"The King's Speech"

I agree. I saw it Friday and thought it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. I want to see it again and I will have to own it when it comes out on DVD.

It has finally made it to our local theaters. I am going to try to sneak over and see it when the kids go back to school. It looks real good.

why is it so good? what did you like about it?

:worship: Colin Firth is channeling King George VI, to start with. He and Geoffery Rush(the speech therapist) have fabulous rapport. Helena Bonham-Carter is positively regal as the Queen. Watching the King struggle with his speech is acutely painful, I have to warn you. There are some VERY funny parts, some bad words, and some very poignant stuff. I knew that Geo.VI was a reluctant king, but I never knew why. You just want to reach out and give the poor guy a hug.

Not in the movie, but I recalled hearing the wartime speech that George gave when his war cabinet was advising that he and the family leave the country for the duration of the war. He and the Queen not only stayed, but kept their children with them. I thought *that* showed patriotism. But now that i know how he struggled to speak, I am just completely awestruck at the courage and character of this man.

I just got back from seeing it. I agree with everyone a great movie. One of the best ever.

DH and I both loved it also. The acting is superior on every level and if Colin Firth doesn't get an academy award, I will be amazed.

DH and I saw it last week and we really enjoyed it. I thought Helena Bonham Carter did an amazing job as well as Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. :thumbsup2

It was phenomenal! Loved it! Pleasently surprised with Helena Bonham Carter. I kept picturing her as the Queen Mum!

I loved it too! It was really a part of history I knew very little about. I had always heard the other bothers side, but never King Georges side. I really believed Colin Firth had a stammer. You could just see the hurt and embarrassment in his face.

The true story itself is so inspiring and the movie itself is fabulous. I too would like to see it again.

GREAT to see your post and glad finally out! I saw it last September at the Toronto Film Festival and have been touting it ever since ... a great one!

(and I think Best Picture winner)

I liked it too, though I could have enjoyed it more without the two Chatty Cathys sitting behind me who chose every poignant moment to go "Awwww."

Firth definitely deserves an Oscar nomination. Bonham Carter didn't do much for me, mostly because she didn't attempt the actual accent. Kudos also to the lady who played Queen Mary.

I've not seen it yet, but wouldn't the "actual accent" be her native tongue?

The Queen Mother was Scottish. I don't think she had a thick accent, but she didn't have a purely English aristocratic accent, either.

Wonderful film, I've been touting it to everyone I know! But then again, I'd pay to see/hear Colin Firth read the phone book!

Queen Colleen

And that probably matters most to those in the British Isles. I can pretty much guarantee you that the average American couldn't tell the difference between English aristocrat, Scottish aristocrat, and Australian or South African of any kind. Most of us think Audrey Hepburn had the last word on spoken English.:rotfl:
