The Dixie Chicks Denounce President Bush

I'm not questioning anyone's RIGHT to free speech, or to opposing the war.

But I do question the effectiveness of it. What are the consequences, intended and unintended?

Do you think anti-war protests, speeches, etc. have made Saddam Hussein more or less likely to disarm?

More or less likely to go into exile?

More or less likely to fight to the death, and increase the number of civilian and military casualties on both sides?

At this point in the process, do you think anti-war protests are likely to result in the U.S. NOT attacking Iraq? If you do, look beyond that result, and tell me what you see happening to the Iraqi people, to Saddam's willingness to disarm?

EVERYONE says Saddam is a brutal, ruthless dictator, and that he needs to go.

But only one side seems to be putting forth a credible way to do that (with force).

It really didn't sound like a question from the media at all! In fact, it sounds like the comments were made to an audience in a concert setting.

Maines told the audience earlier this week, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

Chicks Bash Bush!

I stand corrected.

All she said was they were ashamed he was from Texas. Maybe she meant that she wished he would not wait for the backing of other countries before going in and doing what he said he would do, with or with out the UN. Or maybe she is ashamed of him because he doesn't wear a cowboy hat and boots. What else did she say, and if it was only this statement, why are so many people assuming its becuse she is anti Bush or anti war or what ever. Why not ask her what she meant?

Why do we treat movie/tv/recording stars like they ar emore important thatn the people we voted into office that are responsible for what is happening in the world?

I wanted to read some of what others posted on the Dixie Chicks website. But, the boards are still down.

I think I'm more upset by the fact that radio stations would "ban" their music. That to me is the epitome of being UN-American. All that says is "It's my way or no way and you are not entitled to an opinion unless it's mine!" Doesn't sound like something Thomas Jefferson would write.

To me, all it says is that the radio stations are making a business decision. If listeners are calling and saying that they won't listen to the station if it plays Dixie Chicks, then that could affect advertising rates. The radio stations are in the business to make money. There is nothing un-American about capitalism.

AirForceRocks,
You're right on the money, literally of course, regarding the decision being a commercial one and yes, capitalism is definitely not un-American. I, personally, am against the "banning" (or even "burning") of records/CDs or books...in cases like this. I don't know, it seems way too Fahrenheit 451 to me, a bit of an overreaction and contradicts the freedoms I believe this country was founded on.

I disagree - I think that allowing these things to happen reinforces the freedoms rather than diminishing them.

How far do you think that $600 went for all the families out of work right now?

Actually, most of our payraises under President Clinton were well above the annual increases in cost of living, something that we didn't get under either Presidents Reagan or Bush. My first payraise under President Reagan was 2.2% - whoop-di-doo. Add to that the fact that my variable housing allowance was cut in half, and I ended up making $50/month less than I had before my "generous" pay increase.

Sorry AFR that's simply not true. During the Clinton years pay raises were pretty much at the rate of inflation with the exception of 99/00 when he was trying to help Gore get elected.
FY Raise %
93 3.7
94 2.2
95 2.6
96 2.4
97 3.0
98 2.8
99 3.6
00 6.2

Also, it's not Reagan's fault that you only got a 2.2% payraise cause you joined too late ;) - your pay actually already benefited from the 11.7 and 14.3 payraises he gave the Military in 81/82. Just imagine what your pay would have been without those two very significant pay raises. Go to DFAS and look at the pay charts for the years before you joined. Just for example - an E-4 over 4 in Oct 1980 made $727.20 per month by Oct 1985 that same E-4 over 4 was making $952.29. An 31% increase in 5 years. In Jan 88 that E-4 over 4 was making $1000.20 at total increase of 37.5% in 8 years.

Fast Forward to the Clinton Years. An E-4 over 4 makes 1213.20 in Jan 93, in Jan 01 he makes $1520.20 an increase of 25% in 8 years.

I used to like the dixie chicks, and I am a veteran, so I fought for the right for them to say that, but at this time I think it is inappropriate. If that is the way she feels then maybe they should not be allowed back in this country. I live in Texas and I am proud of what our President has done and is doing. I will support him as he is our Leader and the Commander in Chief.

ToriLammy,

You can be on my debate team anytime. You go! :D ;) :p

These so-called celebs have no influence on me, whatsoever.

However, it seems that companies and Hollywood execs are cutting back on the hollywood halfwits singing out of tune;

Sean Penn was pulled as the lead in two upcoming movies because of his subjective and obusive comments towards the USA.

Martin Sheen's Visa Card commercial (of which I liked) was also pulled because of his subjective comments against the USA.

Many companies are pulling their sponsor time from media related shows that promote anti-war or anti-USA or anti-BUSH.

As for Bill Clinton, I find him to big the biggest embarrassment of the 20th century. I'm sure Bill used his tax rebate from the Bush administration on dry cleaning bills. Hey Hill, is that your blue dress? I don't think so....

Well said ToriLammy and LauraJean1014. I applaud you both!!:bounce:

I had heard the information about Martin Sheen's commercial being pulled just yesterday. I've also heard in the past week that the West Wing is dropping drastically in the ratings this season.

So I can't help but believe that this comment will hurt the Dixie Chicks in the long run. They may rebound, but right now people are upset.

George Bush scares me more than Saddam does. Good for them!

United States also needs a regime change!

mickeyfan1,

Here's the whole article as found at www.foxnews.com:

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — The Dixie Chicks are drawing harsh words from country music fans for remarks singer Natalie Maines made about President George W. Bush during a recent performance in London.

Maines told the audience earlier this week, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

Angry phone calls flooded Nashville radio station WKDF-FM on Thursday, some calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.

The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

The Dixie Chicks will kick off a U.S. tour in support of their multi-platinum album Home on May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The group's hits include "Wide Open Spaces," "Ready to Run" and "Landslide."

I report - you decide! ;)

It's better than nothing, and they should be thankful for it!
