The Hyena Chat thread: Everyone's welcome!

We smile graciously, say thank you and run out the door. Collapsing in the car in a fit of giggles.

Aren't those just the best moments in life...when you act like a kid again? DH and I were getting disapproving glances from our kids at DS's open house. We sat in the back row of the bleachers holding hands and snickering at the principal. Every couple of minutes he was on the microphone telling everyone to PLEASE come get cookies, they apparently ordered 10 bazillion of them and they were going to go to waste if they weren't eaten. Obviously they were not real good cookies, but the more he kept encouraging, the larger the throng of 9-11yo boys stampeded to the cookie table (including our son!).:lmao:

There is nothing more fun in life than giggling.:thumbsup2 Which of course reminds me of another story...last week as DH and I were laying in bed watching tv, I rolled over and the 2 remote controls laying between us on the comforter sort of popped up. Which reminded me of Mexican Jumping Beans. So I was making them pop up and called them Mexican Jumping Remotes (why limit it to beans?:confused3 ). Then I started giggling, then laughing hysterically, then tears were rolling down my face...now mind you it wasn't that funny. But DH started laughing at me laughing so hard. The next morning DD asked what was so funny that she could hear me laughing clear on the other end of the house. Of course we told her the story, but she didn't even crack a smile...obviously not funny to her. Which of course got me laughing again. It's just a big vicious cycle!:rotfl:

Isn't that great!

I was out shopping wiht my sis today, darn her she keeps getting the $10 off $10 JcPenney coupons-- I haven't got a single one this year - grr. Anyway, she got it in her head to find something for our mom. My mom buys the tightest most unflattering clothes she can find- I swear it's her mission to stuff her legs into elastic spandex pants to make them into sauages..

anyway..

I'm picking out things I would like (mom and I are close in size and similar coloring) , then I started getting bored and made comments about some of the clothes.

There was a turtleneck with the big slouchy bit of fabric in front. Crazy old lady print style.

I pulled the peice of fabric up and said "look we can cover our faces to hide in this hideous shirt! woo hooooo!! " :lmao:

my sis stops, stares at me. Shakes her head ala Dizzy style :sad2: " we do NOT have the same taste in clothes" and walks away.

:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

I was just dying, trying hard not to laugh too much. :rotfl2:

I think I told you we got DD a credit card. It is on our account, but had a card issued in her name. Sometimes she needs money or to put gas in the car and it's convenient. She does know that she is only to use it for gas or other pre-approved purchases. If she wants something else she has to call for permission.

So yesterday I get a call at lunch time...MOM, we are at Famous Footwear and I found the most perfect shoes. Can I use the Visa? So I ask how much. ONLY $40! OK, so what I buy clearance shoes for $5 so my DD can have $40 shoes. Anway she's so excited so I tell her yes. When she walks into my office last night I about died. I swear they are the world's ugliest shoes. They are Roxy black and white houndstooth loafers. This style, only in houndstooth fabric. BLEECH!! Geez, if I knew she liked ugly shoes I could have picked her up a pair off the clearance rack for $2.

Yesterday I went to Walmart and had $48 worth of coupons, so my $72 grocery bill only cost me $24.

Now I had heard horror stories about Walmart & coupons, so was prepared for a battle. But my cashier was very nice, some wouldn't scan and she punched them right in and then congratulated me on saving so much. No manager required. She said her sister is one of those Coupon Queens. So I stopped at customer service on the way out and told them she was an excellent employee and I appreciated her good service even though I had a ton of coupons.:thumbsup2

:yay: :yay: AWESOME!! :woohoo: :woohoo:

Love finding like minded people that understnad how coupons "work". I had a great interaction with a cashier at CVS once. They were out of something that I wanted, it would have generated a high value ECB.

She asked "did you find everything" and I told her no but that's okay. She knew right away the deal I was trying to do. She instead gave me the value of the ECB off my purchase. :goodvibes

Found out later, she was part of my yahoo bargain group. :cutie:

 Not one for loafers, but I love those Rocket Dog brand shoes. I look at them and sigh, they don't have any support and are truly not a functional shoe.. but darn they look cute!

Guess I'm lucky we don't have CVS around here or I would probably have to buy a new house to store all my free stuff.

I hate when you get a cashier that questions every single coupon. I always hand over the coupons BEFORE they start ringing up. That way if they want to look at them first they can. I even fill in the freebie prices for them. Most of the stores I go to I have my "preferred" cashiers and the ones I know to stay away from.

Last weekend at Fred Meyer I had a cashier that didn't understand their coupons. Freddie's has Bonus Coupons, Store Coupons and then you can use Mfg. coupons. I had a Bonus Coupon for 30% off all Men's apparel, a store coupon for Buy 2 packages of socks, get 1 package free. The poor girl was totally messed up and kept telling me I couldn't use 2 coupons. Most of the items I had used 2 or 3 coupons. It even said on the Store Coupon...can be used WITH a bonus coupon. Finally I made her call someone over.

