The financially irresponsible WDW trip! [June 25th: p.45, posts 668 & 669]

Ellester Oh your poor baby. for him. It's awful when they're sick and I think it's scary for them when they vomit. You probably read above that my little girl was sick today too - dreadful cough and even vomited once from the force of it. We think it's most likely asthma as she has the same symptoms as my eldest DS and this 'barking' cough has happened a few times now. She's sleeping soundly now thank heavens. Good idea about hooking them up. lol!! They already have Disney in common!!! That's an excellent start :) Not long to go now before your trip!! How exciting! Thanks for the heads up on the names. I'm gonna fix that.

I hope your little one is feeling better. My little guy seems to be better. He woke up this morning with "I really really firsty mommy" and "I really really hungy" so we'll see how a little bit of apple juice and toast sits in his tummy. He was freaked out about vomiting. He just didn't understand what was going on. I'm glad it happens infrequently enough that they don't get used to it! My niece just got out of the hospital with an asthma attack/bacterial lung infection yesterday. It is SO scary when they have trouble breathing. I have asthma too and I know how much it hurts when your chest tightens up. Not a nice feeling at all. I'll be praying for a quick recovery for your angel. I'm sure you'll take good care of her, we'll try to be patient in waiting for your next installment!

:lmao: Wow, Deb, that IS pretty darn incredible! I may print it out just to prove to DD and DH that there is someone who plans even more than I do! They mock mercilessly me because at the parks, I carry around a sheet of paper that lists park hours/EMH's/ and our ADR numbers. Very general but if we want to switch parks or catch an EMH, we have the info right in my pocket. :teeth:

Part 5: Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach and some meltdowns, oh oh!

Thursday, 26th October 2006
I'll start this episode by telling you that this is one of the days I have regrets about. All our days at Disney World were great but some were greater than others and even though much was right about this day (the first half was wonderful!), there were down times too. But again, it's all relative. What's that t-shirt? "The worst day at work is better than the best day at school" or something like that - I love that. So you could say the very worst day at WDW is better than the best day in 'real' life! Originally I had scheduled just Animal Kingdom for this, our first park day (see Itinerary, draft 21, section B, sub-section c, part (iv) :lmao: ) but upon learning that Blizzard Beach was due to close on Saturday 28th, I needed to fit it in somewhere.

The UK ultimate tickets include unlimited access to both water parks and Disney Quest so, having been raised with, what I call, the Irish famine mentality (i.e. we went long enough without anything so now we must get the most out of *everything*) it had to be done. Also, the boys adored Typhoon Lagoon last year and specifically asked if we could do both water parks on this trip. I hate water parks because, despite the fact that *everyone* is wearing a bathing suit, I feel like I'm living out that nightmare, the one where you suddenly find yourself walking down a busy city street with no clothes on. I love the sea, that's fine or resort pools, not too traumatic (lol!) - it's the walking around all day in swimwear that kills me. How can I act normal in a bathing suit? If you're in any kinda of a bad mood or worried about anything at all, you just feel stupid in a swimming togs (is 'togs' just an Irish word?). Even carrying your purse to the ice cream stand and digging out credit cards and room keys seems really really stupid when you're just wearing a swimsuit.

So I wasn't looking forward much to Blizzard Beach, I was doing it for the boys. They both love the water and I understood that, for them, swimming outdoors is a great novelty so it was important. I did suggest that I go shopping with Alice or remain in AK with her so they'd have a carefree afternoon but the boys really wanted me there. Bless 'em!

So the plan is to go to AK for opening, have lunch there and then get a direct bus to Blizzard Beach around 1.30 or so. Who am I kidding? No "around" or "or so" about it. It was 1.30 on the dot or someone would pay. :teeth:

The odd thing is I knew how tiring WDW is. We went through it last year. "Hitting the wall", as the Unofficial Guide puts it, is something you don't want to admit might happen, but it happens, dear God it happens, and no matter how energetic, hard-working, fit or optimistic you are, that exhaustion that hits you when you overdo things at WDW is just not nice because you know you *should* be having fun but you just can't because you're too tired. I knew this from last year. So you would think that I would know that by 3pm or so on this day, we would have had enough. I guess I was equating a water park with calmness, relaxation and downtime (despite my whole 'bathing suit' neurosis) and I didn't realise just how exhausted we would feel....... but why don't I just tell you how it went and stop blabbering on...?

