The Flat Adventures of Weird and Ninja

Mmm, potato-y goodness.

Glad Weird and Ninja enjoyed their fries, and their time at the retreat! Pix are great, as usual. :thumbsup2

I love the new flat pictures! It looks like they (and you guys) had a great time at the retreat.

And the SWT story was hilarious. :rotfl:

Is the pomme frites places in NYC? I want to go there so bad. I saw them on Unwrapped one time and it made me want them and then I went to Belgium and had real ones and now I really want some again after seeing your pictures! I don't think they had nearly as many toppings at the cart we went to, though.

Okie dokie, that was our retreat! I know Weird has more pictures so maybe he'll probably post them within the next few days *ahem, ahem* right? Thanks for tuning in! Hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend!

Sorry everybody for being MIA, I've just been so tired taking care of everything else that's going on in life, from the Coffeehouse to the Retreat to the Encore to thinking of Ninja ... :lovestruc But Ninja is right! I will be posting, hopefully either tonight or tomorrow morning at work since I will be alone in the office and I'll have some time to write up an entry! Stay tuned!

We all definitely had a great time at the retreat! Even though I was bummed at first about not being on the bus with Ninja, since it was because it would be more convenient for her dad, I was okay with it.

The Pomme Frites we went to is indeed in NYC. I had heard about the place a while ago from a supervisor of mine but it never came back up until Friday! I think Ninja and I are planning on going back there in the future and we'll be sure to post some more of the toppings then! Thanks for reading! thumbsup2

Those fries look really good. I love french fries!!!

The area around the retreat looks beautiful!

It definitely was awful to be standing for so long in that heat with no relief from the sun. Prince Caspian with air conditioning sounds so much better. What did you and the kids think of the movie?

The kids loved it. We all enjoyed ourselves.
My daughter has been a big fan of the Narnia movies, since her 2nd grade teacher read one of the books to the class.

Then as I was trying to put Weird to stand for another pose, he slipped and fell into a crack!

Glad you were able to rescue him!

we are taught to have a complete architecture, rather than what they have at Six Flags, just an object. Haha, sorry, went off on a tangent there but I just feel like Disney would do (and does, at least from what I hear from Ninja) a lot better.

I don't know anything about architecture, but I've been reading all about the design and the stories behind the different parts of the Disney parks, and it sounds very impressive. I guess they use something they call forced perspective to make some buildings look smaller, and others look larger. They have all sorts of authentic details - many I've never noticed, but will have to look for next time.

In the future, I'll have Ninja show a brief step-by-step of how clear stamps work. But basically they have a sticky back that stays on a sheet of plastic. Then you peel it off and stick it onto a clear block. It's easier to store because they share the same clear acryllic block. Plus, it's really easy to see that the entire stamp is inked properly and also easier to position the stamps because you can see right through it. You know exactly where it will go on the paper. It took me a little while to get used to working with clear stamps because it's still different than rubber, but I've gotten used to it and I like it. You can get an entire sheet of stamps for the price of one large wood mounted one.

I've never heard of clear stamps before. I haven't bought a stamp in a long time. That makes so much sense that it would be helpful to see through so you can tell what you are doing. And less storage space is always better!!!

Yep, Kathleen, you are correct! The Imagineers use forced perspective all over the place but the most noticeable one is on the castle. If you look closely, you'll see that the "bricks" from the bottom are larger than the ones from the top to make the castle appear taller. Don't get me wrong, the castle really is tall, but because the bricks get smaller as it gets higher, it appears even grander than it really is. Another interesting fact: Cinderella's castle lights up with 16.7 million colors at night. 16.7 million.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Since I can't remember where I left off, I'll pick up from a few at work! As some of you may know, I work in the Multi-Media department at my school. What does that mean exactly? I deal with equipment rentals, troubleshooting, maintenance, as well as DVD/VHS rentals and 16mm (remember those?) repair. Just a brief summary of my job, I sit around for most of the day, getting tasks and finishing them right away so I can continue to sit around "watching the office". I answer phones, I do some scheduling, pretty much a normal office job. Not a lot of excitement ... until Ninja and Weird came along!

Like I mentioned, I do film repair (splicing, sprocket damage, cleaning) but we're given the option of fixing whatever we want in the collection that hasn't been fixed. West Side Story, anyone?

