumbsup2

Thanks tingurl! Go have some sushi today; I encourage it. Don't you love the names for different sushi concoctions they make? Like Hairy Caterpillars and such?

Yes, we can get into some very different and interesting topics! Thank you for being the inspiration for my new phrase!

I must confess I don't watch South Park. :guilty: Just not enough hours in the day. Sounds like a good episode though.

Thanks!

What a creative kid!!

Yes.....thanks!
