The Disney Tipping Info Thread *Updated 9.1.09*

I have a question about tipping? I have heard that the servers don't get paid hardly anything but base pay of <$3/hr, and really only make money on tips? If that is true, shouldn't we all be tipping 18 -20% if they are doing a good job? They do their part to make our trip magical.
Also, what do you tip a concierge when they print out your dining and get info from them?

As far as I know, waiters make < $3/hr all over the U.S, making most of their money on tips.

The percentage you choose to tip is personal, some people do more, some people do less. If you feel 18 - 20% is a good amount, that is what you should tip.

I don't tip the concierge in Disney for printing out my ADR's, but that's just me.

I apologize if this has been previously answered...I slogged through pages 1-16, then skipped ahead to the last few pages. When paying for some items OOP (example, appatizers at Coral Reef) and remainder of meal with DDP, is it necessary to tip twice or can you tip once?? If I'm using a CC for tips, will I pay (example 18%) $18.00 on a $100 OOP bill and $36 on the $200 DDP bill. Or will it (or can it) be one $56 charge? Or can you ask that it be processed as one charge. I like to keep track of meal costs by reciepts and it would be much easier at checkout to verify all charges if it is one tip charge instead of two.:thumbsup2

And can you tip in cash and cc?? Dh has decided to tip the suggested 18%......if I want to leave an additional amount (while he is in the restroom) is this possible? Not debating should I or shouldn't, :goodvibes I but CAN I?

And there was a little bedate earlier in the thread I'd like to ask again sinc einformation changes. Is the gratuity now included for PSB at Akershus in EPCOT. Or is it just meal and taxes and tip is OOP?

TIA!!!

i will be using the free dining option, and i would like to tip extra at some places, and far less if i feel the service/food was bad. So can I write cash in the tip space and leave the desired amount on the table? or do we hand it directly to the server? also, how about if you don't want to leave a tip...is this even "allowed"?
You can write cash, or you can simply write the exact dollars-and-cents amount of the tip on the designated line and pay for it via whatever method (room charge, gift card, etc.) you choose.

The orecalculated-for-you 18% and 20% are suggested - not required - amounts, as long as you don't fall into one of the auto-grat categories (see posts 1276 and 1280).

Generally, the only valid reason for not leaving a tip is horrible service. Rather than tolerate this, and "retaliate" by not tipping, the BEST route is to locate a manager while the problem is occuring and allow the restaurant an opportunity to correct the issue.

I want to be sure that you realize that the dining plan no longer includes the tip. If service is bad you can chose not to leave on, but you should also take it up with the manager.

You can always leave extra cash if you want. Akershus does NOT include tip in the price. A picture is now included in the price though.

I have it in my mind that CRT and Spirit of Aloha the tip is included, does anyone know if I am correct? I do not know about Hoop de doo or Mickey's BBQ as I have never been to either.

Any other restaurants that might have the tip included? I figure if I am to be wrong I would rather be wrong and leave a tip than to not leave one when it was not included.

I took a quick look at the DP document on the Disney World site. Here are the ones that have the tip included (they're all TWO table service credit meals):

~ Hoop de Doo
~ Mickey's Backyard BBQ
~ Spirit of Aloha
~ CRT (all meals)

Here's the link to the DDP brochure from Disney (just look for the "G" symbol in the restaurant listings):

Nope - Here in California (and I believe Nevada) servers make minimum wage or above. We don't have a sub minimum wage[/QUOTE

almost all of the rest of the united states pay much less than minimum wage to servers, including florida. they make most of their pay in tips (and they dotip out. anyplaces that pay higher wages have increased charges for their entrees.

.

a lot of people that haven't visited in a while don't know this.this is why the server may mention it.

Hi lisa!!!!!:grouphug:

Ok, I just called CM in dining dept just a couple minutes ago and she said that " Gratuities are NOT included " for CRT even on the dining plan.

I told her have a 2009 Dining Plan guide and it says....It is Included ! So, she says, well...hang on to the flyer real good because Gratuities are never included in any Dining plan now. Why is this such a mixed up and mis-understanding issue ?? I'm talking about just the CRT only.........

Thanks for your input here!

Gratuities are included at CRT.

Unfortunately CM's are a notoriously bad source of information for anything Disney.

Seriously they can be. I made a reservation for Crystal Palace a while back. The CM insisted that the gratuity was included there. I told them that it wasn't and listed for them where gratuities were included. She fought with me! (When I went to my lunch at Crystal Palace I confirmed what I already knew, that gratuities aren't included there)

We are a family of 6 and I was trying to figure out aprox. how much we will be paying in tips, do they add 18% at buffets also?
Thanks
Christine

CRT does have the tip included in the price. It doesn't matter what "Plan" you are on the price is made to have the tip right in it. Each entree is ther same price for adults, no matter what you get and same for children. The only thing you have to pay for there is if you get a specialty drink or some kind of extra birthday cake.

CMs sometimes are just wrong as we all know. This one seems to have fixated on the factoid that "tips are no longer covered on the dining plan", and wrongly applied it to this question.

Is the 18% tip added at buffets?

Yes, it will be added at all TS restaurants.

I read somewhere on these boards that when you order from the Pepper Market, they add an 18% gratuity to your bill. Can someone tell me why? This is a food court I thought. Why would there be tipping in a food court when you obviously place the order and wait for the food yourself? I also read a post where someone said to avoid this you order everything from there as take out. I'm just confused!

It is a 10% gratuity, not 18. Pepper Market has "servers" who bring your silverware and refill your drinks. If you carry the food out, the "servers" do not enter into the equation at all. The restaurant is not owned or run by Disney, which may explain why they choose to do things differently.

So it's not a food court?

1) Not in the sense of they typical WDW food court.
2) It is a series of different sections or stations.
3) You get a "ticket".
4) As you walk around and get food, your ticket is stamped.
5) As mentioned, a 10% gratuity is automatic.

I know this has been asked before, but the search function isn't turning up anything...

Can I use reward dollars for tipping? I am paying for my trip with reward dollars, but will have built up a good amount more in the 45 days after final payment is due. As we don't expect to be taking another trip to WDW in the near future, I would like to be able to use the reward dollars on this trip. I know I can use them for merchandise, but after 17 trips to WDW I really don't buy much of anything anymore.