IMG_0390.jpg

We also don't have a lot of Disney stuff so I've already watched just about everything Disney that we do have. Such as this ...

IMG_0389.jpg

But let's take it back a little bit and look at what else I deal with ... whoa, VHS?! Sidenote: I find it really sad that my kids will never know what HD-DVDs are since they have already lost the battle with Blu-ray.

IMG_0388.jpg

Let's take it back some more! Now I know for sure that my generation does not know about these; I only know because I work in this department. Who can remember Laser Discs? :woohoo:

IMG_0386.jpg

And since this is a more entertainment oriented entry, I have to ask, who else misses BATTLESTAR GALACTICA?! :guilty: Weird is a big fan of the show and he was very sad to see it end. I've watched it since the mini-series movie AND I own 2 seasons of the show. I know, there are probably bigger fans out there but I am still a student so I can't exactly spend all my money on 2.0 seasons and 2.5 seasons that cost the same thing! Oh Battlestar, how I miss you so ...

IMG_0508.jpg

Quick last thing before I post. Did anybody else see the sky in NY yesterday? It was AMAZING. I'm always amazed by the sky because it's definitely one of the most breath-taking creations from God. So I had to get a picture to share with Ninja since we haven't quite shared a sunset just yet. ;)

IMG_0900.jpg

Once again, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it! :goodvibes

I remember laser discs! We used them in grade school on occasion. They were the size of records. [Edit: Or at least close to it. Much larger than DVDs, anyway, and a lot more costly, even adjusting for inflation.]

And since I'm old enough to have seen the advent of DVDs, I recall that during freshman year of college, a friend of mine who had yet to be exposed to DVDs was surprised at my (then minuscule) collection, saying, "I thought the discs were larger than that." I realized later that she must have been thinking of laser discs.

Mmm, potato-y goodness.

Weird thought I was odd for making that potato-y goodness last for 3 separate occasions. Haha. Of course they tasted a LOT better the first day, but considering I can't eat a lot in one sitting, having them leftover was still great too!

I love the new flat pictures! It looks like they (and you guys) had a great time at the retreat.

We definitely did! Lately I've been having so many VMK urges. I just want to sign on and play! Aghhh ... this is what keeps me somewhat sane. Plus, it's fun, as I know you know since you've got Jack!

... to thinking of Ninja ... :lovestruc

Weird, are you flirting with me on DIS? ;)

Those fries look really good. I love french fries!!!

I've never heard of clear stamps before. I haven't bought a stamp in a long time. That makes so much sense that it would be helpful to see through so you can tell what you are doing. And less storage space is always better!!!

Haha, I'm bad. Sometimes I purposely order entrees if I know it'll come with french fries ...

Of course, they have tons of clear stamps now after I built up a fairly decent wood mounted collection! My boxes are so heavy! Clear ones are awesome! Plus, they're so much easier to clean.

Yep, Kathleen, you are correct! The Imagineers use forced perspective all over the place but the most noticeable one is on the castle.

Let's take it back some more! Now I know for sure that my generation does not know about these; I only know because I work in this department. Who can remember Laser Discs? :woohoo:

They also used forced perspective on Main Street. The buildings look taller than they really are when only the first floor (where the shops and bakery and all that are) are the correct size.

Haha ... does this mean I'm not in your generation ... because I definitely remember laser discs. My dad got a few of our Disney movies on it! I specifically remember watching Lion King on it!

I'm too young to know about laser discs :rotfl:

Haha, you just wait for the time when those younger than you are now don't remember the things you do!

LOL :rotfl: And then when DVDs first came out, the players were so expensive! Now they're unbelievably cheap!

------------------------------

I had to post today because I was sorting through a stack of cards and receipts and stuff and found this!

IMG_3597.jpg

Weird sent me flowers in January '07 because I had my gallbladder removed. I just thought the note was funny! They pump a lot of carbon dioxide into the body to pretty much make the abdomen balloon up so they can remove the organ by making only 4 incisions (laproscopically ... I may be butchering the spelling because I'm too lazy to check). All the gas ends up staying in the system and it takes a while for it to leave. It ends up causing a lot of pain, especially in the shoulders. So that's what he meant by gas. Haha, it just sounds like the other kind of gas.

Soooooo cute! :goodvibes

Wow, if those fries were good leftover, they must be really superb! I wonder if there's a Pomme Frites in my area. Or something similar...

