Arrival day- Chef Mickey's

The concept of restaurant is great. The food was ok. However, if you are flying in from the West Coast, with two small children who have had a so-so plane ride and you're hot and exhausted, don't come here your first night! It's simply crazy; first you check in; then you wait; then you have to get your picture done; then you wait a couple minutes; then you sit down. Our server was out in a heartbeat getting our drink order (soda, coffee, tea included in the price) and off we went to the buffet. I was so tired and had a migraine coming on at this point, that I got salad, a piece of bread, some veggies, some of the parmasan potatoes (they are good) and some white fish. My husband had some chicken and shrimp. The kids ate a bite or two of hot dog and chicken strip- they were anxiously awaiting the characters. (my boys are 5 years and 20 months). The character interaction was ok- Chip spent the most time with the boys and that was nice. Goofy and Donald stay in the waiting area, and Mickey, Minnie, Chip and Dale roam around. We hit the dessert bar (What, no cupcakes!!!) and the kids had ice cream and I had a piece of cheesecake and a bite of the chocolate mousse cake. I would give it a C- too hectic & the food was ok, but nothing awesome. $75 with tip.

2/28- lunch at Cosmic Rays; we had burgers with carrots, a hot dog for our 5 year old and corn dog nuggets for our toddler. My parents flew in from CA and we had lunch with them. Mom had a tuna sand and Dad had a deli sand. We sat outside, which was good so the kids were able to roam. The lady messed up our order and charged for 3 milks when we only ordered 1, so we got that fixed. Food- standard theme park fare. I liked the toppings bar, and that you could substitute carrots for fries. It was about $27 with drinks (not incl my parents sandwiches)

Dinner at Whispering canyon- nice boat ride from the CR to the WL. A short wait for our PS. They have a big table of Lincoln Logs the kids can play with while you wait. Our server was quite bland and a little slow. Other servers were bursting with fun jokes and comments. My mother in law is also now with us- a true family vacation! 4 of the adults had the all you can eat skillet & my mom had pork chops, which were huge and good. Sam (5 year old) had a hot dog and the baby ate off my plate. The skillet includes great biscuits and cornbread, salad, ribs, roasted chicken, sausage, pulled pork, "Dinty Moore Stew" (our server said that when he put it down and it rubbed us the wrong way- it was like oh boy, canned stew), and beans. It was really, really good, and Sam had a fantastic time with the pony races. We found the server's jokes and antics a riot and wished our own server was more with it. We asked for seconds on ribs, chicken, salad & biscuits. My dad picked up the tab- thanks Dad!! But it was $21.99 a person for the skillet. Grade- B+ (would have been an A if our server was quicker and played along more)

Lunch at the the Land Food Fair- this was ok. It was nice that we could all choose our own thing. We got corn dogs for the kids and BBQ chicken sandwiches for us. My parents got sandwiches and my mother in law got a salad. Not so great chicken sandwiches- they are BBQ basted, but no lettuce, tomato or onions on them, nor is there a topping bar. My 20 month old liked my sandwich & fries more than his corn dog, so he ate a lot of it, and I nibbled on his corn dog & chips. With drinks all around it came to $26. I would give it a C- or even a D+ cause the corn dogs were totally small for 3.50, and the sandwiches were just blah. I did like that it came with a cookie!

Dinner at Rose and Crown- my plan for an outside table didn't happen, but our server more than made up for it. Kerry was so awesome- very, very nice, very quick and efficient. Me, Dad and Sara (my mother in law) had the fish and ships, mom had the prime rib and Bob (my DH) had the special- steak and stuffed shrimp. The kids had a hot dog and the Mary Poppins pizza. The fish was great- huge piece, hot and crispy. Bob said the shrimp was really good, although his steak was a little more done that he preferred, but still good and Mom's prime rib was delish. Josh, my 20 month old, was shoveling my peas in his mouth and Kerry commented "Finally someone who likes peas! I carry mountains of them back to throw out every night! How delightful!" It was cute. The manager, came and asked us how we were doing and made nice chit chat and played with Josh. It was a very nice meal. It was even nicer for us cause this time Sara picked up the tab!! We then stepped outside to watch Illuminations and it was really a neat show. Overall a solid A.

