The "I Didn't Have To Cook For 8 Days" DDP review ... 10/13 - 10/20

Those are great reviews! I am very intrigued by the Tuna Oscar, sounds like a great dish. We will eat at Kona before the Pirate & Princess Party in February. Do you remember when you were finished with your meal? I would like to know when I can count on being back in the MK after the meal at Kona.

Flossbolna,

We were seated at 5:00 at Kona and we were through the turnstyles at the MK around 6:30. That time also included our having to change into our costumes before we left the Poly. We took the Monorail to the MK, which wasn't as much fun as the boats, but a lot faster.

We also told our server that we were going to MNSSHP, so although we did not rush through our meal, we never had to wait around for something to eat.

Does this help?

Thanks a lot! Yes, it does help. Our ADR is for 5:20 (trying to get this changed to 5 pm) and Wishes will be at 6:45 pm. I just would be very sad if I was still sitting at Kona at that time, not being able to see Wishes. So far my plan is to head to the beach of the Poly after dinner to see Wishes and then hop on a boat or the monorail.

If you can't get the time changed, you can always try showing up early and see if you can be seated early. We did this a few times on our trip and it was never a problem.

:cheer2: QuiltyMom’s Tip of the Day :cheer2: If Disney Studios closes at 7:30 and you're staying to see Fantasmic, you’ll have limited choices of what to eat for dinner, so check out your options early on in the day!

This information is *very* helpful, thank you! We're doing CRT for lunch one day and plan on doing Fantasmic that night. I was thinking of just grabbing a CS at the park for dinner, but now I'm thinking that perhaps it would work better just to get a late afternoon snack and eat at the resort CS after we return.

Really enjoying your reviews! Can't wait to hear about your experience at Chefs de France, I'm still on the fence about this place for our upcoming Christmas trip.

Great TR. By the way on the Barq's root beer. I read a month or so ago that they took the Caffiene out of that drink. just a FYI.:)

I can't wait to hear about Chefs de France either - we'll be eating there for the first time on our upcoming trip. :cool1:

A question about the soup at Kona (I already forgot the name of it... :headache: ) I noticed the word "Curried" in the name - is it spicy?

Thank you! I'll try to get that review up soon, but to give y'all a hint - we had a fantastic time there and the food and service was superb.

YES!!!! :woohoo: I was getting awfully tired of drinking Sprite or Fanta. I just love root beer! Thanks for the news. :thumbsup2

A question about the soup at Kona (I already forgot the name of it... :headache: ) I noticed the word "Curried" in the name - is it spicy?

The soup was not spicy at all, as in hot and spicy. It had a wonderful blend of flavors, mixing the coconut and curry together nicely. But the flavor just popped out. Wow - it was good. I want some now!

I'm still waiting for the recipe...

I just discoverd your reviews and wanted to let you know I am enjoying them!:thumbsup2 You did a much better job at remembering to take pics than I did. I also love that you scanned in the menus.

Still waiting patiently for the Chefs de France review (I know, I know, I'm so impatient really :rotfl: )

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

I know that I said this would be a report on Chefs de France, but I forgot I was trying to do these reviews in order. So, it will be next - I promise! I had this one ready so I thought that I'd just post it in the meantime.

Some of the photos are not the best quality since they were taken from waterproof disposable cameras. So, you’ll have to use your imaginations a bit when you look at some of the pics!

Thursday meant a day at Typhoon Lagoon. We had not been to a Disney water park before, so this day was a very exciting for us all. I honestly think that the kids were more excited about going there than any other park.

217748226-M.jpg

The one downside was that there were only two places at Typhoon Lagoon which participated in the DDP or to use room charge - Leaning Palms and Typhoon Tilly’s. I wonder why this is? It would be so much easier if people could charge everything on their KTTW cards or use the DDP instead of having to lug cash around with you all day long.

So going there I was not too happy that we would not be able to use our snack credits on the mini doughnuts. I had heard so much about the mini doughnuts here on the DIS that I was hoping we'd find the time to get some, albeit paying cash. I kept this in the back of my mind when we arrived. I never keep doughnuts in the house because I have no willpower when it comes to junk food. :rolleyes1

We got in at least one run on every water slide in the park before deciding it was time to eat. It was now 12:30 and I was sure that we'd get stuck in huge lines, seeing that there were only two places to get our meals. I told Handsome that although we were camped out near Typhoon Tilly’s, I had decided we would eat at Leaning Palms. Why?