The morning was blissful. A tremendous success! I said to everyone the night before that it would be great if we could be up and ready by 7.30 so we could stroll to the bus-stop at our leisure and get to AK before park-opening at 8.45. Of course, in my desire to hide my obsessive side, I added "if we're all up to it" and "if that suits" and "no worries if it doesn't come together, we're on holiday, hee hee [*high pitched*]" but I meant every bit of "7.30" and, so help me God, I knew in my heart I'd be distraught if we slept out (or slept "in" I believe you say on your side of the pond) that day.

Success!!! We achieved something we never achieved the first year. We were up, clean, fed, dressed and ready to go by 7.30!! YES!!!! It was very, very cold so sweaters and socks were needed all round (we later came to regret bringing them as, by 9am it was boiling!). We got to the bus stop at 7.50ish, saw the crowds in line for the MK bus (which was EMH that morning) and saw the empty lines for AK (although the lack of lines was partly due to how ridiculously early we were). A bus pulled up right away with just another handful of people on board from AS Sports. Oh the excitement on that bus! You could just tell that everyone (the few of us that were there) was in the Disney mood! We arrived with plenty of time to spare, took our time getting to the turnstile, got a pic of the kids, still wrapped up warm at that point!

FH020011.jpg

We waited quite a while for opening and went in when it came time. Imagine our joy when we realised we were *first* behind the rope at The Oasis!! Yay!! Just a few minutes later, Minnie, Pluto and Goofy pulled up to entertain us before the 'race to Everest'.

FH020013.jpg

FH020014.jpg

Oh wow! This was our first ever opening show and we loved it. Here's Alice with her Daddy looking on in wonder at her beloved Minnie and friends.

AisDiOpening-1.jpg

Our plan wasn't too anorak-ish. It was roughly: I go to EE, get FPs, the others follow at their own pace, ride EE standby, off to Dinoland to do Dinosaur for the boys and bring Alice to The Boneyard, fit in Kali River Rapids and get to see Festival of the Lion King. But I guess the main pressing reason for us getting up while it was still dark and cold was to beat the crowds to EE.

Imagine my frustration when the CM at rope drop announced that Expedition Everest was "down indefinitely". :scared1: What to do now? I looked around at other faces and most people seemed quite blasé about this. I'm guessing many of them were running to Safari and others knew their stuff well enough to adjust their plan mentally there and then (or maybe they're just not as crazily obsessed as me??). I just drew a blank really.

So, the rope dropped and off we went, forgetting our plan to have me run on ahead. There wasn't any point then. The CM had said that they were issuing FPs for after 10am so I knew I could take my time. I went ahead just a little bit and by now the sun was blazing down - you know that kind of almost white bright sunshine that's hard to take, not the temperature so much as the strength of the rays.

Now I remembered reading somewhere that if EE is "down" then it's usually not for long so it's worth it to just wait. Or else it was that if EE is down it's usually for very long so it's not worth it to wait. I couldn't actually remember which but it was definitely one of those two. So I got there and I got 4 FPs, by now the others had caught up and we took one glance at the crowds around the standby entrance, felt claustrophobic and, so, off we walked to Dinoland.

I was so glad to get out of the crowds, which although light, were, as I say, all compressed in that one spot around the EE entrance, waiting in hope for it to open up. But I had a hunch it was down for a while and, as we can do baby swap, really it wasn't worth waiting and hoping. I'm glad we made the decision to move on as, later, we found out, it was down for a full hour or more that morning.

Dinoland was very quiet. We felt like we had the place to ourselves.

Grumpy took the boys on Primeval Whirl, with a big smile on their faces about to embark on the first ride of the holiday!

FH020023.jpg

They really enjoyed it. Wayne said he didn't want to do Dinosaur (he found it a bit intense last time) so he decided to come with me to take Alice on Triceratop Spin and have a bit of fun with her. Even though this is by no means a scary or rough ride, I was worried that she'd be scared on it but, no, she really enjoyed it. Wayne was a lot of fun, controlling the car and watching her clap her hands in glee. I love that he gets so much pleasure out of watching her enjoy herself, as opposed to complaining about spending time with her. He and Garth are really great brothers.

