The Fratt house Takes on the World! - Sept 2012 PTR

Just joining in your entertaining report:happytv:

So awesome that you got Ohana and LeCellier so close to your trip!!

I managed to get an Ohana res for 10 a couple of weeks ago for my trip next month too, couldn't believe it!!! I swear they hold some back til closer to the end cuz this happened a couple of years ago when I went with BFF, I got a res about a month before hand.

It's exciting watch you plan your trip so close to your date:hourglass!! It's virtually unheard of for us OCDisers. The Poly looks beautiful and I'm sure you'll have a great trip, and yes, please give some info on the NOJ, as there is not much info out there on this:thumbsup2

Thanks so much for joining in! It looks like you have quite the trip coming up - teenage kids and in-laws! Definitely time for me to stop whining about having my hands full with a one-year-old:)

That's awesome you got a reservation for 10 at Ohana! I'm so excited about this reservation, so I can't imagine the fun you will be having with a table full with three generations of family. So awesome!

Can't wait to read your PTR! We had sort of planned to take a trip with our in laws next spring when they had a conference in WDW, but it kind of fell through. I'm trying to talk my husband into rescheduling something with his parents next year, though, so I can't wait to hear how your trip turns out!

Glad you were able to get Le (freakin') Celllier and Ohana!

Joining in!!!

We went on our 1st trip with a 1.5yo and 2.5yo.....looking back now I think we were a little on the crazy side, but they did fine (we drove, with 2-6mo olds, and 5 other people, in 1 car, so that whole trip was a little crazy).

15 days, ya’ll. 15 days. Lots to do, and not a lot of time! So let’s get going, shall we?

I know I promised must-do’s, but if you’ve been reading along, you’ve probably figured out by now that I have no follow-through. So I’m going to talk about something totally different. About 75% of my readership (i.e. three of the four people reading this silly PTR) have indicated they would like to hear more about Night of Joy. In my attempt to be the most accommodating and helpful trip-report writer I can be, I’ve decided to share my thoughts, opinions, and experiences with all of you. If you would like to extend your gratitude, I accept payment in the form of Disney gift cards and mickey rice krispy treats. Thanks in advance.:rotfl:

If you’re not familiar with Night of Joy, it is an event that celebrates Christian music. It is held at Disney on the second weekend in September each year. In this entry, I’ll talk a little about the event itself, but I will also mention how it would affect your visit if you were vacationing but not attending NOJ. So even if you have no interest in this event, there still be some relevant and helpful info.

The event is currently held at the magic kingdom, although three years ago it was at Hollywood Studios. I much preferred it at MK, and I think the Disney folks agreed since this is the third year in a row they have kept it at that location. They have three stages set up throughout the park – one directly in front of Cinderella’s castle, and two in tomorrowland. One was by the entrance to the People Mover, and one was kind of in the back of the park over by Space Mountain. At least that’s how it was set up two years ago – no guarantees that they’ll keep it the same. From 7:30 – 12:30 (or thereabouts) they will have bands performing at all times on these stages. In my experience, they have a really great lineup of artist – “A-listers” as they’re known in the industry. And I think they try to get a good variety as well, from contemporary, to rap, to heavy metal. No Southern Gospel, though. Sorry for any of you SG fans out there….Anyways, in my experience, they’ve been really good shows. I mean, you know Disney. Everything they do, they do well. So it’s great staging, lighting, sound, special effects. One special note – it is standing room only. This may be obvious, but in case it’s not I want you to be prepared! The stages are all outside, and there are no chairs set up. People just wander in and out watching the performances.

So here’s the positives: Great artist and Great shows. You get the opportunity to see many different artist in one place. And you get to watch them at Disney World! We all know how magical the castle is – now imagine having that as the backdrop to a concert by some of your favorite Christian bands. It’s cool. For us Disney Lovers, it’s pretty much the best environment you could imagine for a concert.

There’s a lot of energy. The people there are big fans of Christian music, and they’re excited to be there. I don’t know if you’ve every been to a dead concert, but having an engaged and enthusiastic audience really does make a big difference. You don’t have to worry about that here.

You can explore MK. Wander around, see the beautiful sights, take in the magic. There’s plenty of places to go if you need a break from the noise of the concerts.

The negatives: Ok, I’m just going to say it: youth groups. They probably equate to the Brazilian touring groups in the summer. Now I love teenagers – I think they are so much fun to be around! But when you get a whole bunch of them together, in an environment like NOJ with concerts and music and sugar to hype them up, it just turns up the obnoxiousness dial to maximum power. It’s a little (maybe a lot) overwhelming. They’re loud, oblivious, and sometimes inconsiderate. (please note: this is not to say all teenagers are this way. I know a whole lot of very respectful, intelligent, witty teenagers who I love and respect dearly. Please do not feel like I am talking about you, your child, your neice/nephew/grandchild/neighbor’s sister’s cousin’s brother. I am just talking about the overall environment of the event.)

