The Moist Exhausting Free Trip Ever - Link to Part II Thread pg. 244

Day 6 - Part 7

It seemed like our time with Cherie and her family flew by as we talked in Kidani’s Community Hall and the kids played games. But soon it was time to head back to the room to get cleaned up and get ready for our dinner at Boma. We’d be meeting Judy’s PChef director there, and her husband and two daughters. Her director and husband made an appearance in my PTR, in the “Flashback PChef TR” chapters on Vienna, and I referred to them as “L” and “B2”, so I’ll stick with that. Their family also loves Boma, and like us, have eaten there several times.

Back in the suite, while I was waiting for everyone to get ready I had to take another giraffe picture, since this one was demonstrating what they would do if somebody yelled “duck!”.

IMG_3550.jpg

As we left the hotel I thought that I’d better take a picture of the lobby since I hadn’t taken any yet. (On this trip anyway.)

IMG_3552.jpg

I can’t remember if we walked to Jambo House or caught a park bus, but regardless, we were there a few minutes later and I had to take the obligatory photo of the Jambo House lobby. I love those chandeliers that resemble African warrior shields.

IMG_3554.jpg

We met L, B2, and family in the waiting area outside of Boma and I took a picture of the restaurant that already had me salivating.

IMG_3555.jpg

Our table ended up being near where the server is in right side of the picture above…either the table he’s waiting on or the one to its left.

Then I walked up to the Victoria Falls Lounge to take another picture of the restaurant below.

IMG_3558.jpg

Soon we were called to be seated. Our server was Abdel, and we asked him what soups were on the buffet this evening. He listed them for us and I was disappointed because carrot ginger was not being served this evening, again. (It wasn’t on the menu when we visited last year either.) Apparently I looked disappointed because he asked, “What were you hoping for sir?” I told him “the carrot ginger”, and L chimed-in that she always liked their butternut squash soup. He said he would mention it to the chef in order to see if one of them could be made for us.

Anyway, drink orders were placed and yada yada yada…we all dispersed to different areas of the buffet. Well, at least one of us hung back for a few minutes to keep an eye on cameras, purses, and other valuables. You know you can’t be too careful.

My first stop was the soup station, despite my disappointment that carrot ginger wasn’t being offered on this particular evening. I came back with three, and assembled them into a “hidden mickey” for a picture.

IMG_3561.jpg

Unfortunately, I didn’t take any notes so I have to guess at what these are. I think the one at the top right is a mushroom soup, the top left is black-eyed pea something or other, and I have no idea what the bottom one is.

Judy ordered a wine flight, and it arrived right on schedule.

IMG_3562.jpg

I still had a couple more soups to try from the buffet. I’ve said before that I love Boma’s soups and could easily make a meal just from that section of the buffet alone. Sorry that I can’t tell you what they were -- I wish I could remember.

IMG_3564.jpg

At one point Abdel announced to our table that the chef had been able to make some butternut squash soup for us and delivered us a few bowls of it. The soup on the right in the picture above may be butternut squash, or the one with my first plate of food below, or maybe both, I have no idea! Apparently, the only thing I was focused on right then was shoveling soup into my piehole.

I had forgotten how sweet the butternut squash soup is. It’s good, but tastes like it should be served for dessert.

Like I said above, I eventually got my first “real” plate of food and somehow another soup. I’m not sure what I have on the plate other than couscous in the upper right, and fufu in the lower right.

IMG_3565.jpg

Being done with the soups, it was finally time to hit the meat station of the buffet. But guess what…when I returned, Abdel had brought out some carrot ginger soup that the chef had made especially for us! What is this, my sixth or seventh bowl of soup?

IMG_3566.jpg

It looks like I got some chicken and ribs, there’s salmon in the center of the plate (it’s really good), maybe some saffron rice, and I always forget what those round things are.

Oh, I should mention how much L loved the carrot ginger soup. She’d never had it before and was now raving over it. Judy mentioned that we had the recipe at home, and that we’d received it after our first visit to Boma back in 2001. Most of the Disney recipes are available online now, on allears.net, but when we were there in 2001 Judy said to our server that she was going to have to buy an African cookbook because everything was so good. Our server told us to jot down any dishes we liked, with our e-mail address, and the chef would send us the recipe. I sent L the recipe after we returned home and she’s made it several times.