After that, the three of us headed for The Boneyard where we had arranged to meet Grumpy and Garth when they were done with Dinosaur. If you're familiar with The Boneyard you'll know that there is a rather loud 'roar' every 30 seconds or so coming out through the speakers. Alice went very serious when she heard this and tried to run for cover!

Here she is, before the roar...

Roara.jpg

and here she is during the roar, running for cover. :lmao:

Roar3.jpg

Her face was priceless when she spotted the huge dino 'skeleton'. You could tell she was thinking that it definitely wasn't a living creature and yet, he must be the one causing the ruckus. Then she heard the roar again, but it's not coming from the skeleton and she's getting just a tad irritated. lol!! I can't help wondering how many other young children spend their time in The Boneyard looking for the source of the roar!

She had great fun though! Grumpy and Garth arrived shortly afterwards and Garth wanted to spend a little time in there too so we did. Afterwards we went to sit down for a while. We already seemed to have a ton of superfluous stuff now, like sweaters and hats that had to be squeezed into backpacks. I topped up Alice's suncream and the boys did theirs, bought some extortionately priced water and off we went to Asia, to do Kali River Rapids and use our FPs for EE.

...continued in post 68. :)

I am so enjoying reading your trip report. Your little girl is so precious. I love the picture of her and her daddy watching Mickey at opening. Her eyes say it all. :)

Yay! More TR! I'm so loving your report. And to think, this one will last quite a while since your trip was so long! YAY!

I am enjoying this tremendously - thanks for sharing. I am also extremely impressed that you are finding the time to do all this between the 3 kids and work - I only get online time after everyone else is asleep! And I am usually so tired I can barely string more than a few sentences together.

See - that's my quota. I'm off to bed now!!

PART 6: Day 3 - Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach and some meltdowns, oh oh! (contd...)

(Still) Thursday, 26th October. 2006

On our way to Asia we passed by a character greeting with Pooh Bear and gang. Knowing how much Alice adores those guys, we decided to check out the line. I'm so glad we did. There was just a handful of people in front of us. We were fortunate to be the last to see Pooh before his break.

At this point, I think the strong sun was getting to me. I wish that there were no negative moments during our holiday but there were and the trip report wouldn't be complete or truthful without mentioning them. As this was our first character greeting and, with such beloved heroes of DD's, I was looking forward to getting some good photos. For some reason, I became very irritated when Alice and I posed with Pooh but DH couldn't work the camera. I felt like screaming. Why couldn't he just take the photo? Then it looked like he was taking it but after each 'shot' he'd shake his head to indicate that 'no', nothing was doing with the camera. Like I say, the sun probably didn't help. It was frying my brain.

In reality, it was the disparity between DH's and my attitudes to planning that caused this moodiness in me. I wondered why he couldn't have figured out how to work the camera *before* he needed to take photos. So it just ticked me off. But definitely over-reaction and moodiness was setting in. I see that now.

So after the photo-less Pooh greeting, along Alice goes to Tigger and this time I took the photos (which I have to admit aren't very good, serves me right :lmao: ), then Eeyore and again, we got a pic.

FH020032-1.jpg

FH020031-1.jpg

As luck would have it (and we had a lot of that) Pooh had started to go on break as soon as we were done with him but just as we were leaving, having seen Tigger and Eeyore, Pooh turned around and walked back down and DD ran to him to get a hug and we caught the moment!! Yay!!

FH020036.jpg

So overall, that was a very pleasant experience and Alice loved it. A word of advice - even if you haven't planned on something, but you pass an attraction (be it a character greeting or a ride) that you know someone in your party would love, if the wait-time is reasonable, go for it because it's very hard, even with the best of intentions, to get back to it later!

So we continue our walk to Asia and we're all happy again.

See? They're smiling!!

FH020037.jpg

How could we not be happy really after such a magical encounter with Pooh and gang?!

Kali River Rapids is one of my favourite rides in all of Disney World. I know it's short but, for me, it's got everything a ride should have! We got a baby swap and I rode first with Garth and Wayne. Garth and I didn't get very wet but Wayne was soaked and happily so (it was hot enough for that cold water to feel refreshing). Next, Grumpy went on with the boys and I waited with Alice, in glee, ready to spray them from the bridge overhead! Oh the power!

Here they are just before the elephant spits......

FH030002.jpg

And here's the offending elephant!

FH020040.jpg

So, contented, off we go to use our FPs for Expedition Everest.

