The "How did I pull this one out of my hat?" TR - NEW! Updated 9/24

Love the PTR so far, your trip next year sounds like ours in Nov. except we only have our kids going. We are trying to keep the fact that MIL/FIL/SIL are coming too a secret from kids and it gets harder all the time.

Can't wait for more...

Oh wow! I am sorry you surprise wasn't as magical as you'd hoped it would be! At the kids your age are, I think it'd be fun either way, surprising them or letting them plan!! At least you've still got a good bit of time to figure it out!! :)

Kedesha,

You will be at POP just before us, we arrive on 11/29.

Looks like you picked the right TR to pimp your PTR on......I came over from Charleston Princess's. Great start to your report!

Who's in charge of organizing the 17 ppl group trip? Bless you for being able to go with all those different people....I wouldn't be able to do it....I would feel like I was missing so much so I understand your reasoning for this summer's trip.

I think I agree with you about surprising the kids....I think it might work for certain kids and younger kids. It's a big trip just to spring on kids....we mentally prepare for it so why shouldn't they? Let us know how that turns out.

Looking forward to more :surfweb:

Thanks for finding me! I guess I will be in charge of planning the 17 person trip, but I will mostly just be handing out info to everyone so they can plan their own days! I am not tackling that beast!

17 people!!?? Yikes! That will be quite an interesting TR when the time comes! ;)

I have never been able to keep a surprise from the kids -- I always want them to be as enthusiastic as I am while we countdown!

On the flip side, I read all these great stories about surprising the kids and that sounds like fun too! Decisions, decisions! :goodvibes

It scares me sometimes to think about this trip, but it is going to be fun in a lot of ways. I have 2 nieces (ages 5 and 3) and 2 nephews (ages 7 and 6) that have never been to Disney before, so seeing it for the first time with them will be so fun!
The surprise thing is killing me! I want to tell them, but I don't want them "bragging" about it to their friends the rest of the summer either!

Just looking at your report and comments. You remind me of myself. Your husband will learn to like Disney more after each trip. Mine did and my girls never outgrew it, though I used that excuse for several years to convince my husband "it may be our last chance." We finally joined the DVC last year with the intentions of going at least every other year as a family and I plan on bringing my nieces/nephews as well. Ya'll are precious. Have fun and enjoy the Disney Magic! It just keeps getting better and better.

I hope you are right! He really does love it, he just thinks there are other places to enjoy a vacation :confused3 I'm pretty sure my kids are hooked. My 8 yr old DS is already saying that he wants to get married there, he thought it was so cool that the GF had the wedding chapel!

That whole surprise thing is a tricky little bugger... we're giving it a whirl with our DS5 at the end of August. We went last September (which he knew about the moment we booked) and we've talking about Disney and asking him his opinions on things at home because he thinks we're discussing a trip that's 2 years away, so that's made it a TON easier. I couldn't imagine not being able to make any plans in front of him! I just hope and pray that it doesn't backfire on us and he's truly excited to go!!

I hope your surprise works out for you! I guess you just never know, and you have to hit it at the right time, and give them enough information so they can understand what is going on! LOL

Okay, you got another reader!

We have surprised our children in the past and there are pros and cons. For me, I liked sharing the planning process with them and I am so scatterbrained I would slip up and tell!! Of course, when they are small, a surprise trip does take away that "How much longer until we go, Mommy?!?"

Welcome! You need to let me in on the specifics of your surprises! I want to make sure it works if we do it!

I'm reading...don't stop!:goodvibes We're going on our first trip this Sept., I love to see how the planning process is done. Silly me when I made our ressies I had NO clue just how involved it would end up being.......I however am not complaining I'm loving my new obsession!:rotfl:

You have a precious family and I can't wait to read more! By the way, what time would we have to leave POR in order to make it to MK for the opening? I think my little ones, and me would love to see that!

Thanks for saying my family is precious! That word gives me the warm fuzzies! LOL I think planning the trip is almost as much fun as being there....well not as much fun.....but you know what I mean! There is nothing wrong with having to think about Disney on a daily basis!

As for how long it takes to get to MK from POR, my trusty "Unofficial Guide
" says to allow 29-39 minutes for bus transportation from POR to MK. So I would say to get to the bus stop an hour before opening, and you should be safe!

I will give you all the details on our trip, so maybe you will gain some knowledge on what TO DO and what NOT TO DO with that large of a group! LOL I am looking forward to our Sunday evening dinners at the IL's house, so we can all plan together!

Ok, well, we are still discussing the surprise option of this trip. I keep running things over and over in my mind, so that part is still on hold for now.