No flats pictures in this post since it'll be quick. This past Wednesday, Weird and I went to Liberty Science Center. In the Communications exhibit, there's a virtual graffiti wall. So much fun!

Here's my work of art ...
IMG_0969.jpg

It says "How Rae" on it because we called/call ourselves "Team Howrae" since it's a combo of our names. Yeah, not that clever, but it works for us ... haha.

OT: Oh yeah, notice my awesome Mickey tote bag?! It was only $5 at a random store called "Five Below" (where I also got The Complete Walt Disney World for only $3!). Disney's starting to become a way of life!

Here's Weird's wall ...
IMG_3724.jpg

Haha, it was his attempt to write "Weird + Ninja" but I think it looks more like "Weird + fjapowieghwa."

Okie dokie, one of us will get flats pictures up soon!

Last Friday, Weird and I stopped by South Street Seaport for some photo opportunities! We walked alongside the water and saw the helicopters. We joked that it was my dad because years ago when we first dated, there would always be helicopters flying around and it was like my dad was sending them out to spy on us, haha.

We also passed by this ...
IMG_1118.jpg

... which really doesn't mean much, except that when we passed by it two years ago, I called Weird that for some random reason. Haha, so it's a memorable place for us.

We got there and saw an older couple walking down from the Peking ship. There was another group of younger people wondering if they could go up. Weird and I were wondering the same thing, but the sign said "Admission" on it. But then the older couple said that it was free that day or something. Okie dokie! More opportunities for pictures for us!

We went inside for a little while and quickly took this picture. It was really hot in there! Haha, and we had to make sure little Weird and Ninja didn't decide to fly out the porthole. If that is what it's called ...
IMG_1121.jpg

This is where the sailors would sleep. Or something like that. We didn't actually read anything because we had to get out of there because of the stuffiness.
IMG_1122.jpg

More big boatness.
IMG_1123.jpg

The two little ones got to work and tried to undo all the ropes so we could set sail.
IMG_1126.jpg

Afterwards they saw that undoing ropes is a no-no. Good thing they didn't actually have any strength to undo anything!
IMG_1125.jpg

They thought that they could sail the boat all the way to WDW even with all the ropes still in place.
IMG_1127.jpg

Which way is Florida?
IMG_1128.jpg

Alas, there was no use. The boat wouldn't move! They decided to just a picture with the Brooklyn Bridge. And yes, even one of those dumb-dumb fake waterfalls that they put up around the city. What a waste of money!
IMG_1129.jpg

Let's not even focus on that. Let's focus on Weird and Ninja, hehe. They have plans to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge one day.
IMG_1130.jpg

The non-flat Weird and Ninja!
IMG_1131.jpg

We have large heads. Haha, we fill up too much of the frame ...
IMG_1132.jpg

When they decided to leave seaport, Weird and Ninja saw these from far away! But alas, they were only uhhh, Gekko shoes. Not the real Crocs! With Mickey heads!
IMG_1133.jpg

Flat Weird and Ninja are looking forward to more adventures! And so are the real Weird and Ninja

I read once that actors tend to have larger heads than the average person. Maybe you and Weird should look into a career change! :rotfl:

I, however, have a smaller-than-average head. I think that's the reason why I can't act, as taking a beginning acting class in college proved to me.

Good thing flat Weird and Ninja weren't able to untie the ropes, though it would've been cool to go sailing. :thumbsup2

Oooh you made me so hungry for those fries, they look sooo good. What do they do to them that makes them so special. Nice place for a retreat love the little cottages. You guys are so cute together, you can tell that you have a close relationship ... even if it's not a romantic one :confused3 After reading Weird's little note .. I had an epiphany ... HowWeird is a play on his real name Howard. Hehe, I'm just so smart  ... tell me I'm right!

Haha, we just finished performing in the musical for our church's coffeehouse (singing and acting). I really enjoyed it, and I think so did he! Maybe we shoudl look into a career change. Haha, my BA will totally go down the drain, and Weird will just have to switch majors even though he almost finished getting his degree in architecture!

Your "smaller-than-average head" is still amazing when it comes to writing~ I'd take that any day!

According to the website ... "The potatoes are fried twice. The first time they are cooked through. The second time provides a golden color and makes them deliciously crisp." Deliciously is so the right word!

