Pongo - don't think I let it slip past me that you mentioned Sonny's BBQ in your inital post about southern food. That is the best BBQ ever. I could eat my weight AND yours in their food. In seminary my buddy and I went every Monday night for all you can eat pork. Waitresses saw us coming and had our drinks waiting for us at the door when we walked in.

I love me some Sonny's. Just ask Rhonda!

Blessings!
Mark

I love me some Sonny's too. DO they still just put the bottles of the sauce out on the table so you can just wallow in it's goodness. mmmmm.....

Ok Now I am hungry. And there's no Sonny's up here.

I love black eyed peas.

Grits. I forgot about them. I love them with sausage.

Red Velvet cake.....yum! This is why I like Golden Coral - they usually have it on the buffet.

Mel - Remember the movie Steele Magnolia's. I believe the armadillo grooms cake in the wedding scene was red velvet.
It's blood red cake with cream cheese icing.

Double yum!

Now what is chess pie???

I just ate and yall are making me hungry again. :rotfl:

Chick fil A. What can I say? I can't believe yall don't have those up north. I pick up DD from preschool and we go to lunch everyday. We eat Chick fil A a lot. I don't know what I'd do without it. Even their salads are awesome. Poor Pongo. I'm so sorry. I'll ship ya some Chick fil A nuggets along with some boiled p-nuts.

Okay, I see a lot of Maelstromers are planning on going to MNSSHP Oct. 5. We'll definitely have to let each other know what we're dressing up as so we can keep an eye out.

I really, really need to make my ADRs.

I just haven't had time to sit down and plan out my days yet. DS has another ballgame tonight and has a test on his multiplication tables tomorrow. Then they're having an Easter party up at his school tomorrow that I have to help out with. And after that, we're leaving to go to the beach for a few days.

Yay!

DH was bound and determined we were taking a family trip somewhere for Spring Break. Since Disney was out, we settled on Destin. We just love it there. We have gone every year since DS was born except for last year.
I'm just looking forward to laying on the beach and relaxing for a change.

Georgia A: I know exactly what you're talking about. When DS was younger, he had to watch Babe over and over again. I can hear the Lalalalalaaaa in my head now. Thanks. :goodvibes I would think the 5th would be less crowded. You know, Friday night just seems like it would be more crowded to me. We went last year on a Friday. It was also the very first MNSSHP. It was crazy. I'm sure it had more to do with the fact that it was the first one as opposed to it just being a Friday, but I would think a Friday would bring bigger crowds from the locals.

Allright. I'm gonna jump in the mix here. Who has been to Restaurant Marrakesh? How was it? We've never eaten there and are considering trying it this go round.

Marky Mark, I agree with you on Chefs. I actually just posted about our little trip there in my trip report. Go on over. Check it out. :teeth:

Okay, somebody has to be Maelstrom Fastpasses for the Halloween party. Who's gonna do it?

and remember when Tom Skerritt asked for a piece and Shirley McClean hacked off its butt? So funny!

Okay, I'm a Northern girl(minnesota) moved south, although many would argue that Florida is not the real South, too many transplants. Anywho, my point is that I have now lived down here for 5 years and NEVER eaten at Chick-A-Fil-A(or however you spell it). There's one about everyother block around here too. I'm starting to feel a little ashamed, I guess I aught to at least go out and try it.

I do go to S n S and have been to Sonny's. That's something you don't find up North is BBQ, it's EVERYWHERE down here.

The thing I miss, and it's really just a small thing, is at the Taco Bell up north you can get these seasoned tator tot type things. They don't have anything like that down here.
I told you it was just a small thing!!

For you Mel - I just consulted my "How to speak Southern" book and here is what they had to say about grits:

Griyuts: What no Southern breakfast would be complete without - grits.
"Ah like griyuts with butter and sawt on 'em, but Ah purely love'em with red-eye gravy"

:teeth:

Who started these posts about southern food?!

It may be officially Chick-Fil-A, but it will always be Chick-Ole, as per my oldest DS when he was 3! And real southern BBQ is Carolina Pulled Pork--no beef and no shredded or sliced stuff! There was this little joint in Upper East TN, way back in the mountains. You couldn't go there without a local who knew his way around (think "Deliverance") but the pounding fear as you weaved your way along the mountain roads was worth the pay off in the end. Actually, I don't know if it was in TN or NC--back on those roads, they horseshoed across the stateline so often, you weren't sure where you were.

We were married on New Year's Eve (DH is a CPA and needed the tax write-off. What can I say?) and guess what we served at the reception? Black-eyed pea salad, of course! (Oh, and the aforementioned Carolina Pulled Pork BBQ was served at the rehearsal dinner!)

And my cell phone rings "Rocky Top." I never have a problem figuring out if it's my phone ringing around here! I actually had a friend walk out of her wedding to "Rocky Top"--I think her DH bleeds orange!

Now you people are making me homesick! I wanna go home!

I'm right there with the grits and chicken fried steak, but black eyed peas - not!
Yeah, it's an aquired taste. They MUST be cooked in plenty of bacon grease and picked fresh from the garden. You know, the ones with the green snaps. The dried black-eyed peas don't even compare.

I'm a disgrace to my southern roots because I don't like grits...at all. My family is quite embarrased. They wonder how they could have raised such a child.

And my DH disgraces his roots because he won't drink sweet tea. This is a man who uses karo syrup on his pancakes and honey on his chocolate ice cream but won't drink sweet tea. Go figure.

