It could depend on which building you get. In the 60's building, the difference between preferred and standard is literally which way you exit from the elevator bank (i.e., whether you turn left or right). I can't speak for the other buildings, but having seen the difference in the '60's, I'd never pay extra for preferred.
If you know which standard room numbers would be best to request in the 60's bldg. for the closest location to the main bldg.? TIA!

Any room in the 60's is really the closest you can get. I stayed in a standard room that was the 3rd from the last. It was still very close to Classic Hall.

Sandgrace, there are two 60's buildings. I'm quite sure in both buildings, the rooms that face the pool (poolside) are preferred, and all the other rooms are standard.

If you look at the preferred room map linked on page 1, you can find the actual room numbers. Don't be confused by the x's indicated on the map. All rooms at Pop are numbered like this: first digit is the building number, second digit is the floor number (those are the x's), and the third and fourth digits represent the room number. So using my room number from last year as an example, we had # 4457. We were in building 4 (Play-Doh), on the fourth floor and in room number 57.

I'm not kidding when I tell you that preferred rooms there meant turning one way or the other out of the elevator bank. Turn this way and you were on the walkway for the poolside rooms (preferred). Turn that way and you were on the walkway for the lakeside rooms (standard).

Sandgrace, we loved our room in the '60's, but one consideration is whether you'll be using a vehicle. Because the 60's buildings are in the middle of the resort, they are not near any parking lot.

As great as I thought the view from outside our room was, it wasn't convenient to my brother's van. This year, he has asked to be in a room closer to a parking lot. I just don't know what to choose in that case and have asked him to look at the map and tell us where he wants to stay.

Thanks so much for all of the info on the room numbers! :goodvibes We're hoping for a room on the first floor since we will have our DD4 with us, and with the stroller and all the 1st floor will be easier. I realize that we could hear more noise that way, but we'll be so tired from spending time at the parks I'm sure we won't hear much noise.

Oh no! I wasn't thinking about being close to the parking, we will have a vehicle either a rental or one borrowed from my BIL. We really aren't sure how much we'll be using the vehicle to get around to the parks tho, it just depends how the buses are. We haven't been to DW in over 5 years, and never with our DD4. Last time my DH and visited DW we stayed at AK and I remember that the buses were kind of a pain waiting for, and of course AK was way out there too.

Also, hauling all of our luggage and stuff to the room might be easier if we're closer to the parking lot. Hmmmm, I'm not sure which would be better to be closer to the hall or parking lot.

It was out first time at Pop also. We LOVED it. We had a split stay with 3 nights at Pop and 6 at WL. We loved Pop so much that we left WL to go back to Pop!

That's great to hear! :thumbsup2 We were a little worried about staying at a value but since we're going during free dining and we'll never be in the room anyway we decided to give POP a try. Plus, I'm sure that our DD4 will enjoy the theming there.

Hauling all your luggage in/out of the room is no problem at all. They have nice, big luggage carts. Bell Services took my brother's driver's license as "collateral" for the cart and returned it when he brought the cart back. We could have survived a nuclear winter on all the stuff he packed onto that cart (and stored in the room :scared: ).

The parking lot warning is for those who will be using a vehicle most of the time. If you're planning on using the buses most of the time, it's a non-issue.

I am sure it's been asked a million times but here it goes: Is it worth the extra money to stay preferred room at Pop? I know everyone's opinion will vary but I would love to hear from you:thumbsup2

We did the peffered room and yes we got a frist floor room, that was nice at night but I would have to say no I would not. Walking Is not a big deal for us and its just a elevator ride, dont even need to walk the satirs. But every one Is diffrent and you have to weigh the diffrences.

Thanks everyone for your input on whether to go the preferred room route or not!! I just can not make up my mind:confused3 We usually get a preferred room and I guess I really want justification this time:lmao:

I wouldn't pay for a preferred room.

Our room was in the 80's section and it was less than a 2 minute walk to the bus stop.

For anyone who has stayed in the 50's and/or 80's, between the two, which would you recommend? I could care less about how close the resort is to the main building. A 7 minute walk isnt going to kill me. At the speed I walk, I could probably make it in 4. :rotfl: Anyway, these are my two favorite era's in real life, so I'd like to try and request one of the two. I've been trying for about a week to figure out which one is better, or whatever, but with no luck.

How are the 50's & 80's rooms themed? :wizard:

Which one has a better view? And, should I request a "Lake View" or a "Courtyard View"?

Thanks!

And really, out of all the decades, which one is the best? (Feels most like its era) :3dglasses

There isn't really a tremendous difference in the rooms. The only difference is in the comforter patter, the border at the top of the wall. and the picture on the wall. Honestly, if you weren't looking closely, you wouldn't even notice the difference.

Here is a picture of our room in the 80s:
