The Magic, the Memories and the Food! February11 Update July 23 WPuck's Express

Hi Karin! :wave2: As soon as I read Krispy Kremes in your title I knew I had to check this dining report out!! :rotfl:

The Nussini bar looks delish! I have never tried one of them.

Also yay on having a dis meet - sounds like you all had a great time! :thumbsup2

I have avoided this update because I SAW the heading and I hadn't eaten. I am not a coconut fan so the cookies did nothing for me, but those Krispy Kreme's...all I can say is :worship::worship::worship:

I see you got a picture of my hammock.

That coconut patty looks like :cloud9:

CSR is gorgeous!!! OMG I can't waittt!! :yay:

Ohh the Krispie Kremes...:worship:...we used to have a Krispie Kreme shop dangerously close to our house, but then it closed. :(

Hi and welcome! :flower3:
I have seen you on Stefy's pre trip report! :goodvibes
The DISmeet was so much fun and we are looking forward to some more this summer! :woohoo:
Do they sell the Nussini bars in Great Britain? If they do, please try one, they are really nice.

These coconut patties are so good! Moist and soft and sweet = :cloud9:

It's a wonderful resort! We love to stay in the Cabanas area - Casitas looks too much like hotel for me (if that makes sense :confused3)

A closed Krispy Kreme store - :sad2: - hope you get your fill when you go back to Disney! :thumbsup2

Day 3, February 21

Dinner at California Grill

After our Krispy lunch we were stuffed and spent some time shopping and exploring the resort some more.

For dinner we had a reservation at the Calfornia Grill. We arrived at the resort, signed in and asked if Ron would be working that day - no he wasn't. So we went upstairs and went outside to watch Wishes as we were sure we would not be seated beforehand.

After the fireworks we went back inside and looked for a spot to sit down and wait for our buzzer to go off. And right then the buzzer went off. We were amazed. We were led to a table at the back of the restaurant between two larger parties who were definitely celebrating.

Our server introduced herself and we realized that it was Erica, the server we had had when we last visited the California Grill.
She took our drinks orders and brought out

a basket of their fresh sourdough bread and

some butter with sea salt.

Usually when we dine at the California Grill we share a starter, have a main course and dessert, but this time that was different.
Since we were not tied by a dining plan we decided that instead of a main course we would both order two starters and maybe skip dessert altogether.

So this is what we finally ordered ........

Tom had the Spicy Kazan Roll, with Crab, Shrimp, Bay Scallops, Tuna and Fireball Sauce. He had tried it on our last trip and LOVED it! Well this time it didn't disappoint either.
I only had a little taste, I am not that much of a sushi fan, but it was really good and fresh and the different textures are just wonderful!
Tom was very happy with his first starter! :thumbsup2

I am a flatbread girl and I just love the ones at the California Grill. So I ordered the Grilled Flat Iron Steak Flatbread with Cambozola Blue, Mushroom Cream, Horseradish and Tempura Shallots.
I love Cambozola Cheese and it worked perfectly well with the steak, the mushroom cream was devine, a very light Mushroom fragrance and the sharp horseradish, paired with the crispy shallots.
I worked hard, but could not finish it, but I did LOVE it!

Tom's second starter were the Fire Roasted Maine “Big One” Mussels, with Coconut Lime and Curry Broth, Finger Lime Aioli and Coriander Bread. Well those mussels are BIG ones! There were plenty of them, plump and juicy and the broth was just delicious. He enjoyed it very much.

My second choice was the Main Lobster Salad with Avocado and Yogurt Dressing, Jicama and local Honeybell Vinaigrette.
Now, first off I expected something different - something with leaves! :rotfl2: When I tried the Lobster Salad I found it very cold, icy cold and the Lobster on top was pretty chewy. The lobster salad itself had kind of a funny taste, rather on the sweet side and I didn't like the pairing with the avocado and yogurt dressing. I had a few forks full of it and left the rest.

Remember that I had said, that we had talked about maybe skipping dessert. Now when I hadn't finished my second starter Erica insisted I take a look at the dessert menu. Guess what - I better had not, as after reading the first few lines I KNEW, I was going to have dessert. :lmao:

Tom kept his promise and ordered

a Cappuccino, that came with a chocolate biscotti. Nice strong coffee with lots of foam on top! He enjoyed it!

I ordered this ..........

...... the Butterscotch Bread Pudding, with Apple Compote, Drunken Butterscotch Sauce and Vanilla-Toffee Ice Cream. This was by far the best breadpudding I have ever had (and I had a lot of Ohana's! ;)).
The breadpudding itself was light and airy and the apple compote was sweet and tart at the same time. The ice-cream and butterscotch sauce were sweet and yummy and all together felt like heaven in your mouth.
I was VERY happy Erica had done such a good job of talking me into dessert! ;)

Coming up: Breakfast at Wolfgang Puck's Express

Karin, I love the CG review. I've yet to have a bad meal there. The sushi that Tom had looked great. This was the 1st place I got up enough courage to try sushi and they hooked me with the first bite! The flat breads are alway great there. I usually eat so much that desert is not of much interest. Next time I'll have to pace myself so I can enjoy their deserts. Thanks again for your great reviews.

Wonderful CG review Karin :goodvibes

We have only eaten there once and the appetisers where far more interesting to me than the entrees so if we visit again I think we will copy you and Tom

I am seriously tempted to re-book just to try the bread pudding!

I have never had bread pudding before. That one looked really good!

Oh, wow! I am totally on board with your choice to order only starters at Cali Grill. They are outstanding and there's such a long list of them! The sushi there is quite good. And your flatbread looks incredible. You did an excellent job describing it, too. Personally, I'm from New England, and Maine lobster is plentiful and I've been eating it all my life. Thus, I only really enjoy lobster when its boiled and then dripping in drawn butter. :lmao: Why do anything else with it? :confused3

I'd go into more of my thougs on Cali Grill, but I might give away some of my plans..and I have PTR...did you know that? Just kidding. :lmao:

Great choice of ordering starters and desserts at CG! :thumbsup2

I am also not a sushi person but love the flatbread! It's a shame the Lobster salad was not everything you expected it to be but that dessert looks heavenly! :cloud9: I'm also glad Erica talked you into it!

In response to your question I have never seen Nussini bars in the UK but have not really tried to look for them. I will keep my eyes peeled to see if I see anywhere that stocks them. Looking forward to reading more! :)

Loving the CG review!:thumbsup2

I had the spicy Kazan roll last year and whenever I see a photo of it I start drooling - like Pavlov's dogs!

One day I will try a flatbread - Simon always has one and says how delicious they are.

We have not had a bad meal there either. I made a bad choice with my second starter - it was just not what I expected, but I should have read the menu more carefully. ;)
I have a problem with eating "too much" so I cannot fit in dessert as well. ;) Usually we share an appetizer and have a main course, but the two starters were a much better idea!
You have to try the Valhrona chocolate cake if you like that sort of thing - it is awesome!!

You should definitely eat at CG again, Linda! Even if the breadpudding is no longer on the menu, I am sure you will find some yummy food there! :thumbsup2

Great review of CG!

Thank you! :goodvibes

I have never had bread pudding before. That one looked really good!

You have never had bread pudding? You don't know what you are missing, Jen! ;)
Have you never eaten at Ohana? I think their bread pudding is wonderful, but the one at the CG was even better than that! :thumbsup2