During dinner we talked with L and B2 about their day. They’d had quite an exasperating time. They’d gone to Typhoon Lagoon with the passes they’d received from PChef, but they forgot one of their bags in their hotel room. The missing bag contained the swimsuit of their youngest daughter. L looked for a replacement in the Typhoon Lagoon gift shop but didn’t find anything suitable (pun intended), so B2 took a bus back to the Grand Floridian to retrieve the bag. The poor guy spent three hours on the buses, and forgot to take a cell phone with him so couldn’t give them an update on where he was. When he finally returned, he rode three rides before the afternoon storms hit and closed the park. Then, before exiting the park he thought he’d treat himself to a caramel sundae since he’s a big caramel fan. He got in a really long line and when he finally got to the window to order, they were out of caramel. So, they’d had one of “those” days at WDW.

Here’s a picture of Judy’s dessert plate.

IMG_3567.jpg

Before I moved on to desserts I wanted to sample some items from the salads area. I know that salads are usually what you eat first in a meal, but hey, I was on vacation. Here I have hummus and pita bread, pasta salad (which ROCKS believe it or not, one of my favorite things from the meal), kool slaai, Moroccan seafood salad (?), and avocado/grapefruit/papaya salad.

IMG_3568.jpg

I finally decided to end the meal and took a trip to retrieve some dessert items.

IMG_3569.jpg

I took a picture of B2, L, and family. I’ve blurred the girls’ faces since I never exactly mentioned that these might end up on the internet.

IMG_3570-2.jpg

Their youngest daughter was really cute listening to James at the end of the table. He was telling stories and giving the impression that he had the world all figured out, and somehow he had her rapt attention. This picture missed the moment by a second or two, as somehow they realized that they were being watched.

IMG_3571-2.jpg

Before we left, we asked Abdel to take a picture of our group.
IMG_3574-2.jpg

We left the restaurant at about 9 pm and L’s family walked back to Kidani with us to see our suite. They were duly impressed. They also liked our gift shop better than the one at the Grand Floridian -- they bought a ½ gallon of milk for $2.95, which is what they had been paying for a pint over there.

After they left, we wound-down by watching a little TV and getting ready for bed. It had been another fun day at Disney World and tomorrow we were planning an Epcot day.

Having the chef specially prepare soup for you...amazing. And so nice to hear, too, as I sometimes start to think all anyone does on the Dis is gripe about how the food has gone downhill... :sad2: Your pictures, as always, are beautiful. I just love AKL and really hope we get to stay there someday. Looking forward to just being able to visit in February.

See that first picture of Boma, our table was where the girl with the blue shirt and pony tail is sitting- where we enjoyed all kinds of carrot/ginger soup. :cloud9::banana::cloud9:

Judy went the white flight, I went with reds. Yum! Wine just seems to pair so well with EVERYTHING at Boma!!

How frustrating to have "one of those days at Disney"-where everything just seems to go wrong, no matter how you try to avoid it.

Abd.... was your man of the night! How nice of him to go the extra mile to get the soups you really wanted. You all scored that night with a really great meal. :woohoo:

Anyway, drink orders were placed and yada yada yada…we all dispersed to different areas of the buffet.

:rotfl2: What's the matter Glenn? Are you going stingey on the details on us???

I still had a couple more soups to try from the buffet. I’ve said before that I love Boma’s soups and could easily make a meal just from that section of the buffet alone. Sorry that I can’t tell you what they were -- I wish I could remember.

Let's call them Magical Mystery Soups...just because that sounds cool.

At one point Abdel announced to our table that the chef had been able to make some butternut squash soup for us and delivered us a few bowls of it.

What luck! All this talk of soup is making me hungry.

The soup on the right in the picture above may be butternut squash, or the one with my first plate of food below, or maybe both, I have no idea! Apparently, the only thing I was focused on right then was shoveling soup into my piehole.

:rotfl2: One track mind :rotfl2:

Here’s a picture of Judy’s dessert plate.

IMG_3567.jpg

What? No zebra dome?!? What an atrocity! You tell Judy I am very disappointed in her :snooty::laughing:

I finally decided to end the meal and took a trip to retrieve some dessert items.

IMG_3569.jpg

Oh! A zebra dome! You can't go to Boma without getting a zebra dome. Good boy Glenn. Here's a cookie.