Let's move on to something that is at least somewhat set in stone, the DINING!

Last year when we planned our vacation, I did everything backwards! I booked our dining, then tried to decide which parks to visit on which days. That worked out OK until I decided to join TGM, and he told me that I chosen all wrong! I had to call back, and make changes, and things just didn't work out as well as I would have liked!

Not going to make that same mistake again! So, off to TGM I went to pick out where we were going each day! You saw the results of that earlier in the report!

The other thing I wanted to do this time was to try places that we haven't tried before. DH requested Chef Mickey's:worship: (it was his favorite last year), and try as I might, there was NOTHING available for our whole trip!

We have eaten with Cindy in the castle both for breakfast and dinner, and while they are wonderful experiences, you really have to wait a long time to be seated! Takes up a big chunk of your day!

My favorite meal from our last trip was O'hana, and even it was booked up!

So, on to all new places for us! :moped:

Here is what we (read that I) decided upon:

Sunday - Dinner at 50's Prime Time CafeI have always heard this is fun, and even when the server isn't into it, the food always gets good reviews!

Monday - Lunch at Princess Storybook in Norway at Epcot. I know Allie is going to LOVE this lunch! I thought about scheduling something different for the boys with their Dad, but I didn't think that Daddy would want to miss his little girl with the princesses!

Tuesday - I have always wanted to try the food at The Liberty Tree Tavern, so we are doing this for lunch. I know there are no characters there for lunch, but hopefully this will mean we won't have to spend a lot of time there!

We have also booked a dinner at The Whispering Canyon for this night. I have never gotten to see The Wilderness Lodge other than once on the boat over to the campground. I am really looking forward to this!

Wednesday - We have scheduled a dinner at Tutto Italia in Epcot for this night. We wanted to eat there our last trip, but we thought it would be closed for refurbishments. It actually was open while we were there, but we didn't know that until we actually walked up to the restaurant! We had reservations somewhere else by that time, so we didn't get to try it. Italian is DH's favorite food, so he is looking forward to this one!

Thursday is our last day, and we will be out of table service credits by this point, so it will be on our own!:scared1: I'm not sure where we are going to eat this day.....we may just wing it!

There are so many dining options at Disney, it is almost overwhelming! I wish I could try them all....maybe one day I will have gotten to.

I feel like this was a boring update, but one that is mandatory! Everyone wants to know where you are going to eat while you are there! LOL

OMG, I just noticed that we are under 2 months until we leave! I need to do myself a daily countdown chart on the computer, so at least I can know exactly how many days! LOL

I just counted it up, and there are exactly 60 days until we leave for our trip, and 62 until we arrive at Disney! :cool1:  :cool1:

60 days??? That is right around the corner! :cool1: Not that you want to wish summer away but still... :yay:

Your ADR's look great. Yum!!

All those ADRs look good -- we have never eaten at any of those places so I will look forward to your reviews!!! Well, we've eaten in Norway for breakfast, but not lunch!

Yay for 60 days!

You hit the nail on the head! I am torn between DYING for it get here, and not wanting to wish my summer away! I feel so spoiled because we have another vacation to the beach planned for July 26-Aug 2, and even looking forward to that feels like wishing my summer away.

We have the next month that will be full of youth baseball, which we LOVE, so I want to enjoy every minute of that. Then we can enjoy our vacations before starting another school year!

I am getting a little worried about the menu at Norway for lunch.....we might have to re-think that! Since we are staying at the GF, I could try for a dinner at 1900 Park Fare and she could at least see Cinderella AND Prince Charming (which would be a first). Hmmm, decisions, decisions!!

Ok, now that I have been thinking about our trip for a while now, I have a couple more dilemmas that need resolving.

Well, the first dilemma, I have pretty much resolved in my head, I just need to make it happen.

The first dilemma was deciding whether or not we would be needing Hopper tickets. I never even entertained the idea of not needing them until I read someone's report on here. I wasn't even sure how much extra it was costing me to have the Hoppers! I did some calculating, and it was about $250!!

A quick survey of my days planned, and I realized that out of my 5 park days, only 2 of them were even scheduled as a "hopping" day, and one of those I had possible planned to go to DTD. I mentioned it to Dh, and said NO right away, until I explained it all to him. Then he was in agreement.

So, we are taking off the hopper option from our trip.

Making this decision causes dilemma #2, we have to change an ADR. We have an ADR on Wednesday at Tutto Italia......Monday is our Epcot Day......that won't work. I have no plans as of yet for what I want to do there, so that one is still up in the air.