FH020022.jpg

Now this is definitely one of those 'what was I thinking?' moments. I cannot fathom, even now, why I ever even considered riding EE. I am a scaredy cat. I had to be strongly persuaded to ride Big Thunder Mountain last year. Turns out I loved it, but that's about my limit really. Oh I did do Rock 'n Roller Coaster too and I was petrified on that.

I had read all about EE and yet, all I focussed on was the fact that it was cool, it was new, it wasn't finished when we were there last year, so therefore it was a *must* do. Sometimes the 'planning' supercedes the actual 'experiencing' and that's not good. I was so focussed on ensuring that we get to do EE, I never thought how it would make me feel.

So, here we are and we get a baby swap and I go first with Garth and Wayne. La, la, la, chatting happily as we sail through the line. We get to the top, we're seated, and then it hit me, all at once. I was sitting in it and I suddenly thought 'what the hell am I doing on this?' Garth was next to me and Wayne was behind. I know that, as parents, we are meant to shield our young from negativity and stress but somehow in Disney World, my vulnerability shows. I looked Garth straight in the eye and said "I'm terrified". He is so nice (and so brave) and caught my hand and said "aww, Mom, you'll be fine, I'm here next to you". :goodvibes

Then I looked back at Wayne and realised that he was scared too, though not as much as me and I said "are you ok?" and he smiled and said a tentative "yes". My heart was racing, I knew there was no backing out now and I just wanted to kick myself for getting into this situation. So off we went. The rest is mostly a blur. I just remember screaming, crying and shouting out prayers I didn't know I knew. Ah yes, I found my faith that day! Bear in mind my tendency to exaggerate and of course, you can be sure I didn't simply think I might get a fright, what I thought was that I was going to die. But I just kept thinking and, possibly, saying aloud "This is Disney, they wouldn't let anything bad happen to us". Don't ask me about any yeti or Asian scenery cause my eyes were closed for almost the entire ride. "This is Disney, they wouldn't let anything bad happ....... HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLP!!! Dear Jesus, save me, don't let me die." Very dignified in front of my 9 year old, yeah? I know we went backwards at some point but I have no idea of the sequence of events.

As time went on, I felt more and more nauseous. Then it ended. I resisted the urge to kiss the ground. I was shaking and I wiped my tears so the boys wouldn't see. But again, there's no point in putting on a front. I told them I was petrified on it. Wayne found it heavy going too but still loved it and Garth thought it wasn't scary at all. :confused3

So we went through the shop and the boys wanted to stop and view the photos but I had to explain my urgency to them, I was about 2 seconds from hurling so we ran outside. The second DH saw me he knew I wasn't feeling good. The heat was scorching outside and I was shaking. I had to stand very still. After a few minutes I felt a little bit better so I told Grumpy to go with the boys but warned him that it was heavy going.

While they were gone, Alice picked this time to have a meltdown. She was now tired, hot and just plain frustrated sitting in her stroller waiting for people. She begged to come out. I lifted her out and the age-old classic occured - the weight on the back of the stroller made it fall. Yeah, three children later and I still let that happen! Each time I bent down to pick something up, everything around me spun and I fought hard not to vomit.

It felt like an age before they returned. It was now lunchtime. Great timing or what? Pffft! Anyway, we slowly made our way to Pizzafari because the itinerary said to do that, lol! I decided the sensible thing was to just get a small glass of water to sip. But instead I opted for the pizza, chocolate cake and coke. lol! Yes, I felt much better. I really did. The pizza was delicious. I loved this place. The staff are so sweet, the decor is lovely and the food is great, despite the limited choices.

The only other thing we wanted to do that morning was Festival of the Lion King.

At this point, despite my earlier moodiness, we were all very happy and thoroughly pleased with how many fun attractions we had been to! But time was moving on and I knew that the next FOTLK show was at 2. We had missed the 1pm show and I thought, let's just do the next one. Oh oh!! It was now 1.30 and Alice was asleep and hadn't had lunch yet. So we decided that the boys and I would go to the show while DH looked after Alice.

There's something about the lower left side of Animal Kingdom that confuses me no-end. I looked at the map, saw where Camp Minnie Mickey was, headed there, or so I thought, and next realised we were nearing the exit. So off we go, running at this stage, back up again, I ask for directions, thinking 'it's all clear now' and yet again, we end up somewhere else. *Confused* Eventually, we find it. It's 1.59 but we get in. We're at the back but I don't care. We made it! Hooray!! And I'm so glad we did. What an amazing show. I was so sorry though that Alice and Grumpy weren't here with us to enjoy it too but knowing that we had another AK day, I felt better.

