It may sound silly to some, but it's a big deal to me. I don't do drugs and I don't care for people who do. Never have, never will.
So, does Barack Obama's admitted pot smoking and cocaine use during his high school and college years trouble you? Or, was that just 'youthful indiscretion?"

I have been thinking a lot about Michelle Obama and how she got to where is today. She would be liked and respected by the Republicans if she was one of them. Think about it. She went from very humble beginnings and a working class family, all the way to Harvard to become a successful person and a good mother to her kids. Didn't she earn a scholarship by hard work, good grades, and staying focused? Isn't that what the GOP always says when it talks about making it on your own, personal responsibility, etc, etc? It's funny how that's overlooked and how she's portrayed.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

She could be another Condi Rice. Except in Michelle's case she hasn't sold her soul to the devil.

It's difficult. Recently a lot of our MPs have admitted to smoking marijuana and binge drinking when they were young and there was quite a furore over it but in the end, very few really cared.

Doesn't bother me. But then again, I've tried pot too.

First off I'm not an Obama supporter and only post here in this thread because I feel it's more friendlier environment than the conservative thread. Plus I like reading Luv Duke's take on things.

BTW, I do find it disappointing that Obama messed around with Cocaine. On the flip side the Democrat party was never known for giving chastity or morality lessons. The GOP did bill it's self as the party of "family values" platform and when they don't live up to that promise, it's leads to a lot of questions being asked by people like me. I believe in a promise made, is a promise kept. I'm not perfect by any means, but you should at least try to walk the walk.

Say what you want about Michelle Obama, but I really respect her for the hard work and dedication it took to go from the south side of Chicago to Harvard and graduate with high marks. To me that's what is still great about America.

I never heard Obama messed around with coke. I have heard that Bush has. But, that certainly didn't seem to bother anyone who voted for him, because it was common knowledge in 2000 and 2004.

I respect his honesty on the issue and he didn't try and dodge the subject by refusing to answer it or lie about it like Clinton and Bush both did. Here's part of the article highlighted.

"As a presidential candidate, Bill Clinton thought marijuana use could be enough of a liability in 1992 that he felt compelled to say he had not inhaled. And President Bush has managed to deflect endless gossip about his past by acknowledging that he had an "irresponsible" youth but offering no details. Through his book, Obama has become the first potential presidential contender to admit trying cocaine."

I was replying to the poster "Tiger Woods" who was trying to see if I would be one sided and overlook Obama's drug use. Especially when I commented how damaging Cindy's drug abuse and theft of prescription pills may be to some Americans who may not vote for her husband over it. As I said before the Democrat party did not bill it's self as the party of "family values", so when drug abuse, infidelity, etc, comes up, it doesn't reek the stench of hypocrisy too much. That's my opinion.

Regardless who runs for office, I find any hard core drug use to be stupid, and a foolish waste of money, but to each their own. It's their life and their business, just don't being doing it on the dime of the American people as an elected official. Or preach about the evils of it while getting high in private. For example, Rush Limbaugh.

I think that many people did some questionable things when they were young and then have for the most part moved on. If they have truly moved on, I prefer to give them a pass. No one, not even politicians, should pay for mistakes made when they were likely just kids. Even if they were older kids. ;)

Ok, but this is still a liberal forum with no debate (thread title). Liberal democrats in the US are rallying around the Democratic nominee, not trying to tear him down.

From CNN - thought it would make for an interesting discussion.

Black conservatives weigh voting for Obama
Posted: 11:15 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) — Black conservative talk show host Armstrong Williams has never voted for a Democrat for president. That could change this year with Barack Obama as the Democratic Party's nominee.

"I don't necessarily like his policies; I don't like much that he advocates, but for the first time in my life, history thrusts me to really seriously think about it," Williams said. "I can honestly say I have no idea who I'm going to pull that lever for in November. And to me, that's incredible."

Just as Obama has touched black Democratic voters, he has engendered conflicting emotions among black Republicans. They revel over the possibility of a black president but wrestle with the thought that Obama doesn't sit beside them ideologically.

"Among black conservatives," Williams said, "they tell me privately, it would be very hard to vote against him in November."

Perhaps sensing the possibility of such a shift, Republican presidential candidate John McCain has made some efforts to lure black voters. He recently told Essence magazine that he would attend the NAACP's annual convention next month, and he noted that he recently traveled to Selma, Ala., scene of seminal voting rights protests in the 1960s, and "talked about the need to include
'forgotten Americans."'

Still, McCain has a tall order in winning black votes, no doubt made taller by running against a black opponent. In 2004, blacks chose Democrat John Kerry over President Bush by an 88 percent to
11 percent margin, according to exit polls.

J.C. Watts, a former Oklahoma congressman who once was part of the GOP House leadership, said he's thinking of voting for Obama.

Watts said he's still a Republican, but he criticizes his party for neglecting the black community. Black Republicans, he said, have to concede that while they might not agree with Democrats on issues, at least that party reaches out to them.

"And Obama highlights that even more," Watts said, adding that he expects Obama to take on issues such as poverty and urban policy. "Republicans often seem indifferent to those things."

I think doing questionable things from the ages of 14-22 is the definition of "youthful indescretion".

Although, attempting to use "youthful indescretions" as a cover excuse not to vote for a candidate you wouldn't vote for anyway could be classified as "business as usual". :lmao:

I'm not tearing down Barack Obama and I have repeatedly said how much I respect him for getting people enthused, especially the younger generation, for voting and participating in the Democratic process. I don't think I have really ever gone negative on him. Unlike some Hillary supporters, who did a pretty job damaging his image.

I have been far tougher on McCain than Obama, but I get what you're saying, nut4disney. You don't have to say it twice. This forum is yours and I'll stay out of it. I'm gone.:wave2:

Eddie, you can stay as long as you want. :goodvibes

The political journey you've made is nothing short of amazing and gives hope to more than a few people.

So sit back and stay awhile.