Now, dilemma #3. Our plans for right now involve staying in Savannah at my uncles condo for Friday and Saturday nights, and getting up early Sunday morning to drive to Orlando. Google maps says it takes 4.5 hours, but I am adding an hour to that just to be safe. So, even if we get up at leave at 5 am, we probably won't be arriving at DHS until 12 or 1.

This is just too late for my taste. Especially with the new Toy Story Mania ride. I am not waiting in no 2 hour line for ANYTHING! I hate showing up there, hoping that there are fast passes left for this ride! :scared1:

So, now I am toying with driving down to Orlando on Saturday, and finding a place to stay for that night. We have lots of family that lives in/near Orlando, but I don't want to impose on anyone! I thought about getting a room at POP, but then I realized that we have a family of 5, and that won't work (even though my DD still sleeps with us, so we have no problems FITTING in one of those rooms). Mousesavers sent out an email for a room at Royal Plaza for $89.

This is another thing that is going to require some thought!

Lastly, I will leave you with a picture from our last trip. I always like trip reports with pictures, so here is one of us on our last trip:

Looking through my photos, I don't think I realized how cute this picture turned out!

I think it's wise to drive down on Saturday and start your vacation fresh on Sunday morning.
Using Fuzzy Disney Math we can use the $250 savings from not hopping to pay for Saturday night's hotel and dinner. Plus you won't be wasting a 1/2 day of park tickets on Sunday.
Maybe an Orlando area hotel with a fun pool complex would be fun for the kids on Saturday night.

I Just started reading Pre-trip reports trying to get ideas on how to do them. I am really enjoying your report, I.m getting good ideas from your. Thank you !! Your family is beatiful.

I love me some "Fuzzy Disney Math", that totally makes sense to me!! I will have to use the argument that we won't be wasting a half a day of park tickets! I am off to do some research!

Thanks for joining in! I was a little hesitant to start one myself, especially after the first few days and I had ZERO responses! I was just about to hang it up when a few people finally found me! Thanks for the compliment about my family! I think my youngest DS still has eyeliner around his eyes in that picture from dressing up as a pirate for MNSSHP the night before! :lmao:

I am in too. GF would be so handy for trips to MK... are there buses to EPCOT or do you have to take the Monorail and transfer.

As for the surprise... I doubt I will do that again... it would have been far more fun to have Hannah as a planner than crying the morning we left.

Good meals!

We enjoyed the Park Fare meal last trip and Whispering Canyon too!

Well, I keep hoping for ways to shave some $$ of the cost of this trip, but things just don't want to go my way!!

I saw the codes that were released today, so I thought I should at least call and give them a try. Not really working for me! Nothing that would apply to what we already have. I hung up, and hung my head.

Then, I thought, well maybe if I switched resorts, and gave up "free" dining we might save a little money. Called back again, nothing at a moderate was available, and the other Deluxes were just going to cost me more.

I tried the Expedia website, and I found a room at The Yacht Club for a reasonable price, and after paying for park tickets, it wasn't too bad of a deal. But, we would be giving up free dining, and in the long run, it would probably have ended up costing us more.

I guess someone just wants us to stay at the GF! I can't really argue with that someone, that's for sure!

I have been slowly, but surely dragging the kids back into Disney mode, without them even realizing it! We pulled out all of their pin lanyards yesterday, and they were admiring their collections. Cal started collecting pirates on our last trip, and he ended up finding some really cool looking ones by the end of the week. Casey is collecting ride pins. He spent a lot of time last trip finding the perfect Expedition Everest pin to add to his collection. Allie, of course, has mostly princesses on her lanyard. She looks so sweet with it around her neck!

That, of course, let to the pulling out of the autograph books from last trip. I tried to get crafty and let them make their own books before the last trip, and I must say, they turned out pretty awesome! I am not sure if we will make new ones for this trip, or just try to fill up the empty pages in the ones from last time. I guess if I keep it a surprise, they will be using the old ones again! LOL If I convince them they only need to get the autographs we missed last time, it will make our character meet and greets much shorter! The stress of having every character sign three books sometimes gets old. This way, we could focus on getting better pictures!

My next goal is to pull out our videos from last trip. Can you believe we have never watched them? I taped the entire fireworks from MNSSHP, and they were amazing! I want to watch the tape just to see those again! I dont' even remember what else we taped so they should be fun to watch!

I can't even hardly watch the videos from our first trip. It reminds me WAY too much how much my boys have grown up. That trip was 6 years, and what feels like a lifetime ago. They were so sweet and cute on that trip.....makes me cry just thinking about it.