FH030012.jpg

After that we went back to Pizzafari where we met a much happier Alice who had awoken shortly after we left, had some juice and pizza and even a nappy change. It's 2.40ish. We're all having a fabulous day and we know it, we feel it. But Blizzard Beach closes at 5 so I said we need to get moving. Oh to have a time machine. I would go back, scrap all notions of doing Blizzard Beach, take our time, admit that we're exhausted and go back to our hotel for a nap and a swim. But the itinerary was all-knowing and all-powerful. That was guiding me and I shouldn't have let it! Still, we all wanted to get there and none of us really had the sense to say 'no'.

So this is where the stress kicks in. We hurry out. It's a long hot walk when you're tired. We ask a CM which bus to take. She tells us get on the Wilderness Lodge bus which we do and the driver kindly stops off at BB. By now it's around 3.10. We have less than 2 hours before park closing and still we press on for what turns out to be a very stressful afternoon.....

TO BE CONTINUED! - It's on Page 6, Post no. 78!

EllesterI hope your little guy is still on the mend and doing great!

NMAmy Thanks. Happy to be used to prove your relative sanity. :teeth:

Alfredo, Tina & dopeyfanatic I really appreciate the feedback. :thumbsup2

riopoohI think I'm in still in 'holiday' mode right now and still focussed on WDW. :cloud9: But you're right, it's hard to find any time with 3 kids, a job and a ton of stuff going on! Still, writing this TR is like a much-needed rest from the other stuff going on so I'm enjoying it. Sorry your 'quota' was up so soon. :lmao:

I loved your desciption of riding Everest........you had me laughing so hard :lmao: that I was wiping away tears. Read it outloud to my hubby.

Loving your trippie........and I too am reading it hearing your Irish accent.

One of my favorite authors is Irish.......Marian Keyes. You are kinda funny just like her. I love how ya'll call your Momma Mammy. :rotfl2:

Hi DebIreland - I am really enjoying your Trip report. You sound like you have fun!! Like you I will be travelling a lo-o-o-ong way to get to WDW, so will be spending 2 weeks there - got to make the most of the cost of airfares and the travel time!!
Thanks for writing your report, and I look forward to reading the rest.

Heather

PS Here in Queensland we call them "togs" too!! Go to Sydney and they look at you as if you are speaking a foreign language when you call your "bathers" togs!!! :confused3

Another great installment! I am really starting to believe I live in the UK between your and Kevin Stringer's reports! My maiden name is "English" after all! But, then again, if I were on the "other side of the pond" I wouldn't be able to pig out on turkey and goodies tomorrow (American Thanksgiving)!

Thanks for asking about my little guy, he's doing great. It seems it was just a one night thing, thank goodness. He's happily watching "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" with his sisters right now. I love Goofy's dance during "Hot Dog" at the end! Doesn't take much to make me happy. I still think we should hook up our little ones. Mine also has huge blue eyes. I never seem to have luck posting pictures, but here's a try.

kids.jpg

Can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!

Ellester Wow! Your children are beautiful! :goodvibes About hooking up our youngest two, DD wants to know how many years are left on your DVC membership and if it's going to be passed down to your DS and, if so, would he take his mother-in-law along too? She's so vocal!! :rolleyes1 Also what kind of car does he drive and does he have a pension plan? :teeth: ;)

Heather Thanks! :) Wow! You'll certainly be travelling a long, long way. I'm trying to imagine the jetlag. You'll need plenty of rest time when you return! I'm so glad we're not the only ones who call them 'togs'. lol

Disneygrl36 Marian Keyes is one of my favourite authors too!! She is so funny! There was quite a gap there when she didn't release a new book but I believe there was one out a few months ago which I must get my hands on. 'Rachel's Holiday' was the best!

MagicForMe Thanks! :)

Very nice trip report. I am enjoying your Irish perspective and the interesting observations such as waffles are a novelty, you don't often have pancakes, and you didn't know what A/C stood for. I really enjoyed your account of Expedition Everest, although I felt sorry for your distress. Your "I resisted the urge to kiss the ground" comment is one we can probably all identify with on one ride or another. I think it was Tower of Terror for me, and that was years ago when they used to only drop you only once rather than multiple times!