She messed up on one coupon and gave me another 30% off a clearance shirt (coupon said not good on clearance items), so I got a really cute sweater for $3.42. It was regular $39, marked down to $19, another 60% off the $19 for an extra clearance markdown, then I got 30% off that.:cheer2:

Now I remember why I liked couponing so much. So fun to get free or practically free stuff.

 ummm Alison? Was that you or your alter ego, Red Neck Alison. :rotfl:

Guess that wuz me!:lmao: So where is everybody tonite?? Just caught the last 4 minutes of Breast Cancer Diaries on Discovery Channel. It's a very good show if you get a chance watch it.:thumbsup2 I have seen it before, but was very happy to see an update at the end that she has now been cancer free for 4 years. It just breaks my heart to see women with young children diagnosed. I can handle a lot of things, but I just have trouble with that.

My goodness! Our thread has been so quiet! I keep missing you guys when you're online :(

I'm glad that tomorrow is Friday. :yay: I'm interested in seeing what costumes my co-workers will wear (if they do dress up). I don't know if I will wear my stitch hat and gloves again. I don't know where I put them but I think they are in one of the cupboards in the garage. :confused3

I went to Target real quick after work. I only went in to buy Journey To the Center of the Earth on DVD. Then I went to Michael's where I score on a cute basket, 2 rolls of ribbon for making bookmarks and such and I only paid $4 for it all. :thumbsup2 They are having a sale right now which is really cool. I also got a coupon at the checkout which is good for 40% off one item from Nov. 2nd to the 6th. :)

I went to Cost Plus World Market again and I made a basket for my bf's mom. She recently moved to a new house and I got her a house warming gift. I hope she likes it and I plan to give it to her when I see her this weekend. My bf and I were invited over for a family BBQ. It should be fun :goodvibes

Here are pics of the basket I put together:

Nice Pix!!!

Good morning ladies and Albort!

So I'm going to share with you my cooking experience I had the other night.

I decided to make the bread pudding that they serve at Ohana's at WDW. Had it for dessert while we were there, and it was yummy.

So I'm making the caramel sauce for the topping. At the end of cooking it, you are suppose to add a cup of rum and some vanilla. While it is still boiling you light the rum to burn off the alcohol. So I light it with long lighter, and it makes a nice little flame. But after a little bit, the flame grows bigger and bigger. The flame got so big that tips of the flame was hitting my hood. :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: Remember, I have to keep it boiling. So I'm thinking yikes! I grab some baking soda, and kind of keep my eye on it. Finally after it seemed like forever, it died down. Whew!

Next time I'm using a bigger pan!!!

In the end, it was well worth it. It is down right delicious!!!! Yummy!!!

I did that once!

Only I wasn't making bread pudding... and whatever I was making wasn't supposed to catch on fire... :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :rotfl2:

Glad yours was supposed to flambe, and turned out so well! :thumbsup2

Well, we've had a fun-filled day. DS8 has the day off from school, so we took DS4 to preschool together. The preschool allowed the kids to dress in costume today, so DS put on his Yu-Gi-Oh costume and plastic "wig". We walked into the classroom and the kids were all sooooo cute! Minnie Mouse, a couple of Snow Whites, a rooster, a Red Power Ranger, Dracula, Captain Hook, a Seahawk (football player) and more. Totally adorable! I remembered to bring my camera and snapped a few pics before leaving. :lovestruc

DS8 and I had planned WEEKS AGO to walk through a local corn maze this morning; however, since it's been raining off and on (mostly ON) for the past few days, and was pouring while we talked this morning, he decided he did NOT want to do that. So we went to Starbucks to think what to do from here. We only had about 2.5 hours of freedom, think fast!!!

DS8 asked if we could go to Toys R Us, because he had several gift cards burning a hole in his pocket, and he wanted to get a specific Lego set that was pretty pricey. We returned home briefly to grab the gift cards (I also grabbed his Barnes & Noble card since it's on the way) and we drove to TRU.

They conveniently had the Legos right inside the door, so he quickly found one he wanted. They also had Halloween stuff there as well for half off, so I ran through the stuff and picked out a couple light-up necklaces and a couple books.

When we checked out I was annoyed to find out that the "ALL HALLOWEEN 50% OFF" does not apply to the books, but since DS had already seen them and really wanted to get them, I still bought them. :headache:

We were in and out within 10 minutes, so on to Barnes and Noble we went! DS found TONS of books he wanted to get, so had to whittle them down to $30 worth, the amount on his card. :rotfl:

I found the CUTEST Halloween booked based on Good Night, Moon, which I used to read to the boys when they were younger. It's called Good Night, Goon, and follows the same rhythmic sound patterning as the original book, only it's hilariously spooked up. I think DS4 will love it! :lovestruc

As we exited the bookstore we still had nearly an hour before we needed to pick up the munchkin. DS8 asked, "Mama, when is lunchtime?" just as I realized I was starving. I asked if he was hungry enough to eat lunch yet, and he said yes, so we hit up a Red Robin nearby. YUMMMMMM!!!

