“Better not tell you now”

I believe that the Magic 8 Ball is being cautious. After all, this magical orb was present when my wife came into my study one crisp Autumn day and asked me if I thought she would look good if she cut off half of her hair and then dyed it in a rainbow of colors: namely, every color of every team in the old Southwest Conference (she was a football fan).

I, rather nonchalantly, said ‘I’m sure you would look wonderful” (a husband’s stock response). I then went back to my ‘studies’ on the computer (involving, if I recall, how much water a balloon can safely hold).

To make a long story short, when my wife reappeared in my study the next day both the Magic 8 Ball and I were appalled. Mind, the team colors back then included purple for TCU (your stating purple put me in mind of this incident), orange for Texas; red for Texas Tech; maroon for Texas A & M; some girly color for SMU, as well colors from the other teams I can no longer remember. Remember, she had also shorn off half of her hair (the half down the middle, from ear to ear).

When she looked in the mirror (apparently for the first time) she was also appalled and became quite upset at me for telling her that she would look wonderful. She then picked up the Magic 8 Ball (which was trying to nonchalantly roll out of the room) and heaved it at me; she missed, but the Magic 8 Ball ended up stuck in the plaster of the wall like a cannonball, where it stayed for almost a week until I could figure out how to pry it loose (I used a sledgehammer and went in from the other side of the wall, and then pushed the Magic 8 Ball out; I had not measured well and so made quite a few holes in the outside wall until I came upon the Magic 8 Ball).

Hence, I believe that the Magic 8 Ball would rather wait and see the actual result, until expressing its opinion, hence the ‘better not tell you now’. What the Magic 8 Ball lacks in arms and legs it makes up for in common sense.

Ah! Just what we like, a potentially life-changing question! (I chose to ignore the disclaimer).

Now, I, and I’m sure the Magic 8 Ball, do not know what a ‘DF’ is. However, we do understand ‘Disney elopement’, which obviously means that you are running off to get married to Walt Disney or (more likely since Walt died back in 1968) one of his grandsons. I assume that DF means “Disney Frank” or “Disney Fred” or such.

So, let us consult the Magic 8 Ball!

Oh! Magic 8 Ball! Will this crazy Disney elopement work out for My Sister’s Princess and the Disney ancestor known as “DF”?

(shaking the Magic 8 Ball like a groom after a bachelor party):

“Yes”

Hmm. Seems pretty clear. Nothing really for me to ‘explain’. No need for one of my ‘stories’. No need to even mention water balloons.

Well, it is approaching the eve of Halloween. That means I must roll away the Magic 8 Ball and start toting all of my colorful water balloons up to the second floor balcony to, er, hand out to the kiddos tomorrow night. Who knows? I may even hand out some water balloons this evening, like to people who drive by my house.

Before I go I will ask the Magic 8 Ball a question that I rather expected to be asked, but no one did.

Oh! Magic 8 Ball! Will the person reading this Magic 8 Ball thread catch the H1N1 flu?

(shaking the Magic 8 Ball into a fever):

“No”.

Well, that is good news, dear reader! See? By reading this thread you have ‘inoculated’ yourself against the H1N1 flu! Those people whom insist on not clicking on this thread have put themselves at risk! Go forth, armed with the greatest vaccine off all, the vaccine of laughter and magical 8 balls!

(However, I would still wash my hands frequently, sneeze into your or someone else’s elbow, get the vaccine whenever it is available to you, and, above all, avoid shaking hands with Keith Richards).