Time for True Confessions....

I have a few food junk food weaknesses. One of these sinful treats are chili cheese dogs, loaded down with onions with lots of mustard slapped on for good measure. And guess which place served this luscious treat? You got it. Leaning Palms. Handsome really didn't care where we ate just as long as he got some food, so off we went in search of Leaning Palms. We followed a path alongside of Castaway Creek, which the kids wanted to go on after our meal. After a few wrong turns and having to ask for directions more times than we should've needed to, we arrived.

215526108-L.jpg

No, the photo is not crooked. :)

Considering it was the height of the lunch hour, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the lines were not bad at all - about 2 or three people deep. While we were getting the food, the kids decided that they would entertain themselves by squirting water from outboard motors onto the innocent people passing by in Castaway Creek.

222751868-M.jpg

So, guess what I got? :teeth: Oh, was it good! I slapped a bit of mustard on it, and I was good to go. Having a cup of fries thrown into the measure put me into junk food heaven! Only I should have asked for extra onions. You can’t have too many fresh onions on a chili cheese dog. I got a orange soda to split with Handsome.

Buddy Boy got the hot dog with applesauce and jello, with apple juice to drink. I loved the way the kids meals came in buckets with shovels. A very convenient thing to do.

215526171-M-1.jpg

Sweetie Girl got the grilled cheese pretzel. I always wondered what this would be like. Is it a pretzel stuffed with cheese and grilled? Or what? Yeah, I filled my pre-trip days with very intelligent thoughts. But it ended up being just want it says: a pretzel cut in half, sandwiched with cheese in between and grilled. She loved it – what a fun meal to have. She got carrots and jello as her two sides.

Handsome got the Mediterranean Tuna Salad and a water to drink later on in the day. (Those are my fries in the photo - I forgot to put them in the other photo.) His salad looked good and he liked it a lot, but I must admit that I really didn't pay much attention to it. I was having too much fun enjoying my dog!

I just asked him what was in it, but since it's been a month he really couldn't remember. After looking at the photo he said that it was kind of like a Greek salad with tomatoes, feta cheese, carrots & maybe some broccoli along with the tuna. It was huge.

215526149-M-1.jpg

Sweetie Girl took off right after eating so she could play in the sand with her new bucket & shovel. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time to play since we were on a tight schedule that day. We had to leave by 3:00 so we could make our 5:00 ADR at Chefs de France. So, being mean parents we made our kids eat their dessert.

The nice thing about here is that the kids really get a good deal here. Not only do they get their meal with two sides and a drink, they also get a full-sized dessert! They let you come back for your ice cream after you’ve had a chance to eat your meal so it won’t melt all over the place beforehand.

We didn't know what the kids would want for dessert, so when Handsome placed the order they said to just order anything, then when we returned for them we could get whatever we wanted. That was nice!

Here were the treats we had: one Mickey premium bar (that was mine), one Mickey (shaped) ice cream sandwich (Sweetie Girl), a Minnie Frozen Strawberry bar (Handsome) and an Itzakadoozie (Buddy Boy).

I didn’t get a chance to photograph the treats since when everyone else was eating theirs, a very gracious CM who was helping me with a swimsuit malfunction. Thankfully it broke while I was in the ladies’ room and not while on a slide. :scared: Now, wouldn’t that have been embarrassing!

After lunch we grabbed the pails and headed over to Castaway Creek. We grabbed some tubes to travel back to where our stuff was stashed and to enjoy the rest of our time there.

222751826-M.jpg

222751733-M.jpg

We never got to eat those mini doughnuts, though, even though we did pass by the booth. They looked good and smelled heavenly, but with all of the eating we had been doing so far that week, we really didn't have any more room to spare. So in the long run it didn’t really matter about the DDP/room charge thing at all. Who had time to eat when there was so much fun stuff to do there?

We were having so much fun at Typhoon Lagoon that I was very tempted to cancel our dinner reservations, but we didn't. I really wanted to eat at Chefs that night.

Maybe next time if we’re not on DDP we’ll be more adventurous in our eating. But we were happy with what we had. And we will also spend an entire day at Typhoon Lagoon, no matter what!

Next: Chefs de France - Really!

Great review we never went to TL but we did go to BB 3 times and we thought the food there was good too, the girls loved how they could get a bag of chips instead of fries!

that pretzel grilled cheese looks interesting. I wouldn't mind trying that.