We dashed to pick up DS4 after that, then ran down to Blockbuster to pick out some movies. DS8 remembered then that he'd left his retainer at Red Robin, so back there we went. :sad2:

We were very fortunate that they HAD it, the busboy joked, "Yeah, I tried it on but it didn't fit, so I threw it out." The greeter who'd asked about it blanched, "You tried it on???" until she saw that he was laughing at her. :lmao:

So now we're home. DS8 is watching a new Scooby Doo movie that just came out on DVD. Who knows what DS4 is up to; I should go check. He's been a bit of a troll since we picked him up, so I suspect he's tired today. And so am I!!! Mama needs a nap! :rotfl:

WELL. I went ALL over Target today, trying to to find Mikalah some purple makeup for tonight.. Only to give up... come home.. and realize I had some here. :lmao: AND... I stole some candy at Target. I suck.. What can I say? :lmao:

I couldnt help it. I got all distracted when i was buying Mikalah the new Tinkerbell movie.. The checker lady kept going on and ON about how much she just loved Tinkerbell... I told her it was for the baby for Christmas.. and the women would NOT shut up. Oh well.. I got distracted. :lmao: I realized it out at the car. It was on sale... So I dont feel TOO bad. :lmao: Anyhoo.. at least I got a start on shopping for Mikalah. If Christmas was tomorrow, Alex would get a PSP, a case for it, and a big ole power rangers Megatron. Mikalah would get a Tinkerbell movie. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Who's glad it isnt tomorrow? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

On a happy note.. I saw my mom on Tuesday, and she said my butt looks smaller. :thumbsup2 I guess I am redistributing well. :rotfl2:

She got us some of the COOLEST stuff on her trip. :thumbsup2 She got Alex a postal card thing from the Vatican.. Wish she would have gotten ME something from the Vatican. not that I am terribly religious, (I AM Catholic... whos surprised??:lmao: ) But still.. The history of that place. DANG. How cool. It is on my list of top ten things to do before I die.

AND... She bought us a Turkish rug. Surprisingly enough.. Even my husband gets the Turkish rug thing. She is having it shipped, I cant wait to see it. Though... Where the heck am I going to put it? I am NOT sticking something like that on the floor where my beastly children can get to it.

AND... A hand blown Venetian vase.. Again, having it shipped. Again.. What the heck am I going to do with it? OMG.. Thank goodness it is small. Maybe I can wrap it up really well and stick it in the top of my closet.

I'd gladly hold onto those for you... :rolleyes1

Oh, wait... then MY beastly children would destroy them, and I'd have to pay you back... Never mind.

Sounds like your mom had quite a trip! That's awesome. :thumbsup2
And what fun for you to get these neat goodies! :yay:

I'd also love to go to Europe someday, including Vatican City. I think we Americans, particularly those in the west, don't have as rich a sense of history, of living among history, living in/surrounded by buildings that existed for centuries.

I was baptized Catholic and went to catechism and first communion, but do not consider myself Catholic today. Still, other church services I've attended since then just seem oddly casual by comparison; people wearing shorts and flip-flops or jeans. And ministers who are just regular people, with regular-people type problems like divorce and affairs and such.

Sooooo wouldn't have happened with the small-town old-school Catholic church of my youth! We still had ladies that insisted on wearing a veil to church and eating fish on Fridays, and part of the service was in Latin. We had one older, fire-and-brimstone type priest who scared the daylights out of me, always going on about sin and Hell. The other, younger priest was a real sweetie that all the kids adored. We jokingly called him "Father Fish", I think his real last name was Scales. :)

I remember a college professor of mine lamenting when mass was changed to all English (was it Vatican II?) He dearly missed the Latin mass. I've heard that is becoming more common again, people are asking for it. Interesting, isn't it?

Yep, Vatican II is where the rules changed for Latin sevice and looser rules for the clergy as well.
I had a fascination with Catholicism for awhile, my mom was raised as a devout Catholic.

Mom went to a public school but they had church values in a small farming town.. nearly everyone was a member of the local church. She had to wear dresses everyday to school, on Fridays they were allowed to wear pants.. well her mom wouldn't allow that.. so she would wear pants under her skirt (for winter to keep warm), got to school and took off the skirt on Fridays. Her one act of rebellion as the eldest girl of 10 children. :lmao:

Once a week they all had religious education during the school day, mass and catechism.

As good Irish and English Catholics, the family was very proud of those who answered "the call" and chose to be a nun or priest. There were quite a few in the family history.
The other careers of choice among the women were teaching and nursing. Not surprising that I gravitated toward both fields. :goodvibes

Lucky Megan to get a turkish rug ! Depending on the size, you could use it as a wall hanging. Similar to hanging up quilts.