I really need to try Boma for dinner. As you know, I tried it for breakfast and it's basically the same as all the other buffet breakfasts in WDW. Some your plates of food look delicious!

2 Judys (the first one is her thumb on the dessert plate)

ETA: Looks like I am the only one still playing along??? Well, Marv has a good excuse, he is eating dinner at Le Cellier right now I think...

Boma is a great restaurant! How wonderful that you got your favourite soup! I think I suggested to you to ask for it if it isn't on the buffet line in your PTR, didn't I? I was told that the first time I went on the culinary tour that you could ask for oyur favourite soup.

In your first "real food" plate I think there is pap between the couscous and the fufu. And then there is rice on the top left - seems like a very starchy plate to me. The round balls on your meat plate are falafel - made from chick peas.

Unfortunately Disney buffets are getting more and more expensive. I heard that Boma will be 39 per adult in 2011, I hope this is not true. This would really make me reconsider eating there again even though this has been the one restaurant I have visited on every WDW trip so far...

Maybe 5 if you can see her reflection in the wine glasses. :confused3

/
We have always avoided Boma in the past because it's a "resort way over there and only reachable from here by bus" restaurant. We may have to suck it up and make the trek anyway because it looks well worth the effort. (We stay at CBR and I doubt people at AKL make the same effort to get to Shutters.)

Oh Boma and the carrot ginger soup!

I think Eric had 3 bowls of it when we were there!

Absolutely nothing wrong with soup for dinner, 6-7 bowls or more! How wonderful they made both kinds for you, that's Disney magic at its best.

What a horrible day Judy's co workers family had, that is just awful, I'm glad they were able to relax with you for dinner!

Great update!

Wow... I totally dropped the ball on that one. I think I merged two thoughts into one sentence. What I was TRYING to say is....

Your plates of food look delicious! :p

I'm sorry, Jen, I was just messing with ya, and couldnt' resist. :rotfl: They did all look great, but especially the soups- which weren't on plates at all.

I'm sorry, Jen, I was just messing with ya, and couldnt' resist. :rotfl: They did all look great, but especially the soups- which weren't on plates at all.

Smartie pants! It's all good. Goes to show how much you're paying attention though. I'll have to be more careful next time :rolleyes1

I am playing - I concur with 2 Judy's.

Maybe an adults trip or now that my kids are older it may work. :confused3

I keep hearing so may good things about Boma, I think it will have to go onthe list and not for breakfast.

The Pampered Chefs got pampered by the Chefs!:rotfl2: So cool they specially made both soups for you! We were not exactly thrilled with the food at Boma - African spices and Moroccan spices are okay for a few bites, and then we can take it or leave it. That being said, I think we got the best service of the whole trip at Boma, and when I ordered my glass of wine, the server took the time to ask which notes I enjoyed in my cabernet, and he brought me a perfectly delicious glass - so I had two!!! :cloud9:

Having the chef specially prepare soup for you...amazing. And so nice to hear, too, as I sometimes start to think all anyone does on the Dis is gripe about how the food has gone downhill... :sad2:

I know! Can you imagine...just saying "Aw, I was hoping for xxxx" and suddenly pixiedust: the chef makes it for you.

I agree, there's a lot of griping about the food on the DIS. I'm sure some of it is psychological; that expectations have been built up by prior magical experiences or what other people have written. But maybe my family is just easier to please. :confused3

Your pictures, as always, are beautiful. I just love AKL and really hope we get to stay there someday. Looking forward to just being able to visit in February.

Thanks. AKL is beautiful. We're always so busy, running off to the parks, that it's hard to take the time to enjoy it, but I could easily do a non-park trip there and just soak-in all the sights and sounds.

See that first picture of Boma, our table was where the girl with the blue shirt and pony tail is sitting- where we enjoyed all kinds of carrot/ginger soup. :cloud9::banana:

Right near the server in the picture? So, you were close to where we were.

Oh, they had carrot/ginger on the buffet when you were there? So, you didn't have to beg.

Judy went the white flight, I went with reds. Yum! Wine just seems to pair so well with EVERYTHING at Boma!!

I'm not sure what wine would go with a zebra dome, but for most everything else, yes. ;)

How frustrating to have "one of those days at Disney"-where everything just seems to go wrong, no matter how you try to avoid it.

