So the basics are....turn your clock ahead to the future time zone and follow in line with that... then don't go to bed until it's bedtime. No naps right? Lots of water and no cafeinne on the flight or all day?
For our flight...we leave at 4:30pm our time which is 1:30am spain time. So we should try to go right to sleep? Or just push through and stay awake 24 hours. We don't land in spain until 5:30pm so it's pretty close to bed time anyways.
What do you seasoned travellers recommend? Adding in my 9 year old to the mix.
Opinons please...

Going back will be the more easy one for you, if I go to the USA its always better, I stay up do not sleep, rest in the chair or walk about and stay up to the time it gets dark in USA.
Coming to us you loose between 5/8 hours to the UK, more for Europe.
So and the airlines do not help on this as they serve meals etc late, but
Try to get ahead a little, foodwise, my kids are better with a small meal at airport whilst waiting rather , a wait for it ot be served on the plane.
I say small as you do not wish to have misshaps. This also happens if you stay awake on the plane eat and then fall aslepp the food lies on your stomach, kids are worse.
So small food before flight, try to get to sleep as soon as possible set your watch to Europe time, and try to get a seat in a quite area, not near Restrooms etc.
Sleeping on a plane is difficult, if you can on this leg have premium economy or business class its so worth it, I slept well on a night flight before and was so good the next day.
Small food, they offer you a lot but do not have it, fruit water, not sodas, the pressure of the plane doesnt help, if you know what I mean.
Booze just causes so many problems.
Close windows if its light and try to sleep.
When you get to Europe try your best to go with the daylight, so if you arrive and its day, try not to sleep during the day, you will stay in USA time.
Then you will not sleep that night and be bad the next day.
If you arrive very very early, and know you really will not last the whole day, have a shower and a power nap for a couple of hours and get out in the sunshine all afternoon, worn out you will sleep that night.
Kids adjust well.