I think we are long lost cousins!!! ( I have Irish roots) I am so excited reading your report, it all makes sense. :thumbsup2

I am copying your chart (less complicated than the one I have been working on.) My husband's nickname is Grumpy. I always stay up before a trip getting ready ( and then hit the holiday quesy with that I can't believe I stayed up all night headache - though the tips here have helped me get a few winks before dawn.)

Keep quoting you to my grumpy ( ex " savings is paying off and charging up"). Following you through AK brought back memories as we raced from Breakfastsaurus to the Safari before the opening parade made it there, then Grumpy who does no planning had the nerve to stop and use the bathroom. I went on without him, the throngs swallowed us up, my dds were on the verge of tears....I FP the safari, finally found him and walked around with the MOOD until we got on the safari :furious: . Reading your report I see we need to be more flexible though I also subscribe to the famine philosophy. Keep up the great work, you are my heroine!!! :wave2:

Ok, I realize it's only been 4 days since your last post..... BUT :rolleyes1

I am waiting patiently.... I think... :bitelip:

PART 7: Day 3 - Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach and some meltdowns, oh oh! (contd...)

(Still) Thursday, 26th October, 2006

So we've arrived at Blizzard Beach with less than 2 hours before closing time. It's hot. We're tired. Most irritating of all, we have way too much baggage. We decide to get a locker so after getting a key, Grumpy takes the boys to the men's changing room and I take Alice to our one. Afterwards, Grumpy grabs a couple of back packs to put in the locker but I stop him and point out that each bag has stuff we do need and stuff we don't need so we stand in the middle of that area and empty, re-distribute and re-arrange everything. I can't help but notice that the hundreds of people around us are carefree, smiling and not laden down with stuff so I have no doubt, we are once again, er, unique in our approach to things.

DH and the boys carry the pile of annoying crap to the locker. They're gone a long time so I take Alice to see them. Basically the lockers are way too small (not sure why we thought they'd be bigger but we did). DH squeezes in as much as he can and we put the rest on the already over-burdened stroller. It is beyond hot with, again, those searing sun rays (in retrospect this has got to be the hottest day we had and it wasn't far off the summer days of June/July 05).

So we decide that DH will bring the boys to do various wet and scary things while I take Alice to the toddler area. So off we go.

Before we reach the toddler place I double back to buy a drink at one of those carts. I see the refillable mugs for sale and wish I'd brought back our Typhoon Lagoon mug from last year and then just pay the 6 dollars it costs for a new barcode. In any case, knowing that we'd be going to Typhoon Lagoon again next week, I decide to go ahead and buy another one but they don't refill drinks at this cart, they just sell the mugs. So now we need to go to the nearest food place to refill them. Why is everything so complicated today? :confused3

I'm going to digress here to say there's a weird kinda phenomenon with me and Disney water parks. I can hardly remember the names of any ride, shop, restaurant or any specific area of either BB or Typhoon Lagoon. Words like 'leaping' and 'libations' and 'summit' and 'gusher' and 'little tikes' are coming in and out of my head but very vaguely. Also, it's not just the names that confuse me, the general layout of both parks just did my head in. It should be easy to find anywhere. There's a lazy river running around the outside so wouldn't it be hard to go wrong? No, it's very easy. I don't think I went the right way to get to anything ever!

So having filled the mug, drank it back, gave Alice some (having added some hot H2O), we load up the crap again and find our way to the kiddies area and eventually get there. Hurrah!! So we get a couple of sun loungers and drop our stuff (why are the chairs and sun loungers all crammed in tight together with no room to spread them out?).

At first Alice is quite hesitant. That's actually a good thing for me as a parent because I know she's not going to just run or leap into the water without thinking. She stands back, assesses her surroundings, watches other kids her age and gauges how they're doing to figure out if it seems like fun! She smiles all the time while she's doing this analysis! It's the cutest thing to watch her zoning in and scanning her environment. After a little while I ask her to come in the water with me and she said "no thanks Mom" with the little hand up to 'halt' me! No problem. After another few minutes she said "Mo--o--om?", "Yes Alice", "can we go in the water now?", "sure hon". So she takes my hand and slowly steps in the few inches of water, giggling all the while. She's really a joy to watch as she's very demonstrative with lots of hand gestures and body movements. When she giggles her whole face lights up and she doubles over, slaps her knees with her hands and really makes a drama out of it!

