The Liberal Thread #2 - No Debate Please

They have the "fear" tactic - but they also have a war hero with zillion of years of experience - who is able to cross party lines to get things done. I am not willing to write him off as impossible to win yet.....

I've been thinking this for a while - but can you imagine the ads of Obama is the nominee - they will emphasis his inexperience in ad after ad after ad. Remember what they've done to our past nominees - Dukakis, Mondale, Gore and Kerry ....

That may be able to swing over people - especially should a terrorist event occur - or something pop up that's national security related.......

I think a united Clinton\Obama ticket is the only way to go for this election. They really compliment each other and balance the positive and the negatives of each. Just my two cents.......... The past is littered with failed predictions of the future!! ;)

Oh, you are soooooo right on everything.

The Obama supporters are out in full force here (our primary is this Tuesday). They were standing on street corners with signs and chanting, waving at the cars while I drove DD9 to school. She wanted to open the window and tell them if she was old enough, she'd be voting for McCain :lmao: and here I am in my mini-van studded with Dem stickers. :rotfl: I am raising a little Republican (but she hates Bush though so it's alright)
I'm just curious ... how does she know anything about McCain and what does she like about him? I have an 8-year old and she knows very little about the republican candidates. Now that the democrats will be sucking up to my state in the next couple weeks I plan to pull my DD out of school for a Hillary and Obama rally if there any in Madison.

Well she does not get it from my house. I am staunch Hillary and DH is undecided between Hillary and Barak.

DD believes that McCain will not raise taxes on the upper middle class as much as a democratic president would (this is a purely selfish motive but she says she wants our family to have more money). She is not happy with his Iraq policy (because the war costs too much) but she feels that neither Clinton nor Obama will be able to end the war as quickly as they would like and McCain will be forced to end it quicker than he would like because the American people are sick and tired of it.

DD is against universal health care because her best friend's father is a plastic surgeon and she is afraid her best friend will have less money if there is universal health care (again selfish, but she's 9).

She says Obama is inexperienced, and while he may "sound presidential" (direct quote here) she does not believe he has anything to say except that he will "change things" and she likes things the way they are.

So there you have it folks.

Is her name Alexis P. Keaton?!?

It's great that she's so well thought out on these things at 9. If slightly mis-guided... :)

And do you remind her that McCain has already expressed a willingness to stay in Iraq throughout her lifetime, and that our deficit has doubled under the Republican President, and since McCain won't end the war, thus the money bleeding, that it will come from programs such as schools, healthcare, from the elderly, and those that have less than the upper middle class? Or, taxes will have to go up... or, she will continue to pay the deficit for the rest of her natural life?

When we went to see that movie (I forgot the name with Ben Stiller at the Natural History museum), there was a part where the little boy wants to be a bond trader (it's supposed to be funny) my little angel shouts very loudly (she was only 7 I think) Mama, he wants to be a bond trader just like me!!! The entire theater audience was in stitches.

No. I do not. She is only 9 years old and I am very proud that she has a political opinion that, frankly is a lot better thought out than many adults I know. I do tell her my opinions and why I am voting for Hillary, but I will not in any way denigrate her opinions. My job is to raise an independent thinker, not a Mama clone.

Holy cow! Do you let her watch Fox News after school?!!? Is the BF's family Republican? I still don't get how a 9-year old from a Democratic family hears enough about McCain to formulate an opinion on the taxes, war, health care and Obama's experience. Maybe your DD is exceptional, but my 3rd grader and all her 3rd grade friends are completely clueless on those issues.

I lurk on both the liberal and conservative threads, but haven't posted on either since I'm a more moderate Republican. I think it is great that you allow her to think for herself, and she sounds brilliant. I've been a Republican since an early age, even though I was raised in a very "southern" Democrat family. They still try to sway me! I want my kids to think for themselves, and I try to teach my students to do the same.

Yes, the BF's family is Republican. DD and the friend do discuss politics. He is over here for dinner at least once a week and we discuss politics with him as well so it's not just my DD. They also discuss politics in school. Their Gym was rescheduled this week because their teacher was going to an Obama rally. Everyone in the school is very excited about this election and she gets a lot of information from her friends and teachers.

ETA: NO FOX NEWS ALLOWED IN MY HOUSE. Stupid right wing propaganda machine.

Yes, but if she's able to formulate such intricate ideas, then she should be able to understand both sides of the table, and then formulate opinions with all the information. You listed all her reasons for voting for McCain. Those very reasons are often what we hear on TV or from the Conservative viewpoint. Have you given her the Liberal viewpoint? It sounds that she's old enough and aware enough to know all the issues. If she still feels the same way, that's fine, but she should be aware of all aspects of her decisions.

Of course I talk to her, but it is very hard to tread that fine line with a child this age between giving your opinion (which I do) and indoctrination (which I try to avoid). You have to hear her rail against Bush though. She thinks he is spending too much on the war (she is particularly incensed at the war is being financed-Mama, we'll have to pay interest) and he sounds uneducated. She is amazed that anyone who butchers the English language to that extent ever got elected.

Additionally, I don't think she is old enough to know all the issues. I really do not feel comfortable discussing my pro-choice views with her at this point-and that is a major reason why I am voting Democratic.

Well then, as long as you are talking with her, and she understands what the war means financially, but that she still supports a candidate that will continue to fund it, then you're right.... can't go any further with it than you have.... Although I wonder about the BF's family, I wonder what they say? Our kids spent the last three years going to school with many doctor's children, and they tended to go Democratic oddly enough, caring greatly for the Community as a whole. It was rather surprising to me to be honest.

I really do admire that. Myself ... I'm all for political indoctrination, LOL.

Hmmm ... now I have discussed my pro-choice beliefs with my DD and how women should be able to control their own bodies. I discuss all the options with her: keeping the baby, adoption and abortion.

Interesting that Rasumussen and CNN/Time had polls out yesterday with Clinton losing to McCain but Obama beating McCain.

Ok - I'll say it - these polls are unreliable and change daily.

Gallup had Clinton up by 10 yesterday - I don't believe that for a second.

The National Numbers are especially useless - people who say they are going to vote in November now - cannot be guaranteed to vote it November.........

Oh I agree completely but they do provide a possible glimpse that Independents move towards McCain vs. Clinton and towards Obama vs. McCain.

Yesterday the shrub said "peace and prosperity" are at stake in this election. For goodness sake on what planet does this man reside?:confused3

Now, he's going to be campaigning for McCain, LOL, what a double edged sword that is...

Good. I hope he goes everywhere and tells people that McCain will continue the Bush legacy. That will win the election...for our side. ;)
