Bet,
The Rehnquist thing was reported in all the major newspapers and there were major wire service stories (although, in fairness, the stories I picked up from the major newspapers [web and hard copy] were for the most part buried and short). The Ramboesque foreign policy angle was in the major news magazines that immediately preceded 9/11--they may actually have been dated a few days after 9/11 but were written and published prior to 9/11. These articles were particularly striking to me since I was reading them in-flight the week after 9/11 and was, frankly, very very shaken by their contents. In fairness, there has been some amount of at least public persona to the Bush administration's foreign policy if only because Colin Powell has been carrying more of the burden and responsibility unlike pre-9/11. The issue of the Bush administration's energy policy and it's sole responsibility for 35 cents of the gas price increase we have seen (through their direct purchases of millions of barrels of oil from particular small domestic suppliers) has been on the wires, the new magazines, the newspapers, business magazines, and contemporary economics journals.
In an effort to stay informed, I typically read the news sections of at least 4 and usually 6 newspapers from across the country each day (something I have now done for over twenty years); familiarize myself with the contents of the major news magazines each week; typically consult with international relations, legislative, judicial, and presidential experts on at least a bi-weekly basis; and get briefed by corporate government relations people on at least a weekly basis. I might add that most of my "behind the scenes" intelligence comes from the Republican sources, though much of the expert information is provided by a mix of viewpoints that includes many Democrats. This does not make my opinion better than anyone else's, but in some cases it may make the information upon which I form my opinion broader and deeper than that available to many other people.
I pray for President Bush and for our country every night. Whether I like the man or not, much of my life is dependent upon his good judgement and honesty. On those grounds, I hope he succeeds in spite of himself.
