The Med Thread - All Sailings - Mediterranean

Hi Everyone,

I already went to AAA & got 500.00 in Euros. I probably will get another 500.00 in Euros and the last $1,000. put on a AAA debit card. (you need a pin number for usuage)

Patricia

Can you tell me what exchange rate you got from AAA, and were there any fees? I've been trying to figure out how many Euros to get here and how many to get from ATM machines there. I have heard that the ATM machines in Europe generally give a better exchange rate than banks here.

Thanks for the replies. I will probably start out with 1000 Euros and change more on the ship if need be. I just don't want to change (pay a fee) and then change back (another fee). It seems like I recall one company in 2004 that allowed you to change back any unused portion for free if you bought over a certain amount. Does that sound familiar to anyone? :confused3

I know I live in the uk, but heres my advise about exchanging money.

Shop around. A lot of companies charge a commission. Also if its anything like here, there will be quite a difference in the exchange rate. (bank rate verus tourist rate) Even some ATMs abroad charge for using your card. Here in the UK usually a message pops up saying you are going to be charged for using this machine. Not sure about rest of Europe, although I do remember it occurring once in Spain a while back.

Having travelled to the USA 7 times, I have done a lot of searching around for great rates. I am happy because I've found a bank where the CC uses the banks rate and there is no commission, and the debit card has no charges for using in ATMS. :thumbsup2 I use it only for my travelling. Have fun searching !;)

I will definitely start shopping around. The pound has gone up a bit since 2004. At the airport here, today's rate was $1 for 0.44 Pounds. :headache:

I get one advantage at the airport though. For airport employees, they waive the commission if you exchange over $1000.

We hit the $2 a £1 mark today.

The rates today according the the Federal Reserve are as follows:

1 GBP (British Pound) costs $2.00 US
1 Euro costs $1.35 US

The exchange companies won't give you a rate this good though.
At the airport today, 1 GBP (Pound) would cost $2.27 :scared1:

Plan your budgets accordingly.

It's hard to believe when we booked the cruise back in 2006 the exchange rate was only 1.26

...but with as much as the cruise and the excursions cost, whatever we spend extra will only be a spit in the bucket ;-)

Wow ... I just checked out the Canadian exchange and 1 pound Sterling = $2.23 Canadian, 1 Euro = $1.5 Canadian and $1 US = $1.11 Canadian. Boy I paid my cruise off too early .. I paid a $1.15 exchange.

I can't complain though I remember when $1 US was $1.40 Canadian!!

Does anyone know what the rates are like at Heathrow Airport currency exchanges for comparison? Are they very much higher than at US airports? Last time we went to England, we just hit the booth at Heathrow. (3 years ago)

Same question for Barcelona Airport. How about the DCL Currency Exchange onboard? About the same, or a bit higher than outside? :confused3

We did this at Thomas Cook.

Was at the bank yesterday and bought US Dollars (1.145), Pounds (2.34) and Euros (1.568).
MJGirl-your rates look pretty good.

Those rates came from TD Canada Trust! Where abouts are you from Mom_Rules... I'm from the KW area!

After reading about other folks getting their repo cruise docs, I started thinking about first med cruise docs. Why? Because I'm doing the repo and the first med cruise so I need to get the first med cruise docs before I leave for the repo.

I just called DCL and asked them to send my first med cruise docs with my repo docs (and to send them "soon").

They asked me to tell other b2b people to call DCL and make the same arrangement.

Thanx for the heads up Andy! We are B2B 10nt/Repo in Aug. so I will request our Repo docs be sent together with our final Med cruise docs.
