Anyone else NOT doing Marathon Weekend this year and starting to feel it?

We've done the last 4 years at WDW and the DL half marathon a couple months ago, but we need to take a year off to do other things. I knew I would feel sad as we got closer to January and everyone was ramping up their training.... but I didn't know it would start so early! :lmao:

I need a support group to tell me that it's ok when I'm not getting on a plane to WDW come January! And I'm not even training for anything right now, and I feel like such a slacker! :lmao:

I love this!!!

I'm feeling it too, but my saving grace is that I have Tink at the end of Jan. I would be pulling my hair out if I wasn't doing any Disney until the DL 1/2 in Sept. :rotfl2:

Last year was my 1st at WDW and I loved the whole weekend. Always nice to change up parks from your home park once in awhile.

I will be back for my 1st Goofy in '13' so that'll be good.

Thanks for starting this. I felt like I was the only one who couldn't make it this year. :sad1: I am hoping to do Goofy again in 13, so I'll be joining you, Kim. All the threads have started focusing on January, so I am avoiding most of them. My hubby just doesn't understand either.

Right there with you. This is my 2nd year not going after 2 marathons then 2 Goofy's. Last year was real tough. Even my wife asked as we got closer "aren't you doing Disney this year?" Since we drive it isn't a major trip and I make all the plans so she is never sure :)

My advice is to train for something. I stopped going so I could focus on triathlons and there is only so much money to go around. But even with that, there is something missing. Maybe next year......

And, if anyone ever complains about the cost of Disney races, just try doing triathlons :)

I skipped a year around 04 or 05, but went ahead and went to Disney for the weekend. I was really in a funk but it was a great way to deal with the withdraw pangs of the weekend.

Duane, I agree 100%... $700 52 weeks in advance is a huge investment in the hope of training well and staying healthy. That does not include the $400 for the half practice race and the few hundred for other practice races. I was fortunate and had some minor sponsorship as well as freebie membership in a club. The tradeoff was that I had to carry 3-4 classes a week that really mess with training plans.

Right there with you. I had to defer what would've been my third Goofy to 2013 because we're moving overseas next week. This is always one of my favorite races of the year, and I'm really sad to be missing it. The only good thing is that I can go run the Dubai marathon in late January so all my training won't be for naught.

OMG you guys I just said this yesterday at work-I miss that I am not doing it this year. The weight I have put on is one thing but not training and feeling great is another. Also miss the excitement of planning the trip- we have done it for the past 3 yrs.

We have done marathon weekend the last 5 yrs. After doing my 2nd Goofy in Jan. I said I would take a break for 2012.

I stayed strong and felt confident with my decision not to register through the summer but now as everyone is ramping up their training I have a slight twinge of regret for not going.

A major plus for me is having more time on the weekends with no worries about getting in thoses long back to back runs.:thumbsup2

:goodvibes Glad to know I'm not the only one feeling the Marathon Weekend "letdown". It seems like everyone is so excited about their training and... it's hard not to feel it. One thing that is making the "withdrawal" easier for me is that I'm currently having a pretty rough pregnancy (as-yet-undiagnosed autoimmune issues) and so I would likely have had to cancel anything longer than the 5K, if we had planned on going. Knowing that it's best for me to be taking it easier helps with not being registered for an event for the first time in almost 5 years. :sad2:

Wow! That's quite an overseas move! How long are you looking a being in Dubai for? I visited for a quick "extended layover" a few years ago and it is such a cool city.

I had done 5 yrs of Marathon weekends before this year (2011) but had decided the race wasn't worth it anymore after 2010. It was easy for 2011 as we did the Panama Canal cruise and were on the wonder for Marathon weekend. This year I'm looking forward to the Princess which is so much more relaxed and a more fun atmosphere IMHO anyway- so really not missing it so much!

Going to be gone for three years or so. Coming back for Goofy 2013, though, since I doubt I can defer more than once. :)

Sometimes it's easier to stay away from the boards entirely this time of year...

This is the second year in a row that we're missing marathon weekend, and every few days DH and I look at each other with a look that says "we could...," but then we consider the cost and remember why we're not doing it. I think we'll end up waiting until some of our local running group decide it's time to try Disney, and then we'll come back with them. Otherwise, it's just too expensive when we consider how many other races there are to choose from.

At least I'm continuing to train. I'm most likely doing a marathon in February, so I'll still be doing the long runs through the winter.

Sarah - Congrats on the pregnancy - hope they figure out what's happening and it doesn't cause any problems! Take it easy.

John, I had no idea you were about to experience such a huge move! Wow. And just when I was debating that Houston marathon. ;)

Sarah, I hope everything's okay. I have an auto immune disease, but it's an easy one, Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I've been told by multiple doctors that if I had to have an autoimmune disease, this was the one I would want. Whatever, it still stinks! What are they thinking with you?

I am in training for my first ultra on April Fool's Day and am really starting to focus on my training for that. Thank goodness, because otherwise, I'd be having even more withdrawal symptoms. Something about the fact that, by the time the full is going on, I'll have hit that number and then some, makes me feel a tiny bit better.

Which ultra are you running? I did Rocky Raccoon a few years ago and loved it. Loved it so much I did another one last year. Trails are so much nicer to run on than roads. :)

This is the first year that I'm not doing any events marathon weekend and don't feel a bit of the withdrawals. I don't know if it is that I've been turned off by RunDisney, that the Wine & Dine is now my favorite Disney event, or that for the cost I can do two out of town races. It is probably a combination of all three really since I did feel a bit left out not doing the W&D this year.

Really the only thing I'll miss is meeting up with WISH friends.

I've been reading race reports from the Rocky Raccoon and some others, lately the Javelina Jundred. I don't think I'm ready for full trails yet. A little scary!!!!! I'm doing the Brew to Brew here, locally in KC. It's 44 miles and only about 1/3 on trails. I'm just hoping to finish at this point. I may move up someday to your level, but since I've technically only done one marathon (this year's Goofy), I thought 44 sounded better. :)

I am definitely in Disney race withdrawal. Haven't done one since the 2010 Princess, aaah!

I had hoped to do the half this January, but reality intruded. I'm now hoping to do a January 2013 race, but it all depends on the schedule of events (both mine and Disney's) of the coming year.

Anyway, I do wish I could be planning a trip down for the race. I think I'm in Disney withdrawal in general!

You'll really enjoy moving up to trails in the future. They are so much nicer to run on than roads when you're going that far. The softness really helps reduce the wear and tear on your legs and knees. Hope your 44 goes well! :)

sunshine girl - I'm with you too, the last disney race I ran was princess '10 too! I'm not sure when the next time I'll get down there either. A small part of me is hoping for wine and dine this year, but I realistically doubt it will happen.

It's not really the race fees - which of course are pretty extravagant - but it's the flight, the hotel, the park tickets. all the food, the drinks, etc that add up so quickly. I miss going to school in gainesville, just a mere two hour drive away!

at least there are no lack of local races by me

Thanks. I think wear and tear will definitely play a factor once that mileage gets up there.

How was the move? Have you found any local running clubs or anything yet?
