Here's an update on the pinewood derby held today for the Christian Service Brigade and Pioneer Girls at our church. As I mentioned in a previous post, James and Marlene each made cars for the races, but Lauren decided not to this year although she does go to Pioneer Girls.
Anyway, we'd been working on the cars for a few weeks and turn-in was this past Wednesday. I took some pictures of the cars before we turned them in because they can sometimes get a little banged-up during the races.
James wanted to make his look something like a Lambourghini. We actually had to glue some additional wood to the top before cutting it out and we made some fender pieces to go over the back wheels. Originally, the block of wood as we received it was completely cut out at the back wheels, similar to how the front wheels are in the picture below.
James' car.
Now Marlene, on the other hand, always has to do something "unique". Last year she made a Nutter Butter cookie and won Best of Show. The year before that she made the hippie van from "Cars". And the year before that she made a dog bone.
This year she couldn't decide for quite a while, then she had an idea

....sushi! At first, I was like, "what?!" But then I thought, "oooo, that has possibilities."
Well, here's how Marlene's sushi turned out.
It's the original block of wood, cut flat across to be a serving plate. Then, a dowel rod cut to be the pieces of sushi. These were all her ideas. I may have had the idea to add some wasabi (wood putty), and she chimed in with ginger (some wood from the dowel and some shavings). We also made the chopsticks from some cherry left over from other projects. And finally, the tops of the sushi are wood putty for the fish and veggies (avocado or cucumber) and minute rice painted white for the rice. I did the cutting and she did all of the sanding and staining and painting.
Here's the competition.
And the track.
It's all computer-timed and they make a cool setup where there's a camera on the finish line and projected above.
Oh, I made the flagpole stand in the picture above, on the stage. It's pretty slick, it separates into two pieces for easy storage!
Now I have to say, they outdid themselves this year technology-wise. We have a new fellowship hall this year, adjacent to the room in the picture above, which is our sanctuary/gym/everything-room.
Here's the fellowship hall. Notice the image projected on the wall.
It's another shot of the finish line using Skype and the current status of the race heats.

People can sit in here and have coffee and muffins and keep track of the races! Suh-weet!
The trophy table. Hmmmm. Any in our future?
I won't bore you with too many racing pictures, but....
Here's one of James, winning a heat.
And the flying sushi.
And another of James' car winning by the narrowest of margins. Phelps-like.
Here's a photo of some of the competition I liked. The cat one on the left was great -- it has its arms around a mouse. The sled next to it was really, really nice -- one of my favorites. Also, the ice cream sundae was a big hit.
Races done, time for awards.
James was in the Boys bracket, lots of competition. He had a fast car, but didn't win.
Marlene was in the Youth bracket, based on her age, and won for fastest car. We were very surprised because we've never won for speed. I don't know the tricks that some of these people do to get their cars so fast.
Then, they gave awards for Best of Show, which is for car design. Marlene won a trophy for that too.
Yeah, she's been having a good week. First she won a basket full of gift-cards at her school's fund-raiser on Thursday night, and then she cleaned-up at the pinewood derby today.
Here she is with a friend of hers.
James was a little disappointed,

and didn't want me to take a picture of him with his car. It's a tough life-lesson -- his car was about as fast as Marlene's, but in a tougher group.