She slowly builds up the courage to explore at a faster pace until eventually she's having a ball, running around and getting wet head to toe.

AisBB2.jpg

AisBB.jpg

It's very sweet seeing all the little babies and toddlers having such fun in this area. It's such a clean, safe place although, honestly, she was just as happy in the ASMusic pool. The boys and DH return temporarily to see how we're doing and to make an arrangement for later. There's just about 40 minutes left before closing time now so off they go to do something else.

At 4.30 the announcements start that the park will be closing soon. By 4.45 I'm getting anxious as I'm painfully aware of all the stuff that needs to be put back into bags and all the items needed for us all to get dressed. Do I go and dress myself and Alice now and then return to the boys or do I wait for the boys to return first? Hmmmm. I wait. Until around 4.55, at which point I'm getting more anxious - people are leaving in droves and the announcements are coming fast that the park is closing.

So I decide to at least walk to the entrance to this area so we're not far from the lockers then. Except when it came time to leave, Alice had a meltdown. She's a sweet girl but she's also 2! No amount of cajoling, bribing or contriving would get her out of this place. So eventually I unload the stroller and put a loudly-protesting, red-faced, squirmy little madam into it and move on. Even waiting at the entrance of that area wasn't working because she knew the "splish splash" was "just there" and was yearning to get back to it. So I decided to go a bit further, get another drink and then come back. Can you guess what happened here? Yeah we missed DH and the boys. The thing is there was a long line at the nearest refill place but I stuck it out anyway. If I had been anyway focussed, I'd have realised that I was gonna miss them. But the hot searing sun, exhaustion and anxiety etc etc..........

The way the refill place is situated, you refill the drinks in front of you and you wash the mugs out in a sink a couple of feet to the right. Now there was a guy in front of me with a large family. He was using the one mug to refill (no exaggeration here) about 10 paper cups and another 4 or 5 various style plastic cups. :lmao: Not just that but he'd shout over his shoulder "hey what do you want Jo, coke, sprite, water?, "how about you Bessie, coke, sprite, lemonade?" to each kid. This went on and on and on. I've already said in an earlier chapter that I don't care about people re-using refillable mugs and I don't but honestly this was hilarious and did, somewhat, take the biscuit.

Time was dragging on. I was still waiting for my turn. I decided to wash the mug and at least get that part out of the way to save time. I manouvred Alice in her stroller to the right, washed out my mug while he was still pouring, refilling, pouring, refilling, pouring, refilling etc. He then went away and I went to get my refill and heard a loud snarky voice behind me say "oh there must have been a second line we didn't see". His tone was unmistakably sarcastic. His friend roared laughing and said "I guess waiting in line isn't for everyone". Then it dawned on me that they were looking at and talking about me and obviously thought I had just jumped in front of the line from the right. THIS, after me queueing for 20 something minutes???!! AAAArrrrgh! Actually, I wasn't angry. I was hurt. By his sarcasm and smart-alec comments. So I said to him "excuse me, are you referring to me?" and he said "well I guess if the accusation fits" (or something very like that) so I said "well I'd like you to know that my daughter and I have been in line for 20 minutes" and he said "yeah, SURE you have" and just rolled his eyes. You know what really disappointed me? He mightn't have noticed me in line in front of him but I know for a fact that a woman behind him did because we chatted briefly and laughed about something and when I made eye contact with her she just shrugged. If that were me, I would definitely have defended the accused!

But really, such a small encounter wouldn't ordinarily have bothered me if it weren't for my mood, the hot searing sun...... well you know the rest! It was the last straw. So off I left to go back to the kiddie area and wait for DH and the boys. We found a place to stand and, still angry at having been taken out of the water, when I gave Alice a sip of drink she caught it and flung it on the ground, spilling its contents and smashing the lid. This made me cry. I know, slight over-reaction! But again, the last straw! We waited and waited, the crowd is disappearing, no sign of DH and the boys.

Eventually we spot them. They had been back of course and missed us. So we scatter our belongings, re-distribute, re-arrange and re-organise yet again. We go to get dressed and we meet back outside. We are now amongst the last 10 people in the park. The CMs are being incredibly patient and I keep giving them apologetic looks and they just smile back, bless 'em. Then I notice DH has no footwear on. He has lost his sandals. Oh for the love of God. He runs around looking everywhere and eventually he sees them in the empty locker. So at 5.20 we're out of here.

