The fine line between crazy and insane....kickin' asphalt on the way to Goofy '08

 :wizard: Hugs and pixie dust for a speedy recovery. Keep your chin up. Don't let those demons get a hold of ya. Minor halt in training, but you'll be right back out there in no time. :thumbsup2

Hey Amy! Sorry to be MIA this week.

Sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well, I hope you are feeling better. As for that hip pain, take it easy, you have a long time before the Goofy and you should take care of it now, before it gets worse.

Keep up the good work!!

Hi Guys...

Wow...I'm really overdue for a training update here. I honestly hesitated to post over the past week because it would sound like the same old complaints...injury, concern, blah blah blah  . So....although I did go through some bouts of feeling sorry for myself...I also decided to come up with an action plan.

My weakness is definitely the hip region...and tendonitis in general. I am used to dealing with sore hips after runs, that has become part of my running life lol. Unfortunately, after my last Sunday long run, my left hip was tender to the touch over the bone...and the muscles felt like they were stretched soooo tight from my glutes to my quads. I was back to limping around again :(. Anyway....It didn't really improve...even though I took nearly a week off from running. So I visited the Chiropractor again! And today I got a deep tissue sports massage (OUCH!!! ). The chiro wants to see me again tomorrow and the therapist says I need some serious work over the next month. I really have faith that seeing those professionals, along with lots of WATER and STRETCHING, will help me overcome this latest little obstacle.

The best news is that I already feel better :). :goodvibes And you don't have to hear me whine and complain  . At least not today ;).

Training since my last post:

Wed: Ski Machine and Pilates
Thurs: Rest/Sick
Fri: Rest/Sick
Sat: Pilates
Sun: Ski Machine/Pilates
Mon: Rest
Tues: 3 Mile Run/Pilates
Wed: Ski Machine
Thurs: 3 Mile Run / Pilates

So...my two runs this week were pretty good. I went slow...I pulled back today from 4 miles down to 3 miles because of the heat. Not to mention that I really need to take care of my legs and try to get myself healthy again.

I plan to do some XT tomorrow...maybe FINALLY get out there on that bike and do a 9 or 10 mile ride. Saturday I was planning to do a 5K but I think I'll attempt to get to Pilates class instead :). Sunday I have a 6 mile run scheduled!

Wish me luck! I'm really trying to train smart...and I think by allowing myself to rest a bit last week, I may have headed off a serious injury!

Thanks for stopping by! :)

Hey girl. :goodvibes I definitely like the looks of the training plan and what you did the past week. You are taking rests as you need them and cut back on running when needed as well. :thumbsup2 I'm PROUD of ya! I know it's not easy for you and that little competitive voice inside of you.

LOVE that new quote. So true. So true.

Keep on seeing the profesionals and you will all get through this together. We're here for you, Amy. No matter what kind of days/weeks you're having. Don't go disappearing and leave us here to worry.

Love ya, girl.

Hey there kiddo!

Glad to see the proactive approach to dealing with the injuries and setbacks. I know that none of it is easy for you, but I continue to this day to admire your determination....you may get a little down on yourself from time to time, but you always take action to fix any issues that you have and strive to make your next long term goal. I've admired that from day one and still admire it to this day. Good job!!! (ok, i'm just a little jealous of the fact you can bike)

Good luck with runs/workouts today and this weekend. Nice to see my running buddy is still there plugging away :)

Have a great day!!

 Thanks Scott and Kim! You guys really help me keep perspective. It's nice to see feedback on my training...I'm REALLY trying to keep things sane this time around :).

So today I FINALLY got out on the bike I'm borrowing from my friend. It was an interesting ride. The biking thing is new to my training (sure I rode a bike as a kid but it's been years..). So with borrowed helmet and borrowed bike...HR monitor on and ready to record...I set out for my ride. I decided to keep it close to home (read: neighborhood), since I know the distances of the loops and I knew I'd get a solid workout with all the hills. So I started on my 4 mile loop when a little over 1 mile into...the chain popped off  . So I flipped it over....reattached the chain (or whatever it is you do with a chain :confused3 ) and got back on the horse, er, bike.

I managed to complete a very slow 6 miles in 30 minutes (but that time included bike repair lol). The hills about KILLED ME!! My goodness...who knew biking was harder than running? Not me  . I was suckin' wind getting up those hills, my quads were burning, I even had to stop twice :sad2: . But I really felt like I got a solid XT workout. Now if I can build up to that 15 mile distance just maybe I'll sign up for that triathlon in August :rolleyes1 .

So my biking adventure made me realize that  a) I'd like to own my own shiny new bike (would it be weird to have a basket, horn and streamers too? b) biking is definitely a killer workout, and perhaps that quad work I need to do can be accomplished just with biking instead of the evil squats, lunges and wall sits  .

OK...hopefully I'll be able to post on Sunday that I had a lovely little run and all is well in Amy-World :).

Arrrr mateys....have ye a great weekend. pirate: (cross reference to Scott's journal).