Actually ... Weird and I are back together :cloud9: . It's kind of strange how things worked out because it was about two years since we broke up the first time around. Now we've both "grown up" and even though there have been other prospects in our lives (though neither of us was in a relationship with anyone else), it just never seemed to make sense like the way we make sense. I was so convinced that I would never give it another try ... but I guess I've been proved wrong! God has a good sense of humor sometimes about things like this :thumbsup2 We did need those two years of "separation" where we really did have a crazy time of fighting and then reconciling and then getting back to truly being friends. I think once we got to that point, it just seemed right to give it another shot. And we're both very happy about it :goodvibes

Haha, YAYYY! Yes, HowWeird is a play on Howard. I think it started with someone at church? Haha, but now you know!

Haha actually, after the musical, one of my supervisors asked me about it and I told him how much fun it was and all and he actually asked, "fun enough to be a career change?" or something like that and I think it's really funny that it's being suggested here again! :goodvibes We'd be sure to keep you posted if anything happened!

Oh, those fries were awesome on their own but then they supposedly have some amazing sauces. The retreat cottages are actually on the lower end of the choices available so we really are so blessed to have such a beautiful retreat site!

Speaking of beautiful ... Ninja! ;) Yes, we've dated a few years ago and then we went back to being just friends but recently (around coffeehouse/retreat time) we realized that we've had feelings for each other that we just kept denying. So it was at the end of June that I just called her up and told her and then in July during the retreat where I asked Ninja if she wanted to try again. I guess we never really wanted to let "us" go and we've always been there for each other so it just makes sense! I don't want to drag this out bc I'm not sure how interested you guys are but yes indeed I do like Ninja :lovestruc and she does like me back! So we are indeed in a close romantic relationship, AKA dating. ;) Woot! :cloud9:

A few days ago, I posted two pictures from Weird and my trip to Liberty Science Center with the virtual graffiti walls. Here are just a few more pictures (flats and non-flats) from our fun day of learning! Haha, that was said with absolutely no sarcasm because we actually do like learning things like this.

Weird and Ninja were very excited to spend the day at LSC in Jersey City! They were looking forward to spend the entire day there to see every single exhibit.
IMG_1097.jpg

Here they are with the Hoberman Sphere in the background. They renovated LSC for a while. Beforehand, a huge one used to be the center of attention when you entered the building.
IMG_1040.jpg

This is in the entrance way above the ticket line. Pretty lights!
IMG_1095.jpg

One exhibit was called "Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear." It's one of the summer exhibits so it won't be there for long. From the website: What triggers our deepest fears, and how do our brains and bodies cope with danger? Find out by braving creepy animals, loud noises, electric shocks and the fear of falling, all in a safe, educational environment. Getting scared has never been so enlightening.

Little Weird didn't want to take a picture next to the brain size because as a flat, it's a little small. Instead, here's the real Weird!
IMG_3681.jpg

This is the "Freeze Game." The point is to catch the fruit falling from the tree with your arms. If the leopard sees you, you have to freeze. If you turn red ... well, you're dead meat. We were doing pretty well except for the fact that my younger was purposely moving around in front of us so that we would be eaten!
IMG_3687.jpg

Another exhibit was called "Infection Connection." From the website: The idea that germs cause disease is only about 150 years old. Yet today, medical investigators called epidemiologists can track how illnesses spread from person to person and across the globe. Find out how while discovering ways to live a healthier life and help others do the same.

Weird and Ninja needed a break from exploring so they sat down to watch a presentation called "What's in Your Water?" This girl came out and talked about all the gross things that are in our drinking water and then she showed us the filtration system that can be used (seen on the table in the back) that doesn't cost much. I think the most interesting thing she showed us was the LifeStraw, which has the filtration system inside the straw so that people in other countries can drink directly from things like puddles!
IMG_3764.jpg

There was a part of the exhibit about the germs in other parts of the world and whatnot. So they had airplane seats set up in front of the screens where you could pick your destination. Where did we want to go? Florida! Unfortunately it wasn't an option (haha, only went by countries). Instead, we just pretended that we were on our way to WDW!
IMG_3755.jpg

This next exhibit called "Communication" was actually my favorite of the entire science center. From the website: Communication
Language and the ability to communicate abstract ideas may be the single most important trait that separates humans from other animals. Learn about how human communication has evolved from handprints on cave walls to the digital tools that link us today. (This is where they had the virtual graffiti wall.)

