The Fishy Bagel Debate

Do you put lox on your bagels?

  • Yes! It's great!

  • No way! No fishy bagels for me!

As far as the Southern Jersey folks who posted about it, you know what is coming. According to everyone in Central and Northern NJ, Southern NJ is not a part of our state.

That's for sure, and proud of it!

Yes, I have lived in Maine for 22 years, but I am still a product of South Jersey.

I even have citizenship papers to prove that I am a resident of the great state of South Jersey. Got them around thirty years ago when South Jersey was threatening to secede.

Only if they understand that you're referring to the smoked fish, not liquid oxygen (sorry, that's what I remember from my much younger days following the U.S. space program).:rolleyes1

Well, it would make for a very interesting cruise...but please, NO SMOKING!

: I am going to check every diner from now on to see if it is on the menu. I am then going to ask if only Jewish people get it because that apparently is a standard.

Every once in a while something comes along and you think to yourself "I shouldnt miss this".

The dinner in the Great Movie Ride was like that.

This also falls into that category.

Please ask Sean to get a Flip video camera so that the rest of the Dis Unplugged folks can enjoy this.

I'm slightly hysterical thinking about it.:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I love me some bagels and lox! My absolute favorite is an everything bagel, plain schmear (not too much, but not so little that I don't have to go searching for it), a nice thick piece slice of tomato, and raw red onions (either a pile of very, VERY thinly sliced or 1 thick slice). It's to die for!

*NikkiBell*;35219217 I don't need remedial reading. I teach reading. I was also an English major. I just purposely twisted the linguistics to suit my posts. ;):rolleyes1 [/quote said:
Nikki - I'm thinking you have a second career coming .... only lawyers and painters can change black to white....:)

now returning to my bagel w/lox and cream cheese

Kevin, I think this may have to be DIS event. I don't think Sean can get me to eat it. Rofl

Hmm. I'm sensing a Jerzy DISer diner meet in the near future.

You know the rules... name the date! :thumbsup2
As for the place-Mastoris would be an ideal location by the way- nice and centrally located (right off the turnpike, 295, 195, 206, etc.)

I'm from Jackson - central Jersey, lol - and would totally be in for a meet at Mastoris! They have the best cheese bread.... omg to die for!! :thumbsup2

Nikki, Nikki... I grew up in the town right next to yours- and I had bagels and lox almost every week. It was a staple.
And I agree- every bagel store and every NJ diner has it available- 40 years ago and even now.
Matawan Diner, Keyport Diner, (the former)Olga's Diner, Ponzio's - oh, and I do love Mastoris!!!

Love Ponzios & Olgas is missed. :(

Okay, well, maybe it is because I just don't eat weird foods?! :rotfl: I am going to check every diner from now on to see if it is on the menu. I am then going to ask if only Jewish people get it because that apparently is a standard according to a few including Lori. lol

It generally is a Jewish food, but bagels started out as a Jewish food, too.

When people ask me where I'm from, I generally say "near Philadelphia" rather than NJ (or "NJ, near Philadelphia.") Some in South Jersey don't count North Jersey as part of our state either. ;)

So, we just happened to go to a diner yesterday afternoon for lunch. Low and behold, "Nova Scotia Lox" was on the bagel menu. I am convinced it is for the non-NJ patrons. ;)

Last night in chat was quite strange; well, stranger than usual. Kevin started talking about eating fishy bagels and it got me thinking. How many of you eat lox on your bagel? I don't know anyone here in NJ who does so. I even asked at work today and couldn't find one person.

To be fishy or not to be fishy. That is the question. ;)

I'm from NJ and I sometimes eat lox on my bagel. I love sushi too.

sounds good to me !!

by the way, have you never heard of Scottish smoked salmon?
i'm willing to bet a kings ransom that it has nothing to do with jews...

I think it is mostly a Jewish thing. I've never tried it.

I'm from a family of mostly WASPs:lmao: and it is one of our favorite things to eat! It is actually a family tradition to eat Lox and Bagels on Christmas morning; so it is certainly not a Jewish thing

We're from "nowhere NJ" - but we'll find it - name the date :thumbsup2

Oh, it's only an hour and 40 minutes, no problem!
