Chapter 21, still day 9
A and I made it back to the lounge where we managed to throw down a few cookies and a drink. We steeled ourselves for the Waking Up Job, for everyone approaches Waking Up Shrek and E with fear and rightful trepidation. The approach and key insert gave my feet a minute to acclimate to the room temperature inside. Those two were in REM sleep in a freezer. A and I laughed, but woke their lazy carcasses so we could plan (OK, engage) the second half of the day. DH lifted his drool-ly mug from the pillow and asked, all interested and invested, Whats the Plan? He knew there was one and my presence in the dark chill meant he better get moving. Nap over.
We had a reservation for Sci-Fi Café for dinner before Fantasmic!. E was begging to swim (?) and asked if he haaaad to go to Fantasmic. Poor little guy had been along for the ride and patiently endured our penchant for scary adventures, dark drops, and fine cuisine, so I offered to stay at the Poly with him. I know!! I am a sacrificial Mom! I cant believe it either, but YES, I gave up my second favorite night show AND first time dining at Sci Fi to have a date with my Golden Sunshine. We called SciFi (well, the Middlemen at the ADR World HQ) and adjusted the number of diners, called Kona to make an ADR for us (people, it was our last night! those TS credits haaad to be eaten!), and sent the two manly men on their way.
Our evening was rough. I read (Mels first TR) and relaxed in a hammock while E played in the sand. Then we made our way to the pool where I knew he would want me to swim with him. I even put on a bathing suit because he had been asking me to swim with him all week. When we settled in at the volcano, I asked (loudly, to prepare potential witnesses) him if he wanted me to go down the volcano slide with him. He said, No , Mommy, just watch me. You can sit here, that will be fine. My heart swelled!! I have never loved so much. Yippee! I felt the audible sigh from my fellow guests and truly wanted to buy everyone a drink, so profound was my relief. See, March-in-a-bathing-suit doesnt work for me. Pale, comfortable winter flesh feels better in clothing on dry land. OK, onward.
I had a beer while I watched this hundreds of times. I made the little stud wrap up and accompany me to the Concierge Lounge for a free (!) beer. I brought back two and gave one to a Mom I was chatting up at the pool. I dont do solitude. Like people. Chit chat. New people. PFs (Potential friends). Disney-mad folk. Two beers later I knew we had to go back to the room for our appointment. I dreaded it, but the empty suitcases were waiting and I had a truckload of condensing to do.
I gave E the five minute warning and tried to prepare for the task ahead. When we got back to the refrigerator (now), I told E he could take a huge bath with all the buckets and shovels from the beach. I faced the next task with determination. I have to tell you something: I could not believe how many of those yellow, black, and red Dis-bags I unearthed. I jumped a bit every time I peeked inside one of those treasure holders. We had Disney trademark junk out the wazoo and I had to get it in the bags without my husbands head spinning off axis. I had most of it done before E shriveled so I made him get dressed for our dinner date.
The two of us had a nice stroll to the Great Ceremonial House. Weve never eaten at Kona, but I had heard (read) it was good. At this point in the trip we had eaten so much the food scarcely mattered, but I was looking forward to it anyway. My sweet E was seated facing the plastic renditions of dessert. I noticed he ate a hearty dinner, then realized he plowed through it to get to dessert. He had seen the impressive cone/waffle/ice cream/cotton candy temptation before we sat down. About the time we ordered dessert, Shrek and A called, on their way home from Fantasmic!. They joined us in Kona to tell us about their evening and snap a picture of our date:
We missed Wishes that night, but it was an easy sacrifice to cherish a cozy booth for two and watch my Sunshine eat his cotton candy dessert.
DH and A reported that SciFi was great fun. A apparently screamed with laughter at every cheesy pun, but then, arent cheesy puns geared toward twelve year old boys? I know when he gathers with his friends, the Arrrrrr
pirate jokes never end. Shrek said his favorite part was watching A have so much fun:
Hmmm
that sounded familiar
.and while I sometimes wonder if we enjoy our couple dates the way we find new intimacy in one-on-one sessions with our sons, I rationalize that the security we feel as a couple is different from the novel experience of watching life with an evolving young person.
When the last bite of cotton candy was cleared from the bowl, the four Fixers walked back to our treasured piece of vacation paradise to catch our last night of magical dreams. I set the wakeup call as early as I dared, for the next day would be our last in The World for 2006. Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight
Day 9 totals:

I so appreciate your patience in sticking with me! I have honestly relished savoring our trip by writing about it in installments, though it was never my intention to take so long! Thank you for your very kind comments!
