THE LIBERAL THREAD #3- No Debate Please

Read on CNN this morning that the McCain supporters/GOP have plans to go after Michelle Obama. Does attacking a candidate's wife ever help put the opposing candidate over the top? I can't imagine it being very effective...

It didn't work when they did it to Bill Clinton.

It is really distasteful. It means that Democrats will be compelled to take a hard look at Cindy McCain. Unfortunately the higher ground has become a dead end in politics.

One could argue that, on occasion, Bill's presence certainly did Hillary's campaign no favors.

They're already at it. Faux news is calling Mrs. Obama a "baby mama", which is essentially calling her gold-digging wh**e. That's what "baby mama" means in the northeast.

I posted the Analysts suggest "Obama's plan offers three times the tax break to middle class" story.

We should see some interesting responses I'm sure.

I'm sorry, if anyone on TV refers to someone as a 'baby mama', then they no longer have any journalistic credibility.

I can't believe people defend that channel. (Not to say that any of the news channels are any good anymore...)

You mean they're not mentioning Cindy's taking prescription drugs from the charity she founded to supply the needy & when a member of management found out what she was up to she fired him?

Or that her father was involved with organized crime?

It's curious we should be going after Michelle Obama on such petty terms, when in fact Cindy McCain has a much more interesting past.

Hmm, I can only imagine where that thread will go......

I've never given Cindy much thought.

When you think about it, which story is more romantically all-American, "Young girl, born on the South Side of Chicago, works her way to Harvard" or "Pill popping heiress inherits beer distributor"?

"Pill popping heiress inherits beer distributor"?

Looks like she's about to sell Budweiser to a foreign distributor. I'm sure that will go over real well with Missouri voters, eh?

Just a little FYI.

Her father's company which she's now the owner, on the board, etc, is a distributorship, not a brewery. She nor anyone else who owns a distributorship has no control who buys AB.

I doubt if Obama would stand by and watch an attack on Cindy McCain. I think he would very quickly call those doing it exactly what they are: A cancer on politics in the US.

This attack on spouses has got to stop. If and when Cindy McCain claims she's qualified to answer the "3AM" phonecall or "passes the CIC threshold" is the day she becomes fair game.

I have to agree with you on this one. I don't care what side of the political isle you fall on, if you love Americans success stories, then you should admire what Michelle Obama accomplished. She could have easily been another sad statistic that sadly plagues the black community by dropping out of high school, teen pregnancy, victim of violence, etc. Don't get me wrong, those issues affect all teens, but hit the black community the hardest, according to recent figures and data compiled. Her parents should be applauded for their diligence in making sure she became an asset to society, not a burden. She deserves a round of applause as well. Growing up on the south side of Chicago is no easy feat and in just this spring alone, there has been 38 victims of gang related violence/shootings so far and summer hasn't even begun.

It's time we start putting politics aside and giving recognition when it's deserved. I have seen many supporters of McCain, sweep Cindy's drug problem under the rug, say it's in the past and ignore it. Everyone makes mistakes and I'm no exception. I truly feel though if Mrs. Obama had abused prescription drugs in this manner, the coverage of it would be non stop by the people who don't like her or her husband. I firmly believe that there's not enough credit given to those who mange to stay on the path of good behavior, decency, and be successful by making good choices.

I may not vote for anyone this fall, but Mrs. Obama has my respect and I applaud her for making the right choices in life.:thumbsup2

I agree. I sincerely hope nobody within the campaign stoops to attacks on her. Sadly, if it happens, it will be as a reaction to the hateful and nasty jabs at Michelle Obama. Walking away from these kinds of things just doesn't seem to work anymore. Somehow a lot of people have forgotten that these are women with minor children (I think the youngest McCain is fifteen) who are not running for public office. Perhaps if the kids were older I wouldn't feel so strongly about this.

I can almost guarantee with 100% certainty that nobody from the campaign will bring up Cindy's drug use or where the drugs came from, but that certainly doesn't stop people from dragging Michelle's good name through the mud. She's not committed any crime, she's not done anything malicious and yet she is being dragged through the mud regardless. Young girl's should want to grow up and get an education and be able to work at such a high level, but here we are with a woman who did just that, and she is being nothing short of demonized. At least the Obama campaign is smart enough to try and get ahead of it, sadly they will not be able to IMHO....

unless you stump for your hubby...

In other words, you want Cindy McCain's drug addiction and where she got the drugs on the front page as a campaign issue? Is that what you really want? If so, congrats, you get the politics you deserve. And don't complain about it later.

I think some of the McCain supporters are going to be surprised at how much the general public will have a distaste for the problem Cindy McCain had with pills and how she got them. Normal everyday people without the access to powerful lawyers and unlimited amount of funds that she has, would have most likely served time in jail. What she did was a big deal and she had to close down that charity after the DEA did the audit which discovered the theft. It was ignored also when Limbaugh was addicted to pain killers and obtaining them illegally. Yet when I listened to him in the early 1990's, he disliked drug users with a passion and said so on a regular basis. The blatant hypocrisy of him and his fans was one of the reasons why I quit listening to him.

It may sound silly to some, but it's a big deal to me. I don't do drugs and I don't care for people who do. Never have, never will. I guess it won't matter for those who are political diehards and will ignore the hypocrisy and how it conflicts with what the GOP said it stood for. I always said that I haven't abandoned the principles that brought to the Republican party, even if the party and some of it's followers did.

I have been thinking a lot about Michelle Obama and how she got to where is today. She would be liked and respected by the Republicans if she was one of them. Think about it. She went from very humble beginnings and a working class family, all the way to Harvard to become a successful person and a good mother to her kids. Didn't she earn a scholarship by hard work, good grades, and staying focused? Isn't that what the GOP always says when it talks about making it on your own, personal responsibility, etc, etc? It's funny how that's overlooked and how she's portrayed.

Just my thoughts on the matter.