I have always wanted to go to France. Watching Ratatouille just made me want to go even more. Silly, but true. So I ignored all of the bad reviews of Chef de France and booked a 6:00 ADR for Thursday, right after we spent the day at Typhoon Lagoon.

Which, in retrospect, I shouldn’t have done. We didn’t want to leave Typhoon Lagoon AT ALL! Sweetie Girl started to cry when it was time to go, but I’ll get into all of that when I write my trip report in case you want to know how it turned out.

One of the things that I had done for my kids was to have envelopes for them to open each day of our trip. Inside was invitations to each special event or meal that we would be attending that day. So once again, I had a mix up on what time our ADR was for. The invitation said 5:00, but it didn't seen right to me. I kept thinking that I should’ve gotten a printout from the resort of all my ADRs after I checked into the resort, but chose not to since I already had them in my daily touring plan schedules. Not a smart thing to do. I had completely forgotten that I had another list with ADRs in my trip binder.

Sometimes I have to wonder about my brain.

So we rushed home from Typhoon Lagoon, caught the bus to Epcot, and arrived at Chefs de France just before 5:00 to check in.

215524426-M-1.jpg

Only our name was not on the list for 5:00. Oops. Not at 5:30, either. Hummm. How long ago did we make our ADR? 180 days. The CM was gracious enough to say she could fit us in at 5:00. See, I had also forgotten my ADR#, too. Then I remembered, was it 6:00? Yes, it was, but 5:00 would still be fine to eat. I was glad, because the natives were getting restless and were whining about being hungry. Again.

You would think that they never ate at all during our trip. They seemed to be hungry all of the time, especially about a half hour after we had just eaten a meal. Does anyone else have this problem with their kids? It’s the “I’m too full” when they can’t finish their meal, followed by the “I’m hungry” about 10 minutes later when there’s no food in sight?

I took a few sneak peeks into the restaurant before we were seated. I was too excited to sit down and wait.

224408751-L-1.jpg

The acrobat Serveur Amusant (I believe - please correct me if I'm wrong!) was performing as we were checking in, and when I came out I just missed him doing his handstand on top of his chair. Silly me had the camera on the incorrect setting, and then when I had fixed it, he was already done. Oh well. It was awfully scary looking!

224407159-M-1.jpg
224408035-M-1.jpg

They do not hand out buzzing coaters here, so once you check in you must stay within earshot, for they call out your name very gently from just outside of the front door. I almost missed it, and we were just sitting down at the fountain right outside the check-in podium.

215524439-M.jpg

We were one of the first families to be seated, so the restaurant was nice an empty to look at while we figured out what to get for dinner. I just sat there and took in the atmosphere for a bit.

215524800-M.jpg

224408882-L-1.jpg

We choose to splurge and get some Perrier instead of regular water for this meal, and it was a nice change from the tap water we had been having so far all week long. (For some reason, the restaurant water seemed to taste better than what you got from a drinking fountain. Maybe I was just imagining things because I was always so thirsty!) Here it is with the bread they served.

215524815-L-1.jpg

The kids had a cute Ratatouille menu that turned into a hat. Here’s Buddy Boy modeling his kid’s menu:

215524667-M-1.jpg

Heres' the kid's menu:

225369899-L.jpg

For starters, the kids both got the Friand au Fromage - Cheese puff pastry. They don’t like salad, the only other option. I don’t think we would’ve ordered an appetizer for them if we were not on the DDP.

224408860-M.jpg

They didn’t eat all of this, most likely because it was very rich. Handsome tried it and liked it. But Buddy Boy ate the grape tomatoes. He won’t eat tomatoes unless they’re grape sized. He says that the seeds are smaller in them. I’ll let you figure that one out for yourselves.

Handsome got the onion soup, Soupe a l'oignon gratinee. This was g-o-o-d. Lots of cheese to make it nice and chewy. Just the way I like it.

215524901-M.jpg

I ordered the best appetizer on the menu, Ratatouille et calamars, sauce tomate - Fried calamari and ratatouille, spicy tomato sauce:

224408954-M.jpg

Oh, my.

I love calamari and will order it any chance that I get. Let me give it to you straight – this appetizer would’ve made me happy as a clam if I didn’t have anything else to eat the rest of the evening. It was sooooo good.

It was Tuna Oscar good!