They were a little exasperated and glad to have the day behind them.

Abd.... was your man of the night! How nice of him to go the extra mile to get the soups you really wanted. You all scored that night with a really great meal. :woohoo:

He did all right, and the chef went the extra mile for us, for sure.

:rotfl2: What's the matter Glenn? Are you going stingey on the details on us???

Yeah, kinda. Believe it or not, I was kind of dreading writing this chapter because I knew I didn't have any notes on what the soups and foods were.

Let's call them Magical Mystery Soups...just because that sounds cool.

Ooo a Beatles reference! :thumbsup2

What luck! All this talk of soup is making me hungry.

:rotfl2: One track mind :rotfl2:

Soup, soup, soup, must have soup.

What? No zebra dome?!? What an atrocity! You tell Judy I am very disappointed in her :snooty::laughing:

I forgot about that...I think she's not all that crazy for zebra domes actually. She doesn't like that you can taste the alcohol. I say "Bring it on!" :woohoo:

Oh! A zebra dome! You can't go to Boma without getting a zebra dome. Good boy Glenn. Here's a cookie.

Thanks!

I really need to try Boma for dinner. As you know, I tried it for breakfast and it's basically the same as all the other buffet breakfasts in WDW. Some your plates of food look delicious!

I've never been there for breakfast. I'd like to try it sometime, but I have a hard time justifying those prices for a breakfast. I know it's a buffet, and I would definitely eat my fill, but on a normal day (ie. non-Disney) I don't eat a lot for breakfast.

:lmao::lmao: Was there a particular one that didn't?! :rotfl2:

That's what I was thinking too. :rotfl2: She probably didn't like the one with the couscous and vegetables.

2 Judys (the first one is her thumb on the dessert plate)

ETA: Looks like I am the only one still playing along??? Well, Marv has a good excuse, he is eating dinner at Le Cellier right now I think...

That's it -- 2 Judy's!! :yay: You win again Magdalene!

I know, you definitely give the others a chance. It's not like you're the first person to post every time...you're usually the 3rd or 4th, but the first to mention the Judy count. Oh well, more glory for you to bask in!

Boma is a great restaurant! How wonderful that you got your favourite soup! I think I suggested to you to ask for it if it isn't on the buffet line in your PTR, didn't I? I was told that the first time I went on the culinary tour that you could ask for oyur favourite soup.

You probably did, but I didn't remember at the time. I just had some sad puppy dog eyes and our server hooked us up.

In your first "real food" plate I think there is pap between the couscous and the fufu. And then there is rice on the top left - seems like a very starchy plate to me. The round balls on your meat plate are falafel - made from chick peas.

Yes, I must have gone to the "starch station" of the buffet. :lmao:

Unfortunately Disney buffets are getting more and more expensive. I heard that Boma will be 39 per adult in 2011, I hope this is not true. This would really make me reconsider eating there again even though this has been the one restaurant I have visited on every WDW trip so far...

Oh, don't tell me that. Unfortunately, I believe it. It also stinks that they raise the prices for the busier seasons.

Maybe 5 if you can see her reflection in the wine glasses. :confused3

You know I had to go back and look closely. Didn't see any reflections, so sorry.

We have always avoided Boma in the past because it's a "resort way over there and only reachable from here by bus" restaurant. We may have to suck it up and make the trek anyway because it looks well worth the effort. (We stay at CBR and I doubt people at AKL make the same effort to get to Shutters.)

Oh, you must make the trek! It's our favorite! When you go, arrive at least an hour early to give yourself time to explore Jambo House and see the animal viewing areas. And go hungry...have a late breakfast and no lunch, maybe just a snack to tide you over.

Ha ha, I've heard of Shutters...but I think you're right.

Oh Boma and the carrot ginger soup!

I think Eric had 3 bowls of it when we were there!

It's not your everyday Campbell's vegetable beef.

Eric knows what's good!

Absolutely nothing wrong with soup for dinner, 6-7 bowls or more!

Maybe not, but you're probably supposed to stop there.

How wonderful they made both kinds for you, that's Disney magic at its best.

They were very nice to us!

What a horrible day Judy's co workers family had, that is just awful, I'm glad they were able to relax with you for dinner!

Great update!

They were relaxed...there were no signs that they had been through the wringer until they started telling the story.

