I also just returned from Pop.
I requested not to be in the 50's section as I have asthma and the smoke bothers me. I also did the online check in. When I arrived I was given my KTTW cards and the other paperwork and found out that I was put in the 50's section. I told the CM that I couldn't stay there as I would have to go through two smoking areas to get inside the building to the food court. The CM showed me a route that would make it so I didn't have to go through the smoking areas. So off I went to our room at about 8:30am. My niece was able to sleep through the power washing of the building, I however could not.
After walking the route a few times and finding multiple people smoking wherever they pleased, I requested a room change. I was then told they had a room over in the 70's section and would send someone with new KTTW cards and a luggage cart to transfer our stuff. As we were walking the "safe" non-smoking route, I came across a smoker causing me to have an asthma attack. I had to leave the CM/LS person and go through the food court to avoid the smoking area right outside the main door. I couldn't even tell him what I was doing, I had to jester with my hands as to what I was doing.
I have to say that Pop has turned into the smokers resort. I have stayed here for the past 3 years for 2 weeks at a time and I have never seen so many smokers smoke wherever they want. I could add all the people on the previous two trips at both the resort and in the parks that I saw smoking in non-smoking areas and times it by 5 and still not come close to the # of people this year at Pop who were smoking in non-smoking areas.
I also had a second asthma attack at DHS. Leaving the park at night is the worst part for me as there is bound to be a smoker who has to have a cigarette while exiting the park. Unfortunately, I couldn't get away as the smoker went past me in a scooter and by the time I tried to turn around with the stroller I was hitting the mass of people trying to get to the bus stop. While I was coughing and trying to breathe a second smoker walked right past me with a cigarette.
My mom smokes, and I don't think she really knew what it was like until about 4 years ago when she choked on a piece of steak. Since then she has tried much harder to not smoke near me. She has now even made the front yard where everyone has to smoke. This summer she saw how far away she could be outside and how fast I had an attack. I was holding my nephew and was trying hard not to drop him while coughing.
I just hope that posting this will make some people think. Would you like it if I take some purfume and decide I need to spray it while lining up for the bus? I and others would like to not have smoke on us while we go line up for the bus.