The calamari was fresh and tender (it’s like chewing rubber if it’s not!), and the flavors were a bit spicy, but not overpowering. Hands down, this was my second favorite dish of the trip, second only to Tuna Oscar.

Yum, yum, yum.

Handsome said he had never seen ratatouille presented that way. Then I realized that he had never seen Ratatouille, for it's sort of the way Remy prepares the meal. Sort of.

I had a hard time deciding what to have for my main course. I had mulled over the menu for months, then they had to add new things! So, on a whim I ordered the lamb shank with navy beans:

224409043-M.jpg

I should never order things on a whim.

I don’t know why I ordered this. I like lamb, but rack of lamb. And I’m not a huge fan of navy beans, unless they are in a soup. So what was I thinking when I ordered this dish that night? I have no clue. It just looked good at that moment, I guess. I think I was trying to be different.

It didn’t work out this time.

It’s not that this dish wasn’t good – for it was. After one bite I knew that it was not the dish for me. It was yummy, rich in flavor, but I wanted something else instead. I just didn’t know what that something else was. So I ate the meat and carrots, and left the rest untouched. I really hated wasting all of that food.

I guess nothing would've satisfied me after that appetizer.

Handsome had the Filet de boeuf grille, sauce au poivre noir Gratin Dauphinois et haricots verts - Grilled tenderloin of beef with a black pepper sauce original potato gratin of Savoy and green beans. I was thinking of ordering this, but I didn’t want another steak. It was good, but not as good as the steak at Le Cellier. I don’t think that anything could’ve matched that steak at Le Cellier. The potatoes were yummy but very rich. And the beans were good – fresh and steamed to perfection.

224409040-M.jpg

We each ordered a glass of the wine that was pared with each dish.

Buddy Boy ordered the Croquette de Boeuf en Brioche - Ground beef steaks in a brioche bun, served with French fries. It’s a very fancy way to say “hamburger”, isn’t it? And it also won the prize for the best presentation of a hamburger in WDW.

224408960-M.jpg

Sweetie Girl the Blanc de Poulet aux Nouilles - Breaded chicken strips served with pasta (that’s pasta sauce in the bowl to the left of her plate.)

215525008-M.jpg

For dessert, the kids chose the Biscuit au chocolat - Chocolate chip cookie. Handsome had split it in two and Sweetie Girl had eaten a chunk of it before I had the chance to snap the photo, but it was about the size of the plate, minus an inch. They had the other cookie the next day for a snack.

224408483-M.jpg

Handsome ordered the Clafoutis bleuets, sorbet et coulis aux fruits Rouges - blueberry clafoutis, with red berry sauce and sorbet. For some reason the description doesn’t seem to match the photo (I’m going from menus posted on AllEarsNet. If it's not the right thing, I'll change it later.)

224409090-M.jpg

Have you noticed how he always gets the dessert made with fruit? In his mind, he thinks fruit IS dessert, and if it’s not made with or without sugar, all the better. I disagree on this point.

He doesn’t agree with the chocolate rule – it isn’t dessert unless it’s chocolate!

I got the Tarte au chocolat, banane et noix de coco, sauce pralinee - Chocolate tart with banana and coconut, praline sauce with chocolate ice cream, a REAL dessert. I’m not a big banana-in-my-dessert kind of person, but the banana taste was very slight. This was good and not overly-rich tasting like many desserts can be, but I was so full that I had a hard time enjoying it.

224409082-M.jpg
.

I think that everything tasted better here because the dishes are written in French. Oui?

Honestly, I don’t know what all the bad hype over this restaurant is all about. I was thrilled that we had a chance to eat there. Contrary to what I have read here on the DIS, everyone at Chefs was pleasant and gracious, from the hostess to our waitress and everyone else in between. Plus, I got my chance to eat in “Paris” for one evening. I couldn't see any reason not to like the place.

Will we eat there again? Yes, but only after we try the many other restaurants in the World Showcase that we want to try. So many restaurants, so little time!

After dinner we went to see Impressions de France on Buddy Boy’s request. It was a good idea since we needed to sit and let all of that yummy food settle in our tummies a bit. Yet watching the film only me want to go to France even more! Oh well. Someday my free boatload of money will come in…

We then strolled over to Canada to complete our evening by seeing a concert by Off Kilter before heading back to the resort.

215525069-L.jpg

It was the perfect way to end a glorious day.
