As far as the Southern Jersey folks who posted about it, you know what is coming. According to everyone in Central and Northern NJ, Southern NJ is not a part of our state.

That's for sure, and proud of it!

Yes, I have lived in Maine for 22 years, but I am still a product of South Jersey.

I even have citizenship papers to prove that I am a resident of the great state of South Jersey. Got them around thirty years ago when South Jersey was threatening to secede.

The dinner in the Great Movie Ride was like that.

I love me some bagels and lox! My absolute favorite is an everything bagel, plain schmear (not too much, but not so little that I don't have to go searching for it), a nice thick piece slice of tomato, and raw red onions (either a pile of very, VERY thinly sliced or 1 thick slice). It's to die for!

Nikki, Nikki... I grew up in the town right next to yours- and I had bagels and lox almost every week. It was a staple.
And I agree- every bagel store and every NJ diner has it available- 40 years ago and even now.
Matawan Diner, Keyport Diner, (the former)Olga's Diner, Ponzio's - oh, and I do love Mastoris!!!

Love Ponzios & Olgas is missed.

It generally is a Jewish food, but bagels started out as a Jewish food, too.

When people ask me where I'm from, I generally say "near Philadelphia" rather than NJ (or "NJ, near Philadelphia.") Some in South Jersey don't count North Jersey as part of our state either.

So, we just happened to go to a diner yesterday afternoon for lunch. Low and behold, "Nova Scotia Lox" was on the bagel menu. I am convinced it is for the non-NJ patrons.

Last night in chat was quite strange; well, stranger than usual. Kevin started talking about eating fishy bagels and it got me thinking. How many of you eat lox on your bagel? I don't know anyone here in NJ who does so. I even asked at work today and couldn't find one person.

To be fishy or not to be fishy. That is the question.

I'm from NJ and I sometimes eat lox on my bagel. I love sushi too.

I think it is mostly a Jewish thing. I've never tried it.

I'm from a family of mostly WASPs and it is one of our favorite things to eat! It is actually a family tradition to eat Lox and Bagels on Christmas morning; so it is certainly not a Jewish thing