Thanks!

So cool to know that the chef will make you your own soup. that is awesome. I think all the restaurants at AKL are absolutely the best. I could just live there and go on a rotation between Boma, Sanaa, the Mara, and Jiko. I would be in heaven!

Wow... I totally dropped the ball on that one. I think I merged two thoughts into one sentence. What I was TRYING to say is....

Your plates of food look delicious! :p

Don't worry about it. I'm lucky to have one thought. And when I do, it usually just...."Doughnuts"
durr.gif

I'm sorry, Jen, I was just messing with ya, and couldnt' resist. :rotfl: They did all look great, but especially the soups- which weren't on plates at all.

First Rosie, now Jen. You're keeping all of us on our toes. :rotfl2:

Smartie pants! It's all good. Goes to show how much you're paying attention though. I'll have to be more careful next time :rolleyes1

Yes, be careful. This is important stuff!

I am playing - I concur with 2 Judy's.

Yep. Bask in the glory of earning the non-existent silver medal for this round. :goodvibes

Maybe an adults trip or now that my kids are older it may work. :confused3

I keep hearing so may good things about Boma, I think it will have to go onthe list and not for breakfast.

I highly recommend it Pat!

The Pampered Chefs got pampered by the Chefs!:rotfl2: So cool they specially made both soups for you!

Yes, well put!

We were not exactly thrilled with the food at Boma - African spices and Moroccan spices are okay for a few bites, and then we can take it or leave it.

I can believe it. I've seen enough reviews where people didn't like it that I'm finally ready to admit that it may not be for everybody, but we still love it.

That being said, I think we got the best service of the whole trip at Boma, and when I ordered my glass of wine, the server took the time to ask which notes I enjoyed in my cabernet, and he brought me a perfectly delicious glass - so I had two!!! :cloud9:

Gee, I wouldn't even know how to answer that question.

I'd probably end up with a Hi-C fruit punch. Ba dum bum! :rotfl:

So cool to know that the chef will make you your own soup. that is awesome. I think all the restaurants at AKL are absolutely the best. I could just live there and go on a rotation between Boma, Sanaa, the Mara, and Jiko. I would be in heaven!

I'm with you Mary Ellen! That's a big reason why our DVC home is AKV.

Just catching up...

Never eaten at Boma before, but it sounds like it's worth the trip! Is there enough on the menu for boring lame-o non-adventurous American meat-and-potatoes eaters? Not that there's anyone here like that. :rolleyes1

Love that lobby at AKL. What a stunning building! I could stare at that place for hours.

And Abdel was clearly a winner as a server. Hopefully he made up for your friend's lousy day at TL. Ugh!

The update of Boma looks great. We've never eaten dinner there, but we've been for breakfast on our last two visits. How great of the chefs to go out of their way in making you the soup you so wanted.

Great group shot too.

Yeah, kinda. Believe it or not, I was kind of dreading writing this chapter because I knew I didn't have any notes on what the soups and foods were.

That's okay. Just make it up as you go along.

Ooo a Beatles reference! :thumbsup2

Of course! :thumbsup2

Soup, soup, soup, must have soup.

At least I know what you like now

I forgot about that...I think she's not all that crazy for zebra domes actually. She doesn't like that you can taste the alcohol. I say "Bring it on!" :woohoo:

There's alcohol in those???

Oh my gosh! I am in love with that smiley!

I've never been there for breakfast. I'd like to try it sometime, but I have a hard time justifying those prices for a breakfast. I know it's a buffet, and I would definitely eat my fill, but on a normal day (ie. non-Disney) I don't eat a lot for breakfast.

Disney buffet breakfast are definitely for the experience, not the food. I mean it's all pretty much the same. I totally agree with not eating a lot for breakfast so most of the time it's not worth the money. But I just can't pass up giving a big bear hug to Pooh bear!

That's what I was thinking too. :rotfl2: She probably didn't like the one with the couscous and vegetables.

I dunno... the funky pasta salad kind of turned me off

Don't worry about it. I'm lucky to have one thought. And when I do, it usually just...."Doughnuts"
durr.gif

MMMMmmmmmm doughnuts....

First Rosie, now Jen. You're keeping all of us on our toes. :rotfl2:

Seriously!

Yes, be careful. This is important stuff!

Well now I know....