The crowds. This event is crowded, ya’ll. Come for the concerts and to look around MK – but don’t expect to ride anything! I made the mistake on our first trip of thinking that we would experience Hollywood Studios during the evenings when we were there for NOJ and didn’t set aside any additional time for this park. BIG MISTAKE! The rides were over an hour long for any attraction (and I don’t think they were offering Fast Pass during the NOJ event times), and just trying to walk anywhere was a challenge. I ended up really not liking HS as a result of this experience. We did go back the next year and I had a better experience, but the scars remain. It is still my least favorite park of them all.

Closures at the park: now it may be this way at all after-hours parties (MNSSHP, MVMCP), I haven’t been to any of the other events to know. But I felt like there were very limited park-related activities open during the event. I think only 4 – 5 rides are open (and the lines are really really long), a few counter service restaurants, and maybe some shops. But don’t count on getting to experience all that MK has to offer during this event. The focus is the concerts. That should be why you go.

So overall, would I recommend it? Yes – if you know you will enjoy the concerts, the music, and the artist. It’s an extra-magical bonus to get to watch them in the surroundings of the Magic Kingdom. But if you are really just wanting to experience Disney World? Then no, I wouldn’t. Just go during the day when everything is less crowded and all the attractions are open.

Finally, what to expect at MK if you travel to WDW during this event (but aren’t actually going to NOJ). It won’t in anyway ruin your trip, but there are a few negatives you should be aware of. First, there will be a giant stage set up in front of the castle beginning on Friday. Not the end of the world, but if you’re hoping to get a picture of you and your family with the castle in the background (and who isn’t?), be sure not to plan on taking it on Friday or Saturday. I think they also may have the walkway through the castle blocked off during this time as well – not sure how you get to CRT – maybe just enter the backway through Fantasy land?

Second, the park closes at 7 pm on the nights of these events, so your evening hours are definitely shortened. In my experience, you can probably get everything done that you want to during the earlier hours because this is a super-slow time of year. But if there’s some attractions that you have your heart set on experiencing after dark (splash mountain or jungle cruise?), you may need to plan a different evening in the parks.

Finally, there are no night-time parades or fireworks shows on the nights of the event. This is why I’ve been to WDW twice and never seen Wishes. It’s definitely on my must-do’s for this year! So again, probably need to plan on spending a different evening at the MK.

So that’s my take on NOJ. I hope it was helpful, but please feel free to comment with any specific questions you may have about the event. I’m more than happy to help!!

Up next: must-do’s. For real this time.

Thanks for the NOJ info!!

Haha, as soon as I started reading it, I was thinking that our Youth Group would like it:rotfl2: I agree, even Youth group kids can be loud, oblivious, and inconsiderate. My own two teens belong to one of these group and do a great deal of good things for the community, however, in the end, they're still teenagers;) with all that comes with the territory:goodvibes.

I didn't realized they don't have parades or fireworks during these events!!
We've attended MNSSHP and MVMXP and most rides were open as well.

No fear: rambling's allowed when it's this entertaining. ;)

Favorite Park: Animal Kingdom (I know, I know. This is no one's favorite park.

That's actually the favorite park of my middle daughter's best friend -- meaning the first time we went to WDW (on a "Give A Day" ticket), there was much agony as middle daughter was forced to decide between the AK and the MK. :p

I should also mention that he is a borderline health nut. He never eats fried foods, fatty foods, and rarely eats dessert. His favorite meal is grilled chicken and steamed vegetables.

Do not let him anywhere near the WDW restaurants Recipe thread! I use cookbooks from the 1940s and '50s and regularly use butter and lard and all manner of evilness, and the recipes in that thread still make me wince sometimes. :sad2: And once in a while, after I've winced, I track down the ingredients and try the thing. :rolleyes1

And our first pixie dust - southwest gave me a credit for the difference in the ticket price, which I applied to my return ticket. So guess how much I had to pay for my return flight? $10.40. That’s right – by switching to the later flight, I was basically able to buy a round-trip ticket for only $10 more than my old one-way ticket..