Lesson: don't try a water park with a family of 5 when it's blistering hot and you're exhausted. But if you must do it, don't bring 50 kilos of luggage with you. Be organised and keep everything to a minimum. If anyone hassles you, ignore it and laugh. If your toddler accidentally spills a drink (even if it did require a half hour of your time and a run-in with a moron) don't get upset, laugh it off. And take lots of deep breaths.

The good thing is we at least got to see Blizzard Beach. I asked the boys was it worth it and they said no, it was too rushed and too manic. Story of our lives.

So we, fortunately, make the last bus back to ASMusic. Here's a photo of a bus. lol!! I just think, it might be the angle, I'm not sure, but whatever it is, Garth did a fine job of taking this photo.....

To digress again, do the bus drivers get enough recognition? To me, they are a huge part of the Disney magic. Through 16 days and many trips to and from Disney parks, we never once had a grumpy driver. They just couldn't be nicer! Major kudos to them!!

By the time we get there we're all fine again. The stress has disappeared. Here's DH and the kids tired but contented

So we make the trek to our room which, by now, we're actually enjoying! It's a nice walk and, again, may I add that this resort is beautiful, not just adequate but, in my opinion, beautiful. There's a DIS poster who has some great threads about the All Star resorts. Her name is Linda (minnie61650) and I owe her a debt of gratitude. First, for her very accurate portrayal of ASMusic resort and, second, for pointing out in one of her posts some time ago that there's some really lovely landscaping and details at ASMusic, if you take the time to notice it. And we did. The fountains, the sidewalks, the foliage and the sheer cleanliness here is just wonderful. We will definitely come to stay here again.

Here are some photos we took on our walk back.....

We even had a bunny waiting for us outside our building, much to Alice's delight! :)

So we get back to the room and get organised (insofar as we are ever organised) and decide to explore our neighbouring All Star Movies resort. We were originally booked to stay there for the first 4 nights but, upon hearing of the pool closure, I switched to ASMusic as I knew that swimming was important to the boys. But, as we needed to move again the following weekend (3rd & 4th Nov), I chose ASMovies for just those 2 nights, knowing that we'd be out all day both days and wouldn't need a pool.

So we walk out the front of ASMusic and, before we know it, we're in the dalmations section of ASMovies. That was fast! I loved the look of this section. The warm orange glow of the buildings in the dark and, of course, the huge dalmation icons.

Our two boys having fun - I swear Wayne is not as aggressive as he looks in this pic.

We find the food court and are somewhat taken aback by the crowds (we later find out that it's always packed like this, but ASMusic food court never is and is much better!). We order some vegetarian pasta which was plain but adequate and, once more, refill our mugs. I love that you can use those things at all 3 AS food courts. It's another cold evening so the boys put on their sweaters for the walk back to our room. I'm not good at gauging distances but I do know that the walk from ASMusic entrance to Dalmations building is about half the distance of the walk from ASMusic entrance to our room in Country Fare.

It's been a long day. Terrific morning at AK (and oh how I wish we'd left it at that) and a horrid afternoon at BB (let's not beat around the bush here, it really was horrid). One advantage of water parks is that the kids are worn out after them so we had an early night and we're all asleep by 10 - me yet again clutching my Unofficial Guide and TGM notes - looking forward to our early start and our breakfast at Crystal Palace in MK! Yay!!

Up next: "Part 8: Magic Kingdom at last(!!), to do or not to do Fantasmic and bonding time at the resort" - It's on Page 7, Post no. 101.

Kay7979 - Thanks so much for reading and for your comments Kay! Much appreciated! :)

Jake & Crew - Such kind words. :cloud9: Ah, yes, how I can relate to that stressful start to your park day. Wait til you read about our MK start on our next day - the words 'control' and 'freak' come to mind, much to my shame! :bitelip:
Reading your report I see we need to be more flexible
ABSOLUTELY! I've already decided that if we get back to WDW, even though I'll still plan, I would most definitely chill out and go slower!!! We've done the 'plan it down to the last minute' approach now. I think once is enough for that!!
you are my heroine!!!
You are way too kind but I love it! :lmao:

Disneyland_Mama - Thanks for the gentle push! :)
