The Moist Exhausting Free Trip Ever - Link to Part II Thread pg. 244

Doesn't getting the staff engaged in your experience make it so much richer?? Totally true at WDW, and seemingly so here too!!

Lovely update with all the stories and personal interaction you had with hte owners! Looks like they truly enjoy serving their customers.

MMMm...apflestrudel. Yum!! I was too stuffed to try dessert at Biergarten.

:cloud9: Looks like a fantastic place! The menu looks fantastic, there are some real authentic dishes on it (with some Americanized things as well like the chicken schnitzel, but that's ok! ;)). But why didn't you get the "Polsterzipf" for dessert??? I have no idea what it is, but the name is very funny, it means "cushion corner". :goodvibes

I would say 4 Judys:

first pictures, then part of her head in second picture (the one all the way to right because she is the only one with curly hair in your family), then fourth pic (obviously) and finally with the soup.

Great update. That restaurant looks like a hoot and the food looks delicious. Sorry everyone had the stomach flu for Christmas (happened to all my brother's kids too), but I am glad you were able to enjoy your meal. That was so fun! Great side update!

Hey, did you notice the Seinfeld reference I threw in there for you during the bat segment of the Maharajah Jungle Trek chapter?
Err...no. But I went back and found it!
I'm so ashamed.

The owners son walked by and I said, “Excuse me, where’s the coffee?” He said, “It’s cleverly hidden in the urn sir.”
I like this place already.

While we waited, we noticed small signs on the tables that listed several choices that you had if you couldn’t finish your meal. I didn’t think to take a picture of it, but some were “wash dishes with ‘scrubby bubbles’”, “be beaten with a large wooden stick, according to Austrian culinary law”, and “be charged more and served less on your next visit”.
Still liking this place.

My weinerschnitzel.
Hey hey hey! This is a family board!
However, it is most impressive. Takes up half the plate!

My weinerschnitzel was good.
Dude! Enough of the dirty talk! Children read these threads!
However, that is good to know.

The potato salad was kind of tangy, different than I’m used to, but good.
Bavarian-style potato salad is awesome, isn't it? :lovestruc

Around 1 o’clock the restaurant began to clear out and Herwig came over to talk to us. He told me, “You don’t have to eat your greens. They’re for girls!”
Don't tell Patrick that.

He said he is from the same part of Austria as Arnold Schwarzenegger and I told him I noticed the resemblance.
No way. Herwig is MUCH hotter.

This got him talking about dogs because in Austria people bring dogs into restaurants. If somebody does that here, he can seat them at a sidewalk table and not violate any board of health rules.
Personally, I'm pretty happy with America's law on that one.

Recently, late at night, he heard some pounding upstairs and he went up to complain. There were 6 Chinese students there, and they were pounding meat on a cutting board. He said, “Oh, you’re cooking. That’s okay then.”
My kind of guy.

Then his son delivered the apfelstrudel and he was like, “Here you go…whoa! Wait a minute! You can’t have it until you’ve finished.” He left to get something and I figured a photo opportunity was coming, so I handed the camera over to Marlene because I knew I was soon going to be hassled.
Man, I am really loving this restaurant.

I took one last picture of Bernd as we left.
And what a fine one it was.

He was complaining about the “tourists” because as we were leaving another family came in that had seen them on ESPN and the guy was taking a picture of their menu board.
I know...can you imagine? Taking pictures of menus and food? Pfffffft. Tourists.

We really enjoyed our meal here, despite our still-recovering stomachs. It was a lot of fun, and the food was good. Definitely, the best way to describe it for you folks is: 50’s Prime Time meets Biergarten.
I am SO driving to Pennsylvania now. Speaking of which, I'll be heading to York in February for work. You guys live around there?

Hehehe I love the reference to The Big Lebowski on the menu board. One of my favorite movies, especially from the Coen Brothers. I just saw True Grit and loved it!

Looks like you found a little gem of a restaurant. The staff seem very friendly and outgoing to their customers (and tourists alike ;) ) Too bad everyone was not feeling up to a full meal. What a great experience! Thanks for sharing.

OMG, you're killing me - I loooove Austrian food! What a fun experience; who knew you could get such entertainment outside of The World?!

Restaraunt sounds good. And if my eyes don't mistake me, that's the Dude, of Big Lebowski fame, in the center of the board, is it not? :rotfl: I'll have to keep the place in mind should I ever find myself in State College, PA, which I probably won't, but hey, why not? Does make me look forward to our upcoming trip and our obligatory stop at Biergarten, though.:thumbsup2

Why yes, that is the Dude, of Big Lebowski fame! Good eye Tina!

Unfortunately, State College isn't near anything else, so it's not a place you could swing-by when visiting something else. But we were traveling across the state so were able to stop there.

What a fun sounding place you discovered! I see lots more pig statues on their counter...,I assume they collect them?

It appears so. I guess 'cause the motto on their menu says "Where bacon is an herb!"