I've hit against that going the other way -- drove back instead of flying, but got now discount because the one-way ticket was the same price as round trip. :sad1: Still love Southwest, though. ;)

When our kids were the age of your little one and we were looking at a long trip, I relied on two things; new (or not seen in a while) toys, and fingerplay. I'd cut their toys back to minimum a couple of months before we went, and then reintroduce stuff they hadn't had for a while, plus I'd get a couple of new things from Walmart or wherever -- colorful stuff they can play with while sitting, often advertised as good for traveling.

We did some fingerplay while at home, at the end of a meal or something -- Itsty Bitsy Spider and Here is the Church and one I can't remember where you walk up the child's arm -- but I had a much bigger repertoire for trips because my kids at that age would really get into them when there wasn't much else they went for. I think they liked it because it was both familiar and new, plus of course there's the touching and eye contact, which some of them liked. If your kid likes them at home they're likely to work on a trip, is my experience.

But when you get a whole bunch of them together, in an environment like NOJ with concerts and music and sugar to hype them up, it just turns up the obnoxiousness dial to maximum power.

Not to discount general teenage obliviousness, there's also the fact that some churches promote the thing as a "witness" opportunity, where they encourage the youth group members to invite kids from outside the church. The kids in the youth group may police each other, and if so their comments hold weight because they know they'll be seeing each other again, but kids who've been invited along feel no responsibility to the youth group and have no fear of any social repercussions if they act like a jerk. :sad2:

Got caught up on your PTR - so jealous that you're staying at the Poly! Rumor is that one day they're going to make it at DVC resort, so hopefully I'll get to try it eventaully :cool1:

I've been trying to switch our Kona ressie to 'Ohana...we ate there last year and I really want to go again - I'm hoping one will open up for the Sunday right after we arrive. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

BTW, your PTR is so entertaining! You have some good writing skills :thumbsup2

Hi and welcome! so glad to have you along - even though from here on out I have no idea where this silly report is headed!!

Sounds like you had a pretty intense trip - definitely TR worthy!!! I would love to know how you fit that many people in a car and made it to Disney without clobbering each other:) Oh the things we will do to go to WDW!

Thanks for the NOJ info!!

I'm sure your youth group would love NOJ! I seriously cannot tell you how many teenagers / youth groups are at this event - I would say they make up at least 70% of the attendees (I totally made that statistic up.....it's not based on anything besides my own observation. I just feel like I should put that disclaimer out there in case someone else quotes me later :)) Anyways - they all seem to be having a really good time! And I really hope I didn't offend anyone with my comments about youth groups - I work frequently with the YG at my church and I really love all those kids. They're teenagers - and it's ok for them to act like it, sometimes. Especially in environments that are pretty much geared for them (as NOJ is). But I did want people to be aware of what the environment of the event was like - lots and lots of teenagers, acting like teenagers:)

Also, I should have put this in my entry, but I checked and there are exactly 5 rides scheduled to be open during NOJ: The 3 Mtns, BLSRS, and PoC. There are no table service restaurants open, and most of main street is closed down as well. So apparently they treat it a little differently than the parties? It's too bad - there's definitely enough people there to have some more attractions open!

Hi and thanks for joining in! So glad you find my ramblings entertaining:)

I'm going to have to go look at the WDW Restaurants Recipes thread right away! No way that my husband will eat that stuff, but I enjoy an indulgence every now and then:) My husband does "encourage" (aka lecture, nag, dictate) that I try to eat a little more healthy (I feel that I should clarify that this because of his concern for my health, not a weight issue). So we don't usually get to snack and indulge at Disney. But one small advantage of him being at work stuff this trip is that I will have the opportunity to try lots of new things without him knowing:cool1: Does that make me dishonest? naah. Rebellious, maybe. But not dishonest:)

Thanks for the travel suggestions - I am writing them down in my handy dandy trip planning journal. And I will definitely add new, good-for-travelling toys whenever I get around to making a packing list (I know, I know - I should be way past that point by now. But I've got far more important things going on in my life right now. Like writing this PTR!)

I'm going to have to go look at the WDW Restaurants Recipes thread right away!

I knew I was going to regret not bothering to look the real name up! :p I meant this one:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1575103

It's supposed to be "official" recipes but here and there a "tastes like" recipe slips in. ;) There are some healthy things there, but then there are the ones I've gone looking for and decided not to try -- or actually printed out and lost my nerve when assembling the shopping list of all the decadence. :upsidedow

Probably not pertinent with your hubby, but once your little one's older I recommend being careful what you make. I've made a couple "just to see what it takes like" -- mostly desserts people rave about that I don't want to pay for because I'm pretty sure they're going to be too deadly for me -- and, while I'm usually right about what I won't like, the kids or hubby sometimes think that stuff is terrific and don't want to hear my, "That's so bad for you, eating it once in your life is sufficient" lecture. Actually, the lecture worked okay a time or two (only made Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake once), but eldest daughter didn't want to hear it when it came to the Butterfinger Cupcakes -- guess what she picked for her birthday "cake" this year?

