The Maury Povich Show just called!

They were interested in DH and his lonnnnnggg hair, and wanted to know more of his "story" as to why he needed a makeover.

I had called in to the show in January for the "mountain man makeover" show. DH has really long curly hair-keeps it in a pony tail, but can look really scruffy with it loose and unshaven and trashy clothes. He agreed, so they called back and forth a few times, and evidently the story I gave them at the time wasn't good enough. (I said that he looked old enough to be our DS6 and DS4's GF, and I know he would look at least 10 yrs younger with a haircut and some color over the gray.) They gave up on us (I was glad-we had a trip to WDW coming up) and when the show came out, I was really glad because the people on there were awful to each other. "Look at him-He looks AWFUL, Maurey- do something!"

So today they are calling back, with a new approach-"Make YOur Dreams Come True" or something like that. The producer that called me must have been disappointed when I told her I wouldn't trash my husband on the show, because after a few minutes, she thanked me for my honesty and said good bye.

Did I blow it?? I'm thinking that I am really glad I'm not going to be on that show. The guests on there usually come off as looking like total loosers, or idiots.. DH didn't mind-he's too busy at work anyway..

I'm glad you didn't want to embarass you're DH or yourself, that's all those shows are for with Maury and Jerry Springer.

Now...if it were Oprah you tried to get on, I'm sure that whole show would have been done with taste and professionalism.

So... has DH cut his long hair yet?

Ya know, you would think after all this going on in January and now them calling back, and all the time it being suggested that he would look younger, he would have cut it. But the answer to your question is NO.

I don't want to be the one to talk him into it. I know what it's like to have long hair that you are "attached" to and then just have it chopped off and not looking like you thought it would. I am not going to be responsible for that! It's really not that bad, but I'm thinking he would look a lot younger with it short. And it seems like being on the MP show is the only way he would EVER do it!! LOL

I have only watched Maury Povich's show a few times, and each time its "Which Man is My Baby's Daddy" type of show. I think you did the right thing!

Our dear friends were approached by the Jenny Jones show. They were doing a show on college professors who have affairs with their students. I'm not clear on how they got our friends names, but they did. He was a college professor and she was a student, but neither were married and they waited until AFTER the semester was over before they started dating. Apparently that wasn't juicy enough and they weren't selected either. Trash sells, apparently, true romance doesn't.

That's so funny you would say that, because when the QE guys first came on, I watched religiously and DH started too. Then out of the blue he said, "If those guys came over, I'd let them cut my hair." That's sort of what started it, because up until then he never mentioned cutting his hair. (It is down to his belt in a pony tail!)

I think Kyan is a hottie..., but I love them all.

I'm glad they didn't pick you, to be honest... I think that show has gone to the dogs, and you and your DH would run a real risk of being ridiculed and trashed on TV and you wouldn't have much choice in their editing. If it was someone more reputable, then I think it would be cool... but I wouldn't trust them. His show is all trash now...

I LOVE the Queer Eye Guys! Check and see if they'll be in your area anytime soon! I heard they're branching out of NYC soon. I would trust them

Oh yeah, Queer Eye would do a great job. See if you can hook him up there! Could he handle that drastic change though? Because you know they would be having none of mountain man! LOL!

Would your DH cut his hair to donate to Locks of Love? I know a guy who grows his hair long just to get it cut and donate it. He's done it about 6 times, he says it takes about a year to grow it long enough to cut (I think they need a minimum of 10 inches). His attitude is, growing hair is easy for him, but not so easy for kids with cancer or other medical conditions.

Phillybeth, if he got it cut, we would most definitely attempt the donation. His hair isn't very thick, and it is really curly/frizzy. And gray, which I guess they could color. Would they still want it?? What do you do, just ask your stylist if they would send it, or do you send it yourself? Your friend sounds like a great guy..

I have to admit that lately I've been watching Maury. If i'm off on a weekday I have to watch those "Who's my baby's Daddy?" episodes. I can't help but find it amusing when they start with the "they have the same eyes, nose, etc.", it's a guilty pleasure. But the truth I guess, deep down, is I fell sorry for those people. I want to commend you hrh_disney_queen. That's great that you have such respect for your DH. How could you do something nice for someone you love and belittle them in the process? I don't care what all these other posters say about you, your ok!

LInk to their site with more info than I can give! I know a lot of people in my area do this, it seems like every week in the community newspapers there are groups of people, sports teams, etc donating their hair.

You don't want to be on that show anyway. If I ever have the misfortune to catch it, I always think the people are not-so-very-smart (that's putting it nicely) that are on it.

And I ALWAYS wonder what a reputable newswoman like Connie Chung is doing being married to Maury!

Me too!
I wouldn't even think about Springer or Maury - no matter what the premise.

Maybe you could check on the Montel show.

I didn't see the original show - just caught an update where they checked back with long hair guys they had done make-overs on. Didn't see any trash talking at all and all the guys they checked back with said they were glad they went on the show. Really seemed to make a huge impact on some of them and their families.

Do consider the locks of love thing. My dd has done that before - it's been awhile, but I think it just needs to be 10 or 11 inches long to donate and you can send it in yourself.

I have often wondered the same thing. Like what do they talk about around the dinner table?

Connie: I interviewed the Pope today.
Maury: I interviewed a guy who has gotten his wife's mother pregnant.

Ok, that's a slight exaggeration for Connie, but ewww, Maury..

Wasn't he a newsman at one time, too?

Honestly, I can't imagine why anyone would go on any show. Why would someone want to be put in front of a camera and made fun of. Why try to have a stranger convince him to cut his hair? If your wishes mean nothing, why would he care what Maury thought?