What is weinerschnitzel? I guess I always assumed it was a hot dog-ish / sausage like thing....but yours was something flat :confused3. Is it more like a chicken fried steak kinda thing? :upsidedow. Whatever it is....it looks good Can you tell that we skipped our biergarten reservations (but don't tell anybody...that's a spoiler for my tr) ;)

No, it's not a hot dog. I guess you might think that because of Oscar Meyer weiners. But Wein is the Austrian spelling of Vienna, and a schnitzel is a breaded veal cutlet....so weiner schnitzel is a breaded veal cutlet, cooked in the Viennese style.

And shame on you for skipping your Biergarten reservation! ;)

Two Judy's. And yum that apple strudel looks good!

Good job being the first guesser, but I think others will find more "pieces"...so, sorry -- I can't declare you the winner of this round. :sad1:

Sorry to hear that you were sick. I had a stomach virus about 6 weeks ago and it sure wasn't fun.

Seems like you found a good restaurant and met some characters. Did they ask why you were taking pics?

Thanks, we're doing much better now. It was a great restaurant. They didn't ask why I was taking pictures...but did comment loudly on "the tourists", in a fun way.

Three Judy's. Almost four, but in the one shot it's just her chair, I don't think you can see any of her.

Hmmm, you should have been more sure of yourself.

Sounds like a fun stop. It looks Marlene was bareyl able to stomach even looking at food.  I hope she is feeling better.:goodvibes

You're right -- both she and Judy liked the soup a lot, but couldn't eat much. Judy finished hers the next day, but Marlene didn't want to eat hers because it reminded her of how she felt. Yes, she's better now.

3 Judy's and 1 sneaky James in the 3rd picture. :goodvibes

Getting harrassed by the pig.:rotfl2:

Good catch on the sneaky James. Sorry, 3 Judy's is 1 short. Nuts.

Oooh, the food looks SO GOOD! So so good! I bet everyone was so glad you stopped despite your stomachs, and what a perfect meal to eat for the first time in days.

Yes, everyone had a good time and were glad to stop there. Although there's a Korean restaurant that we really like that's right down the street from my niece's apartment. So now we have a couple of places to choose from there...too bad we only pass through 1 or 2 times a year.

I'm with ya on the Apple Strudel, I wasn't a fan of Biergartens either, the cheesecake there though...

Yep, the cheesecake was awesome. Apple strudel, not so much. They need to work on that -- that is NOT the way it should be.

What a fun surprise for you! I love the "50's Prime Time meets Biergarten" description!:goodvibes

I thought of it  as I was doing the writeup :surfweb: and I told my family :grouphug: . I got several thumbs-up :thumbsup2 and head nods ::yes:: .

I saw on the bottom of the menu board they had BYOB times listed with "bring some for us!" :rotfl2: Too bad Judy and Marlene were still feeling a little puny and couldn't really enjoy the full meal.

I saw that too -- pretty funny!

Doesn't getting the staff engaged in your experience make it so much richer?? Totally true at WDW, and seemingly so here too!!

Yep-er. Totally agree.

Lovely update with all the stories and personal interaction you had with hte owners! Looks like they truly enjoy serving their customers.

Absolutely. He said it keeps him young.

MMMm...apflestrudel. Yum!! I was too stuffed to try dessert at Biergarten.

I can understand that. Having more potatoes was always like dessert to me!

:cloud9: Looks like a fantastic place! The menu looks fantastic, there are some real authentic dishes on it (with some Americanized things as well like the chicken schnitzel, but that's ok! ;)).

Their website lists the chicken item as Weiner Backhuhn, but it's probably easier for their customers to understand if they list weiner schnitzel as being available in either veal, pork, or chicken. I realize the only "true" weiner schnitzel is the veal. At Biergarten last time, it was chicken also, which kind of bummed me out. :confused3

But why didn't you get the "Polsterzipf" for dessert??? I have no idea what it is, but the name is very funny, it means "cushion corner". :goodvibes

How funny! When I went over there Bernd asked me if I needed help with the dessert menu, but I knew I wanted to try their apfel strudel so I didn't make him go through the list. I guess I should have! The other one I was familiar with was sachertorte, but I wasn't impressed with it in Vienna -- they seemed too dry for me.

I would say 4 Judys:

first pictures, then part of her head in second picture (the one all the way to right because she is the only one with curly hair in your family), then fourth pic (obviously) and finally with the soup.

Exactly right! :cheer2: You are our winner yet again!!!

You haven't lost your touch Magdalene!

Great update. That restaurant looks like a hoot and the food looks delicious. Sorry everyone had the stomach flu for Christmas (happened to all my brother's kids too), but I am glad you were able to enjoy your meal. That was so fun! Great side update!

Thanks MEK. A "hoot" is a good description for it!

That food looks awesome! I will have to stop there on my way to Hershey next year,,,,

Thanks for joining in plutoyensid! :welcome:

Yes, if you're passing through the area you should definitely make an effort to stop and check it out.

That's a nice photobomb from James in the 5th picture down

The food looks delicious!