What's up with us? Did our parents drop us on our heads? Well, actually, DMIL DID drop DH on his head...she loves to tell that story...things are starting make more sense to me now.....

LaLa...I've gotta admit, we were VERY disappointed in Marrakesh. Probably won't go there again. We love Moroccan/Middle Eastern/Mediterranean type food... and that wasn't it!! Tangierine Cafe is much better, IMHO!

:rotfl2:

DH has "Georgia on my mind" on his phone. You should see the looks all the Canucks give him when his phone rings.

"What.....no Hockey Night in Canada" theme! Everyone here has that :teeth:

Oooh--I'll have to keep that one in mind. If/when we move back to TN, I'll have to change my ring tone to make it stand out again ('cause nobody else has "Rocky Top" in Knoxville, ya know?).

Back in TN, I'm the Canuck, with my "aboots" and "serviettes" and going to the "washroom." Up here in the north, I'm the southern redneck. My kids' accents are hilarious--nobody can figure out where we're from. You should hear them say the phrase "about right here" with the Canadian "about" and the southern "right" (which is a two-syllable word when pronounced correctly :teeth: ).

Okay, thanks Rhonda. We've eaten at Tangieriene too in the past and we really liked it so I thought the sit down would be good too. I'll have to mark it off. There are just so many different places to eat in Epcot that I hate to waste a meal on someplace that's not gonna be good when there are so many possibilities out there. One of our favorite restaurants here is a little Mediterranean place and the Chicken Schwarma is sooooo good. They have really good hummus and pita bread too. Oh wait, I forgot. We were talking southern food, weren't we?

For some strange reason, I'm craving Sonny's. Oh, BTW, The Food Network is gonna be down here filming a segment at our absolute favorite BBQ place. It's called The Shed. It's an actual litte run down shed and they have the best BBQ you'd ever want to put in your mouth. They call their fans Shed Heads. This guy from Ole Miss started it right after he graduated and just built the place piece by piece at his dad's KOA Campground. I really think the secret is the sauce. If you don't have good sauce, you just don't have good BBQ. The ribs are really tender and all of his sides are to die for too. I never thought I could like macaroni salad, but it's really good. We order it every year for our SuperBowl party.

Okay, now I'm really hungry.

Chess pie is kinda like pecan pie without the pecans.

Thanks jw50!

We have something up here called "Butter Tarts" Same thing. Pecan tarts without the pecans. I didn't know that most non-Canadians have never heard of Butter Tarts. They are a Canadian thing.

skent10 - remember Butter Tarts..........yyyyyuuuummmm!!

Is that pee-canz or puh-cons?

BTW our pecan's up here in the Christmas mixed nuts are always red. :confused3 My Mississippian friend thought that was really weird, 'cause I didn't know what type of nut it was, and said, oh these are supposed to be red.

Again, I got that "Crazy Canuck" look :teeth:

sheridac - ya, that was too funny in the movie!

Yzma, I remember my brother having that book when we were growing up. Very funny! :teeth:

Yummy, Sonny's... I always get "The Big Deal" with pulled pork and sweet tea. It's been awhile since we've eaten there though. There was one down in Columbus (GA), but they closed it. Not sure why since they always seemed busy.

And Chick-fil-A is sooo good. I worked there from the time I was 15 until I graduated college, but never got tired of eating there. Still love it! Great sweet tea too. I make it like that at home and people just love it. They usually say, oooh that's sweet!

Well, it took me most of the day to catch up from the past couple of days worth of posts and now it's time to go home. Guess I'll get some actual work done tomorrow...

puh-cons of course. And if you get the paper shell ones you don't even need a nutcracker to shell them :thumbsup2

Can someone explain what black eyed peas taste like. Do they taste like green peas? If so, double yuck! Just curious. Now I may have been born and raised in Michigan, but I do know and love red velvet cake! And not the crappy kind out of a box either. My momma grew up in a 1 stoplight town. No kidding. Anybody else ever have the delight know as pickled bologna? Or do you fight with family members over the turkey gizzard? I may not be southern, but I can out hick lots of people. I just wish we could get decent sweet tea around here. :drinking1

they are my fav!!!!!

no they are not like a pea at all..they are more like a black bean maybe?? only smaller??? light brown with a dark brown "eye" in the center if you will...

my adrs are as follows

LeCellier
1900PF
Ohana my fav from last trip
LTT
CP
Coral Reef
Alfredos
50's pt cafe
and a few at boatrights just in case we are too tierd to go out after AK or TL day...

only repeat is Ohana

my kids had a choice between CR and GG and they chose CR...I think they are actually trying to get away from the character dining thing :( they chose LTT over CP even though I have ADR's for both becuase my 5yo says "pooh is for babies!!!!" :lmao: :guilty:

they did not want to do the castle again
they are put off by the fact that the characters do not actually "sit and EAT" with them!!!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: They want no part in it anymore apparently....who do these kids think they are anyway OPRAH ??? geeesh

Haven't eaten pickled bologna....but I love some fried bologna!! omg...yum. Can't indulge in that too often. Anyhow....the taste of black eyed peas is hard to describe...if they don't have enough salt and seasoning in them I think they taste like dirt. Seriously. Not that I've tasted dirt on purpose...only when taking bad falls when playing softball.... You have to have some goooood cornbread with them and that makes it yummier!
