The Fishy Bagel Debate

Do you put lox on your bagels?

  • Yes! It's great!

  • No way! No fishy bagels for me!

I'm from Bergen County and there is lox at all the bagel places I go to, yet I've never known anyone to actually eat bagels and lox.
Someone must for the bagel store to keep it in stock, it won't be me, though.;)

I've heard of bagels and lox. :teacher:

But I always wondered if they were combination lox. :rotfl:

Nikki Sweetie- you and I live 20 miles from each other. But, yet it seems like different world. Go into any NJ Diner, a bagel with lox and cream cheese is always on the menu. Agree with Kevin and John, gotta have capers.

You want to meet at Mastoris Diner one Sunday Morning?

In Bordentown? Fabulous place!

I will meet people there next time I drive to South Jersey.

Nikki, Nikki... I grew up in the town right next to yours- and I had bagels and lox almost every week. It was a staple.
And I agree- every bagel store and every NJ diner has it available- 40 years ago and even now.
Matawan Diner, Keyport Diner, (the former)Olga's Diner, Ponzio's - oh, and I do love Mastoris!!!

Almost everyone I know has at least heard of lox & cream cheese on a bagel and I know tons of people who actually eat it routinely.

I am in South Jersey now- and we have great bagels in my town- and yes, they sell lox there too. ;)
And when I lived in Chicago- it was on the menu at breakfast places everywhere.

The only place I couldn't find it- heck, I couldn't even find bagels!!- was in Indiana when I went to Purdue (eons ago). My son just graduated from Purude, and I am happy to report that they have bagels there now- and lox at some places!!!!! Even in the middle of nowhere. :hippie:

Have I heard of it- HECK YEAH!!
Do I like it- You bet :thumbsup2

Yes I have herd of Bagels and Lox. Everyone in my family eats this but me. They also add raw onions to it. Eeeewww I just like plain cream cheese on everything bagels. The best!!

I've lox and bagels just once, at a Jewish wedding. Didn't mind it. I never was a sushi person though - I'll eat it occasionally, but haven't quite figured out what the fuss is.

I've also never cared for cream cheese. I can tolerate it on my bagel if its the only option, especially if it is an herb variety or something like that, but only if there is no butter around. Butter rocks.

Should I call DCL and make sure they stock up on lox in December? :)

Okay, well, maybe it is because I just don't eat weird foods?! :rotfl: I am going to check every diner from now on to see if it is on the menu. I am then going to ask if only Jewish people get it because that apparently is a standard according to a few including Lori. lol

I dunno where Mastoris Diner is. I'd love to meet there one time, but there's no way and heck I'm going for fishy bagels!!! You'll have to hog tie me and film it for everybody! :lmao:

You need to take Remedial Reading for Comprehension.

I didnt say you started the conversation.

I was asked what I was having for snack. I replied "bagels and lox".

You suggested you had "Never heard of bagels and lox and that no one in NJ eats bagels and lox".

And I'm not trying to hack your poll.

I'm making you more worldly.:thumbsup2

I don't need remedial reading. I teach reading. I was also an English major. I just purposely twisted the linguistics to suit my posts. ;):rolleyes1

If you are making me more worldly, wouldn't that require your getting me to actually EAT this?! Not happening!!! I don't think even a bribe would work....well, hmm...I guess it depends on what it is. ;)

As far as the Southern Jersey folks who posted about it, you know what is coming. According to everyone in Central and Northern NJ, Southern NJ is not a part of our state. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: Therefore, you don't count! ;)

BTW, I had a bagel today at our monthly birthday breakfast celebration at work. I did NOT, however, eat a fishy one. :dance3:

Don't you know that NJ has its own version of the Mason/Dixon line? It used to be the Krauszer's/Wawa line, but that might be a little blurry now.

As far as diner menus go, you'll be surprised how many serve a bagel & lox platter. But IMO there are way better choices for a diner breakfast. =)

That's for sure!!! :rotfl:
We even go so far as to associate ourselves with either NY or Philadelphia (neither of which are actually in NJ!!!)

I was born and raised in the northern section of the state (Bayonne, Woodbridge, Matawan, Long Branch),
but I am now a much happier (saner ) citizen of the nation of South Jersey!!!

(But I will admit- NYC beats the heck out of Philly...)

Hmm. I'm sensing a Jerzy DISer diner meet in the near future.

Count us in! We even have one or two good diners out in Warren County.

For the record: Toasted bagel with butter
Smoked salmon (lox) with my own sour cream, horseradish and caper dressing

Now I'm hungry again.:rotfl2:

Not to change the subject, but you ever heard of an LEO?

Lox + eggs + onion

Great breakfast treat - on a bagel or straight up.

Red or white onions?
Anything to avoid the cream cheese is good by me.

It's not a Mason/Dixon line. It's a sandwich quadrangle: hero, hoagie, sub or grinder.

Mastori's in in Bordentown, south of Trenton.
You are near the shore, Tom's River area?
Mastori's is not in your neighborhood.

And, they are not fishy bagels!
They are bagels with smoked fish.
How odd would a bagel be if the fish was baked into it?!

Should I call DCL and make sure they stock up on lox in December? :)

Only if they understand that you're referring to the smoked fish, not liquid oxygen (sorry, that's what I remember from my much younger days following the U.S. space program).:rolleyes1