Yeah, I saw him do it, but figured it would just give you a feel for what my everyday life is like! :sad2:

The food was delish!

Err...no. But I went back and found it!
I'm so ashamed.

Good (that you found it, not that you're ashamed, no scratch that -- good on both counts). I'd hate for you to miss a Seinfeld reference.

I like this place already.

Still liking this place.

Man, I am really loving this restaurant.

I'm beginning to think that you like it whenever I'm getting hassled.

Hey hey hey! This is a family board!
However, it is most impressive. Takes up half the plate!

I was laughing so hard when I read this! :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Good thing I hadn't just gotten back from the swimming pool.

Dude! Enough of the dirty talk! Children read these threads!
However, that is good to know.

Stop! You're killing me! :lmao:

Bavarian-style potato salad is awesome, isn't it? :lovestruc

MmmHmm. ::yes::

Don't tell Patrick that.

He'll figure it out soon enough.

No way. Herwig is MUCH hotter.

I'll tell him you said so, next time I see him.

Personally, I'm pretty happy with America's law on that one.

But you're an anti-dentite.

And what a fine one it was.

This made me laugh as hard as your previous stuff. :lmao:

I know...can you imagine? Taking pictures of menus and food? Pfffffft. Tourists.

Ridiculous!

I am SO driving to Pennsylvania now. Speaking of which, I'll be heading to York in February for work. You guys live around there?

Oh, York is beautiful in February! It's about an hour and a half drive away. I'll PM you.

Hehehe I love the reference to The Big Lebowski on the menu board. One of my favorite movies, especially from the Coen Brothers. I just saw True Grit and loved it!

I'm a big fan of the Coen Brothers' movies too. "Fargo" was on last night, but my kids were still up, so we couldn't watch it. I flipped to it for a second and it was NOT a good scene. I had to hit the "last channel" button fast! We still like to quote, "If you were missing a car, howouldjaknow?"

Have you ever seen the original "True Grit" with John Wayne?

Looks like you found a little gem of a restaurant. The staff seem very friendly and outgoing to their customers (and tourists alike ;) ) Too bad everyone was not feeling up to a full meal. What a great experience! Thanks for sharing.

I think so....we'll definitely have to stop there again sometime.

OMG, you're killing me - I loooove Austrian food! What a fun experience; who knew you could get such entertainment outside of The World?!

Glad you liked the review V! It did remind me of WDW.

No, it's not a hot dog. I guess you might think that because of Oscar Meyer weiners. But Wein is the Austrian spelling of Vienna, and a schnitzel is a breaded veal cutlet....so weiner schnitzel is a breaded veal cutlet, cooked in the Viennese style.

ahem.... WEIN is the German word for wine - while WIEN is the Austrian spelling of Vienna.... "EI" is pronounced like the "i" in wine, while "IE" is pronounced like "ee" in beer....

But the rest of your explanation is pretty good! Actually Viennese style means breaded and fried. :goodvibes Schnitzel is only the cut of meat...

:confused3

Well, the Backhuhn should be more like a fried chicken, i.e. the whole chicken breaded and fried. But I am not really sure... At Biergarten, which is German, not Austrian, it should not be chicken!! When I started reading the restaurant reviews on the DIS in 2006 it was chicken and I always thought that this was wrong, but then it was changed to pork in recent years. I am very sad that they changed it back to chicken... :sad2:

I did some research and mainly it is just a pocket of dough filled with jam, like a turnover, but not with puff pastry, more something like cookie dough... I think the apfelstrudel was better! :thumbsup2

Exactly right! :cheer2: You are our winner yet again!!!

You haven't lost your touch Magdalene!

And at first I thought I missed my opportunity by being asleep when you posted your update!! :goodvibes

Oops, I knew that but was too careless to check my spelling. Dan is going to be so disappointed in me. I should have just waited for you to explain...you do such a good job translating for us and describing your culture. :)

I think it was pork when we went in 2009, but finding it was chicken this last time was a big disappointment.

Oh yeah, I made the right choice. :cool1:

No, somehow you always come through.

Magdalene is apparently NOT losing her touch, but YOU are. :lmao:

OMG!!!:scared1::scared1::scared1: Please, please DON'T tell me that!!! I tried to take that smilie thingy off, and have my computer running in DIScreet mode to save bytes. Now, I'll NEVER get my links in order again- which just goes to prove that I definitely have NOT lost my touch at being the biggest loser and code manipulation!

Oh no, even Rosie's giving me grief now! "I" before "E" except after "C", or when sounding like "A" as in Neighbor and Weigh.

raspberries to you, Pal. I think my pants just walked off after having been shocked off- I amaze myself sometimes!! :lmao: Lookie now...

Well that's no fun. Hmpf.

Not to be in a heckling sort of mood tonight, but look at Rosie's delicous spelling of delicious! :lmao: I guess "i"s have no place at all. :rotfl2: And that's what you all get for my getting stuck in an airport for now 3 hours!!