But I've got far more important things going on in my life right now. Like writing this PTR!)

I share your priorities. It's amazing the projects I get finished the month before we go on a trip -- none of which have anything to do with the trip. :rolleyes1 Traveling is motivating, that's what. Just doesn't motivate me in the direction people think it ought to!

Wow - this looks pretty dangerous!!! Fortunately (well, most of the time it's unfortunately, but in this case it's fortunately) I'm not much of a cook, so I'll probably not have to exert too much control to keep these to a minimum:)

You're right about having DH around to keep the bad food consumption under control. DS has only had organic everything so far (my DH and I do not eat all organic, just DS, per DH's orders). We did splurge and let him try a chocolate cupcake at his first birthday party, but that was only after some serious arm twisting on my part (just to clarify - I was twisting DH's arm, not DS's arm. Please do not call social services on me. Thank you:)). So, yeah. Probably not going to be able keep too many of these indulgences around the house for much longer:) I guess I will enjoy it while I can!

I've been hearing the rumor that the Poly is next to get a DVC, just as soon as GF is done! You are so lucky to be a DVC member!

I will definitely keep my fingers crossed that you get an Ohana ADR! Someone else just posted that they were recently able to get a reservation next month for a party of 10 - so keep trying! I'm sending some of my pixie dust your way!:goodvibes

Just caught up on your PTR, and I loved it! :goodvibes Haha your son is adorable, and all the plans sounds fun! Poly is my dream resort! I stayed at Beach Club and it was uber nice, but next time I would LOVE to stay at the Poly :lovestruc

Thanks so much for joining in! We're pretty excited for our stay at the Poly, but think we want to try the Beach Club next time. There are just so many good places to stay at WDW! We are planning on taking some time this trip to at least go over to the Epcot resort area and have a look around the resorts. My DH (who hates talking Disney and has no opinions about anything) specifically requested that we check out these hotels. So it is definitely a must-do for this trip:)

I feel that I should give you a warning before I begin. Up until this point, I pretty much knew what I was going to write about before I began the entry.

Really? We would not have guessed that, Hannah. From our perspective, it was clear you had no idea what you were writing about throughout this entire PTR. If you knew what you were going to write about, why on earth have you been rambling so much???

Right . . . ummmmm. . . . .what I mean is, before I began the resort analysis, I had already decided to stay at the Poly. And before I began the ADR entry, I had already booked my ADR’s.

Tonight we are talking about Must Do’s, and I have to admit, I don’t even know what they are yet. So there is your fair warning: this has the potential to be one long, jumbled up, messy entry.

How is that any different than all of your other entries???

Right you are! And you’re still reading! So without further ado, let’s talk about Must Do’s!!!

Please don’t rhyme. This is not a Dr. Seuss book.

Sorry. I got carried away. But now that you mention it, that could be really fun!

A Day in the Magic Kingdom by Hannah
We’re going to Disney, and while we are there,
We’ll see Mickey and Minnie – they’re quite a pair!
We’ll ride Thunder Mountain, and Splash Mountain, too.
Then off to Space Mountain – that’s what we’ll do!
Next we will travel to Fantasy Land
And ride the new Dumbo, and then Peter Pan.
We’ll have dinner at Poly in Kona Café,
Then come back for Wishes. Oh, Wow - what a day!

Stop! STOP!!! Didn’t you hear us say “no rhyming”? Are we going to have to make this another official rule of the DIS?

No, no. No more rules. I’ll stop. Sheesh.

Ok – Back to business. Must Do’s.

Before I get to my actual list, a couple of things to keep in mind.
First, this is a work trip for my DH, which means for a good portion of the time, he will be away at conferences, meetings, and other various events. During the times that he’s working, it’s going to be just me and DS(1). Which means I won’t be able to ride any attractions that have height requirements (obviously can’t do rider swap if there’s no one else to watch DS while I go on the ride).

To further complicate matters, DH’s schedule is still not completed, so I really have no idea what days and times he’s going to be able to be with us. I’m pretty sure Wednesday evening and all day Sunday will be free, but other than that, it’s completely up in the air. To account for this, I’m creating two lists of Must Do’s for each park: one for when it is just me and DS, and one for things to add when DH is around.

Finally, I have no idea how DS is going to respond to characters. He might love them, and he might be terrified. So we’re going to have to wing it when it comes to meet and greets. If he seems to be into the characters, maybe we’ll add some in. If he’s scared, then obviously we’ll save them for a later trip.