Around here, life has been day in, day out baseball around here. We have had a game every day (except Monday) since last Friday, and our next day off won't be until this coming Monday! Don't get me wrong, I do love watching my boys play baseball, but all these games put a damper on the ole "summer fun" with the "no swimming on game day" rule! We might have to bend that rule some, we can't go the rest of the summer not swimming!

I guess I should hit the hay. I couldn't fall alseep last night until almost 4 am! I don't want that to happen again tonight.....does not make for a nice Mommy in the morning!

Well, I called and changed our park tickets to non-hoppers, so now I have to make a few changes to my itinerary!

I have two separate itineraries in mind. I will list them both out, and then any input anyone could give would be awesome!!

First option:
Sunday - DHS - I think the only negative about trying this is if we arrive later than planned, it could really affect our day since we will need to get fastpasses for TSM first, and if the return time is late, then we won't be able to get fastpasses for anything else!

Monday - Epcot - All day here with a break in between.

Tuesday - Magic Kingdom

Wednesday - Animal Kingdom - This is EMH evening here, and we took advantage of this last year and had a great time. I feel like it is hard to get AK all done in one day, but with the added hours we could probably do it. No break today? :scared1:

Thursday - Magic Kingdom - Since we are staying at the GF, this is the perfect place for our last day. I also hate not having MK be the last park I see before we leave!

Second Option (Not to spill the secrets of TGM, but this option really strays from his recommendations!):

Sunday - Magic Kingdom - This is an EMH night here, so even if we arrive late, we could still get a nice full day in here.

Monday - Hollywood Studios - We could get an early start here, and if we get a good rest in the middle of the day, we could come back for the EMH at night. I don't know how crowded it gets here for EMH, but it might be worth it.

Tuesday - Animal Kingdom - Looks like a great day to be here!

Wednesday - Epcot - Not too bad here today either!

Thursday - Magic Kingdom again. This would really break up our Magic Kingdom days, and we could start our vacation here and end it here! I think this would be perfect! The only drawback is that this is an EMH morning here, and with us trying to pack up and leave, we might have trouble getting there early! I guess depending on what we get done the first day, we could just relax and hit our faves here. Or maybe dh or I could get up early to get them to the park, and the other could finish packing before joining us? We will see!

Well, what does everyone think? Which one of these plans would you choose? Of course, either way I am going to be changing some meals! That may not turn out well, and may have an impact on what changes I can make to the park days!

No matter what, I am having so much fun planning all of this!!

I'm a little weary about going against TGM, but I like the 2nd itinerary better. Starting and ending your trip at the MK is a great idea to me by itself! Plus you'll have 2 days at MK, so you won't have to worry about trying to cram everything into that first day (it might make your drive down more relaxing too, since you won't have to rush as much worrying about getting to TSM). Since you may be arriving a little late your 1st day, you'll cut down on travel time between your hotel and the park since the GF is so close to MK. It also sounds like you really want to ride TSM, so going the 2nd day ensures that you can get up early and not stand in a 3 hour line!

UGH...I checked your dates on both UG touring plans and TGM....now I know why you wanted to hop .

Just a note here: you can get new fastpasses 2 hours from the time you picked them up even if the return time is much later

Monday - Epcot - All day here with a break in between.

If you stay for EMH I would really take a break.....or at the very least have a long lunch in the AC.

Thursday - Magic Kingdom - Since we are staying at the GF, this is the perfect place for our last day. I also hate not having MK be the last park I see before we leave!

I would switch Wednesday and Thursday....go to MK on Wednesday and Epcot on Thursday. If you can't make it for rope drop for the EMH morning at MK then you are going to be behind the crowd all day.

Well, what does everyone think? Which one of these plans would you choose? Of course, either way I am going to be changing some meals! That may not turn out well, and may have an impact on what changes I can make to the park days!

Good Luck! and I still think you should drive down Saturday if you can since it's such a short week

Hello!!

You are absolutely right that traveling with a big group is NOT the same as traveling with your own immediate family. We have gone to WDW with a group twice now. We weren't thrilled the first time, but just to make sure, we did it again. Definitely better NOT in a group! :rotfl:

The whole resorts/codes thing will drive you to drink. Just take the GF and be at peace! :flower3:

We were at WDW Aug. 14-23 last year, and the PM EMH crowds at MK were staggering. We couldn't get through the crowds to do anything, so we left without going on a single ride. That was a night that we just went over after dinner - it wasn't really a planned thing. I have NEVER seen MK that packed. Just something to keep in mind.