Lunch at Chakanrandi (SP?) Chicken stand in Asia at the AK- I had really wanted to get lunch at either Tusker House or Flame Tree, but we were all starving and this was all of our first time at this park so we were kind of disoriented. This stand is near Kali River Rapids and also has a mini McDonalds behind it that sold fries and big hot dogs. Sara, Bob, and I got the chicken stir fry over rice. Mom and Dad got a beef salad. Josh ate off of my plates and part of his brother's hot dog and Doritoes. It was very hot and humid this day- it downpoured about 90 minutes later so that's why it was so humid I guess. Anyway, it was ok, pretty healthy and filled our stomachs. We paid for Sara's and she paid for the hot dog---I think it was around 26 for the chicken plates and drinks. I liked that our drink came in a small souvenier cup. I would give it a B-...I wish the veggies were a little crisper.

Dinner at Shula's- this was the first of two nights out for Bob and I. We had high expectations for Shula's. We were seated quickly and our server came over right away and took our drink orders. We each had a cocktail. Each table has two waiters- it seems like our first waiter was the "head" guy and the second guy did a lot of the grunt work- like bringing the food and clearing the plates. The first guy did all the talking, explaining the menu, etc. The biggest problem of this night was that about 5 minutes after we sat down, this huge party of 15 sat down behind us. I thought "Uh-oh....we're never going to see our server again"." (I have waitressed at 3 major restaurants and I know how it is when you get a huge party- it is a big deal). And sure enough the second waiter- Aleks, brought our drinks and our bread. And we sat. The big table had cocktails all around, appetizers all around- it was easily going to be a $2,000 tab and I'm not kidding. The tip would be half a mortgage payment! Anyway, our waiter comes back and my husband says very politely, "We see you got a big table...I hope that won't keep you from our table." Our server was very nice and obliging and said "Oh no sir, of course not." And he presented the meats and the sides and we ordered. We shared a caesar salad & shrimp cocktail as an appetizer, I got a side of potato skins, Bob got the creamed spinach, I got the Filet Mignon and Bob got the Kansas City Strip. Alexs brought all of this food- and the food was out of this world. It was awesome- the steak was melt in your mouth and the potato skins were so good. You got two huge strips of potato and I only ate one- but I wish I could have fit the other in my stomach! And Alexs cleared our plates. Ted (the original server) did check on us and bring the tab. The only thing I did not like about this place is it is LOUD! We could hardly have a conversation. The tab was $117. We slipped Alexs some cash on the side and said this is just for you and left another $23 for them to split up, however they do that. Afterwards we walked around the Marketplace at DtD and shared a raspberry white chocolate cookie from the Gourmet Pantry. It was good and about $3 I think. Overall, an A- the food is worth the money, just hope you don't sit next to a huge party of big spenders who will take up all of your waiter's time!!! ;-)

Stay tuned for the next 3 days which include Rainforest Cafe, Cape May Cafe, Pizza Planet and O'hana!!!

You are such a good writer. I am not inclined that way. Thanks so much for your reviews. I have really enjoyed reading them. Everything sounds soooooo good.

Thanks for the reviews .. especially Chef Mickey's! Now I've got a better idea of what we can expect ;) At the Rose & Crown, did they let you watch Illuminations from the restaurant patio? I remember last May they let diners onto the patio but I've been hearing that's not the case anymore... :(

We did not watch from the patio...it was still a good half hour til it started so we went right to the left of Rose and Crown and watched it. The park attendance was very light so we had no problem getting a great spot. :)

Thanks so much for the fantastic reviews! I'm glad you and DH were able to have an adults night out! I'm looking forward to reading more. :)