Ok – I think I have officially drug out this intro to a length worthy of the rest of the PTR, so what are you waiting for? Let’s talk Must Do’s!

The number one must do for the entire trip is this: See Wishes. I’ve never seen it before.

What?!?!? You’ve been to Disney World twice and haven’t seen Wishes? You had a CASTLE VIEW ROOM at the Contemporary, and you haven’t seen Wishes? That’s unthinkable! It’s preposterous! It’s practically blasphemous!

You mean blasphe-mouse? I’ll give you a second to let that sink in…….

Groan, I know. But there are some of you out there who enjoy a good pun, so that was especially for you.

No, Hannah. None of us out here found that humorous. No more rhyming, and no more puns.

Alright, alright. I haven’t seen Wishes, so I’m making it my number one priority on this trip. Satisfied? Good. Let’s move on.

Magic Kingdom Must Do’s – DS & ME:
*represents first time on this attraction
Haunted Mansion (hoping DS is too little to be scared on this)
PhilharMagic (cracks me up every time)
Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin
It’s a Small World (I’m part of the crowd that enjoys this ride, and I’m pretty sure DS will love it. Lots of color, lots of light, lots of stimulation. We might even do this more than once)
Dumbo*
Winnie the Pooh
Monster’s Inc. Laugh Floor (this is one of my favorites. Sooo funny. Every time.)
Peter Pan (favorite of the dark rides)
Pirates of the Caribbean
People Mover
Jungle Cruise

Must Do’s with DH:
Space Mountain
Splash Mountain
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

We’ll have about a day and a half at MK, so I’m hoping this isn’t too ambitious. Crowds typically aren’t a problem, and most rides are walk-ons at this time of year. If not, we’ll just do what we can:)

Epcot With DS & ME:
Seas with Nemo & Friends
Spaceship Earth
Illuminations
All World Showcase Countries
Three Caballeros
Journey into Imagination*(just because I’ve never done this before)
Maelstrom
O Canada (c’mon. Who can resist Martin Short?)

With DH:
Soarin’
Mission Space (and seriously, c’mon. Who can resist Gary Senise?)

I think we’ll have one full day at Epcot, so this may be pushing it. We’ll see. Soooo disappointed Test Track will be under refurb. I’ve never ridden it and am really dying to check this off my list!

Animal Kingdom with DS & ME:
Festival of the Lion King
Finding Nemo
Kilimanjaro Safaris
It’s Tough to be a Bug

With DH:
Expedition Everest
Dinosaur

Hollywood Studios with DS & ME:
Toy Story Mania
Fantasmic
Beauty and the Beast
Voyage of the Little Mermaid
Muppet Vision

With DH:
Tower of Terror
Rock-N-Roller Coaster
Star Tours*

So that’s the must-do’s. And honestly, a lot of these aren’t even really “Must Do Them Or My Trip Will Be Ruined”. I guess it’s more like a “I’d like to do these” list. I’m trying to be laid back and not have my heart set on anything – you know, since we’ll have a baby with us and all. He might need to sleep. Or to eat. Or to take a break from all the stimulation. In which case, I will reluctantly and with a bad attitude pry myself away from the parks so that he can rest. Have I mentioned I’m already planning a solo trip? I am. In my mind. Because I think I’m going to need it after this trip is over.
I have not mentioned it to DH yet, so it's our secret for now, ok? Thank you.

Up next: I’m not sure. But I can guarantee it will be long, random, and will be laden with sarcasm. How’s that for a cliffhanger???

I liked your poem. :) But that blasphe-mouse pun... :sad2: I have a suspicion you're one of those "If you didn't groan, it wasn't good" punsters.

`
The number one must do for the entire trip is this: See Wishes. I’ve never seen it before.

I totally read that as: "Sea Wishes". I thought, "huh, I haven't heard of that -- sounds like it belongs at SeaWorld." ::yes::

I guess I've technically seen Wishes -- from the Poly beach. :p We're too cavalier about fireworks because we can see them all summer from home. But Wishes is the one thing left over from my last "must do" list. I'm hoping to get a reservation at the Desserts thingie to motivate me to actually get there next time.

O Canada (c’mon. Who can resist Martin Short?)

I can, when he's appearing in CircleVision.

I liked your poem. :) But that blasphe-mouse pun... :sad2: I have a suspicion you're one of those "If you didn't groan, it wasn't good" punsters.

Ha ha! I actually hate puns, and really don't ever find them funny. I have no idea what I was thinking when I typed my last update. I think i was really really tired....