I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to write with quills!
IMG_0971.jpg

Testing out the phones!
IMG_3737.jpg

Etch-a-Sketch?
IMG_3725a.jpg

Weird and Ninja really liked the section called "Digital Details."
IMG_3733.jpg

Weird and Ninja feel at home with the pixels! They are, after all, made up of them!
IMG_3734.jpg

A small demonstration of how pixels work.
IMG_3732.jpg

One of the Weird's favorite exhibits was "Skyscraper! Achievement and Impact." From the website: Skyscrapers are one of the towering accomplishments of modern civilization, and what better place to learn about them than in view of the world's most spectacular skyline? Our premier new exhibition gallery is larger than some museums devoted to the subject!

Can't you see the excitement on that little guy's face?
IMG_1094.jpg

Haha, you may not be able to see the excitement on his face, but trust me, it was there. I had a feeling, and he said afterwards that he didn't know why he made an excited face when he wasn't facing the camera!
IMG_1092.jpg

The real Weird knows about buildings and such because he's in an architecture program in school. However, I know absolutely nothing. Well, I do know a few things, some learned from that exhibit! Haha, those pointy things on top of buildings are called spires (although to me, they looked the spindle in Sleeping Beauty!).
IMG_0994.jpg

There was another part of LSC called "I Explore" but that was for kids aged 2-5. I thought it was cute that they have a space for them to explore on their own with things that are fitting for their developmental rate. Weird and Ninja wanted to go in there but they're too young since they're actually only a little over 1 year old. But they still really liked the bridge!
IMG_1059.jpg

Lunch was a little hectic because there were so many kids there with day camps or summer camps. Weird found the room in the back that's quieter and emptier and with a great view! We went outside on the observation deck to take pictures after lunch.
IMG_3771.jpg

Outside was an exhibit called "Wildlife Challenge." From the website: Could you survive as a wild animal living among the streets, sidewalks and sewer pipes of the urban jungle? Find out at Liberty Science Center's first-ever outdoor exhibition. You'll crawl, climb and claw your way through the challenges that face urban wildlife every day. Are you up to the challenge?

Here we're in the bigger rat tunnel. The "real" rat tunnel was reminiscent of the Touch Tunnel (that's no longer there!). It was dark and hot and it was a little scary to be crawling through it! My younger brother zoomed through and he was wondering what was taking us so long. Haha, bigger people require more time and energy to make it through on all fours!
IMG_1052.jpg

Our last stop was Connections, the gift shop! Haha. This book was so funny. It's called The Gas We Pass: The Story of Farts. Yes, we read the whole thing!
IMG_1069.jpg

And lastly ... I snagged his wrist, hehe ;)
IMG_1080.jpg

Okie dokie. There are a ton of other non-flats pictures, but so as not to bore you, I'll call it a day! Have a wonderful Thursday!

Based on the interplay between you two on this thread, I was wondering why you were "just friends"! Blessings upon your reemerging/developing relationship! :goodvibes

Weird and Ninja needed a break from exploring so they sat down to watch a presentation called "What's in Your Water?" Ah, yes. Reminds me of how, when I was doing study abroad in Oxford and we traveled to the mainland for a "tour" of Munich, Stockholm, Paris, and Rome, we were told to drink only bottled water because our bodies wouldn't be able to handle the microbes in the tap water, and it'd wreak havoc on our digestive systems. Well, I listened to that and still got sick. Touring Neuschwanstein Castle (which the Cinderella Castle is based upon) was so NOT FUN due to that.

Probably TMI, so moving on!

This next exhibit called "Communication" was actually my favorite of the entire science center. From the website: Communication
Language and the ability to communicate abstract ideas may be the single most important trait that separates humans from other animals.

But what about the dolphins? Have we learned nothing from Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

There was another part of LSC called "I Explore" but that was for kids aged 2-5. Ah, that's right up there with other literary classics such as Walter the Farting Dog and Everybody Poops. Children today are much more well-informed than I was. :rotfl:

Looking forward to more! :thumbsup2

Aww, so glad to hear you two are back together :goodvibes Romance and physical attraction are good things to have, but it truly is the friendship that is the glue that holds a relationship together. My DH and I will be celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary in Sept, and I proudly call him my bestest friend :cloud9:

Wonderful new adventures!
Sounds like you are having a fun summer!

I am glad you two are back together! :goodvibes
