Can't forget the black-eyed peas (a veggie...not the rock band) and chicken-fried steak.

Your last line about your husband cracks me up! :lmao: I was born and raised in Texas. You talk about a LONG drive from one end of a state to the other...

Anyway, gotta LOVE that southern food....YUM!

OK, funny, true story. Mr Silly and I (and the kids) lived in Canada for two years on student visas. We are still trying to figure out how to go back. Maybe we need to work on our PhD's... anyhow when we left we moved to Texas. We had our pick of Austin or Boston because that is where we had job/PhD program possibilities. So I may not be the smartest girl in town but that was a no brainer. Three kids in a walk up two bedroom apartment in Boston OR a 4 bedroom house in Austin... so we moved to Austin. We drove from Nova Scotia to Texas over a few weeks. We stopped in Iowa to see Grandparents on the way so we came into Texas through the 'top' or whatever. I think we must have been on the I-35 but I am not so good about freeway names so I could have that wrong. Anyhow we cross into Texas and there is a welcome center. After that there is NOTHING for what seemed like hours. Awhile into it we were looking for a radio station and happened onto a song we had never heard befor... it went something like "You can't get the he double l out of Texas"

Now everytime we try to drive out of Texas we think of that song. Austin is kinda in the middle of Texas (only kind of). It is 8 hours to the border heading west! I think it is about 6 going south-east (towards WDW).

It is one heck of a long state.

People laughed at us when we called Texas "The South" but to us it was. We are Yanks. We were SHOCKED to see civil war monuments for the Southern Generals with no mention of the North. We crack up at the History books our kids use, because they cover events so oddly (the civil war for example).

Chic-Fil-a sounds good for dinner... :woohoo:

So I know there are about 5 pages between the post I quoted and this, so I am way behind on the current conversation- but all the talk of food and the South and Texas made me think of that story.

Trying to catch up.

Ok who has eaten fried chicken livers???
My mother LOVES these. I don't like liver of any sort, but have grown up around fried chicken livers AND chicken gizzards.

If you do end up trying grits...don't ruin them by putting sugar in them....make 'em good with some butter, salt and cheese!!!
Red Velvet cake also has cream cheese icing and it is even better when there is pecans sprinkled on top.....it is heavenly.
Pongo...I ate Chick-Fil-A yesterday! YUM!! Did you ever mix their sweet tea and lemonade together?!?!

Oh but I love them with butter and a touch of maple syrup in them!

Is it possible to be a Northerner by pedigree and a Southerner by disposition? My family is Northern all the way to the 1600's. However I just adore my grits, greens, red velvet cake, fried okra, ice box pie, and a nice julip for Derby Day. I even made my own version of grits called Super Bowl grits for football watching. It involved cheddar cheese and salsa and other goodies.

damn, now I am hungry. Missed y'all today! Will try to pop in tomorrow before I am LA bound.

OMG, my step-dad is the only person I know that eats chicken livers! He eats the livers and the gizzards. His saying is "if you fry anything in enough butter it'll taste good". Suprisingly he's a pretty healthy guy!!!

So I have this funny story about this friend of ours from NC. He grew up on the coast and apparently they are known to have a stronger accent. Not that I know from experience. So his son has a friend over to visit, friend is 8ish, and they're going to have pie. So Mr. NC asks friend if he want some pie, only he says it very southern.

So friend says "Do I want some what?"
Mr. NC "Pie" very southern
Friend "What?"
Mr. NC "Pie"
"what????"
"PIE, P - I - E" Mr. NC spells it out.
Friends says "oh pie" in a very NON-Southern way (I guess that would be Yankee).

Anyway, true story, us Yankees don't quite get all the southern although I have been instructed that ya'll is singular while all ya'll is plural! :confused3

:drinking1 Hi Maelstromers ...

Anybody wanna have a drink with me? Or seven? It's been one of THOSE days.

Gonna grab a quite bite and then try to catch up on what's been going on in this funfunfun thread.

And :sad2: our little trip ends on Oct. 3! We may try to go to MNSSHP, but probably won't bump into Maelstromers. :sad2: But oh, yeah,  we ARE going ... Being at Disney with no Maelstromers is better than being at home with 'em. Maybe. No offense, that didn't really come out the ... oh nevermind.

:drinking1:

I'm with ya, Kim. Where is everyone?

HEY! We are chatting! Where are y'all????

Y'all have a nice chat? I was at the rink (ice skating for the Southerners :teeth: )

HaleyB - don't feel bad, it took me 3 years to convince DH to go back to WDW! We're going in July!

Mumbler - DH LOVES gizzards and livers. Now if I could only find a Disney restaurant that serves them we'd probably go every year!

Huuummmmmm, maybe a thought for the American pavilion at Epcot. Serving all the above foods mentioned!

Nighty, night Maelstromers.

Sleep.........is a fastpass!

I'll try not to feel bad and just be happy for all my friends who are going and getting free food.

I hope all ya'll gain 5 pounds. Just kidding. I think. :rotfl2:

I shouldn't complain too much. We are going to Italy and Greece for two weeks without the children this year. So long as my Dad's health holds up, because my parents are taking the kids.

It will be our first no kids vacation ever.

Haley - love your edit note two posts back. I have to tell my husband that I'm not the only one who cleans for the cleaning lady!!!

kpk89 - your tr comment about cleaning before you leave on vacation so you don't come home to a pit.....I had to SHOW that one to DH. It's so true, and he always makes fun of me!!!

Good morning everybody! It's Friday!! :Pinkbounc

Good mornin'!

It's a brand new day! A rainy one, but who cares? It's not YESTerday. Which was ewwwy.

Couple of trip planning questions for Maelstromers more experienced than I.

First, for a quick 4 day trip, AP or not AP? With the DVC discount it's roughly the same price as a 7 day non-expiring hopper, if I get it through a discount place. We've got enough left over hoppers for one of us, if we don't do parks on one day. Which means three park days. IF we AP, it'll only be worth it if we go back again for at least 4-5 days within the year. If I get the 7 day no-exp pass, then we'll have days saved for whenever we decide to go again.

Second -- for such a quick trip, do you think it's worth it to try to fit in MNSSHP? I've never been, but I've always wanted to take the kids. When they're a little bigger and can actually stay awake through it! So should DH and I give it a shot? We're there 9/30 - 10/3 so I think it's only happening one night during our stay.

And ... dining plan? Never tried it, but now it's being offered to DVC. Not the FREE dining, but still. I'm thinking it's a pretty good deal, right? Especially during Food & Wine?

Thanks for any help!

Maelstrom!

Maelstrom!

.. is a Fastpass?!?

I can only answer the last question. I did the F&W festival last year using the dining plan and I can't rave enough about it. Now we don't typically eat at a TS restaurant every day on vacation, but the dining plan gave us the freedom to do just that. We really spent a very minimal amount of money out of pocket on the plan. Having said that, that was an adults only trip with my Dad. When I go back next year with my DH and teenage stepdaughters, I don't think I'd choose it then since it would be paying for 5 people a day and we wouldn't normally spend that much money on food every day.

I'm thinking about buying the AP for next year because I have a 4 day trip planned for this December and a week next April. Even if the $ doesn't matchup exactly, I'm thinking that the room discounts will help make up for it and it will give me that much more incentive to pop down to Florida for a weekend or two throughout the year. :teeth: But it's giving me a headache to try to figure out the best way to it!

I think we're going Sept 30-Oct 5 this year provided I can switch my time off at work!! I'll be on the lookout for Maelstromers!!
