Ok, so I'm watching a Duggar special, trying to keep an open mind -- really -- and they are at a baby store buying for # 18 when one of the little boys (about 3 or 4) starts some toy that plays music and he starts dancing. It was really cute to me, but apparently a big deal for the Duggars. He was told by an older brother he was not supposed to dance. Then an older sister (who I have respect for) defended him and said " he was just jumping for joy." Then Jim Bob made a comment about how they have to be careful what music the kids listen to because their bodies will move.

WTH???!!!!?? Even the little ones natural dance instincts have to be suppressed when a toddler toy plays the itsey bitsey spider or something of that (evil) :hippie: nature.

And you know what? You almost never see Michell holding a child. You see Jim Bob, the other kids and even the new DIL holding children but rarely (if ever) Michelle.

I'm not sure if they are allowed. I have watched a few episodes of that show, and while they are well behaved children, it almost seems like everytime they answer a question, it is something they have been told to "feed to the camera" In MY opinion.

Dancing to the itsy-bitsy spider: evil

Exploiting your family on television for financial gain: not so much
:confused3

Apparently not, I caught that too and thought it was odd. Jim Bob said something to the effect that they watch what music they listen to because it can make you do things you shouldn't, not the exact words, but that general idea. I think it is a cop out, you are responsible for your own actions and "blaming" music for making you behave badly is nonsense.

Before they were home churchers they were Southern Baptists...remember Foot Loose.....they don't believe in dancing and they do not belive in rock music because it causes young people to 'forget' themselves and dance too close or touch......though the cousin was laughing on that trip to Branson, because she had to search out her ipod.....she said that the rest of the family only listened to/sang gospel and that the ipod was her salvation on the long car ride.

Where I live there are a lot of families that don't listen to modern music and don't believe in dancing,,,,although none of them have 20kids....we do have a couple of families with more kids (like 4-8) that use the library but I don't know thier opinions of dancing.

He was pretty cute though...no natural rhythem but cute none the less.

Wow those two (Jim Bob and Michelle) really are something else aren't they? I wonder how those children are going to adjust to the "real world" when they have to go to college, or get real jobs, etc. I highly doubt that they can all end up marrying people who want to do nothing but reproduce.

Hmmm . . . difficult to defend that stance from a Biblical point of view considering that several Old Testament characters are described as DANCING to praise the Lord. Specifically, King David -- who is known as a man after God's own heart -- is described as singing and dancing joyfully on numerous occasions.

Of course, you can also find examples of dancing leading to trouble in the Bible. For example, when Moses came down from the Mt. with the Ten Commandments, he found his people dancing around the golden calf idol -- and for that they were punished by wandering in the wilderness for 40 years.

From a reasonable standpoint, certainly much of the dancing that's done today -- specifically, I'm thinking of the teenagers who are into the "grinding" dancing -- is highly inappropriate. Parents may find it easier to just FORBID ALL DANCING rather than monitor good vs. bad dancing; however, that doesn't help the kids much in the long run. In fact, it can lead to serious confusion when they realize that the Bible doesn't forbid dancing. Kids who realize the difference between what their parents say and what the Bible says may then start to question other things, and that can certainly lead to things the parents didn't want to bring up at all.

Drinking is a similar topic. Nowhere does the Bible forbid drinking; in fact, Jesus' first miracle was to PROVIDE WINE for a wedding. Now, the Bible DOES forbid drunkenness, but many people find it more convenient just to say, "It's wrong to drink" rather than to look at what's really in the text.

The girls won't go to college or have real jobs. They are being trained to be wives and mothers.

Hmmmmm--I'm a Baptist pastor's wife. Guess I shouldn't be listening to oldies/classic rock and dancing while I'm cleaning the house, huh?;)

Tough turkey. . .

I used to be Southern Baptist. While dancing is now allowed depending on the church, most will encourage you to pay attention to the music you listen to so that you are not listening to something with inappropriate lyrics. Some are still really old fashioned. At my church, the youth minister and pastor's wife got in trouble with some little old ladies for dancing to some gospel music, because "Baptists Don't Dance." I never did understand the reasoning, but it is a fundamental Christian thing.

I would say that most Southern Baptists dance. Our church is Southern Baptist and at church we sing....GASP.....Christian Rock songs. :goodvibes

bookgirl-Hopefully you're being sarcastic about the Southern Baptists. That is not the stance of the Southern Baptist Association and hasn't been in my lifetime. There are plenty of religious groups who believe that way, but the massive SBA isn't one of them. Or if they are, I guess my card is being revoked (now I'm the one being sarcastic) since I took all those years of dance lessons and still have a hard time sitting still when music plays.

chobie-I think you've hit the point of Duggar overload, my friend. Time to walk away and never look back. But we all know that we all end up coming back because it's like a train wreck on Tivo.

I can understand to a point wanting to make sure the music was appropriate for children...but what would be wrong with dancing joyfully to bible songs?

Seems like a miserable, depressing way to go through life to me.

To each their own I guess.

After 151 Years, Dance Ban Ends at Baylor
Published: April 19, 1996
For the first time in the 151-year history of Baylor University, dancing has been allowed on campus at the Southern Baptist school.

Baylor's president, Robert Sloan Jr., decided in February to lift the ban on dancing, which is still considered morally harmful by some strict Baptists.