Woah...Amy-World...sounds like such a happy place...are tickets available? :)

You are so hardcore!! Running is not enough so you get out there and cycle...not only do you cycle but you complete a high maintenance repair in the middle of your training...wow!! Cycling, cycling tech work, yoga, pilates, endurance running, kickboxing, jazzercise, ski machine, swimming, is there anything you can't do? :confused3

Oh yeah...I'm ALL for the horn, basket and streamers!! Could you imagine what the other triathletes would think? :rotfl2: I have some old baseball cards I could throw in so you could attach them to your wheels for a great annoying clicking sound as you ride!!

Have a great weekend!

:rotfl: :rotfl: YES!!! What's the point of pimpin' out your bike without the cards!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Awesome bike ride, girl! :thumbsup2 What kind of bike is it? I have one of those big seat types of bikes. Would that be a good thing to ride for me to get in some extra leg work? Or should I only be using a specific kind?

Have a wonderful weekend, Amy! We need to talk soon to set up a day we can get together.

Kim...I think I answered the bike question in your journal lol. BUT just in case I totally spaced on it, I think that ANY biking you do will be a beneficial form of cross training :). I have a very old....and very rusty, borrowed 12 speed. The basic components of the bike are pretty good though (from what I've been told) and the bottom line for me is that I need to get out there and see if I have a 15 mile bike leg (triathlon) in my future. The swimming needs to be tested too LOL. BUT.....as for XT....biking is at the top of the list along with swimming, ski machine/cross country skiing and elliptical. So, it's only going to benefit your running if you manage to get a day or two of bike rides in per week :). I think you'll know you're getting a good workout if you wear your HR monitor and try to keep it at a cardio level.

Okey Dokey.....on to my weekend of training :)

Saturday: 75 minutes of Pilates. Was a very challenging class!

Sunday: 6 miles (65 minutes). Fairly slow run....avg. HR was high at 171. The heat and humidity were really brutal. Temps were around 80 but the humidity was the real killer. No pain during the run :thumbsup2 . A little tightness in the left hip after mile 5 but nothing severe :). Overall a successful run (trying not to worry about the pace).

Tomorrow is a rest day...which is a good thing b/c the torrential rains we're expecting wouldn't make for a good run OR bike ride LOL.

I hope you all had a great weekend! Happy June!!! :sunny:

Yes, you did answer my bike question! Thanks. I'm nervous about falling off the ol' bike since I haven't ridden in such a long time. :rolleyes1 But it's worth a shot.

Great run, girl! That's still less that 11 mpm's and that's speedy quick for me!! I don't think I'd even come close to finishing 6 miles at that pace. I'm so glad you were pain free too. That's super important, and probably made you glad you did a "slow" run, right? :thumbsup2

Take care and have a great week!

Aimster!!

Great job there with the tough class yesterday and the awesome run today!! So nice to see you running 6 miles on Sunday :) And to have very little pain is a HUGE deal!! Way to go!! Looks like someone is back into a regular training groove :thumbsup2

Just be careful out there in the heat. Lots of water...lots of water...and keep that pace toned down. I know you think it's slow, but realize that it is really where you should be for long runs in the heat. Just be glad you got the miles in and had no negative repurcussions on your injury :) good job!!!

So I'm still a little jealous of the biking, but it's cool to see you out there taking on that challenge too. It has to be a great XT workout to compliment running...I bet you'll see a lot of benefits from it. I think my running buddy is gonna become a triathlete soon....just let me know when and I'll be there to cheer you on!! *searches for magic markers and a poster board* ;)

Have a great evening!

You're doing a great job, Amy! Keep up the good work!:cheer2:

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Hey Amy...how's it goin? Hope all is well and you're still feeling good, girlie.

Hi Everyone

Wow it's been a long week and it's only Wednesday ;) . Anyway....I have to say that I've been through some mental roller coaster riding this week in terms of training and running in general. I have to say that I've developed this really dysfunctional relationship with running LOL. I know that sometimes the running abuses me...but I keep on going back for more. I think that it abuses me because I don't always respect it! I miss running when I can't. I hate it when I can. I want to go faster. I compare myself to everyone out there that runs faster than me. Even when I do have a good run I'm still not satisfied. It all led me to ask the question...

"WHAT IS IT THAT I WANT FROM RUNNING???"

In the beginning, way back in January 2006, I really just wanted to start running because I knew it was a challenge for me. I knew that it would possibly take an act of God for me to view myself as A RUNNER. But that's what I wanted...a challenge, something BIG, a reason to call myself a runner. And here I sit, a full 1.5 years later, with all the miles under my belt...the multiple 5K races....a trail run....a 5 Mile race...a completed marathon.....a completed half marathon. And still, as strange as it sounds, I still do not consider myself a runner. I don't ever feel like a runner...when I'm at a race I feel like an imposter wearing a costume. There I am with my Nike running shorts and my Asics sneakers and my fancy watch.....stretching out like all the other runners, pinning my number on like all the other runners...but still, I feel like an alien. I don't look at others like that, some who are unable to run due to health reasons..those slower than me....those people are certainly runners. So why is it I'm unable to convince myself...ME....that I really am a runner and really deserve to be called a runner?