Well, after making about 10 different plans, and calling Dining reservations a few times, I think I have everything in order!

My thought about starting and finishing our trip at the MK sounded great, but with both days being EMH days, I didn't think that would really work out all that great, soooo, here is what we have decided to do!

Sunday - arrival day - (still trying to decide whether to get a room for Saturday night, or drive down Sunday morning) Magic Kingdom - Even if we don't get there early, it will be the easiest park for us to get to, and after a morning of driving, this will be nice! I had reservations for 50's Prime Time for this night, so that got cancelled! I was able to get a table at O'hana at 5:25 pm for this night:cheer2: . The boys and I ate here last trip, but dh was too tired, so he and Allie stayed in the room. We LOVED it, and I knew he would too, so I was really happy to get this ressie! MK has EMH this night, so we might give those a shot as well. You never know, we may get lucky with a light crowd?

Monday - Epcot - This was our Epcot day on the original plan, so I actually had an ADR for this day. It is lunch in Norway, which I'm not sure about the food, but this is our only Character Meal for the whole week, and I hated to lose it for Allie. I tried to switch to breakfast, but no luck. I also tried to get us something for dinner this night in Epcot.....NOTHING! Everything was booked up! That is a little scary!:scared1: By getting rid of the hopper option, we are going to have to cancel our dinner ressie at Tutto Italia for later in the week as well........but I may keep trying to see if things open up!

Tuesday - Magic Kingdom - This was one of only 2 "green" days at this park while we are there, so today is it for us! I already have lunch at LTT booked, also BBB for Allie, so I didn't have to make any changes to have this day be MK. We have dinner ressie at WCC for 8:30, and I am hoping to at least be on our way back to MK to see Wishes this night! I'm sure we will see it on Sunday as well, but I LOVE these fireworks and catching them twice would be a bonus!

Wednesday - Hollywood Studios - This is probably our least favorite park (although I did a survey of the family yesterday, and my oldest DS did list this park as his #1:confused3 ) Anyway, my plan for this day will be to hit the favorites, more than once, and everything else is gravy. Last trip we spent a big chunk of time at the Playhouse Disney LIVE! show, and another big chunk at LMA!, we won't do either of those this trip, so there is a few hours freed up! Also, I have NO ADR's here! I tried, but everything was booked for lunch AND dinner! But Casey informed me that we HAVE to eat at Pizza Planet, it is a tradition. :thumbsup2 I can handle that. So the plan may include a morning here, head back to the hotel for lunch and a break, then back to the park for the evening, dinner at pizza planet and stay for Fantasmic! We missed this last time, and I am NOT doing that again!

Thursday - Animal Kingdom - DH's favorite park! Not so much for the rides, but for the theming. He just likes walking around looking at everything! My goal for the day is watching Flights of Wonder! I have missed this every trip, and I want to catch it this time. We are only doing the Nemo show if we can squeeze in right before the show starts. Last trip, we stood in line, then had to sit inside for a good 20 minutes before the show even started! Allie was not pleased, and those benches are killer on the back when you have a squirmy 4 yo on your lap! No ADR's this day either! Not sure what we will do about this.

Well, there you have it. This plan works well with all of TGM's suggestions (except for Sunday), so we should have a nice week. We haven't left any time for Downtown Disney, so if we are feeling frisky we could head over there Thursday before we start heading home! You just never know how the kids are going to be holding up.

As for surprising the kids, it is absolutely killing me not to tell them! We were all having breakfast together on Sunday morning, and it was such a nice little family time, I almost broke down and told them right then and there!

We pulled out the videos from the last trip yesterday, and the first thing on there was the B&theB show at MGM. The boys were so bummed that they are going to have to wait until next May to go back ;). Casey started saying he wants to go this summer, with a pouty look on his face. I told him to start working on his Dad! :rotfl:

I have almost cancelled due to poor behavior a few times though. I don't know if everyone who has kids the ages of 10 and 8 are like this, but my boys think that since it is summer they need to have someone spend the night every night! DH is not so much into the spending the night, especially on nights when he has to work the next day. When they ask, and we say no, they act very ugly (pouting, kicking the ground, crying). It is frustrating to me that they seem so ungrateful for the things we DO do for them! It's like it is never enough. It makes me wonder how truly grateful they will be for this trip. Does that matter? How grateful are most kids this age? Maybe they won't realize how grateful they should be until they are grown up and realize what all we do for them? Now I am rambling. Let me know if my kids are normal, or am I raising a couple of monsters???

Until next ti
me.....
