I am sorry for the problems. I know you must be upset. And I do think that the attorney was out of line. If you provided the info they asked, it's their responsibility as a professional office to keep that information readily available.

One thing no one else has commented on was the billing of 20 minutes. I believe that 20 minutes is the minimum billing rate for most lawyers. That's how they can consistently bill 80 hours or more a week. They talk to you for 3 minutes, then talk to 3 other people for 3 minutes (total phycial time, probably 20 minutes given the time to look up numbers and dial), but they get to bill 20 minutes *4.

Thank you all for your support. It's definitely an emotional ride.

I *think* we may have found an agency that we like, but it is out of state (although they are licensed here in NJ) and it may mean going through a home study again (which I really don't want to do). Plus this place is a bit more expensive (but honest about it).

DH and I are taking some time to discuss it and hopefully 2004 will be fresh (and positive) step for us.

Just to clarify, all attorneys don't bill in 20 minute increments. The attorney I work for bills in 6 minute increments, as most attorneys do in this area. It would be on your fee agreement that you signed when you hired her. If you signed no fee agreement, you should have.

I agree with previous posters, call the local Bar association, not just the State's. There should be a Professionalism committee that oversees complaints against attorneys. They can look into the situation, and sometimes get some of your retainer back.

I am sorry you are going through this, and hope you can find a reputable attorney (there are many out there) who can help you find the baby for you.