I know I keep saying it..but I really need to reevaluate what it is I want from running. Fitness? Sure :). Health? Sure :) Thinner Legs? OF course :).
But for some reason that isn't enough. I've set goals for myself....maybe lofty ones...well, who knows. Running is so unpredictable. I can get hurt...things can get in the way of training....maybe I just can't go that fast LOL. :rolleyes1 So I really need to step back and measure the little things...the small improvements....not some huge accomplishment. The day to day. It's very very hard for me to do that...just so you all know LOL! But I saw this quote from oprah (YES!!! OPRAH....do NOT make fun of me Scott!!!)....

"The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance - and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning." -Oprah Winfrey

So my dream is to really be satisfied with running me :). To feel like a runner...not an imposter....to enjoy my runs and races! My goal, my dream, is no longer to beat any particular time. Sure...if I run fast I'll be happy :thumbsup2 ...but I have to view EACH run as a success. If' I'm out there running...then it's a success! Bottom line :). Because that means I'm not hurt, I'm healthy and I'm able to do something good for myself that day!!!

OK...enough philosophizing for today. And...should I whine about my pace or anything along those lines...feel free to copy and paste this post ;).

On to training.....

Monday: Day Off :goodvibes
Tuesday: 75 Min. Pilates, 3 Mile Run (9:18 pace!)
Wednesday: 60 Min. Pilates, 6 Mile Bike Ride (12 mph)

Sooo....I've started off really well! And I have also really improved my nutrition and water intake. Sure it's only been a few days of being super diligent...BUT...it's a start! Only 19 days to go to make it a habit LOL! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Yo Aimeee....

(sorry...watched Rocky Balboa last weekend...I was able to stop wearing the grey sweats and hoodie after a few days, but some of the lingo is lingering..:confused3 )

So I was really into your post until I got about halfway down....Oprah? She's a definite running inspiration for all of us :lmao: Just kidding...the quote is actually a pretty good one, I like it :goodvibes

It's funny cause I know you are a runner, and when I see you at the races, you definitely look like a runner...the people on the DIS believe you are a runner...everyone thinks you are a runner except yourself. But it looks like you have a great plan to convince yourself of this inner runnerness...hmmm....maybe I can help:

(you are a runner)...so Amy, how is the weather up...(you are a runner)...in Jersey? I hope it isn't...(you are a runner)...too hot for all of those awesome runs and rides that you...(you are a runner)...have been doing! Way to go with all...(you are a runner)...of the exercise that you are putting in...(you are a runner)...you are really a fitness role model for me :) ...(you are a runner)...I hope you have a great week...(you are a runner)...and keep us posted on your progress!! ...(you are a runner)...

:rotfl2:

Sorry to be so silly, but hey...it's me!! What did you expect?

For real, way to go with the TONS of workouts that you've been tackling...and I'm very happy that you beat out that injury...nice job!!!

Have a great day!

Hey Amy--

WTG on all your recent workouts! This weather has been kind of crazy here lately. It has just been so hot on some days the last few weeks. Great job on the biking XT....I love the story about the chain coming off...if that happened to me, I would probably just throw in the towel and run home.

Like Scott said, we all believe you are a runner...the hard part is getting yourself to believe it. Just keep telling yourself that you are a runner and eventually you will believe it!!

Hope you have a great rest of the week!

Very subtle, Scott!:thumbsup2 :lmao:

 Amy,

Several years ago, my DH was a wrestler in high school(He wasn't my DH then by the way. ;):lmao: ) and their team motto was:

"Think It, Feel It, Believe It.... States."

The team was trying to make the state wrestling tournament as their goal for the year. At the beginning of the year, no one really believed that they could make states. A lot of the guys had personal issues and some of the guys were way out of shape. They focused on that motto every practice and at the end of the year, a couple of them made and several of them almost made the state tournament.

Another example.... LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.... In an interview the other day with head coach Mike Brown, he stated that at the beginning of the basketball season, LeBron would chant 1,2,3 Championship in the team huddle. He admitted that it made him nervous talking about a championship so soon... He preferred LeBron to say 1,2,3 Defense instead. Anyhow, he let LeBron do his thing and the guys started believing in themselves. Long story short, they are in the NBA Finals for the first time ever!:cheer2:

You are a runner, Amy..... You just have to think it, feel it, and believe it. (Easier said than done, right? ;) ) Focus on all that you have accomplished in the past year. Keep telling yourself that you are a runner... Think it, speak it, feel it, and believe it.

You have inspired so many of us, Amy. We know that you're a runner and we want you to believe that for yourself. :grouphug:

You are doing a great job! Keep up the good work!:cheer2:

Need a smack, girlie? :confused3

:rotfl: (I'm just kidding, and going with the tough love approach my mom instilled in me. :headache: ). You know I love ya. You're one tough cookie and (as I've said many times) my complete inspiration.

Thank you so much for opening your heart to us. That's what your journal is for, honestly. Get it out there, get feedback and feel better. :thumbsup2

Awesome workouts this week, Amy. And congrats on pushing that injury to the curb. :yay:

(just wanted to see if I could sneak all the way across your journal without being noticed)

:confused3  WHAT are you doing Scott. Did you forget to take your meds today????
